Its a common problem with vehicles that do'nt get used very often. the batteries slowly die. Your friends house looks nice and your extensions to yours will look great too, I bet you can't wait to get started on it before the snow comes. Give Levi a pat from me.

The general unspoken rule is, Whenever you borrow something from a friend,or anyone for that matter, you want to return it in better condition than you borrowed it. For example if you borrow a trailer you clean it after you are done. Or if you borrow a huge crane to frame a house, you replace the two batteries that are dead. Two batteries=$200. Renting a crane for a month= minimum $3000.00. Even if I go wakeboarding for a day with by buddies. We always pay for all the gas and we clean the boat for him. Because he pays to maintain, insure, cost of purchase, and storing it.

I worked on an island about 30 years ago and we had a slighty older version of Pettibone . We had an inexperienced driver trying to unload a barge with it when he got distracted and it rolled into the sea....no more Crane. It's probably still laying on the bottom.

Stumbled upon an early castle video many years ago. Immediately subscribed and always amazed at the talent, skills, and the hard work Andrew does. In this case I like the in progress videos instead all at once when the job is finished.
Always keep your hook up. I was short distance transferring a Grove and a young girl got pissed by my speed, sped under the hook to turn off the road and took out her windshield. She wanted the police to cite me but they ticketed her for reckless driving. You really have to do their thinking for them.

I once asked on a logging channel why the skidders kept the jaws closed when travelling empty. The answer came back that if the jaws are open and swinging about, they can spear into and destroy a front tire. I'm guessing that would be serious money.
@@TrevorDennis100 Rear tires. Either poke a tire or hook in the tire chains. Also less swing when it's closed, so it's not banging around. Depending on size, tires are in the 5k area.
Goodness! That's more than I expected. All part of the joy of operating big equipment. Jeff, on Jpaydirt, sometimes mentions the cost of things for his two big scrapers, excavator, and truck with lowboy trailer. I can remembering him being totally stoked when he managed to get a tire for the scraper for $4k, and that would have been a similar size to the skidders Tim's (Cotonto3) family use for their logging business. I bet those batteries Andrew bought were not cheap either.
We had a similar Pettibone crane work in our yard, way back in 1979/80 in Dubai, UAE. Very simple, nice build machine and easy to service. For your work it is a good asset to have.

They are easier to operate tban they look..boom lifts too. Just make sure the tilt is correct before raising the lift arm especially if on uneven terrain.
they were tough but heavy--they made few improvements and Galion and Grove became the picker of choice--Pettibone will definately get the job done though---only observation I have while transporting is to have less distance from block to boom sheaves --this reduces on side sway of block on rough ground and block will bounce upwards and can bang into boom---machine looks great for its age

I love your channel and all of your videos, you are a great builder and mechanic but here is some well meaning advice for your own safety, NEVER make a spark like that on the battery post, it can ignite the vapors coming from the battery and explode in your face. I always scoffed at the warnings of the "old guys" until we had one to blow up in our faces. That happened over 30 years ago and I still remember that day quite vividly. Be safe Andrew and thanks for sharing your projects with us!

I haven't seen an old Pettibone for decades, they had them at the railways when I was an apprentice (and THAT was a long time ago too lol)- and they were ancient then... I loved how you could have 'front wheel steer', 'all wheel steer' where the tyres turned in opposite directions (giving them a tiny turning circle, practically spinning on the spot!) or '4 wheel steer' where they turned in the same direction- allowing you to 'crab' diagonally... Watching a good driver in one was impressive, it was like they were dancing...
Battery’s and a fresh set of Glow plugs is what she needs and never ever use starting fluid In a Diesel engine always use Big Blast WD-40 .......Love your Videos being a Mechanic i find some of your repairs interesting.....👍🏻🤘🏻
What if i have a vehicle with factory installed starter pilot thing :) i know the fluid is weaker than whats in the cans but still thats factory equipmen for winter use
We used to put some gasoline on a rag and rest it near the air intake when we didn’t have starting fluid or WD-40. I know, I know, not good for a diesel engine but it got us going. 🤜🤛

