    Your living the dream in that back yard 👍
    Thanks for going over the gear. I just subbed , so I will go back and enjoy the videos of the CDT. I was working with a guy recently who had a tattoo on his calf , with the initials of doing all 3 trails. AT , PCT , CDT. He left work onto another hike to somewhere. That's living the dream if your a hiker. Unfortunately , I had a bad injury that doesn't allow me to do long treks , but I can still go camping and enjoy the outdoors with limitations.
    Peace

    After two completed thru-hikes, you've got your gear down to an art form! Wow you got your moneys worth out of that cook pot! Those trail runners are awesome! Cutting the sleeping pad down sounds good. That pack looks small to be that warm - nice job and love that you make some of your gear.
    The down jacket and rain gear combos were very interesting.
    Worms are good luck! Thanks for posting all this helpful info and be safe out there. You got this!

    Hey Joe. I'm really excited to see that you're making some CDT thru-hike videos. TH-cam is in DIRE need of some good ones. When is your start date?
    Also, I have a life proof on my iPhone 6, and I'm pretty happy with it. I put it on in January, and it hasn't come off yet. The waterproof ability has held up well, and the camera/video quality is the same with the case on or off. I don't drop my phone often, but I feel much better with the case on whenever it does take some spills.
    I've checked out all of your shirts and will be wearing one on my 2016 Appalachian trail thru-hike. Thanks man!

I'd be worried you'd lose the adapter and not be able to charge. One USB for your lamp and one iPhone cable for your iPhone. Maybe bring the adapter just in case your phone cable is lost or damaged.

      Its Rezz Unfortunately I've never owned or tried one so I really have no idea. I've heard of people that are quite fond of them for the security they provide. One thing that I do know is that acceptance/legality of the Ursacks in certain parks/locations is always hard to pin down and get any straight answers so just make sure you know the rules wherever you're headed.

      Oh yeah, I use a windscreen almost every night. I just use a folded up piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and wrap it loosely around the stove. You want to make sure that you don't trap too much heat around the canister though.

    Joe,
    I wanted to pass on the GPS info regarding the CDT I gathered. It's not much, but it may be helpful if the question arises.
    For me the best solution is to get the Bear Creek paper maps to use with my GPS. Because I lack the tech skills to load background maps and POI's onto my GPS, this fall (when the latest updates from Bear Creek are available) I will send the GPS to Bear Creek. For a fee he will set it up with POI's and everything I will need. This is a service he offers on his website.
    Below is one of Bear Creeks explanation of paper map and GPS options.
    "The GPS waypoint database appears on my maps and not in the Ley maps. The Ley maps have the trail line hand drawn on them, and because of changes they are less accurate, but they should work fine for the most part. (My maps have a precise track line for the trail.)"
    Bear Creek
    Anyway, I just thought this info might help if you ever got a question about this sort of thing.

    Did you find you really liked having the umbrella on the CDT? Also, did you also end up switching out your OR Helium II? Sorry for all the questions. But also, did you find the Anker to be adequate enough back-up for your phone? Would you have considered taking solar panel?

  • @kookiemoose
    @kookiemoose 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Joe. I've got question about GPS. So I have the Ley paper map set. I also have a Garmin eTrex30x. In Yogi's book she says they used a similar GPS and downloaded the Bear Creek maps from Starmans website onto the GPS. She said they carried the Bear Creek paper maps, along with the Bear Creek maps downloaded on their GPS. She said that way they always knew where they were.
    My question: is this possible using the Ley maps? To see the Ley map route on the GPS and to match it to the Ley paper maps?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't say for sure, as I'm not terribly familiar with GPS units these days, but I would think that this would be possible. The Ley maps are based on USGS quads as far as I know, so even if you can't get his maps specifically onto the unit, USGS quads should work in combination with trail line data. Really, the Bear Creek data could be used with the Ley maps, but there will be alternate routes and other small deviations that don't show up on Bear Creek from time to time. Wish I had better info for you here, but I haven't looked into the GPS world in quite some time now.

