Lyrics: My hat don't hang on the same nail too long My ears can't stand to hear the same old song And I don't leave the highway long enough To bog down in the mud 'Cause I've got ramblin' fever in my blood I caught this ramblin' fever long ago When I first heard a lonesome whistle blow If someone said I ever gave a damn They damn sure told you wrong I've had ramblin' fever all along Ramblin' fever, the kind that can't be measured by degrees Ramblin' fever, there ain't no kind of cure for my disease There's times I'd like to bed down on a sofa And let some pretty lady rub my back And spend the early morning drinking coffee And talking about when I'll be coming back 'Cause I don't let know no woman tie me down And I'll never get too old to get around I'm gonna die along the highway and rot away Like some old high-line pole, Rest this ramblin' fever in my soul Ramblin' fever, the kind that can't be measured by degrees Ramblin' fever, there ain't no kind of cure for my diseas
The song is a combination of catchy, rolicking melody and unusually strong lyrics. This is not your typical country cliche lyric. It's got a powerful message in creative images that are sometimes dark and sometimes lighter and more playful. My only minor correction of your lyric printed here, other than the desire to separate stanzas, is that I don't think he uses "and" in a couple of places where you have it. For example, in the section where he's imagining a morning spent on some woman's sofa, after drinking coffee, he goes directly to "talkin' about when I'll be coming back," with no "and" before it. It's very concise there and doesn't need "and" to fill the poetic lines out. The imagery of dying along the highway is remarkably rough stuff for a country lyric, too. Merle is the king, no question.
@@surfwriter8461 Coming from a small city in south central Texas (Hondo) where my dad and I farmed a couple of 100 acre plots south of town while he worked in the post office, " ...die along the highway and rot away..." is just poetic!! This is my favorite song of all my country songs.
This was the, the first Merle Haggard song I ever heard. My brother bought the album & it was playing when I got home from school one day. I still love it. And to see merle do it with Willie, Toby & Joe, is something special. You can clearly see how much they enjoyed do it together. My thanks to those who are responsible for the videos being on TH-cam, it's so great just to sit down and watch & listen. And songs like this are just as relevant today as they were back then, maybe even more so. Especially considering much of the garbage coming from the Nashville record executives there days.
Merle is king. If you're an aspiring songwriter, listen to him. He was a lyricist of the highest order: intense while using a language that everyone could understand and combining it with a melody that you wanted to sing along with.
I can imagine how toby is feeling doing this on stage with haggard and willie at the same time you would think you sre gonna wake up soon and it was a dream
Keep searching J Rex,,,there is a lot out there. If you like this, get into Southern Rock from 70's and 80's even....Marshall Tucker Band, Lynrd Skynrd, Allman Brothers, etc. Such great music, Southern Rock basically is country, but with kick a$$ guitar playing like you saw in this clip!
Considering the many miles and hardship Merle put in his life before he was 20 years old, I think it only natural he went first, but I hated to see Merle go, the state of Texas will shut down for a month (this Texan will for sure)when Willie is "called up yonder!" These two were cut from the same cloth. Merle California boy with Okie blood, but I think he had the Texas mentality....God Bless all these fabulous musicians!
I Love all those guys, but what an Honor that was, I bet, for Joe Walsh ha!! what a wonderful bunch of guys, but, Hank Jr. Should've been there! Wow, that MY have been TOO GREAT,
wow, great slide guitar break by Joe W (a.k.a. Eagles). sounded amazing. Willie and Merle, Toby, man, will these guys ever retire???? Probably not. mosrite60
Great performance by Merle and those anonymous guys in the band. He's in excellent voice and spirit here, delivering the lines with playful but forceful ways. Thanks for sharing this video. Incidentally, Willie seems like he isn't fully up to the task here, failing to remember the words or whatever it is. And Joe Walsh plays some good licks, but man, that guy looks too big for his guitar.
Hi. I'd like 2 comment about Mr.Keith.he's a wonderful singer who has talent.& a gd mind to write beaut ballads.hope 2 meet him at a concert Sunday. Ive loved his music since he first came out popular.& always will.
Thnks 4 commenting.they all sound,& play Just Awsum 2gerher! All having fun,& playing their Best Out! Toby, yor a hansum guy I'd like 2 meet in person Sunday!
Ive always admired Toby since I was young.& took my 1st.country step dance lessons too.U write beaut.songs from the heart Toby.& will always be in my heart.
If Toby Keith really wants to help the farmers, he might want to reconsider his support for Hussain Obama because he is the worst threat to family and farming that there has ever been.. Toby Keith whos side are you really on?
Out of all the people on that stage he was probably the only one who didnt vote for Obama lol. I guess you were stupid enough to believe that obvious parody video someone else made was actually him.