Drove a Pettibone Cart-Lift for years. Great machine. Made pipe handling a simple task. Very capable machine that was very stable and safe even at max capacity.
I like watching letsdig18 videos before bed they bore me and put me to sleep, Andrews videos are the opposite they are motivating and make me want to go work on something.
Labradors, specifically yellows , have a docile personality and specifically understand that children are children and must be treated with gentleness and infinite patience. It's in their genes to understand this. Good dog, Levi!!!!
Labs are best with children. Had a black lab that would eat out of a 14 months old hand while she was standing up and never once nudge or spook her before or after he ate.
@@putmeincoach7663 my friend's black lab Boscoe would have the kids in the neighborhood follow him around like the Pied Piper and I saw them hang of his lip (true story) and he didn't nudge a bit. When I had a dog with my ex g.f. (a female yellow lab) my daughter would chase her around the rooms and the dog would look back to make sure she was keeping up. Amazing dogs. It's a sign of character with Andrew how much he cares for these dogs.
AC May I make a suggestion I know ya can fix and do anything way beyond Anything I can do but I have this set up on my truck , tractor , trailers etc... and I think ya would Love it it’s cheap and effective and most of all convenient. On my Ram diesel truck I bought some 1/0 wire black and red of course and ran it from the battery to rear and front bumper where I added to the wire an Anderson Plug that mounted to my bumpers . Also make sure ya get the covers they are a must Anyways I took a good ole long heavy duty set of jumper cables cut off the end of one side and put on the Anderson plug now I have a quick access to jump starting Anything and never have to open the hood kinda like a tow truck set up but I like the Anderson plugs better . My winch also has the Anderson plug makes it easy to winch from front and rear plug and play if ya will. I Left my winch pig tail long so I can throw it on my trailer and plug right in to my bumper . Just thought of you as I’ve seen ya jumpstart a lot of equipment and with all the machines ya have would be a nice set up for ya . Also now your jumper cables are proprietary to Your truck . So one end the regular alligators and the other the Anderson plug . Put the wire and plugs on all your trucks ya use and boom ya have a nice clean setup not needing to ope your hood again if ya need longer jumpers for whatever situation just Clip another pair to yours and away ya go !! Use mine all the time on trips and sure is nice just thought ya would like keep the videos we all Love them buddy I’ve learned a lot as I’m sure we all have !!
Hey Andrew I have 0 experience with cranes but I did notice the 2 cable clips that secure the end of the line to the boom tip. I was told once that whenever you load a cable you are supposed to use a 'tattletale clip' Its a clip that clamps a few inches of slack in the cable end but carries no load. The idea being if the load carrying clips ever slip you will know because the slack will be taken out of the 'tattletale'. Maybe you already knew that, thought Id mention it. Go whole hog. Clean terminal ends then battery spray. Mini solar panel, charger and it can sit. How many pieces of equipment would need this? As few as 2. As many as 8? Cost? Just looked them up on EBAY. Price is all over the place. Your thought has the advantage of no more jump starts. Less battery replacement. I like your thought. However, I believe all of his time will be spent on the new castle roof. Maybe he'll address this afterwoods. It'll save him time, money and aggravation. I'd like to see a video of AC doing this and general maintenance on each piece of equipment. But he is only one guy and he's got to make a living. But a nice 2 hour plus video. You never know.

