    My why is to end the silent to do list. My mind feels so stuffed with things i should do, unfinished projects, messy spots that need to be cleaned, plus the things i actually want to spend my time on. Ending the silent to do list will allow me to focus my attention on what matters most to me. Thanks for this video to remind me (and everyone else to) of their goals! ❤

    My why is definitely inline with being disillusioned with capitalism, and wanting to reduce my contribution to environmental degradation due to overconsumption. I agree with other commenters too, my mental health will improve if I'm not distracting myself with frivolous purchases. I'll be able to keep my apartment cleaner when I'm not cluttering it up with random purchases that I don't know where to store. I appreciate your content so much to keep me in track and reflecting on my "whys". ❤

    You are making sense, don’t worry! This was motivating - it felt like a solid talk with a friend. I’m doing a low buy year - my goal is to limit myself to one “frivolous” purchase per month. I keep a list of “wants” on my phone and add to it whenever I think of something I wish I could buy. Then I just let it sit there. Some times I go through and delete things I realize I no longer want. It’s amazing how your wants can fade or change if you just give them time. Anything that stays on the list for a long time is going to either become one of my twelve purchases, or go on a birthday or Christmas list!

      i use a similar system with bookmarks on my pc/phone browser :) i started keeping a running wishlist before my low-buy and the amount of things i'd totally forgotten about after just a week or two is astounding! so many things i thought i needed at some point, i don't even think about anymore. helps SO much with reducing frivolous spending--or at least indulging in things we value more than fleeting impulses

    My why is I got tired and overwhelmed of owning too many things, including groceries. I also learned what I do actually like so I won't keep buying food I won't eat. Also I'm working on panning my makeup and skincare products. Doing crafts with the things I have made me realize I have enough to have fun.

    As an adult with my own home, I will say if it helps others that sometimes there are things that happen and it requires a purchase to fix. My husband sometimes has night sweats. It’s not often, but when it happens he sweats through sheets and sometimes into the mattress. I had to spend $140 for a mattress topper this weekend to solve that and prevent damage to our mattress(they’re more expensive to replace!) . I hesitated because I didn’t want to spend this money, but it was necessary in the long run to avoid needing a new mattress

    I am enjoying this "no buy" year -- although I am spending more than ever! The thing is, I am buying what is important to me, what I've saved a long time for. I bought my first house -- I'm in my 70s -- and now that I've been in it for 6 months I know what I want. I have lived in tiny places for the last 25 years and I love to entertain. It's like when you'll fulfill your dream of moving to New Zealand. I am fulfilling my dream of having a place where friends can stay and where I can entertain my local friends. I feel so free because I'm NOT buying random, spur-of-the-moment things that I bought in the past -- and sometimes have gotten rid of without ever even using. I am focusing on just what you said in this video -- spending on ONLY what will truly bring me joy. Thank you for all your encouragement!

    I definitely believe in the idea that when you get rid of the things you don't need, you make space for the things you /do/ want. For example, not mindlessly spending on stuff you don't need, now you have extra space in your budget for peace of mind (ie emergency savings) and/or for your hobbies. Another example, decluttering junk you own, now gives you the opportunity to appreciate more what you do have and love.

  • @dptfo
    @dptfo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

    My why is because I’ve worked really hard to declutter and simplify. I have two little kids, and we have everything we need.
    We have two vehicle payments that are kind of a hardship for us right now, so if I overspend or I buy unnecessary things, it makes things difficult for us. I’m trying to build my credit, and it’s actually really good now, so I don’t want to jeopardize it.

    I've been doing pretty good on my low buy which was somewhat expected because I naturally am not much of a shopper, but I was surprised by how many food treats I was prone to getting myself. a little coffee here and there (sometimes a sweet expensive coffee actually) and a pastry adds up a lot! doing low buy has really made me stop and think about my purchases, and I find it more gratifying when I do buy because it's something I really enjoy hehe

    As someone who used to be a bit addicted to shopping when I was a teen, I promise the intense dopamine cravings for shopping do go away eventually!! I did a year of no buying clothes a while ago, and for a few months I would get really really strong urges to go to the mall when I was bored or lonely. I was miserable at first waiting it out, but it did eventually go away a few months in and now I hate the mall lol. Still not immune to the pull of shopping (I'm trying to put off buying Animal Crossing for my switch atm), and I know it's different for everyone, but I promise it does get easier!! 💚

    My why is similar to yours-- we're planning to purchase a home in the next 2-3 years, and I simply don't want to fritter away down payment money on stuff that I ultimately don't want to move (home furnishings, craft supplies, books, etc). If it's not precious or useful enough to move across town 2-3 years from now, I'm not buying it.