3 of my favorite country singers.
I love how Toby has the look of "holy shit that's Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Joe Walsh"
I think Toby would appreciate Norm more than Joe (and if you don't know who Norm is, well friend you're just proving my point)
@@SteelguitarLane considering you have "steelguitar" in your name I'm assuming you're talking about Norm Hamlet
Look at all them smiles, what a great group of singers and guitar players.
Merle you were and always will be the best to me. Love you, Willie, Toby, and Joe. Miss you MH. P DROZD
Love these three guys. Merle Toby is going to join you at those pearly gates be ready
❤
Heck I just read the title, how can you get a much better lineup, Joe Walsh on guitar, Merle /Willie and Toby. What a class act and a classic song.
Freaking Keltner on drums!!
Merle is king. If you're an aspiring songwriter, listen to him. He was a lyricist of the highest order: intense while using a language that everyone could understand and combining it with a melody that you wanted to sing along with.
You are spot on !
Merle was king but he shared the crown with mr George Jones
@@dustinmartin2372
George Jones was a magnificent singer, but he wrote very few songs himself.
Merle. The best singer songwriter combination that ever sang a country song
Yea him and Hank Sr. Love 'em both...love 'em all.........
Love this song, I listen to this song every night.
Now this is country music
Merle, Willie, AND Joe Walsh! Doesn't get any better then this!!!
And now Merle and Toby are no longer with us. Listen to a lot of there music and I do miss them❤
Joe nearly brought down the house with that solo,,, holy snappin rectums
All of these guys had arrived in the place in their careers that they could just enjoy playing together. Very cool!!
I can imagine how toby is feeling doing this on stage with haggard and willie at the same time you would think you sre gonna wake up soon and it was a dream
I love it when Merle point to Willie to take over the solo
When country was total badass. Now its absolute trash. SO glad we have youtube to hear these classics
I love how Nelson, Keith, and Haggard and in western cowboy styled clothes and Walsh is over there in fucking camo pants and a T-shirt XD
Thats Joe Walsh for ya, he does his own thing, I like that

This is awesome. I'm only 20 and I love this type of music. The old stuff is where it's at.

R. I. P.
Merle Haggard
Wow look at TOBY and Merle the best
Joe Walsh - what a player! :-)
Burned out drug addict. The lights on but nobody's home, even with his last two brain cells.
I love when Hag gets into the guitar players...Joe Walsh kick some a$$ on that one, great smile by Merle when he did!
Would you have ever thought that Willie would outlive Merle?
Considering the many miles and hardship Merle put in his life before he was 20 years old, I think it only natural he went first, but I hated to see Merle go, the state of Texas will shut down for a month (this Texan will for sure)when Willie is "called up yonder!" I love this song. And this version with Willy Nelson and friends is one of the best. Keep this country sound coming......
Beautiful
I Love all those guys, but what an Honor that was, I bet, for Joe Walsh ha!! what a wonderful bunch of guys, but, Hank Jr. Should've been there! Wow, that MY have been TOO GREAT,

You can really hear the stile of their albums in their solos pretty cool to hear all together
Cool how Joe W. Keeps his part to Merle's timing of the song with a twist of Joe and the Eagles. Not too shabby.!
Love you guys

This would be improved if either Norm or Merle had played the lead instead of Joe.
