How to wire a GY6 scooter regulator / rectifier and how it all works (Part 3 the regulator)

  • Okay, here we test all the voltages with the bike running, and with the bike switched off, this should help you make sure your regulator is properly hooked up, and also properly wired (if this doesn't answer your questions, let me know and I'll do an even more indepth set of videos). But this should cover everything.

    I've been watching your videos about China forever and imagine my surprise when I was googling a CDI for a go-kart and I saw a video of you talking about the regulator rectifier! I ended up having to rebuild the entire harness from scratch. Total nightmare but I think I'm almost there. Keep up the good work!

    I'm not sure, but I can go check sometime this week (a little busy with the holidays), one thing I know is that when you're connecting up a high powered light, it's a good idea to connect a resistor to the circuit. I'll try and figure it out for you.

      Hey so on my 150cc scooter the white Wire is 0.50 and the Yellow wire is 0.52 from the Voltage rectifier But on yours they're both 0.0.0 why is that is this right or wrong I need help

    White is 14vac from altenator.
    Red is 12Vdc for regulator to battety.
    Yellow is 12 vac for lights.
    Green is ground

  • @baggie00001

    The red wire is the regulated output from the regulator. The yellow and white wire are both from the stator and the green wire is the ground wire.

    The reg/rec takes those 1 or 3 AC phases and, with the help of a few transistors, transforms them into one DC output. These produce a bit of heat, hence the heat sink glued to them with thermal paste. The DC output should be only one wire - the other being the common ground.

  • @truthseekers666
    @truthseekers666 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @islandminisunlimited Also the final wire may be the magnetic field supply for the alternator. Without this connected you will get zero AC when revving. This only applies if you have a field powered alternator. If you have a fixed magnet powered altternator then it will supply power even if that wire is not present.

    I like the way you show and explain things. I am having a problem with my headlights.
    I had stator replaced and then I lost headlight. My 150cc scooter starts and runs very well.
    Bulbs were checked there ok....what should I check out next ? thanks.

  • @pjvenda
    @pjvenda 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a simple system, really. The alternator produces one (two wires) or three (three wires) phases of AC voltage. All these wires go into the reg/rec. DC voltage may be picked up in any of the alternator wires, but by coincidence/luck/alternator malfunction only! The way to measure if the alternator is working is by measuring the AC voltage between each of the wires coming from it (not necessarily with the common ground).

    Thanks you solved a problem with another motor that I was working on should I use an ALt. or use the stator from motor all I need is a shunt terminal that is an AC reg . converter .

  • @serpentza
    @serpentza  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Mr2010gartman you say your lights are dim? Is this with a fully charged battery? Have you connected a muli-meter to your battery and revved the motor?

  • @truthseekers666
    @truthseekers666 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heres how it works. Red is 12 volt for charge. Test the alternator in AC only mode and rev the bike. It will go up in volts dramatically and drop when not revved. This will be on two wires going into the regulator - dont test by going AC wires to earth as this dumps the power from the alternator to your chassis. Test across say the white and green or the other. The final wire is probably a sense tester and isnt needed. I imagine the regulator is neagtive earthed so yes the red + and the metal -.

  • @jayval2431
    @jayval2431 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    it means Red wire DC going to the + battery (use to charge the battery), the white wire is coming from the stator, AC. The green is negative. The yellow wire is going to the headlight and its an AC.Many of the scooters headlight supply are in AC.

  • @truthseekers666
    @truthseekers666 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    you need to find out what those colours mean by searching for the "pin outs" or "wiring diagram" for that model of regulator. It will have one wire as earth (thats known as negative or - minus) - one will be to connect to the battery live side (thats the positive or + plus side) and the last wire will be the one that connects to the alternator/dynamo generator. So if you can work that out your bike may use RED as + BLACK as - minus/earth and the third wire will need to go on the old alternator

    @truthseekers666 thank you for that info, my friend has a 1960's garden tracotr that he wants to use for fun and tractor pulling and the battery will hold 12 volts but the voltage don't go up none when the tractor is running and the battery only starts the tractor once after a good charge, so i wanted to buy a cheaper regulator and found this one for $20, but noticed it had 4 wire, not 3, so now i can tell him to order one of these and i can wire it up!

    Hey there, I recently done a GY6 swap in my Honda Zoomer/Ruckus. I used the wiring harness from the doner scoot and it ran great. In fact we done London to amsterdam twice in it. Then I desided to do another swap to accomodate a fatty setup. I bought a new motor, but kept the harness from the previous build. The harness take the 5 pin regulator (white, green, yellow, black and red). The new motor has 4 pin(3xyellow and a green) Now I cant seem to get it to charge agian. BTW, where you from? SA?

    I replaced my stator and the scooter runs now but the headlights blew instantly and the headlight circuit was showing 6V at idle up to 20+ volts with rpm. The battery was charging properly but now it isn't charging anymore. The rectifier appears to have gone out. OK so I'll get a new one, but why did it die? The yellow wire going to the rectifier from the stator shows 60 Vac at about 3000 rpm. Is this enough to blow the rectifier?

    I recently replaced the regulator of my Zhongyu ZY50QT-3, unfortunately I hadn't found this video before I did that.
    But now I wonder why my battery does charge when my lights are off.
    When I have my main beam on it doesn't charge at all
    If I use the position lights I see a voltage increase on the multimeter with a running engine (directly measured on the terminals of the battery)
    But with the main beam on I get something like 12.1 - 12.2 Volts and on a long ride it will drain my battery so far

  • @webmasterbou8be

    that even de CDI can't generate the power anymore for the iginition and the engine will stall.
    I hoped it was the regulator, but I still have the problem.
    So I guess it's the stator/alternator.
    How do I replace it? And which one do I need for a 50cc?
    I do not want to remove pulleys from the vario or the crank axle (I am not THAT handy)

    My bike will only keep the battery charged if I dont use anything else. I get 50 volts A/C out of my alternator.I put another rectifier on it and it still didnt do any better.One of the stator diodes burned up That only ran the bike but not charge at all. I also replaced the wire to the battery with 10 gauge wire. I am sick of it now and I am going to build one. Do you know what size diodes I need to start with? Japan put a lot of bad charging systems on a lot of bikes. Its hard for me to get 13V it does good to stay at 12.6V. If you can give me some info on diodes I really would appreciate the help Glenn

    My tail/real lights are not working but the break lights is fine. I noticed both rear/tail light have been blown. However, when I changed the light and turned the scooter on the rear/tail did not turn on? So I was thinking if it had something to do with the wiring connector, etc?

    Moving the camera from the connection to the meter is confusing. Show us the meter when you change the setting so we can do the same, but when you test the connection just tell us what the reading is. We don't need to see it. I think keeping the camera on the connection and showing us how you connect the meter is more important.

      Not really. He showed that it doesn't need to be connected in order to start the bike and have it running.
      The only time your regulator would cause a no-spark would be if it was connected and it was shorting, but it's probably blow the main fuse as a result.
