Joan Van Ark steps Behind The Rope. One of the most recognized names in Nighttime Soaps, 80s Icon, Joan Van Ark. Joan is best known for her role as Valene Ewing on Knots Landing, one of the longest running prime time soap operas in history. We are thrilled to have Joan here today to chat about her career, and life for that matter, in its entirety. We reminisce about all the glory that was, is, and will always be Valene Ewing and Knot’s Landing including how Joan was cast, co-stars and real life best friends Donna Mills and Michelle Lee, the other recognizable faces that popped by the worlds most famous cul-de-sac such as Nicolette Sheridan and Alec Baldwin, the fact that it spun off from Dallas and her decision to leave the show one season before its finale. Moving on from Knots, Joan opens up about the evolution of women in Hollywood from the 1980s when shows like Knots were all the rage to present day, answering questions like how far have we come and how much farther do we have to go. We also chatted with Joan about some of our other favorite shows she has appeared on like Nip/Tuck and RuPaul’s Drag Race (yes we think Mama Ru is a Knots fan!). Of course we had to chat with Joan about her thoughts on Reality TV and actresses like Lisa Rinna, Denise Richards and Garcelle Beauvais who have become Housewives throughout the years. Joan chats and shares stories from her illustrious frothy year career about the pressures of aging in Hollywood, the ever presence of plastic surgery amongst The Hollywood Elite, and the #MeToo Movement. Finally we chat with Joan about the current crop of television she has been binging, the current crop of “A List” actresses she puts her stamp of approval on, all the many current projects she that are keeping her busy and with reboots running rampant chat, hoping to will into existence, a Knot’s Landing Reboot. Ahh, a girl can dream, can’t she. Miss Van Ark, we are not worthy!

I agree also Knots landing, is very Underrated show. It didn't get enough credit like Dallas or Dynasty did.
As crazy as knots was it was the most believable out of dynasty Dallas and falcon crest.
I'll have to check out Knots Landing reruns, I've never seen it before but I've always heard people talk about it and Falcon Crest.

Oh, I LOVED Joan as Valene. She really made the character so genuine and believable. I also agree with her 1000% that 'Knots Landing' was so appealing and addictive because it was a realistic setting - normal (but dramatic!) people living on a real cul-de-sac in real houses. Bringing Abby onto the show took it to a completely different level and was pure nighttime soap opera nirvana. It will always be one of my all-time favorite shows because of the great writing and acting. I wish it was available for digital download 😞

I wish the cast of Dallas and Joan Van Ark, would talk about the late great Jim Davis and what it was like working with such a great actor who owned the character of Jock Ewing, so much so that it was unthinkable to ever recast the role after he passed away. His character was so important that the character would be such a force even after his death. I mean for ten years after when the show went off the air, Jock was still a integral part of the show.

It was July-August, Bonnie Scotland's summer holidays, my mum would shout me in for knots landing which filled our tv screens (back then we only had 3 channels) till Dallas cane back on September.

Dallas producers casted every major role, perfectly! I can’t imagine anyone playing those roles. Nobody on earth could’ve played Valene Ewing better than Joan Van Ark! Joan Van Ark had to be the greatest actress of the prime time soaps.. The best storyline ever, of the night time soaps had to be the kidnapping of Val’s babies, storyline!

She was such a good actress as Val, you really believed she hated JR. I enjoyed her on Dallas and Knots Landing. It was fun when she returned in the Dallas reboot in 2012.
