- The Roland JV-1080 was released in 1993. The Roland Integra-7 is Roland's current synth module and is therefore about 25 years more recent. Just how far has synth technology and sounds evolved in quarter of a decade? Well, in this video we'll find out!
We'll discuss the specifications and features, then I'll play you many of the preset patches and sounds on both synthesizers in a variety of categories and styles, pianos, bass, pads, strings, drums and mre!

I think the lesson here is: we haven’t come very far in 20 years. We’re still using the same sounds, just more of them with added effects.

I own a JV-1080 I bought in 1995, and an Integra-7 I bought in 2014. With the exception of the super-natural sounds, they are (sound wise) practically identical. This was deliberate. Everything that the JV-1080 did, so did the Integra-7. The PCM sounds comprised the same patches in the same order. The idea was that you replaced the JV-1080 in your 19" rack with an Integra-7, and still essentially had a JV-1080 at your fingertips if you needed it (without having to dust off the old JV-1080 and plug it back in). To compare a JV-1080 and an Integra-7 based on sounds only is unfair given that the Integra-7 has practically the same PCM sound engine built into it. The attraction of the Integra-7 was USB connectivity (no more MIDI cable that kept packing in), larger display, a built in DSP effects engine, balanced audio outputs on the back (ideal for connecting to a desk), blue-tooth connection to an i-pad to make controlling the Integra-7 easier, and a built in ADC/DAC (for audio recording and playback) that had an insanely good signal-to-noise ratio at the time the Integra-7 was released. This, and a VST plugin to control the Integra-7, made it compatible with most DAW's (I use mine with Cubase). Not as easy (but certainly possible) to use a JV-1080 with a modern DAW, but try using a JV-1080 for playback with a music composing/arranging software tool like Finale or Sibelius and you were up the proverbial creek. Theoretically possible, but an awful lot of work to get the JV-1080 playing. Dealing with instruments that you then had to correlate to patch and bank numbers in the user manual, and then type these numbers into your DAW or other software tool was not for the faint hearted. Thus, the Integra-7 (with the exception of the super-natural sounds) wasn't so much a new synth module, as a JV1080 that was compatible with the modern computer.

Its way more than a jv-1080 with USB. Integra also has the greatest hits from the XV series and the entire library of SRX cards (which included the vast majority of the rom from the cards from the jv series). Not to mention how much is in just the supernatural library. probably some stuff im forgetting too.

Great video, one thing to perhaps bear in mind though is that by design, the integra-7 role was mainly to consolidate all the existing Roland history of romplers, not to create a really new synth. When you buy an integra, you buy the entire ROLAND lib of sounds + ALL the extensions cards ;-)
My JV-2080 with eight cards stuffed into it still does every thing I need from a module.