    I am new to backpacking, just saw your post on reddit, and think this awesome what you are doing. How heavy is your pack when you load up on food and water? Also, how many days of food do you typically carry?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I normally carry around 5 days of food and I'd say it amounts to about 22 -25 lbs with full food and water. Thanks.

    • @austindory7788
      @austindory7788 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Brewer From the hikers that you've known and traveled with is 5 days of supplies from a resupply point considered pretty average for everyone? I was looking at doing a couple stretches that would require a about a 10 day supply and just wondering if something like that might tend to cause a person problems. (I haven't chosen a pack or pack size yet).

    Maybe you have mentioned it somewhere. I was wondering how much memory your phone has in order to put together your videos? How did you handle uploading the vids to you tube? Did you have to move pics/videos off your phone to a computer/device to make more room? Thanks for the nice videos... Congrats on the triple crown!

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris L Space Thanks. Memory was always an issue for me, no matter what the storage on my phone was. Ultimately, the 128 gb, though nice, still didn't have enough room for my pictures and videos. I made room by editing a movie (In iMovie), uploading through the youtube app, and deleted all related videos and files to free up space. I could only ever keep 1 or 2 of my most recent edited videos on the phone. Check my post here for a little more info: backcountrybanter.com/2014/11/20/how-i-shoot-video-on-trail/

    Did you have trouble finding canisters along the way for the stove? My first inclination was to take an alcohol stove, but I read recently that this may not be a good idea on the CDT because of burn bans.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Clay Luther Not really. Northern New Mexico was sparse on fuel, but if you planned right, you could definitely make it. Most people used canisters stoves and that's what I'd do again.

    @kookiemoose 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Joe
    I was really hoping to post vids to my TH-cam channel if I hike the CDT next year. I see you used an iPhone. So I figured why not right. The thing is unlike your iPhone mine will not have a cell carrier once I hit trail. I just can't work it into my budget, and not having cell service is not a big deal to me. Data would be nice, but it's just not in my budget either.
    But I have an iPhone. It's 6 plus with 128gb storage.
    My question is: if I was to shoot at 720p would I be able to store the video I shoot along the way until I find wifi in towns to upload? I mean is it even possible to find many wifi spots along the way to use? Do any come to mind? Since I have so much storage would it be possible that I could hold every pic I take, and every clip I shoot the entire way? I mean in your experience, based on the amount of data you generated during your hike?
    Maybe there's a way, a device, to offload data from my iPhone until after I'm finished? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say you'll be fine without signal. I always waited for wifi anyways to avoid charges. My best wifi advice is to find a place you can leave your phone to upload (possibly overnight.) I'd edit videos during the town day and upload them on wifi overnight. Also libraries tend to have the fastest wifi. I too have a 128 Gb iPhone and in my experience: you can hold all of the pictures you take along the way, but definitely not the video. You'll probably have enough room to hold 3 sections. Remember, you'll need enough room to export your edited videos onto the phone too. There are ways to offload data, but they aren't great/efficient unfortunately, I ended up deleting all of my old footage. There may be some new ways to offload video though, so look into that. I would recommend shooting in 1080p if you can. 720 may save space, but it is already somewhat outdated by youtube standards. Plus you can always shoot in 1080 and downscale it in editing output if you really want. Oh and wifi is fairly common in almost every town, but man can it be slow. There are a few small towns (especially in MT) that don't have wifi.

    What do you do when you run into bugs? Suffer through it? Maybe they don't get that bad down there but up here in Ontario I wouldn't last long without some bug repellent at the very least for a couple months there.

      @BackcountryBanter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Haney I've actually got a mosquito head net and 3 oz bug net for my tarp that I'll have mailed to me once mosquitos get bad. I didn't think to include them in the video but they are essential in peak mosquito/fly season.
