I've just binge watched so many of your videos. You have a brilliant style and your videos are so easy to watch. So much useful info but so easy to digest. As a result I have just ordered an R8 and RF 50mm f1.8. Thanks James, you have been invaluable in this decision and I look forward to many more vids from you!
@@JamesReader +1 on the style you make your videos - they're so engaging and informative, they really invite for a binge watch! :) Already own an R8 with a few RF primes and some older EF lenses, but was still hesitant to sell my old 6D body due to some occasions where I also prefer to use two bodies + primes instead of one body with a zoom. Thanks to your praise of the older EOS R I decided to finally let go of 6D and can now fully migrate to RF system. The info on 35mm and 85mm primes was also very valuable!
Canon is really good to its budget consumers. I have had one of their DSLRs for a long time, and I recently bought a r100. The RF 50 mm and the 100 to 400 have been really wonderful for the money.
The 50mm 1.8 whether RF or EF is the best lens for the money by a long shot. If you’re broke, an older EF camera and the 50mm will do everything you need to learn highly advanced techniques with primes.
@jimdshea there isn't a vast difference in IQ, the RF is slightly better in my experience. A bit quieter than the EF STM I think, but still audible. Definitely quieter than the old EF 50 1.8 II!
As a professional I have two EOS Rs which I've had for several years. They are great cameras and I use them all the time. Photo quality is excellent. I also have the 85mm F/2 and I love it for portrait work. I do some street photography just as a hobby, I don't make any money from it, and for that I use a Canon EOS RP. This camera is amazing. I'm always impressed by the images coming from the RP. It's also small enough to easily carry around. I typically shoot the RP with a 50mm F1.8 but I also carry an 85mm F/2 in my bag. But I could actually use the RP when I do my professional work if I wanted to--it's not strictly for amateurs. Amazing cameras. You did an excellent job. I don't shoot video, so I'm not interested in what any camera does with video capabilities.
The Tamron EF 1.4 35mm is a wonderful, inexpensive lens and the Tamron EF 24-70 and 70 -200 EF are both excellent. I have been using them with the EOS R since the camera was released and I have been very happy. ! also use the Samyang 1.4 85mm but I am not sure if it is still available.
I'm sorry for this question as I'm super new to the camera world, but I've heard Canon doesn't allow third party lenses on their cameras. If that's true then how are you able to use Tamron lens on your EOS R? Please don't mind me asking 😊
Thanks. Ive been a professional portrait/fashion photographer for 18 years now. Best BUDGET setup for portraits IMO is the R10 and the RF 50 f/1.8 You get a camera with a great sensor, fantastic AF and a cheap but very good 85mm equivalent (81mm) lens with the crop sensor for under $1k. Thats $500 cheaper than just an R8 body. I just did a shoot for a modeling agency using this combo along with the RF 35 f/1.8 and it worked wonderfully. I even used the 18-45 kit lens indoors with lights where I was up around f/6.3 anyways and those look great too. Cant beat it for the price. Runner up would be the RP, which Canon has refurbished right now for only $599. A steal IMO.
I'm building out my lens kit for this. Starting with a 35mm 1.8 because that's my favorite. The big things I'm considering are image stabilization in the lenses (due to the R8 lacking it combined with the smaller size). The decision probably comes down to getting a zoom vs just getting the 85mm F2. I like the idea of going with a lens kit heavy in fast prime lens for this camera. The huge zoom lenses feel too large for this camera.
for me on tight budget (beginner level, just for fun, family and travel use) 1. Canon EOS R6 Mark II (new) 2. RF 24mm - 105mm F4 maybe buy RF 85mm F2 next year if necessary

Hi James, thanks, great video as always - RF 24-105 4.0 is my favourite travel lens, too! I'd be interested to see how the EF 35 2.0 IS USM stands up against the RF 35 1.8 STM.
@@JamesReader I own it, and can confirm it's very sharp even wide open, with almost no CAs - I don't own the RF version, though. The EF's 35 2.0 IS USM AF is instant, very precise and almost silent. I would love to see adapted Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8L usm in your comparison. I have one that I'm using with the EOS R and how much I try my pictures are not sharp at all!