JV-1080 is my all time favourite. Went through JV-2080, JV-1010, XV-5080, XV-2020, XP-30... but 1080 is the winner for me! and every time I hear: This module is from 1994, I just think Yeah 1994... just like me :))
Never seems to get commented on in reviews, but one of the things that seems to have taken a backward step is boot up time. 20 years progress right there - 1080 in 1 second, Integra 20 seconds. I dumped Korg Kronos because I realised I didn't always want to switch on and then boil the kettle while I waited for it to boot up.
integra is faster if you disable the auto-load of srx cards into the virtual slots, but the old synths were amazing. same trend in computer unfortunately, my atari was quicker than this pc!
Sign of the times, to some extent.... Of course older synths booted almost immediately, they hadn't "got much to do" ! ;-) But as you get more modern, they start taking longer because (by and large) they have more memory and more to load up !!
That is a bit of a sweeping generalisation though and there are exceptions : Comparing the Kronos, the Roland V-Synth GT takes about a couple of minutes to boot - BUT the (more modern) Jupiter-80 only takes about 14 seconds !
But would I "dump" the V-Synth because of its boot-up time...??!!!? No, of course not.
Boot times - or rather RE-boot times - are only really relevant if you suffer a power failure during a live gig. But even then, there's loads of *other* gear that will need re-booting/re-setting once the power is restored again - and in such circumstances, most audiences would be pretty understanding/forgiving anyway. :-) However, if you're working in a studio environment, I don't have a problem with going to make a coffee when you've switched everything on ! :-)
I know the Kronos takes an age to boot but.... You "dumped it" just because of that ??!! Seriously ?? :-o
Noooo, not just because of that. I also struggled with the clarity of the text on the front panel tbh. Small text and white that wasn't quite white.
Plus I live in a slightly different world too - it was never an on the road keyboard, only used at home. Quite often in a busy life I just get 10 mins to jump in front of the keyboard and I too regularly didn't bother because of the start up time. I'm just impatient i guess!
My laptop boots in seconds - I can have a midi controller keyboard, as many vst's as I want and an audio interface all up and running in quarter of the time of the Kronos. Not for everyone, but works for me. :)
@Andy Gordon - that's interesting. I hear you about the "10 minutes" thing.
I have the opposite experience - my Juno DS takes about 4 seconds to get to the default piano sound after power up. My little Casio is probably at least that fast. While my ("late 2011") macbook boots up in just a few seconds (if it was even shut down and not just sleeping), it still takes a substantial amount of time to load up an existing project in Reaper with say 6 or 8 tracks of instruments and effects loaded up in them. I guess that's why I end up using little iOS synths often - they start up really fast.
Roboprogs Likewise, my VR-09 also starts up in about 4 seconds - and I suspect that is of similar architecture to the Juno DS, which would probably account for those....
My Triton Le also took a similar length of time to boot originally, but I noticed that it took a second or two longer after I installed the EXB Sample upgrade and extra RAM - clearly it then had more to deal with during the boot, so that made perfect sense.
Have to say though, quite why the Kronos takes forever to boot is a bit baffling.... Yes, it's a beast and has a lot to do on bootup - but as I said before, even the mighty Jupiter-80 can do it in about 14 seconds-ish?..... :-)
I can understand now, if you just want to quickly switch a Kronos on and play something on the spur of the moment, that boot time is going to be mega frustrating !
JV1080 is still the king for me :)
Integra 7 has more precise sounds and when you play it, articulations are really better !

Definitely the JV1080 - the richness and warmth of the sounds won me over. It's alittle like comparing vinyl to the early CD's (showing my age here) - the CD's lacked depth, richness and punch. Very good video so I'm now a new subscriber :)
At first I thought the 1080 was blowing the Integra 7 out of the water but then I readjusted my headphone position. Now I give the Integra 7 the edge. The SuperNatural sounds just can't be beat. Add to that the complete collection of Roland legacy sounds, it can't lose.

Another wonderful head-to-head. I have been loving discovering the JV-1080 through Roland Cloud, and physically have the JV 880 waiting for our basement remodel to be finished to get my studio back into full service :). Makes me think I will be quite OK with what I have for a while! The 1080 has an amazing personality to it.

I bought my JV2080 about month ago. It cost me less than 200 $ and the sound of 20 yo machine has blown me away. It's realy cool for this prise and with so much capabilities. Fantastic synth should I say!
The Integra was made so you didn't have to buy SRX expansion boards, and to consolidate their best rack machines all into one good workflow. Everyone blindly saying one is better than the other in sound needs to clean their ears. As the rack gets older, solder connections get oxidized and more capacitors get damaged the integra will sound exactly like that JV 1080 if you're worried it's gonna sound too clean
Hi Woody as an 5080 owner ( had 1080 & 2080 in past) whose thinking of getting an integra I knew this was going to of great interest to me BUT then I almost fell off my chair! as for the first piano preset you happened to play my absolute favourite piano song from that era ( originally a Yamaha cp I believe), so thanks for that you really made my day!!! 😁
What continues to amaze me over and over again with vintage synths and samplers in these type of comparisons is how much they make up for the lack of technology with sheer punch, presence, and personality.

