My father had his kilt made in 1977 in Paisley Scotland. He wore it every New Years Eve, he wore it to every Scottish dance he and my mother went to ( Monthly), he wore it to my brother and my own wedding, he wore it to both of my children's baptismal. When he died, my nephew wore it to the funeral and then a year later my son wore it for his wedding. Needless to say, the quality of the kilt is amazing, the workmanship unequaled and the pride of our family to have such a piece is priceless! That kilt is most definitely and always will be a family heirloom.

Hi there I also understand the traditions of textile industry and love the idea of kilts myself I have two myself my family have been weaving (by hand) since the 17th century I think it’s awesome that His Majesty King Charles III is making sure that inherited crafting weather it’s kilt making, weaving, or other types of craft does not go endangered.

Just got back from Scotland... Now I am an American (& proud of it) with three Scottish bloodline (Wallace, Burns & Scott... and again, VERY proud)... Outside of a couple of other men in Edinburgh, no one else was in a kilt anywhere there (I wore one EVERY DAY I was in God's Country, brought from home in North Carolina). MANY a local waved, gave me the 'thumbs up' and even crossed the street to talk to me. So I CAN say, it is not the norm, but they DO approve and love to see it. And yes, more than one other fellow tourist to that great country stopped me and asked for directions thinking I was local.... that made my wife laugh more than once on our visit.

I mean as somebody of Scottish heritage who wears a kilt, kind of blows my mind what you’re saying here. I know God knows how many people who wear kilts every day for their standard dress. From utility kilts to traditional kilts. Making and wearing is not that much on the decline. There are hundreds of new tartans registered with the Scottish register of tartness, every single day. There are new materials being developed to create kilts and Sporan‘s, leather replacements being brainstormed for more sustainable and animal friendly options. Heck, one of the most Premier kilt makers in the world is in the US, USAKilts. Yes shows like outlander and even Highlander or Rob Roy help with getting more people gravitated toward an amazing traditional garment. But the truth is it’s far from dying out.

Thanks for highlighting Grahams work I think it’s important that the kilt and tartan evolves Vivienne Westwood was a great trailblazer of using the fabric in her designs in the punk era and it’s now great to think we have more younger Scottish designers taking it on. If anyone is in Scotland just now the VA in Dundee does have a whole exhibition about Tartan running it’s so much more than kilts.

Interesting how they highlight the art and craftsmanship of a respected garment but when it comes to the idea of a male anchor wearing one, the staff begins to laugh and to almost “poke fun” at the idea. Seems rather counter productive.

  • @TheBOFAcookie

The military kilt has up to 7 yards of wool material. Solders either raise the kilt or parade over a mirror to be checked as underwear free., The kilt wearer can sit and raw his legs up under the kilt when sleeping or resting, There are no laundries at the front line and the importance of being open to the air especially in battles past was a hygiene issue. Solders elsewhere wore baggy trousers which just delayed potential health issues. The traditional rejoinder to the question ''what's worn under the kilt'? is nothing at all, it's in perfect working order.

I’ve always thought that kilts were interesting. Although they do look suspiciously like mini-skirts.
Anyway, kilts are comfortable because they fit almost anyone. Along those same lines, it should be possible to make a pair of shorts that would fit anyone. That way you wouldn’t have to guess your size when ordering shorts on-line.
Take a piece of cloth that’s about twenty-five inches by a hundred inches. Then, install a series of hollow rivets down the center line, a little towards one side.
You would wrap the material around your waist a couple of times, and then lace the hollow rivets between your legs, like you lace a pair of shoes. The kilt becomes shorts.
So you’d then have a pair of shorts that would fit almost any waist size. But not Fatty Arbuckle. Or Tom Thumb.
