  • Those of us with non touring Harley Davidson’s that have small luggage racks, such as the Dyna or Softail or Breakout range now have a cheap and simple Strapless Luggage option.
The Do It Yourself ‘Mick Rack’ system is a cheap and easy to make solution to the age old problem of securing luggage to small luggage racks.
    Supplies
    From Bunnings (Larger Hardware stores)
    1 by 600mm x 300mm x 0.95mm Sheet of Galvabond Steel ($23.50)
    www.bunnings.c...
    1 by Moroday 500mm x 400mm x 12mm Adhesive Rubber Mat ($18.90)
    www.bunnings.c...
    2 x Hand Nut with M8 x 45mm Bolt set ($4.12 x 2)
    www.bunnings.c...
    Auto Supplier or Clark Rubber
1 Metre x Plastic ‘U’ shaped ‘Pinchweld’ auto trim (or you can just use thick tape)
    www.clarkrubbe...
    Instructions
Measure the inside base of your bag and cut a square of sheet metal approx. 30mm (1 inch) smaller
Note for the rack depicted in the video the size was 225mm x 185 mm
Measure the underneath of your rack and cut a square as large as will fit under the rack
Note for the rack depicted in the video the size was 160mm x 160 mm
Mark and drill your holes the appropriate distance apart (measure between your bars. Mine were 75mm apart but check your rack) and to the middle of the top rack, then place the top plate and hold the lower plate under so it covers the middle bars and the rear of the rack. Mark where the holes go through the top plate and then drill the bottom plate.
Place the bolts through the top plate and either epoxy glue or weld them in position.
Place the top plate in the bag and mark where the holes need to go, Drill or punch them through. You can add self adhesive Velcro (hook and loop) to the underside of the top plate and rear of the bag to stop it moving about. Prior to inserting the top place cut and add the car trim around the edge.
Stick the foam rubber to the bottom plate with the adhesive and trim to suit.
Now you should be good to go.
Your ‘Mick Rack’ is complete. No more frustrating 20-minute battles to secure your luggage.