Sorry late to the party, just watched this excellent video, which focused on affordable, budget friendly equipment; thank you. I recent purchased (2023) the following: EOS R + 24-105 f4 L kit Also, 50 f1.8; 85 f2 macro and 100-400 f5.6-8 lenses Along with the K&F CPL and 2-32, 32-512 variable ND filters; and a K&F tripod. I'm a keen amateur and previously owned the EOS 80D. Would you consider this a suitable budget setup, for someone primarily focused on photography over video (95%/5%).
Thank you for watching Michael! Honestly that sounds like the perfect set up to me. Amazing set of versatile lenses and one of the best photo quality cameras I have used! This setup should last you many years. Haven’t tried the K&F items but I know of a few pros who use their filters so I’m sure they are great.

Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? In price it is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work?
Both lenses are great. You will get a little sharper image from the Sigma if you step it down to 1.8. Personally, having tried both, I preferred using the native RF 35mm 1.8 for its small size and weight. Image quality is pretty similar.
@@JamesReader Thank you! Canon RF has more chromatic aberrations. But I noticed that many people are really ready to sacrifice image quality for the sake of size and weight. I haven't started working much in this area yet. But does weight really have that much of an impact on comfort? 😅
I actually love all of you reviews. Im getting a new camera because of you lol. I'm still deciding between the R8 and R6MKii but my question for you is: If I get the R8 with 24-50mm or R6MKii with 24-100mm SHOULD I keep either of those lenses?? If not I can buy the just body version instead to save $ and put that towards a lens that you recommended her (probably the 35mm) But are either of those two kit lenses worth keeping?
Thank you for watching Danny! I haven’t had chance to try out those kit lenses so can’t comment on their quality but they are definitely versatile focal zooms and will have you covered for a bit of everything. I really love the 35mm 1.8, so i would personally go in that direction but I think you’ll happy either way
How’s the RF 24-104 do for action in low (gymnasium) lighting? Looking for a versatile RF option to keep in bag aside from my 70-200 2.8. I’ll primarily be shooting volleyball.
The best option for this would be the 28-70 f2. The constant f2 aperture will allot you to keep your iso lower and shutter speed higher, great for indoor sport in less than ideal lighting. A very expensive lens however so other options are adapting the EF 24-70 2.8 or as you mentioned the RF 24-105 if you are okay with pushing the ISO.
Absolutely brillant video. Discovered your channel and subscribed right away. Currently catching up with all your vids. Thank you very much for all the hard work. Bought RF 35, 50 and 85 based on your advices. Cheers
Could I bother you with a question. I'm deciding over a Eos R or a R8. With the 1.4 firmware update on the R it gets good eye tracking (witch the R8 has a great one in contrast) and I keep seeing the R8 has overheating and weather sealing problems where the R is a tank. I shoot portrait and fashion (not fast moving subjects, not video) and for commercial work I'm leaning to the 30 mgpx of the R (r5 is out of budget) but I keep wondering if the Dynamic range/shadow recovery/color/image quality of the R8 is that different to the R to justify less battery, no weather sealing, potencial overheating and 24 mgpx (most people say it doesnt matter but If you have worked with commercial clients, the ALWAYS want different crops after being told to get it on camera haha so more resolution for me is almost a must). I know lens quality is pivotal but I'm trying to see witch body is more suitable for me. Thank you in advance for any feedback!!
Hey Nico! In your shoes I would go for the R. I’ve compared the R for dynamic range etc against the R5 and R6 and in my opinion it keeps up so well that it’s not a concern. The EOS R has a tried and true sensor relied on by many pros in the industry. I would only recommend the R8 over it if you need good video quality. Other than that the R is excellent.
Hi. I wasn't going to be looking for another camera for awhile, but was wondering for low-light photography, would you still recommend the older camera models? I keep going back between the RP, R, R8, and R6 mark I in consideration of price, while also wanting to be able to take nightime pictures.
Absolutely! The EOS R keeps up really well with the R6 Mark 1 and the R5 in terms of high iso performance. I tested this in an earlier video and shared raw files for you to check out. Objectively the R6 mark 1 is probably the best low light performer but in reality they are all very close.
I would generally go with whatever you can get a better deal on. You can record longer on the R8 without overheating compared to the R6, if that’s important. If you need dual card slots and IBIS then R6 is the way to go. Image quality in photo and video are so comparable that you won’t notice a difference between the two.