I was working on a project at a local papermill (retired IBEW electrician) that had several cranes onsite. One was a Pettibone, looked to be a little larger than the one in the video. The site was off limits to regular traffic, but a phone company employee kept parking his work van in the worksite area. Having been warned to keep out, he kept coming back and parked at the side of the Pettibone close to the rear wheel. The Pettibone operator came back from lunch, started up the machine, and proceeded to put out the outriggers. The outrigger on his right rear side went down thru the side of the van and pinned it to the ground. You should have seen the phone company guy when he came back. The van was totally destroyed, the Pettibone only got a few scratches.
They ain't called *a BIG Hammer fer nuttin.* Last job I had I had a drawer in my tool chest JUST for hammers. Think I had 5 hammers plus some cold chisels 2 or 3 likely. Sledge hammer was in a corner. For BIG jobs we had another Hammer. Parked in the 1st slot (when it was *plugged in.) What kinda Hammer needs to be PLUGGED IN?? The crane has three (3) speeds. When you road make sure you disconnect the two pump gear box ,,,, take it out of four wheel drive. S/N should be stamped on right side frame rail near cab door and on top of frame rail next to engine left side.
There was a Pettibone log skidder for sale in Australia, never seen one before, they used loader axles, Detroit engine, truck gearbox, winch on rear and blade on front, it was all cobbled together in thick plate, welds were rough, it was a goer asking $5000au, this crane is a lot different and well made.
@@firesurfer andrew is a smart cookie. maybe there is a reason he didn't do that. for all I know 6 volt batteries are cheaper. But i would think they would be more being they are so uncommon these days. unless its a 6 volt system and someone prior to andrew wired it wrong. but i doubt it. alot of those old machines are 24 volt.

Pettibone crane were made in Rome Ny my home town I remember seeing them being made when driving by the plant then they left Rome Ny

They used to build steam engines in the factory were these were built.

I haven't seen an old Pettibone for decades, they had them at the railways when I was an apprentice (and THAT was a long time ago too lol)- and they were ancient then...
I loved how you could have 'front wheel steer', 'all wheel steer' where the tyres turned in opposite directions (giving them a tiny turning circle, practically spinning on the spot!) or '4 wheel steer' where they turned in the same direction- allowing you to 'crab' diagonally...
Watching a good driver in one was impressive, it was like they were dancing...

Battery’s and a fresh set of Glow plugs is what she needs and never ever use starting fluid
In a Diesel engine always use Big Blast WD-40 .......Love your Videos being a Mechanic i find some of your repairs interesting.....👍🏻🤘🏻
What if i have a vehicle with factory installed starter pilot thing :) i know the fluid is weaker than whats in the cans but still thats factory equipmen for winter use
We used to put some gasoline on a rag and rest it near the air intake when we didn’t have starting fluid or WD-40. I know, I know, not good for a diesel engine but it got us going.

Drove a Pettibone Cart-Lift for years. Great machine. Made pipe handling a simple task. Very capable machine that was very stable and safe even at max capacity.

Labradors, specifically yellows , have a docile personality and specifically understand that children are children and must be treated with gentleness and infinite patience. It's in their genes to understand this. Good dog, Levi!!!!
Labs are best with children. Had a black lab that would eat out of a 14 months old hand while she was standing up and never once nudge or spook her before or after he ate.
@@putmeincoach7663 my friend's black lab Boscoe would have the kids in the neighborhood follow him around like the Pied Piper and I saw them hang of his lip (true story) and he didn't nudge a bit. When I had a dog with my ex g.f. (a female yellow lab) my daughter would chase her around the rooms and the dog would look back to make sure she was keeping up. Amazing dogs. It's a sign of character with Andrew how much he cares for these dogs.