the need to replace it. As many of us hear the Coloration of Specific Brand Synths the most obvious & well
known being Moog. While this was much more profound during the 70's & 80's we could pick out a Moog,
Arp, Oberheim, Korg, Sequential Circuits aka DSI, Roland, Kawai, Kurzweil, PPG, Nord, Yamaha, Syncaliver, Emu, Voyetra, Casio, Wasp maybe even an Ensoniq. ( If I've skipped one of your favorites please forgive me. )
Yes there are many others some that Truly stuck out above the others within a particular Brand like the CS80
DX7, Jupiter 8, D50 and Memory Moog, and many others too numerous & some merely forgotten as time has
its way of pushing some memories deeper into our brains hard drive. Perhaps we forgot to name that folder,
the data became corrupted due to a Virus / Infection. Worse, it was overwritten during the " Defragmentation
Process " that some people believe happens in our minds during rest periods called. Sleep states, or Dreams.
We humans were once told we only use less than a 10th of our Brains abilities ? So there must have been lots
of empty tracks & sectors available for us Synth users to store & recall all the patch Names in our Synths when
the Tech of the day only allowed us to store 32 patches. Patches that were represented via A letter & numbers.
We memorized those relationships of the 2 Digit Patches in our Juno 60, DW 8000, Poly 6, Prophet 5, & many
others knowing Patch #11 = Clavinet. We also knew many hundred phone numbers & addresses. How many
of us actually know our own cell phone numbers? And why would we, ok AI how often do you call yourself ?
Like everything else that we hold in high regards, those Near & Dear to our Heart Mind & Especially our Ears.

Fast forward 50 plus years "Jump Jump for your Love " as I Pointer it out ? Recreating new ways to reverse
engineer our beloved & most Iconic Synths of all times. At first it came by way of software VST's I must admit
i hated Soft Synths. I'm guessing most of you felt the same, or we wouldn't be Woodidiots hanging out @ the Shack. Looking for the next affordable good sounding piece of hardware Woody can find in the classified ads.
Were living in a great time period where we can chose to buy a recreation of some of our favorites, like the
Behringer Model "D", Deep Mind, & soon to follow Pro One, String & Voocorder, Arp Oddity all sound as good
or better than the originals and have more bang for the buck, adding Clark Tech FX Midi & CV I/O's that were
not options on the originals. Besides I beg you do not covet these Iconic left over Synths of yesteryear.
They're quite heavy & can have, NO will have expensive repair issues. Remember we have MIDI buy different
sounding products from different makers. Get a Brand Special & beloved sounding filters. Then Layer the hell
out of them, and build your own Sound palette. Older Workstations are also Great buys don't let those Synth
Collectors get em first & Causing the prices to skyrocket. You don't need a real Wurly, Clav or a Rhodes you
will be disappointed. I promise you, stay away for $2000 you can get many variations of those sounds in any
of the modern Synths with FX plus many other needed & useful sounds. Casio has a New Synth lots of great
sounds for $179 Google it New Casio Products NAMM 2018 you'll be shocked at what you can get for cheap..

This was very helpful, and I was surprised how the JV-1080 held it's own! Along with the 6000 sounds, the Integra 7 really got me interested because it can port all of the surround and editing over to a DAW.
Listening to those old JV sounds makes me even more excited to get back my old XP60 back from the repair shop!

1080 is brasher and more forward with nicer bottom end, the integra is smoother and creamier. Some of those patches sounded better on the 1080 while some sounded better on the integra. My conclusion is you should have both heh.
Exactly, 1080 is VERY cheap these days anyway
What you describe as "forward nicer bottom end" is the DACs, which lack high frequencies and have less resolution than the Intega, which has modern DACs.

Very interesting comparison. I recall doing a similar comparison with my XP-50 when I first purchased my XV-5080, although in that case even the SR-JVxx cards sounded fuller in the XV. Honestly though both sounded awesome! In your comparison I believe that each synth has their strengths. Another great video! BTW I think your new series should be called "Woody Rack Shack".

The dist guitar is much better on the JV-1080, and I know what I'm talking about, the sound of the JV-1080 sounded warmer. Of course this is my personal opinion and as a guitarist I know which sound I'm after. As always, the best synth comparison videos you can find on TH-cam these days. Well done Woody!
As a longtime user of the MT32 and producing masses of custom patches with LA Synthesis, I was surprised in 2006 when I auditioned the then new Fantom at how similar the standard patches were still. Roland patches from the D50 era onward have a distinct correlation. Here, the JV-1080 stands its ground and use of an outboard FX or two would make the distinction between the two modules largely indiscernible.
I like the sound of that dusty old JV-1080 better. Yes, the Integra sounds good. The JV-1080 sounds authentic.
I agree, I preferred only a small number of sounds from the Integra vs the JV1080.
Dusty, no kidden, I would ship you a brush to dust off those front plates of those mods and that display screen bottom basil lip, but I am just out of brushes.
The integra has all the sounds he played on the JV. He just chose alternatives (wich are really many) in some cases.