@@JamesReader Thank you for responding. I'm not going to use it for video. Just concerned about the lack of IBIS on R8. Will this have an effect on the still image? I'm wondering about the advantages of IBIS on still photographs. If there is no impact, I will choose R8. Please share your ideas. I appreciate your time.
would you reccomend the R8 over the R6MII for someone who is looking for a camera for family vacations and recording sporting events to create highlight/recruiting videos?
As long as you like the smaller body I think the R8 would be more than good enough for that use case. If you need to record long form videos for hours at a time then potentially the R6 Mark II may be better. Otherwise go with the R8!
Great Video! I am currently using Eos R! I am thinking of buying a new lens. Would you recommend Rf 85mm f2 or sigma 85mm art f 1.4? Do you know if the canon has fixed the slow AF on 85mm f2 in macro mode to normal mode? Thanks!
Hey Luke! I would personally recommend the RF 85mm F2. The Sigma is fantastic, but very big especially with the adapter. If you don't mind that, then it is a great value lens but I prefer the smaller RF lens. The AF is still quite slow to go from it's minimum focus distance in macro to normal I'm afraid.
Awesome video! Thank you so much! I have a question pertaining to photography. When people refer to “those Canon colours”, are they talking about raw files, or straight out of camera jpegs?
Thank you Wasim! I think it’s both RAW and JPEG but the straight out of camera JPEGS are generally the best representation of Canon colours, only because how RAW file colours are processed is very dependent on what software you use. Lightroom can process Canon RAWs quite a bit differently to Capture One for example.
I have been searching for this exact video! Thank you. I have been looking at the R8 as my first full frame this video helped to organize my research. I've taken notes and doing follow-up, but I think I'm going to get going on this one. Just subscribed as well, I like your calm, well paced delivery.
What a great video for those who are on budget. And I am really looking forward to seeing the EF lenses on RF mount soon, cuz I also don’t have much to spend on RF lenses as I use a Canon RP.
@@JamesReaderyes, please be sure to compare the EF 85 1.8 to the RF 85. As I’m sure you know that EF 85 is easy to find used and it’s pretty inexpensive. Is the RF worth the extra cost?
I have a question right now I’m planning to buy a gimbal for my canon eos r8 so will DJI RS3 Will work perfectly fine with R8?? Is there any connection issue? Will it work with bluetooth??
Canon is unnecessarily too bulky compared to Sony and Fujifilm, even the smallest bodies. I hope they come up with something more compact for everyday carry.
Great content. Subbing. Can’t wait to see the ef vs Rf video. Would be interested in seeing difference between Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 vs the Canon RF. Thanks!
Hi James, always love your review as all very insightful. I am R6 shooter and mainly shoot as event photographer. I now own EF 85mm F1.4 + Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 + RF 50mm F1.8 + Tamron 70 200mm G2 F2.8. I am thinking to trade in my EF 85mm F1.4 + Sigma 35mm F1.4 into one lens, i.e. RF 24 70mm F2.8. Reason: to complement holy trinity as I already own 70 200mm and also I thought that 24 700mm is very versatile lens with fast apperture for low light. Pls note, in Jakarta used RF 24 70mm equals to two lenses I own (EF 85mm + Sigma 35mm).😊 Do you think one RF 24 700mm F.28 is worth trading in with two lenses: EF 85mm + Sigma 35mm? I think I am gonna loose the F1.4 aperture of my two lenses, tough, while will get a versatile focal length 24 70mm but slower aperture. Appreciate your feedbacks soon...!
Thank you! That’s a tough one. I think the 24-70 and 70-200 are perfect lenses for event photography. I suppose I would ask how often you are shooting in low light situations? I’d you are keeping the RF 50mm 1.8 then I suppose that’s a very versatile lens you could use if light conditions are poor. Overall I think the RF 24-70 is an excellent investment.
@@JamesReader Hi James, thanks for the insight. Yes, it is a tough one to loose 2 gorgeous lens into one RF 24-700mm. I mainly shoot at office's event and frequently encounter low light condition, also several times in tight space (a group photoshoot), hence wide angle zoom such as 24-70mm really comes in handy. Not to mention that I don't always have the luxury to zoom in/out by feet, as I am not always near the stage (have limitations to come near stage, if you know what I mean). Alternatively, I may opt third party 24-70mm lens, such as Tamron G2 or Sigma Art, however I may not get the image quality as good as the native lens. Await your views, pls.
