In surveying, an AutoLevel is an optical instrument used to establish or verify points in the same horizontal plane. It is a type of dumpy level that has an automatic compensator that keeps the telescope level even when the instrument is not perfectly level.
A leveling staff is a graduated wooden or aluminum rod that is used with an AutoLevel to determine the difference in height between points or heights of points above a vertical datum. The staff is held vertically at each point where the height is to be measured, and the AutoLevel is sighted on the staff. The reading on the staff is then used to calculate the difference in height between the two points.
In this video, we will show you how to use an AutoLevel and a leveling staff to measure the difference in height between two points. I will also explain the basics of AutoLevel and leveling staff reading.
