My mom cleaned houses in southern California, sometimes the homes of the rich and famous. Etta James used to pay my mom $500 to polish the silver dishes Etta put out for Christmas. One year on my mom's birthday, Etta spent a week in Vegas, and Etta flew my mother and her best friend (who cleaned Etta's house, but hated polishing silver dishes) out to Vegas for a whole week and treated her like one of her own. During this time, she asked my mom if she was still seeing my worthless loser dad, and when my mom said she was, Etta said "My girl, you don't need that raggedy old man." Etta was so, so right. All of this happened a few decades ago, but thank you Etta for always providing the means for my mom to make Christmas wonderful for my sisters and me. Selfless, generous, thoughtful woman.

I remember listening to this in the 60s, sitting in a small booth in a tiny diner, where each table had it's own little jukebox 3 songs for a dime... hanging out with friends, damn those days don't even seem like it ever happened,in comparison to the hatred and prejudice we see today... generations so blind to the beauty of real music and emotion
this white guy chris stapelton made a song called tennessee whiskey, he copied the sound of etta james song. ( i'd rather go blind. play it and listen to it.
It was actually written (well, copied from Etta James) in 1981(ish) by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove and originally recorded by David Allan Coe. I think it was recorded by a couple others as well, with Stapleton just being one of the most recent. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Soul music is the best music ever... I grown up with that because my daddy loves it so much... Soul music comes directly from deep down in the heart and soul.... Gabriele, Germany ♥️
Beyonce could NEVER compare to the Queen's voice no matter how much she tries, Etta has a voice that leaves people in tears from how much soul u can feel in her songs ♥️ forever the best RIP Queen♥️

I did a talent show last year and I remember that I was PISSED OFF at the time at my b/friend of many years. The more I thought about the incident, the madder I got (and I have a bad temper) and I just let go and belted the hell out of this song! I'm no Etta, but I can imagine HOW she felt.
I got to see Etta at one of her last concerts at Red Rocks in Colorado, she was with BB King and Al Green. If you have ever been to Red Rocks you know this concert was amazing
Dear Debbie, I think, You never heard this song sang by Chicken Shack in 1968 - that is the best coverversion, I ever heard, an also fine cover is sang by Mick Hucknall, with best regards from Germany Horst
There is a Top Tier of Women who sang their songs with Passion and the ability to tug at your innermost feelings. Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Patsy Cline, and Grandma would put Ella Fitzgerald on that list also and there are others, but these Women gave us the ability to share our feelings about Love, finding it or losing it. That my Friends is Truly one of the best gifts a person can give.
@@greywolf065: Most definitely, there are many Women that I didn't list but it seems that there's a lot fewer these days that have that Genuine deliverance to their songs.
@@RichardVandyke-lj9ni: Yes, Janis sang with great emotion and it's sad that she cut her carrer short with her life choices. My bad choices Thankfully didn't cost me my life but we have all made them and hopefully we learn from them.
I loved when she disses Beyonce with her bad arse attitude of "CAN'T TOUCH ORIGINALITY, litte girl, get on back to your junior league"🤭 gotta love Etta James!! ❤
I feel this song in the pit of my stomach. It’s the story telling and the pain in her voice. That can’t be translated by another artist in a cover 🥺 (Edit) Just to clarify the song can be covered well of course. I’m not knocking any artist who covers any song. I was taking about no one being able to cover her raw, unfiltered, heartbreak. That’s her story and in my opinion no matter how emotional the retelling is, it doesn’t beat what, “I” feel when Etta sings it.
Baby Boy this is only person that sings this better.than you! Ide loved to hear you and her sing this man it. Would have been so powerful and strong! The queen of soul!
She was such a gift to music. The pain she dealt with in her life, was conveyed in her voice. A remarkable singer who could move you with her songs, and voice. Rest in peace Ms James, and thank you for all your wonderful music.

