Not only is she deaf voicing a deaf girl, but she also had to made her performance match the animation, which in itself is difficult to do even with the performance of other actors already done. All of these actors did such a good job in this movie! Not only do the kids sound their age (which is my problem in a lot of anime) and their voices sound like they could come from these characters. I love this film so much!

Imma have to to disagree with you. The dubbed actress is so much better at portraying shoukos feelings than the Japanese pop singer is. I just never felt any real emotion in her voice. but In the dubbed now that had me crying from the first time she tried to speak. You can really hear the dubbed actress giving it her all trying to say the words that shouko wanted to say. But the Japanese pop singer just sounds like she's lowering her voice and making it a bit more high pitched, she doesn't sound like she's invested in the character at all.

Shouko forgives shouya when he gives her the notebook because she never blamed him, she blamed herself. Shouya and Shouko's self hate is over the same thing but shouko's is unfounded. That's why they become romantically interested in each other, because they want the other to see it's not their fault and on the bridge shouko understand that it wasn't her fault and shouya understands that shouko forgives him, for real this time. The story is about romance and a lot of other things. Each person will see a different part of the image, that's why the movie's so good. The romance is also a very important part of the movie, it's not the main theme but it wasn't an after thought. Even in the flashback you can see that shouya liked shouko but when he couldn't speak to her it upset him and led him to bully her. Also romantic intent guides ueno's entire character arc.

I was super curious about the hearing aids and thought they were cool and wondered "how exactly do they work?". Which is how we became friends.

I feel very bad that the deaf can't hear music. The people who can hear, like me, often take the ability for granted in drastically different ways. Instead of interacting, all we do is shove earphones in our ears and block out the world around us, perhaps as an escape of happiness. I wish the deaf could hear what great music there is to know what joys there are in hearing.
Not to mention THIS SOUNDTRACK FROM THIS MOVIE MAKES YOU TEAR UP. Especially the last scene of the movie. Ugh I just love that song and the entire songtl track to this movie
I honestly disliked the black haired girl, she was honestly so cruel. She had many times and chances to change and say sorry, but she didn't. She was just petty and in general a brat. Can't believe the others just let that black haired girl in, I would honestly not do that. I would tell her to stop and leave us alone.
You know, I was actually impressed that the writers didn’t have her change and made her stay the same until the end. Of course I’m not condoning her behavior but if you noticed, even she didn’t exactly have it easy. In the beginning she, ishida and the rest were all this one friend group, then all of a sudden this girl comes outta nowhere and then she just ruins everything. I believe she loved the life she had as a kid but just couldn’t accept the fact that things changed and that friendship she had in the past was gone. She probably spent the years before reuniting with Ishida in denial that all her friends were gone because of Shouko. And what more every time she tried talking to Shouko, all she’d get was an apology. After all those apologies they probably started to feel meaningless to her. In the end she was just left very frustrated and upset and bitter towards her.
Hey hey hey chill try to read the manga, Sahara, the girl used to be a close friend to Shoko in elementary and who also used to be bullied by Ueno in elementary, the three are getting close when they went to college. Remember that scene where Ueno said to Shoko "ba-ka/mo-ron" Shoko just laughed at it and didn't give a fck about what Ueno said meaning she is always friendly and ready to accept others. And also, I would pick Ueno over Kawai because you know Kawai's a narcissist rather than Ueno who saw her own mistakes and even blames herself for her bad attitude and in the manga you can clearly see Ueno is changing slowly.
I mean if you really hate her that bad no big deal for me we all have different opinions but for me I love all the characters equally and I can see everyone is changing for good especially Ueno (well I read the manga) and yeah if you're still not convinced it's okay😆

Deaf people aren't different from us at all. We all want the same thing, and that is to be loved. Even if you can't make them understand, you have to show them your love and how much they mean to you in the world, just like you would do to any other person.
I LITERALLY cried in the movie. She doesn't deserve the treatment she got and that meant a LOT to me. Throughout elementary school, I have been shoved around teased. Pretty much I have been bullied due to my speech impediment issues. Every day, I used to be pulled out of my class to go to a special classroom because I never had the learning capacity like the other kids. And the fact that Shoko has been bullied due to her disability is heart wrenching to me.

I can't recall if the anime covered it, but in the manga it was revealed that Naoko had convinced herself that Shoko was basically a big conniving faker. Not being deaf, but her personality and attitude and everything, and that she was purposely using her disability (or abusing, rather) for sympathy points. Not that it makes her actions ok, but at least it's a little less confusing.
Y’all in the manga they definitely get together. At the end of chapter 61, everyone goes their separate ways for college, which Shoko going to Tokyo. Right before she leaves he was about to confess his love but choked at the last second, which was jarring, but at the last chapter everybody reunites again and the two are shown to be holding hands and blushing, which is obviously showing that he admitted his love to her sooner or later during the time skip.