The JV-1080 overall has a warmer more engaging sound vs the Intergra, which I was very surprised....I'll be looking on Ebay for a used 1080 -> 5080 soon...Great Video!!!!!
The point is that the JV 1080 & 5080 are built into the PCM side of the Integra-7. On the Super Natural side you simply have to adjust a few fix settings to fit your personal taste. I seem to use more PCM & SRX patches myself but when I do find myself on the Supernatural side of things I am not disappointed

Would love to see a series on Benefits or Pros & Cons of touring / recording with Roland new and vintage hardware vs. Omnisphere, NI, etc. I had JV1010 years ago and loved it... I now own every VST out there and they are great in the box, but haven't dumped money on a Macbook etc and am not overly keen on having no USB ports etc, so am thinking of maybe gigging with used hardware instead.

What this does show is how amazing the 1080 was, and still is. Quite a few of the presets on it sound better to me.
I mean, you can tell that the Integra patches are trying to add small nuances, and some of them sound great too, but the 1080 patches sound like they would still sit very well into a mix.
I am biased, of course, having spent many years delving into the JV-1080 innards. Both are fantastic synths, but wow, after all these years, the 1080 still impresses.

Can't wait for the vids on other rack synths. Even better if a few of them have the good old "John's Arcade" inspired road trip montage / timelapse.

Definitely JV-1080, has more character. I also noticed with my XV-5050 that the newer these synth got, the more polished, cleaner and arguably duller the sounds are.

Yeah I have both a XP-50 (same sound engine as the JV-1080) and a XV-5080. With the same samples the XV-5080 is just a bit cleaner sounding, with less aliases. This sounds good on some sounds, like the strings, but a bit flat on some of the analog style synth sounds. THe XP-50 sounds a bit warmer.
Very good Woody. I've had the i7 for a while now and it really comes into its own when used with the iPad app (makes navigating sounds a breeze), individual effects on each of the 16 parts, the brilliant motional surround sound and of course having all the Roland legacy sounds at your finger tips. I have a first generation Fantom (FA76) and I prefer some of the layered patches on the Fantom but the i7 is the go to unit for me for composing. Great upload. As for a name somebody mentioned Rack to the Future which I think is super, I can't do better. Gear wise how about a Novation KS Rack (around 2003) or Roland V-Synth XT (2003ish). Cheerio.
Really looking forward to the new series you mentioned. Sounds like a great idea! I recently bought a 1080 - my first synth. I also have my eye on a Kurzweil K2000R and Korg Wavestation SR and I'd love to see your appraisal of each before buying either.
some great synths you mention there! of those i think the k2000 has aged the worse, but what a monster it was at the time!
Interesting. I only ever hear good things about the K2000, and the only negative comment is that it's complex to programme. I'd be very interested to see you do a video about it sometime.
@@WoodyPianoShack No, K2000 is great synth. Much better as 1080 if you will start doing your own patches. I love 1080 and I had one. Now I have it on Roland Cloud. I have JV880 which I love and Integra which I think I should sell, but SN and Drums are still making me keep Integra. Latest I would sell K2000 but I started to dig in and VAST is so powerful so I decided to keep it. Also sound of K2000 is great, big low end, great sounding synth, much better as 1080. But 1080 has some better sounds as K2000 (but from sound editing 1080 is very easy, for sure not so powerful and complicated like K2000). Thats the difference.
I just can not believe how after 20 year there has been so little improvement or innovation in the digital synth world. I guess the return of analog synths had something to do with that. I still love my digital synths and my 1080 and Fantom G is used on every track I write. I am hoping that this analog era will end soon and we can once again get excited when we hear these digital masterpieces rise again.
There has been plenty. Roland just haven't updated their rompler tech since the early 2000s.
definitely evolution, not revolution! same pretty much goes for all the big manufactures since the 90s i would say.
I agree. In terms of sound, hardware instruments have barely evolved in the last years. They are just adding touchscreens etc. to them. There are some fantastic sample libraries and softsynths, but most of the new ones being released are just something like "phrase based cinematic" and not actual instruments you can PLAY yourself. I think these are the reasons for the recent love for analog synths: Nowadays it's incredibly hard to actually come up with a product that would introduce some NEW kind of sound. I hope that someone will be able to achieve this
@Mattsynth: the hardware makers do seem to be VERY conservative the last quarter century. Ouch.
OTOH, there are a lot of interesting things being done in software. E.g. - the Native Instruments plugins. I think there are some interesting modules on iOS, too, but what I have at least so far are largely emulations of bread and butter classics (e.g. - iM1, FM4, Lorentz, iWavestation, bs-16i)
True. Software like Kontakt is the way to go nowadays.
Woody would know that the Integra, among other things, is a collection of all-in-one Roland heritage synth sounds from 1080, 5080, SRX etc. In addition it has the supernatural sound module for the acoustic tones, drums and SFX . To my ears the drums on the Integra sounded much better than the 1080. With other patches, it sounded more or less similar cos the Integra is supposed to faithfully reproduce the 1080 anyways?!! In fact in many places it all sounded pretty much the same between the two. I think one should look at all the extra stuff that the Integra has and see whether that is really worth it for the money and one's own applications. I found this comparison interesting but futile. It is like saying 20 years ago I had a big Plasma TV which today still gives me a great picture .. although it is not a smart TV and weighs a ton!!
Hi Woody, great video as always. Thanks for comparing the two "monsters". I have an integra-7 and despite the beautiful old PCM sounds from the past, actually I'm using mainly the SuperNatural acoustic and SN Synth and mix them (should say layer them) with some PCM ones to make them shine. The integra-7 is my "bread and butter" sounds synth like Acoustic Pianos, Guitars, AC.Guitars, Strings, Pads, Bases, Poly Synths, and Lead Guitars (SN and PCM layered are a killer!!!).
However, from your demo, if I had to choose one with my eyes closed, I would have chosen the JV-1080, as it sounded a lot better (to my ears) than the integra-7.
Think I need more time to explore the PCM sounds on the integra... :-)