AC May I make a suggestion I know ya can fix and do anything way beyond Anything I can do but I have this set up on my truck , tractor , trailers etc... and I think ya would
Love it it’s cheap and effective and most of all convenient. On my Ram diesel truck I bought some 1/0 wire black and red of course and ran it from the battery to rear and front bumper where I added to the wire an Anderson Plug that mounted to my bumpers . Also make sure ya get the covers they are a must Anyways I took a good ole long heavy duty set of jumper cables cut off the end of one side and put on the Anderson plug now I have a quick access to jump starting Anything and never have to open the hood kinda like a tow truck set up but I like the Anderson plugs better . My winch also has the Anderson plug makes it easy to winch from front and rear plug and play if ya will. I
Left my winch pig tail long so I can throw it on my trailer and plug right in to my bumper . Just thought of you as I’ve seen ya jumpstart a lot of equipment and with all the machines ya have would be a nice set up for ya . Also now your jumper cables are proprietary to
Your truck . So one end the regular alligators and the other the Anderson plug . Put the wire and plugs on all your trucks ya use and boom ya have a nice clean setup not needing to ope your hood again if ya need longer jumpers for whatever situation just Clip another pair to yours and away ya go !! Use mine all the time on trips and sure is nice just thought ya would like keep the videos we all

Hey Andrew I have 0 experience with cranes but I did notice the 2 cable clips that secure the end of the line to the boom tip. I was told once that whenever you load a cable you are supposed to use a 'tattletale clip' Its a clip that clamps a few inches of slack in the cable end but carries no load. The idea being if the load carrying clips ever slip you will know because the slack will be taken out of the 'tattletale'. Maybe you already knew that, thought Id mention it. Thanks for the great videos, always enjoy the content.

Go whole hog. Clean terminal ends then battery spray. Mini solar panel, charger and it can sit. How many pieces of equipment would need this? As few as 2. As many as 8? Cost? Just looked them up on EBAY. Price is all over the place. Your thought has the advantage of no more jump starts. Less battery replacement. I like your thought. However, I believe all of his time will be spent on the new castle roof. Maybe he'll address this afterwoods. It'll save him time, money and aggravation. I'd like to see a video of AC doing this and general maintenance on each piece of equipment. But he is only one guy and he's got to make a living. But a nice 2 hour plus video. You never know.

I was working on a project at a local papermill (retired IBEW electrician) that had several cranes onsite. One was a Pettibone, looked to be a little larger than the one in the video. The site was off limits to regular traffic, but a phone company employee kept parking his work van in the worksite area. Having been warned to keep out, he kept coming back and parked at the side of the Pettibone close to the rear wheel. The Pettibone operator came back from lunch, started up the machine, and proceeded to put out the outriggers. The outrigger on his right rear side went down thru the side of the van and pinned it to the ground. You should have seen the phone company guy when he came back. The van was totally destroyed, the Pettibone only got a few scratches.

I used a very similar Grove crane to hang engines and propellers on C-130 aircraft. Really enjoyed that crane and it's capabilities.

They ain't called *a BIG Hammer fer nuttin.* Last job I had I had a drawer in my tool chest JUST for hammers. Think I had 5 hammers plus some cold chisels 2 or 3 likely. Sledge hammer was in a corner. For BIG jobs we had another Hammer. Parked in the 1st slot (when it was *plugged in.) What kinda Hammer needs to be PLUGGED IN?? The crane has three (3) speeds. When you road make sure you disconnect the two pump gear box ,,,, take it out of four wheel drive. S/N should be stamped on right side frame rail near cab door and on top of frame rail next to engine left side.

There was a Pettibone log skidder for sale in Australia, never seen one before, they used loader axles, Detroit engine, truck gearbox, winch on rear and blade on front, it was all cobbled together in thick plate, welds were rough, it was a goer asking $5000au, this crane is a lot different and well made.

2 - 6 volt battery in series =12volts. you should have bought two 12 volt batteries and put them in parallel. twice the cca.

@@firesurfer andrew is a smart cookie. maybe there is a reason he didn't do that. for all I know 6 volt batteries are cheaper. But i would think they would be more being they are so uncommon these days. unless its a 6 volt system and someone prior to andrew wired it wrong. but i doubt it. alot of those old machines are 24 volt.
@@justinpaone2227 I think it's supposed to have two 12 volt in series. I've never seen one with 12 volts . And 6 volt batteries are expensive.
Those 6 volt batteries probably have twice the CCA as the same size 12V battery would have, it likely ends up being the same.