All the voice acting was really good except for the mother to be honest. I like sub more too usually but the voice acting in this was really emotional and good.
Watching a silent voice made me feel so much empathy for Shuko. If she was an actual person, I would give her the biggest hug I can give and due to bullying someone (especially those with disabilities)is something that really triggers me, fight people who were bullied her for being deaf. I Love her voice (especially as the English dubbed actress is deaf herself), as there is a sense of innocence and beauty in her voice, even if it isn’t like other people’s voices and you can’t help but fall in love with it. Shuko is someone you just want to protect, show love and support her because she’s amazing just the way she is and should be treated as an equal, a friend and a human being who is worthy of love. (when she said that she hated herself, I felt that because I feel the same way about myself a good amount of the time.) just have nothing but love for Shuko (honestly the best Anime girl of all time)
The fact that she tries to talk, the fact that she is so delicate. She is so adorable, the actress who did the voice who's deaf did an amazing job. I never felt so many emotions while watching an anime like this one, I'm glad I watched it with my two daughter's stuff like that happens at school in real life.

I think it was cool how they made the "you" at the end of her saying "I love you" as "oon" so it sounded close to the translation for Ishida to reasonably misinterpret as "moon".
I love how it shows her progression in talking as she grows up. The difference between her speaking as a little girl and as a teenager is realistic, at least to me.
This movie made me cry when I watched it. I was bullied hard back in school and this movie brought back a lot of old pain. I got made fun of for all kinds of stuff. At the end of the movie though, I felt better about what happened. As bad as they were, those experiences are in the past, and we have to keep living for the future. Better things are ahead.
The reason the English one got an actual deaf person to voice act for Shouko is because, knowing the current stupid social climate, people will point out a voice actress trying to emulate a deaf person is offensive no matter how well done it is.

i love this movie. It doesn’t even focus on the ”romance,” or ”love story.” It focuses on what matters; the important and impact of visuals. It does this especially well, by giving us some beautiful animation. their studio being burned down brought me to tears when i found out about It.

I can't recall if the anime covered it, but in the manga it was revealed that Naoko had convinced herself that Shoko was basically a big conniving faker. Not being deaf, but her personality and attitude and everything, and that she was purposely using her disability (or abusing, rather) for sympathy points. Not that it makes her actions ok, but at least it's a little less confusing.

Y’all in the manga they definitely get together. At the end of chapter 61, everyone goes their separate ways for college, which Shoko going to Tokyo. Right before she leaves he was about to confess his love but choked at the last second, which was jarring, but at the last chapter everybody reunites again and the two are shown to be holding hands and blushing, which is obviously showing that he admitted his love to her sooner or later during the time skip.

Imo the english dubbed version is better because you can't understand why no one understands her in the original because it all just sounds the same. in the english dubbed version you know why she's hard to understand if you know what I mean.
That's exactly why whenever I told my friends to watch this, even if they were sub watchers that they had to see it in dub so it would make more sense.
If I was in this movie, I'd instantly be friends with her, even if she's different, I would still care for her.

All the voice acting was really good except for the mother to be honest. I like sub more too usually but the voice acting in this was really emotional and good.

Watching a silent voice made me feel so much empathy for Shuko. If she was an actual person, I would give her the biggest hug I can give and due to bullying someone (especially those with disabilities)is something that really triggers me, fight people who were bullied her for being deaf. I Love her voice (especially as the English dubbed actress is deaf herself), as there is a sense of innocence and beauty in her voice, even if it isn’t like other people’s voices and you can’t help but fall in love with it. Shuko is someone you just want to protect, show love and support her because she’s amazing just the way she is and should be treated as an equal, a friend and a human being who is worthy of love. (when she said that she hated herself, I felt that because I feel the same way about myself a good amount of the time.) just have nothing but love for Shuko (honestly the best Anime girl of all time)

This movie made me cry when I watched it. I was bullied hard back in school and this movie brought back a lot of old pain. I got made fun of for all kinds of stuff. At the end of the movie though, I felt better about what happened. As bad as they were, those experiences are in the past, and we have to keep living for the future.

The reason the English one got an actual deaf person to voice act for Shouko is because, knowing the current stupid social climate, people will point out a voice actress trying to emulate a deaf person is offensive no matter how well done it is.
