I'm getting ready to meet up with a Producer once he finds a sponsor to do a screenplay from my first and only book I've written. Having this background from your Part 1 & 2 has generated a certain edge in understanding and speaking on the terms of the contract. Thank you, Jeff! That was very insightful and has given me quite a confidence lift.
Love listening to this guy speak. He’s realistic and doesn’t pull punches. Main thing I get out of this is why Hollywood has given us nothing but 20 years of superhero movies and not much else. Thank god for the streamers that at least give us variety.
I started working on my first movie after doing several concepts and Ideas but honestly, i have no idea how to start but knowing these obstacles are there. I love this channel, i have learned so much. I have an offer to write a project for netflix but i dont want to to work for that souless company.
Yo , just a question I would like to hear what you all think. What about renting your film out to a media channel/company for a 12 months for an annual fee? Is that crazy ?
“Know thy enemy.” Bloodsucking executives are the enemy, and so Mr. Deverett here is a priceless mentor in our fight to be treated fairly (and even legally!) as working artists for once. Bravo, I say :)
Q:"So how do you get to pitch an idea to Netflix?" A:"You can't, you need to go in with a company who's worked with them before." Q:"So how do you get to pitch an idea to Netflix?" @@royaltypoetry1533 Well not necessarily, see they're passionate about what they do otherwise if they wasn't they want be doing it but if you don't have the money they want help you. You write screenplays I'm sure you do because this channel is for people like us but let's say you're a screenwriter and film producer and need a entertainment lawyer you think that lawyer will give you legal advice for free? No and if they do they will tell you just how they told me. "Ma'am, you want me to give you legal advice for free. I tell you what I'll give you some legal advice. Now I charge $5,000 if you can't pay that then don't ask for free legal advice from a lawyer goodbye." If you're rich you don't need God, but if you're poor then you need him. I'm poor so I know I need him.
@@starbright6579 you can't use lawyers and artists in the same thing. In music, movies, shows, plays or video games. You need to be passionate about it For example CALL OF DUTY. When COD was passionate about their game. It was fun, the fan base wasn't divided, and they didnt make half a** work. Now they became about money and look at COD NOW Fast and Furious used to be great when they cared about it and wasn't money hungry. You can't not compare law with art work. When you creating something you can tell when its about money because they just throw things together and thats it. That's what he's saying. Distributors don't watch the movies, don't hardly market it, or don't believe in it. In order for movies to work and come out great everyone needs to be on board. Just like Netflix they don't market they're shows and use all that money to make it but don't promote it, or market it right and 99% of Netflix shows don't make it pass season 1
Art like movies and stuff takes teamwork. That what he also said. To make a great movie, takes story, cast, great production, great market, and distributor. Guess what it doesn't matter if your screenplay A1 or cast if nobody doesn't know it existed then what's the point. It's called balance u need to be passionate about understand is it great money wise but they just throwing passionate out the window. In business you not suppose to get behind anything you don't believe in anyway. Now you can compare the business with lawyers because lawyers won't take your case if they don't believe it'll win and if that lawyer passionate about your case 9 out of 10 that lawyers will see to it you'll win That's how movies should be.
This is only true if you care more about profitability than quality If my priorities are the complete opposite, my focus will be more on crafting a timeless work rather than juicing every last penny out of audiences Of course, the real fun comes when a high-quality film also makes boatloads of money (Joker etc.). But executives are allergic to artistic risk by nature, so they will never be able to spearhead that sort of massive change
..."you don't just sit there with your thumb up your butt.. waiting for an answer..." Lol Now im glad i watched your interview with J. Horton before i invested my time with this one.. interesting how so much emphasis is placed on the business aspects of things...!
On the 750k to make a decent movie, he is wrong. You can make a great movie for around 200 to 300K. You may not get a big name actor but you can make a great film for a low cost.
Love most of his advice (and really like him personally) but no legit agent or manager will ever ask for a retainer. EVER. It's even against Guild rules.
Movie distributors sound like the dregs of humanity. This is a business that sounds ripe for disruption by independent thinking, tech innovation, and filmmaker organizing.
I dunno, I think it’s extremely exciting to hear an honest, compassionate, and exhaustive overview of the entire Hollywood “business” for once 🤷♂️ The analogy I use is flipping a cockroach over to watch its legs wiggle. Now take a wild guess as to how I think of most executives ;)
I like this guy, he's a very motivating speaker... Tks for the class... I'm making 3 movies 🎬 🎞 🎥 before I die... 3 of the greatest stories/movies ever told..TOLD... "Coming Soon To A Theater Near You" ....Jessenashvillejames 👍
Woo, go Jeff! The Realist producer I've ever heard. Always love hearing from this guy :)

What this video taught me was more of the business side of the movie industry but Jeff is always full of knowledge 🙂

Excellent Description of a realistic process.

Just write it. A lot of people would love to be in your position. Take the chance and see where it takes you
Glad I started watching these again.

My goal is to get a manager this season

You gotta be able to connect with people, and people are attached to their money.
Face it. People do a job for the money, especially film distributors. If you ain't talking money, you ain't talking about nothing.
this why things come out crap

Yeah he is very down to us :'))) and well..he just too funny to me though
Just follow the $$$!