P.S: I miss my old rompler Famtom Xa!! It had sounds that I could never replace, for as much as I tried, it never got close.
The right answer is JD-990 with the Vintage Synth board😏. I did end up getting one of these Integras after missing some of my old XP-50 sounds. Some sounds are not the same, since the XP/JV stores reverb+chorus with the patch, but the value for the amount of content is huge. The full VSTi editor/librarian works great for me.
Sounded more like a DEvolution, if you ask me. The JV 1080 sounded much warmer, spacious, uniquely expressive, and clearer. The Integra 7 sounded harsher, slightly flat, and sometimes cluttered. The JV 1080 easily wins in terms of sound quality, which is the most important. Great video! This is so valuable and helpful! Thank you very much!

Sound is sound, and if it sounds better one way over another (with lower or higher khz - doesn't matter), then it sounds better that way depending on its purpose. It's as simple as that. If you don't like that, then tough. You don't like the JV-1080, that's your problem, not mine. Quit being such a pest.

Very good video, Woody, comparing thoroughly the two rack synths. One year ago, I was in a dilemma choosing either the Integra-7, or the JV-1080. After a lot of searching, I decided to get the JV-1080, which I now have full-expanded with the Orchestral, Vintage Synth, 60s & 70s, and Session boards; a choice that I am actually very happy with, as my current Roland palette is more than enough for my classical, rock, metal and synthwave needs.

Thank you for uploading this excellent Demo. Over the years I've put Roland down to the 3rd slot behind Korg and Yamaha but this has been a great advert for the Roland sounds.I am now considering buying An Integra (or a 2nd hand JV1080) to work alongside my Korg PA1000 which is superb on the arranger side of things. While the arguments will rage on the Synth sounds, The JV1080 is great, I preferred the Orchestral and guitar Sounds on the Integra. Having got rid of My Roland BK7M due to it's inferiority to the Korg PA series, I may well be back to Roland with this sound module. Back in the early 90's Roland were kings of Sound Modules, I had one linked to my Atari at the time but felt they had not moved onwards and upwards alongside the other giants. This has certainly changed my views and having read the comments from the Roland fans on here my thoughts have definitely changed.Thanks to everyone who commented and Woody 's Piano Shack for the insightful demo.
Woody, I smiled at the thought of a Woody Rack series...I have had several of them racked up for many years...Wavestation SR, Yamaha Motif Rack ES, Korg M1R, Oberheim Matrix1000, JV-1080 and a few more :) I think that type of video would be great