My 17 year old daughter loves this music. No Swifty songs in our house. When she listens to Etta, Nina, Tina, Aretha etc... she turns the volume up and starts to sing along to the songs.... Gives me chills eatch time, will never forget these moments.
I was fortunate to see "LITTLE EDDA JAMES" in person quite a lot of times . She was always the second or third headliner but she was a show stopper . I remember she would come on stage alone in a blue sequined dress and that was all she needed.. she would make me forget the headliner
Yeah I felt this dedication to my ex, and uncovered his double life. I really mourned quickly and moved on even though I thought I could make it work with him. This is a reflection for me and how much I’ve grown through love and self love.
Yes I agree. That's what makes the the blues so soul felt it reaches deep and grabs the heart and tears are shed. Janice Joplin sang all about her pain, and yes she does have soul listen to maybe, and so many others
My crush told me about Etta james a few months ago. I LOVE old music, mainly Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bobby Darin. I recently got into Beethoven too, actually. But Etta james is 100% on my list of favorite artists too now. This song, along with many others are on my favorite songs to listen to now. I don't know if I will ever end up dating this girl, but I know as a fact I will never stop appreciating her for the songs she's showed me, and for the good times we've had together, even if those times were just as friends. Even if we don't end up being more than friends, I still want her in my life. I knew from the second I met her, that she was someone special. A 20 year old man can hope ands dream still, can't he? If we ever end up in a relationship: I hope you know this Emma, I have loved you for months, and I know my heart will keep on loving you for a long, long time. My 13 year old roommate has told me on multiple occasions that my pupils dilate whenever I talk about you, every time. I have told you this on multiple occasions: I am deeply in love with you, and I sincerely think I will marry you day. If there's anyone I would give my last name to, it is you. I love you. I am quite drunk right now, but from 5 years of experience, I am the most truthful when I am in this state. As most people, who knows me personally will definitely know, I am quite honest, even when I'm sober, so my drunk state of mind makes me even more honest - sometimes scarily honest, as it removes my filter completely. Honestly guys, I really hope to one day call this girl my girlfriend, and even more my wife. I will show her this message, if this dream becomes reality one day. After reading my comment through, I feel like this is more of a declaration of love rather than a commment - but I'm okay with that. I hope you all have a lovely day, and a fantastic life. Remember, you are important to someone out there, and their life is improved because YOU are in it. I, along with many others love you
***** I like Etta James and own some of her music. I feel exactly opposite of you however, I think Beth sings it with much more feeling and soul. I guess that's why there are so many different styles of music and singers, everybody has a different taste. It's all subjective.
I am a white guy from London England and I have been a soul boy my whole life. Nothing unusual about white people loving soul music. Indeed singing it some of them can even sing it (check out Elu "Paperboy" Reed for example) I listen to soul music out of choice more than any other genre although as i have got older my tastes have broadened but Jackie Wilson, Tyrone Davis, Lou Rawls all get played almost daily in my house or in my car... 😎
Her eyes tell a familiar story. Generations of men and women in my family had the same eyes. Some things don’t have to be said. The eyes are truly a window.

Beyonce, chicken shack, beth hart etc. don't cover these kind of songs to show you how much better they can do it. They do this because these songs have real meaning to them.

Tucka has a song called cry baby cry and it sounds identical like,I RATHER GO BLIND, by ETTA JAMES, and most people don't know it.
I love Tennessee Whiskey. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. @francesivey7811

True
I did a talent show last year and I remember that I was PISSED OFF at the time at my b/friend of many years. The more I thought about the incident, the madder I got (and I have a bad temper) and I just let go and belted the hell out of this song! I'm no Etta, but I can imagine HOW she felt.

But Rachel Crow sang it better. If you like passion, you'd have to agree.

Adele has the same vibe
@@greywolf065: Most definitely, there are many Women that I didn't list but it seems that there's a lot fewer these days that have that Genuine deliverance to their songs.

Everytime my mom would play Tennessee whiskey I'd think I swear this is someone else's music. I was right
They used this arrangement for Tennessee Whiskey.
I love Tennessee whiskey also now that u mention it I do hear the resemblance
That's the blues in a nutshell.
Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey is a tribute to this song, was what he said in an interview.
Elvis did it, Johnny Cash did it, The Beatles did it, Led Zep did it (so on so forth)...thats how those kind of people make their music

Hi how are you doing?
Hi Good Day 😁
I feel this song in the pit of my stomach. It’s the story telling and the pain in her voice. That can’t be translated by another artist in a cover 🥺
(Edit) Just to clarify the song can be covered well of course. I’m not knocking any artist who covers any song. I was taking about no one being able to cover her raw, unfiltered, heartbreak. That’s her story and in my opinion no matter how emotional the retelling is, it doesn’t beat what, “I” feel when Etta sings it.
Yes! Even Beyonce..I mean when she sang "sittin here thinkn" just so perfect 😌🙏🏽

2024 was really rough year but I’m glad y’all still a live let’s start new year with ETTA JAMES 2025🎉