I highly recommend the Gamut conversion LUTs. From there, I get my final look through either the Gamut Kinetic LUTs or the Digifilm power grade for a more stylised look! Hope that helps.

If I get the R8 with 24-50mm or R6MKii with 24-100mm SHOULD I keep either of those lenses?? If not I can buy the just body version
instead to save $ and put that towards a lens that you recommended her (probably the 35mm)
But are either of those two kit lenses worth keeping?
Thank you for watching Danny! I haven’t had chance to try out those kit lenses so can’t comment on their quality but they are definitely versatile focal zooms and will have you covered for a bit of everything. I really love the 35mm 1.8, so i would personally go in that direction but I think you’ll happy either way
Thank you James for another amazing video :). Please test the new RF 15-30mm lens in a future how it compares to adapted or native L alternatives.
Thank you Harmónia! I'll definitely try and get my hands on it. Looks like a really interesting focal range.
Or buy a used EF16-35 F4
I read your thoughts all the time 🤠
How’s the RF 24-104 do for action in low (gymnasium) lighting?
Cheers
Thank you so much!!
Very useful n comprehensive vid on best value canon ff cameras & lens. (I’ll save it for Ref ! ). Thks.
Oh nice. Using a R8 and sometimes tehese 2 lenses. Thinking about using it for video. So great video. Popcorn is ready :)
@@JamesReader thank you so much!!!
@@JamesReader thank you so much!!
What do you think about RF 24 to 240mm for R8 as a travel lens? I am hearing mixed review. Wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks
Haven't had chance to try that one yet I'm afraid, hopefully soon!
Your content are always useful for me🤞 Thank you...🥰
Thank you!
Should I choose r8 over R6 (mark I) ??
I'm getting used R6, it's semi pro body but R8 makes sense if unr not a professional and not making money out of this.
Comparison wise i would really like to see the ef135 f2 and the rf135 f1.8. fo head to head.
Nice vid! Love the rf35mm as well. I’ve been using the EOS RP for travel and R5 for everything else.
You think it’s worth upgrading to the R8 from RP?
Thank you! I would only upgrade if the improved video features of the R8 would be something you need.
I’m new in photography , having the R8 which budget lenses should I get , mainly for portrait and landscape purposes?
RF 35mm 1.8 is a great place to start or the 50mm 1.8. Both great lenses and very versatile.
@@JamesReader do I need both? What about the 85mm f2?
Nice video. R8 or R6? which one is a good buy right now?
Otherwise go with the R8!
usually max of 45 mins of recording with a 45 min break in between games
Which lens would you suggest to use with the R7? Looking at the 35mm but unsure with the 1.6x cropped body...
The 35mm is great but my personal favourite on the R7 was the 24mm 1.8 for a standard field of view. Very sharp too
@@JamesReader Great, thank you! Was weighing up 35 Vs 24 so great to have your opinion.
Thank you very much!
Still waiting for your comparison: Ef85mm F1.4 USM vs Rf 85mm f2
Awesome video! Thank you so much! I have a question pertaining to photography. When people refer to “those Canon colours”, are they talking about raw files, or straight out of camera jpegs?
Thank you Wasim! I think it’s both RAW and JPEG but the straight out of camera JPEGS are generally the best representation of Canon colours, only because how RAW file colours are processed is very dependent on what software you use. Lightroom can process Canon RAWs quite a bit differently to Capture One for example.
@@JamesReader Great! Thanks again 😊
Do the custom settings save/work in video mode on the R8? Great video!
Very nice work, I love it ❤
Thank you!
I have been searching for this exact video! Thank you. I have been looking at the R8 as my first full frame this video helped to organize my research. I've taken notes and doing follow-up, but I think I'm going to get going on this one. Just subscribed as well, I like your calm, well paced delivery.
Thank you so much!
Is the Canon ef 100mm 2.8 L lens great for wedding photography?
Absolutely! Great portrait lens. It would also be great for ceremony shots
Fantastic work and constructive recomment
Thank you!