    I had a really hard time this month. I am going through a low energy/motivation phase I think because I’ve been stuck in winter for several months now. About a week ago I was feeling really guilty about this and started feeling like if I just bought the right planner, the right workout plan, whatever, it would fix it and I’d feel better about myself. I managed to talk myself out of it and realized that wasn’t true and throwing money at something new wasn’t going to fix anything. Also, low energy makes me not want to prepare food at home and I ordered out a lot more than I wanted to. This actually ended up physically hurting me when I had fast food several days in a row and ended up with a day-long stomach ache. I’m still committed though, and I’m almost halfway there (my challenge is only going to the end of May not the whole year). We can do this!
    Also knowing the reasons why I am struggling helps me not feel as guilty about the struggle. It’s totally human the way I reacted, but I’m committed to doing better.

    Congratulations on reaching the end of the 2nd month in the no-buy year. Hearing you talk today made me wish I had made a commitment to join in. When I was young I had two mortgages and lots of financial commitments including private school fees for two teenage daughters. My why was to become debt free to get rid of the stress in our lives. Two strategies kept me on the straight and narrow besides my why. The first was recording every cent we spent and the second was recording and noticing how much our debt was reducing at the end of each month. The great thing about either saving or reducing debt is that each month that you remain committed the bigger the results each month (unless there is some crisis which requires you to spend more money on necessities but that only happens occasionally). I'm looking forward to hearing you talk about consumerism and I wish you and your followers every success.

I got three months free and I didn't finish the books (not even one) that I downloaded and wanted to read while they were free so I thought to continue my subscription to be able to read them. You've made me realise that the reason why I didn't read them is because they're not that interesting and I already have a million books at home that I haven't read so I don't really need to pay 10 bucks to Amazon for something I'm not even enjoying. I don't really have a huge why completely figured out but I kinda have an idea brewing... but my current why is to stop buying stuff I don't need and to save money. I'm not a minimalist I'm not trying to have nothing. but I just don't want to have things that I don't need. I want only own things that will use in my life or need for some reason not just to have because its "cool" or something like that!

I think the hardest thing is that I had a baby 10 months ago and my pre pregnancy pants don’t fit but neither do my pants I bought right after birth, but leggings and cycling shorts will get me through 😂. I really just don’t want to buy/don’t truly need any more clothes. And I’m doing consignment only for my baby’s wardrobe because she obviously needs clothes as she grows. But I’m really trying to stick to consigning clothes she’s grown out of and using just that money for the next clothes!

    Month two and I feel like Im doing well. Staying out of my overdraft and having money left over by payday is a huge thing that hasn’t happened in years. Amazing.
    Im definitely feel the scarcity urge to buy. Like if I have a skincare product that works so well so me, my brain gets scared that it will be discontinued and I have to stop up. So controlling and bad!
    I also always used to buy things that I would think would make part of my life better. Once the parcel arrived, I’d already be fixating on the next item. My Low Buy and My Declutter have been so good for me, even if it’s been challenging at times. So grateful. Thank you Grace! 💜

    Ugh I love your vids. Talking through these issues and analyzing why we over consume is so helpful. My issue is clothing. Everytime I see something I like , i feel like I NEED TO HAVE IT. I already have enough clothing that I struggle to maintain and I don’t need more. My why is that I plan on moving cross country next year and I don’t want to bring much with me as I plan on car camping to reach my (undetermined lol) destination.

    I am doing quite well, didn't break my no buy rules yet am proud at myself but not really happy and have a bit of a problem. My mind goes obsessively over everything I am going to buy when the one year is up. I couldn't help myself and even curated a list of all the things I am going to buy... Know it is not healthy but these are like the darker moments of my addiction. I hope I lose or burn the list before next January comes around 😅

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      progress over perfection! the urges aren't going to go away overnight! having a list to fixate on is better than purchasing a bunch of new things. and like you said, by the end of the year, you might have the power to burn the list!

    When I was standing in line at tjmaxx, I was watching the 3 people in front of me check out, one spend $416, one spent $200something, and the one in front of me spent $160. So it made me feel better about my $40 spent. I’m not as bad as the rest of them. But I was still treating myself, and the things I bought were upgrades but not really necessary

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      I think it's important not to use the words "bad" or "good" in terms of purchasing because it's not helpful to assign morality to morally neutral tasks (learned this from KC Davis' book How to Keep House While Drowning). purchasing things basically falls under a morally neutral task because we need to buy certain things for survival, but when overconsumption comes in and makes us think we have to buy more than we need, it just becomes a task that can cause damage to us. we also don't know what other people's experiences are and can never know the reason why people are buying certain amounts of things. comparison will get us nowhere with a challenge, which is why I'm just sharing my experiences, thoughts, + reflections and urging all of you to customize your "rules" to your own life + goals. just some things to think about!

