  • The Flow Hive makes harvesting honey look like a piece of cake, but when you're actually out with a hive that is 60,000 bees in population, things go wrong.
Here's my video on how I harvest from the flow hive and ways you can make things easier.
First, buy extra parts! Things things are clear! Its so hard to find a clear piece of plastic on the ground. Have extra just in case.

Second, use a tube. 1-3/8" tube fits over the flow hive tube and will allow you to harvest from multiple frames at the same time. Drill a hold in a bucket lid so bees can't drown in the honey.

If you would rather harvest in jars instead, do it 1 frame at a time over the course of weeks instead of all at once. Hunching over, holding a jar while honey pours out way too fast and then dribbles out painfully slow gets annoying after awhile. Bees start to dive into the honey and your back gets tired. I strongly recommend pouring the honey into jars in your house where you can sit down at a table.
Check out the video for a few more tips.
Of course, if you have a small hive and live in a place that's warm year round, you might not have as many problems harvesting. BUT if you have 2 brood boxes and a full size hive and maybe even multiple supers, this video is for you. Here at our farm, the Mesquite is going off and the bees are going crazy!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I love it when my bees are full and busy and happy. But it makes for a trickier harvest even with the flow hive.

The sheet metal strips in the ground ist not inside so your bees can come out. In the top is also a honey super ?

The metal strip is falling off the bottom of the box. It should be under the box, but equipment falls apart fast here in Hawaii since it's outside all year round and the sun is brutal. Yes, I do have honey supers above the Flow Hive box. When the mesquite tree blooms, the bees fill the beehive up so fast I have to have more than 1 super on the hive. For us here, the flow hive isn't ideal because we harvest a lot of honey from each hive. It's much faster to take the supers off and harvest all at once.

ephari what winter time troubles do you have? Winter is usually pretty calm here. The bees still gather a little honey but not much.