Seems to me that the Integra sounds more natural and warm, and the JV1080 sounds more raw. This makes the Integra great for allround studio and recording work. Personally I like the bite and rawness of the JV1080 more, especially live. Two awesome and great modules compared here.
Found a large difference in the saxophone and drum sounds, for which in this case I would certainly prefer the integra.
I like this channel for not being biased towards either modern hardware or software synths/sample libs or old hardware. Those who only use vintage equipment tend to glorify the imperfections too much. Most of the "Supernatural" sounds here are actually a lot better than the old ones, especially the bass and sax. Interestingly the string orchestra sounds almost identical

Don't forget, if your not happy with presets you can start from scratch with a couple of saws and maybe a sub, LFO, filter cutoff and res, filter env, amp env, reverb and dozens of other settings to create a patch like a model d or just about anything else.

sure, and may be its only master EQ on Integra to tweak somehow? ... or are analog circuits these days somewhat uglier? anyway, who boughts rack things today for pro-use? I think that anybody pro uses soft-synths mostly now(?), having only selected/loved keybeds as controllers? ...On my 2 days journey, I found now not only MainStage (I am PC guy though) but also GigPerformer (Mac/Win) with its GPScripting, so, it seems there will be something to develop soon, who knows...

A nice comparison Woody. I have the "bane" of the Waldorf series rack monster - MicroQ. It can be found for peanuts and has some great sounds. It is universally regarded as a poor man's Waldorf due to the lack of analog filters (they are DSP modeled) but it sounds great IMO. It does have multi-timbral voicing, contains wavetables and resonant comb filters. I like it as well as the other Waldorf's I own. Great bass and pad monsters.

I have used the 1080 in our studio now for I guess 20 years. Love it. We use it to record nle multitrack. Unlimited tracks and the 1080 in a studio environment is hard to beat.

Follow up: An oddly intriguing video that sent me down a lengthy rabbit hole, chasing down both units in what were sometimes bitter and lengthy negotiations, trying to wrestle them away from sellers for the absolute, least they'd accept. I did btw, finally land the pristine, "Michael Lang" collection JV 1080 module,..after a day and a half of negotiating. That being said, I've watched this video now, at least a dozen times, (Got the I-7 in the 9's) and the 1080 seems much louder to me. I don't know if it's because it actually is, or has a more analog flavor, or if it's 'actually' louder..but, when playing electric piano especially, the difference was dramatic. I feel..I'm hearing more harmonic distortion from the 80. But, that's what made me fall in love with it as well. Time after time, that organic flavor was there. Had to have it. lol. Lots of exploration and experimenting ahead, can't wait.

Thank you Woody, you've made my mind up. For bang per buck I'd go for the JV1080 over the newer module. There's something a bit special about older kit. I think it's down to the fact at the time this was new technology and Roland really pushed the boat out to make it as good as it could be.
Always amazes me how technology changed so much between 1978 and 1998 but between 1998 and 2018, not as much of a leap!

I'm actually in the process of recording a song in the late 80's/early 90's Soulful Classic House genre. I'm using the Roland D50, JV-1080, Jupiter 8 and Korg M1 synths as well as the TR-909 for those infamous drum sounds. I absolutely LOVE the JV-1080! The presets are so fantastic despite how old that module is!

Essentially this album will be a love letter to my youth, when my life (and life in general) was simple, carefree, and happy. Back when music was real and just better overall. I'm not a fan of the direction modern music has went in the last 15 years. So I'm putting together a collection of songs that will serve as a reminder of how things used to be. Knowing the world today I'll probably be "cancelled" for it 🙄 lol
super good fun. As an electronica guy, the realistic stuff isn' t for me but I had a 1080 for a little while..maybe I didn't quite get it. I have a Korg O3/RW and loaded with some Italian guy's 90's ambient patches..good move. Been looking at the Roland JV880... but as far as these go...agree with the assessment. The strings on both are good. Drums sound better on the new one for sure as well as the clav..many things are the same. Kind of shows how much the creativity or abilities of the user/player matters in the end. Thanks..good fun.
That sax sound illustrates pretty well how much things have evolved. Incredible to think that people commented on how "real" the sax was on the JV-1080 back in 94.

