This is always a rough episode, but it is also a great one, as it does resonate with pretty much everyone. In good news, it can't really get worse from here! Get a good hug, eat some good food, and enjoy a little of life. The best of things can only be the best in contrast to the worst.

I'm amazed at how quickly she picked up on Tucker's bad vibes - I think the show does a good job of portraying him as just a struggling dad, the only real red flag I've seen people pick up on in the past is when he pushes up his glasses and it hides his eyes. Classic anime villain move.
I can make a promise about this show. Going forward there will be no more terrible, childish attempts at making a talking Chimera (because Shou's dead)

You remember right, according to the giant polls at Anime Planet, Shou Tucker is the most hated character in all of anime, and has held that title against all challengers for 20 years. And you're spot on about Ed's shame and grief. He's carrying so much guilt about what happened, and that makes him really vulnerable to Tucker's bullshit comparison. Two quick manga things: there's a great Al moment in the manga that didn't make it into the show, when he stops Ed from killing Tucker. Tucker starts to say something and Al quietly, politely says basically "I'm protecting Ed, not you. Shut up or I'll kill you myself." The other is that Scar doesnt say "two human souls," he says "two souls." Fans like to believe he's praying for Nina and Alexander, not Nina and Tucker.
In the original 2003 version the scene was even worse. In that version Tucker had no reason to do it, he knew he would be arrested and executed if he did it but also just didn't want to go back on the street, so he just decided to do it to see if he could. Also instead of Al stopping Ed from punching Tucker, Nina stops him by biting his coat. You also got 2 episodes with Nina and Alexander in the 2003 version as well. This English version also has a mistranslation, at 14:07 instead of "Two human souls" he actually just says "Two souls" he never says human because he is talking about Nina and Alexander, not Tucker, who is the only character who dies and is shown being dragged to hell in the Manga instead of ascending to heaven. This episode and the last are kind of pair. The last episode showed the extremes of religion going to far and this one shows science going to far. EDIT: Never mind you mentioned that lol

and don't forget how the brothers discover what is left of nina, idk how they managed to get that image through in a kid's show. brotherhood only watchers do not know what pain really is, how much trauma a human can endure from a single scene.
What was worse in my opinion about 2003 was that the interaction between the boys and Tucker and Nina was prolonged and Tucker was not as instantly seen as evil...those episodes hurt more in 2003. FMA or FMAB...he's still a piece of sh!t

Context about Shou Tucker. Reactors rarely notice this context but it helps to understand this for later. State Alchemists conduct resarch for the military and provide their research data on Assessment Day. Their findings then get fed to other teams that expand on the research.
In your reaction to episode 3, I said she will eventually enjoy this show and be traumatized as well just like we are. Well this episode 4 is just one of the few (and the first) traumatizing episodes. This is one of the reasons why this anime is also called Feels Metal Alchemist.

I can't imagine people who are way younger watching this moment xd. Can you imagine watching this at 8y/o for the first time? That was me. Edit: specifically, the second dosc of the 2003 vers. Episodes 5-8. This was the Train Hijacking, Tucker Family, State Certification, Barry the Chopper Abducting Winry In A Meat Truck, and Scar's Introduction episodes.
FMAB definitely over-foreshadows Tucker's villainy. In the original series, you are given multiple episodes with the Tucker family, and the twist hits a lot harder emotionally. But, FMAB puts this back-to-back with the Father Cornello episode, which the two of them together is very important for the show overall, thematically.

It's just wrong on so many levels. You got just the obv; WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ANYONE. Then we have the fact that state alchemists actually do make good money, I'm not sure what he was spending all his on cause it sure wasn't many specimens so he could have maybe moved outa town to a cheaper area had the wife start a farm while he worked on a new idea cause he's crap at making chimeras. There is also another fact about this (well several really) that makes it even more pointless what he's doing. And finally just go get it off my chest is it really that hard to find a homeless person forgotten and a stray dog? I mean just walk around with bacon in ur pocket and look for the guy with red eyes, oh and bring something for the dog too.
At an anime convention, there was a panel on what it would take to bring cat girls into the real world. Short answer: unethical science. It was a clever way to expose anime nerds to some pretty dense science including genetics and genetic engineering. The panelist offered an award for asking "the most f'ed up question"-it was a framed picture of Tucker.
To this day i will always say FMA 2003 version did a way better job with this arc.. first of all the way they set it up is to make sure by the end you are completely caught off guard. There was no sense of "this guy seems suspicious i dont trust him" this arc was expanded to 3 episodes and you came to actually like Shou Tucker.. so when it finally does happen it crushes you.. also they actually show the Chimeras remains after Scar dealt with them and trust me that shit will "scar" you.. not gonna lie im a bit annoyed that no reactor has the guts to actually do a reaction on the 2003 version.. the ending is completely different and the movie that comes after is dope asf too

The Shou Tucker and Mina storyline was SO much worse in the original FMA because you got to know them over a dozen episodes instead of 2.

Here's something scary, Shou Tucker isn't even the worst anime dad, no spoilers, but watch "Made in Abyss".
At an anime convention, there was a panel on what it would take to bring cat girls into the real world. Short answer: unethical science. It was a clever way to expose anime nerds to some pretty dense science including genetics and genetic engineering. The panelist offered an award for asking "the most f'ed up question"-it was a framed picture of Tucker.
To this day i will always say FMA 2003 version did a way better job with this arc.. first of all the way they set it up is to make sure by the end you are completely caught off guard. There was no sense of "this guy seems suspicious i dont trust him" this arc was expanded to 3 episodes and you came to actually like Shou Tucker.. so when it finally does happen it crushes you.. also they actually show the Chimeras remains after Scar dealt with them and trust me that shit will "scar" you.. not gonna lie im a bit annoyed that no reactor has the guts to actually do a reaction on the 2003 version.. the ending is completely different and the movie that comes after is dope asf too
Them saying if it's not important, they wouldn't bring it up. If they're on a non storytelling important business trip, no need to mention it.
Maybe a little mention for some things, cause the mystery around Deku's dad is crazy 😅