What a great video for those who are on budget. And I am really looking forward to seeing the EF lenses on RF mount soon, cuz I also don’t have much to spend on RF lenses as I use a Canon RP.
Thank you Khai! I really want to test some of the cheaper EF lenses like the 85mm 1.8 and the 35mm F2 so hopefully that will help!
@@JamesReaderyes, please be sure to compare the EF 85 1.8 to the RF 85. As I’m sure you know that EF 85 is easy to find used and it’s pretty inexpensive. Is the RF worth the extra cost?
I would love to see the ef 16-35 f4 vs the rf 14-35 f4. And the ef 24-70 2.8 vs rf 24-70 2.8.
I compared the EF 16-35 F4 to the RF 14-35 in an earlier video, the EF version is great! I'll definitely look to compare the two 24-70s.
That sigma 40mm 1.4 :O
I have a question right now I’m planning to buy a gimbal for my canon eos r8 so will DJI RS3 Will work perfectly fine with R8?? Is there any connection issue? Will it work with bluetooth??
Hey do you recommended the r8 for wedding photography?
In terms of performance, absolutely. It does only have a single card slot though. So it depends how you feel about not having the redundancy.
Canon is unnecessarily too bulky compared to Sony and Fujifilm, even the smallest bodies. I hope they come up with something more compact for everyday carry.
the new 28mm 2.8 aint bad for the price either
Fantastic explanation
Thank you!
The Tamron 15-30 F2.8 would be a good one to see. The original, not the G2.
I’ll definitely check it out! Thanks Mark.
Great video, but also really nice photography
Thank you so much!
While the r8 is great, the r10 is such a beast for travel even if it’s a crop sensor. For the price it’s a little beast.
I haven’t managed to try the R10 yet, I’m sure the camera is great but I’d love to see a few more RFS lenses from a canon.
Can you include the EF 24-70 MM 2.8 in your next video?
The mark I?
@@JamesReader Preferably the mark ii but either. Wanting to see how it sizes up against the 28-70 mm
RF*
@@JacobHussBalt will definitely try the Mark II! I’ve actually being considering swapping my RF for it so I’ll definitely make that comparison
Canon r8 or sony a7m3 which one is better for photography
nice work , keep up with the great work
Thank you!
AF is the reason i didn't buy the old R, and the wheel thing, decided on the r6 ii...
Great choice Stan!
Nice thank u. Exactly what I needed to hear. Ima gonna go for an rp with three lenses maybe 4.
35 , 50, 85 and maybe the 16mm. Subscribed!!
Thank you Felix, that sounds like a great prime lens set up to me!
In the words is DJ Khalid … anotha one! Great job James.
Thank you Esmond! 🙏
Great Info man i was thinking of going R6 Mark 2 but i think that I will go with the R8 now for what I need
Thank You good sir and Subbed!
Thank you for watching! You’ll love the R8!
So rf 35 f1.8 and 50mm f1.8 is the best sir
Both great lenses!
Great content. Subbing. Can’t wait to see the ef vs Rf video. Would be interested in seeing difference between Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 vs the Canon RF. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Will definitely check the Tamron out.
Im looking for a lenses for portrait, couple, Families like and everyday photography. I have a cannon rebel t6
Hi Ashley. Is the rebel a crop sensor camera? A great portrait lens would be the EF 50mm 1.8 or the 35mm f2
I'd love to see the EF 85 1.8 compared to the RF
Definitely planning to see how they compare!
Pls note, in Jakarta used RF 24 70mm equals to two lenses I own (EF 85mm + Sigma 35mm).😊
Do you think one RF 24 700mm F.28 is worth trading in with two lenses: EF 85mm + Sigma 35mm?
Ive been seeing the ef 28-70 2.8l compare that
how do you color grading your footage ? especially clog3 , do you have a lut to sell? I love the video color
I highly recommend the Gamut conversion LUTs. From there, I get my final look through either the Gamut Kinetic LUTs or the Digifilm power grade for a more stylised look! Hope that helps.
@@JamesReader I will check it out, thanks
What was the other lense u recommend
Could you just buy the 24mm 1.8 and then use the r8 crop 1.6 mode and now you'll have 24mm and a 38mm lens close to 35mm with 1.8
Excellent video. You just got a new subscriber.
Thank you Jonathan!
great video thanks !
Thank you!