The 1080 had just finished playing a nice Hammond sort of sound, then, the Integra tried to immitate the same - with a transistor radio caught in a blender?
right! other organ presets are available thankfully, this is one of the many rock organs, likely i didn't find the best one.
I see. I hadn't realised you were having to find a patch that corresponded as close as possible - I was just assuming the Integra offered those same patches, but made them sound a little different - or a lot, in this case :)
Is there a midi keyboard controller that would controll the parameters filters etc on the 1080 or other JV / XV Series via midi ???
As ive mentioned before , i owned the Jv1080 previously and, a few years back aquired the xv3080 which doesn't quite crumble my cookie in the same way. The 1080 has a primitive rawness to it , that seems hard to beat in my opinion.
Having said all that, the intergra is a more than worthy update and development to the s&s form factor of Roland.

I own both, no complaints with neither of them. Integra is a massive sounds arsenal, with today facilities. JV's serie is an anthem, that's it. Thanks for in-depth comparison :-)
Nice comparison Woody! You should have gone even further back in time by comparing the Integra to the U-110, Roland's first-ever rompler. :)
One thing the Integra is sadly missing is the patches of SR-JV80 expansion cards. Most of the samples are included since many were re-released as SRX cards, but the beautifully programmed patches are not. That's why I have a fully expanded XV5080 in addition to the Integra.
totally agree, that would really be nice, since the roms are onboard, perhaps roland could release all presets on Axial.
Woody Piano Shack That would be great. Roland did that when releasing SRX boards that were a collection of earlier SR-JV80 samples (3 SR-JV80 repackaged into one SRX): The box included a CD ROM with the SR-JV80 patches so you could load them into your XV. That way you could buy 4 SRX boards and get the equivalent of 4 x 3 = 12 SR-JV80 cards :)
I luv listening to you play, great job, as for my thoughts on the modules I don,t really like the sound of either of them, but if I had to pick one I would go with the JV-1080, mainly because it sounds warmer, the Integra is too harsh for my ears, although the clav and organ sounds were more realistic.
Maybe try and get your hands on a korg kronos and a Prologue...They sound pretty good....Cheers mate

Racking my brain on that one ;) ... Sorry, but, great video. Some things were ahead of their time. Let's face facts Roland has a great legacy of recognisable sounds. I have had G,A,S for an Integra 7 for sometime, however, it's going to have to wait until I clear some other unused gear out of my studio. Otherwise the mighty mistress of the house will not be pleased!.

Love my I-7, but I have to say in this demo, I was more impressed by the 1080.. I could use either of them all day tbh.. the I-7 is the bread and butter of most of my songs.. such a great piece of gear.

I finally got one Woody! £150 from eBay, took delivery of it on Saturday and the guy had it courier delivered to me in it's very own flight case. Now got it hooked up alongside my JV-880 and JV-1010 which both have the SRJV80-04 classic synth and SRJV80-08 keyboards of the 60's and 70's expansion cards installed in them.. Fallen in love with the 1080's Taj Mahal preset already. Now, time to see if I can follow Espen's example. lol

That will be a master piece in my home studio, aside with my YAMAHA MU90, this will give me Yamaha and Roland sounds available ( I am using LOGIC and Ableton ).

Weird, all these people saying the Integra does what the 1080 does, I don’t hear that. The difference in sound is ridiculous. At points the Integra sounded like General MIDI on a sound blaster. I came here expecting the Integra to win hands down so I could buy one, now I’m not so sure
Very interesting comparison, Woody. One thing worth trying is removing fx in the integra patches or using a similar fx as the jv 1080.
I love the comparison video, to be me i prefer the jv1080 sounds and there is times when the Integra 7 sounds okay. But i still prefer the classic jv1080 sounds mostly i feel like they have more of a charm. As for a name i guess Woody Rack Shack. Or Woody Rackvania.
