  • "A literal reading of the Bible simply is a mistake; I mean it’s just wrong" - Carl Sagan on October 4, 1985, as told to Studs Terkel.
Hear more interview outtakes and learn more about Carl Sagan
    blankonblank.or...
The incomprehensible vastness of the universe, the wonder of our own place in it all… Carl Sagan was able to explain the science of space in a way everyone could understand.
Among his long list of roles and accomplishments, the Cornell professor and NASA advisor is possibly best known for the 13-part television series, Cosmos, which reached millions of people worldwide and sealed his place as celebrity scientist. Maybe he was teased a bit for his tendency to say “billions”, a lot.
But Carl Sagan had this amazing talent for explaining the scientific wonders of the universe without losing the wonder. When he spoke about the science of space, he captured imaginations and held people in thrall.
As part of our special series, The Experimenters -- we’re uncovering interviews with the icons of science, technology, and innovation -- we found this conversation between Studs Terkel and Carl Sagan in the WFMT Studs Terkel Radio Archive. Following “Contact,” the book he wrote with wife Ann Druyan - and the major motion picture that followed it -- Carl Sagan spoke with Studs all about our continuing search for intelligent life out there, including how, for a long time, Hollywood just got it wrong. Here’s the tape.

The best we have to offer is anything that comes in "Billions and Billions" is a Sagan... A Sagan of human beings, brain cells in a human head, stars in the Milky Way, or expletives describing American politics. The world is these days, about a Sagan shy of rational inquiries... and for that we miss Carl more than words can say.

Carl was an atheist, whatever came out of his mouth were lies.
Do you know who the father of all lies is and the deceiver of the whole world? Satan and he uses his evil, demon puppets in lost souls to speak lies. Be careful of who you listen and entertain with.
There’s more that meets the eye than just a college education, science, religion, and all that foolishness.
To look up and see a plane (and not see a pilot) and say the plane is pilotless is ridiculous, and it is just as ridiculous to look into the heavens and say there is no God just because we cannot see him.
Salvation is a gift offered to the world by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, yet people complicate it with religion.
Here is a message for lost souls - Jesus Christ is God, manifest in the flesh and He came on earth to die for our sins. He bore our sins on the cross of Calvary. Have you accepted His free gift of Salvation? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Have you truly BELIEVED from your heart that Jesus Christ is LORD? Have you BELIEVED in the death, burial and resurrection found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KING JAMES Bible? That's how a lost soul can get saved.
Remember that it's NOT what we do that gets us saved, it's what Jesus Christ DID on the cross of Calvary, that's what SAVES a lost soul.
All you have to do to be saved, and on your way to heaven is place your TRUST in the shed Blood of Jesus Christ and nothing else, as sufficient for your salvation, (Romans 3:25 KJB - "Whom God hath set forth to be a PROPITIATION through FAITH IN HIS BLOOD, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;")
(Propitiation means the act of appeasing wrath, Jesus took your place on the cross.)
Will you accept Jesus Christ as your saviour by simple faith, simply trusting in his shed Blood which is sufficient to save your soul from hell?
The last sentence is all you must do to be saved, and that is FAITH, not works, TRUSTING in what someone else did for you is the only thing that is not a work.
Ephesians 2:8-9 KJB - 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
2 Corinthians 5:7 KJB - (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Please get saved NOW before it's too late for your soul!! There's 1 Eternity to choose from, Heaven or Hell, choose wisely for your souls!!
Grace and Peace to all in Christ Jesus!!

@@1Corinthians15_1-4 Sagan often tells nonsense, as an atheist he has to, but in this short film it appears that he has not read anything from the Bible about this.
Genesis 1 to 5 tells exactly what happened. only the human-made stories are wrong and Sagan talks about that in this film.

Sagan was such a wise man. He knew full well of the futility of discussing extraterrestrial life.
We can talk all day long about the vastness of the universe and the potential billions, trillions and quintillions of life-supporting planets out there, but ultimately, we cannot say as a fact that life does exist out there. We simply don't know either way.

Mr. Sagan's books changed my early life. I miss his voice and writing deeply. I just wish he'd have lived to a great old age - he'd have been a great humanist advocate in this age of scientific strife and controversy. Well I guess he still is since us humans know how to preserve information, as per this video. Also, how backwards does it sound today when the interviewer calls our world "the ghetto" in reference to Sagan's assertion that alien life would be vastly more intelligent than us humans? To me it sounds pretty awful in 2016, and I was at least glad that Sagan didn't go on to use that same language.

    • @drmike9
      @drmike9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

The word "ghetto" is not used in the same context that you are thinking, I suspect.
It is used as a term to describe a neglected or disadvantaged area (neighborhood) of the Galaxy (Jewish slums of Nazi occupation).
It is not used as a word where rich white girls use it to describe almost everything that's not clad with lilly polos and pearls. It's also not used as a black culture reference, such as wearing house slippers out in public while shopping.
Regardless, Carl Sagan was a savage baller, shot caller.

just a quick note him saying that Islam thinks the world is 6000 years old is incorrect because according to many scholars and from what I've researched, Islam never states how old the world is but rather only how long ago the prophet Mohamed lived.

It’s incredibly arrogant - and incredibly short-sighted of us - to believe with 100% certainty that we are the only intelligent forms of life in the vast, endless cosmos. For that matter, it’s just as arrogant to consider ourselves to be intelligent at all, when history has proven to us, time and time again, that we are actually anything but.
I’m not referring to intelligence in scientific or technological advances that benefit humankind, there has definitely been bright, shining moments of that (and if Carl were still here, I think he’d acknowledge that) ... but it seems like every time we figure out a way to improve (or even save) lives, those moments are always accompanied by a rabid, closed-minded, selfish paranoia that breeds brand new ways to exploit others, destroy ourselves and each other, and accept our own stupidity with a sense of pride. Carl was unique, not only with his intellect, his open mind, and his forward-thinking approach to life, but also one of the very few who looked at the cosmos as a source of excitement, hope, and anticipation for great things... and not visualizing it as a threatening unknown abstract, or an apocalyptic earth-ending entity, or as a “place” to conquer, with human selfishness and power-hungry greed.
    RIP Good Sir.
I hope there’s “another side”, a dimension that has confirmed your hopes, and that you are now there, and in the company of other “what if?” thinkers.