      I was literally going to comment that my friends took me to TJmaxx for the first time and i ended up buying a pair of jeans and flowy pants hahaha first clothing purchases of the year!! I really could use good fitting clothing though, especially pants, because lots don't fit me anymore. And this will give me more reason and motivation to get rid of a couple things so these better fitting pieces will replace them, staying positive!! :)

    It’s so interesting to see that other countries have such a thing as marketing psychologists. My why is that I have so many things that could be used up before I buy more, I want to be more aware of my impact on the environment. Like, who even needs 12 bottles of body wash?? That’s how many I have! Why??! Because it was cheap? Because it smelled good? It doesn’t make sense to have so much, when I only use 1 at a time. So my goal is to use up all my excess items until I have 1 of each. Then afterwards I want to switch to sustainable options going forward. My no buy list is made up of all the things I have enough of. Chapstick, clothes, shoes, lotion, etc.

    Good chat! Capitalism and consumerism are not the same thing. Capitalism is a means to having access to kinds of goods and services and giving everyone a chance to create a company that produces something for your life. Consumerism is the voracious devouring of those goods. The goods are not going to be produced in vast numbers unless they are being consumed in vast numbers. Taking control is the key. I love what you are doing here. We need to learn to be wiser than the marketers. That is a skill we can learn.

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      thank you for the distinction!! I think I was mostly meaning "capitalism" in the way of it been slightly negatively connoted on the internet recently. besides the definition you gave, when I say capitalism, it just includes the fact that our capitalistic society is greedy and therefore continues to grow unchecked and therefore fuel consumerism in ways never before seen (ads, marketing, etc)

    So question - this month I have brought items that I've been sitting on for a few months now and my life is better with them 100%. But not all of them are essential, I mean I got on fine (sort of) before them 😂 - so are they red or green list I can't decide. Part of me feels guilty for the 'set back' but part of me is like well what's the alternative- you need them enjoy the slow dopamine idiot 😅

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      you don't necessarily have to get too caught up on whether they were red or green list items, but just continue to move on with your lists and maybe make them more specific if that's helpful for you?

    I slipped up yesterday. Pinterest got me.I found the exact type of dresses I was looking for in a sample sale from a sustainable brand at a price that was in my budget. I have been casually looking for literal years. I jumped before I could even question it. Completely forgot my Low Buy year rules. I haven't seen anything thrifting because I've been good at looking. Honestly I'm wondering if it was really slipping up or not since it was something I've been looking for and they were on my yes list but I didn't wait and think on it like I had told myself I would.

    I'm struggling right now because I found some vintage chairs that are way cheaper than new chairs and actually comfortable! I have almost no living room furniture right now and I know I won't find comfy chairs at that price for a while... but is it worth breaking my no buy!?

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      just remember your why!! if you've found yourself saying "ugh my living room has been less functional without chairs" then maybe it would be okay! but if you've fared this long without them and your goal is to save money... idk! just think about why you're doing the challenge. the whole point of it is to give us pause when thinking about a purchase and really consider it. are you just saying this now because they're a good price or are they your perfect idea dream chairs and a good price?

    Coming on to make a confession... I freaked out and broke the 'replacement only' no-buy. my eyeshadow primer was discontinued, and I bought a few different ones to try out - all of them cool for different purposes, so I am confident I will use them. But. while out there I also bought some eyeshadow... all in olive green, a colour that looks fab on me... plus olive eyeliner and Mascara.
    Not going to lie, life has been stressful, I've been using this as a vent for stress. didn't apend too much, still less than mindless shopping, so I'll book it as learning. But a bit disappointed in myself still.
    Has anyone found stress to be a trigger for them and is one step ahead of me in the learning journey? Grateful for any tipps!

    • @kat5000
      @kat5000 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      coming back after finishing the video: it wasn't so much the dopamine hit at buying for me.
      it was more the hyperfocus on finding eyeshadow primers, comparing prices across different stores etc that took my mind off the other shit that's going on in my life, and I do get dopamine out of wearing olive eye makeup.
      I also took this as a starter to re-arrange my eyeshadow storage, repress broken ones, re-do my custom palettes. and think about which palettes, that now all include my fave colour, I can leave at my desk in the office or my locker at the gym or at my boyfriend's place.
