The repeated / delay sound is Eddie using the volume control as a kill switch. There might be a small added delay but most of it is Eddie. He used his hands as he couldn't afford effects when the first album came out so a lot is just Eddie.
Really wrong info here. It is as he described it. It’s a echo at a certain rate that he is cutting the volume off in time to that echo so the next note can fit inside before the first echo. It’s easier to hear and watch happen on the lowest note he hits it once, but you hear it twice. So yes it’s an echo effect that he used to write a masterpiece with.
@@ekgrafix I didn't say NO delay. Most prob an echo / delay echo plex and phase or flange pedal but most of Eddie's sound came from him and his use of developed techniques. Not much distortion was used but gain from over driven Marshall and later Peavey amps (now Fender).
32:15 - Man, since you recognised all the solos/songs, I was hoping you'd recognise this one too! Spanish Fly is such an underrated song, one that shows that Eddie's tapping abilities were not limited to electric, distorted, amplified guitars, he could also do it on an acoustic guitar with nylon strings.

I saw a Documentary about Eddi. He said he opens up Amps and tampered with the Electronics and it blew regulary bleup and electrocuted him multiple times. He just wanted to find out new Sounds^^
Wanna try to emulate Edward and fail miserably? Give I'm The One a shot. I think this song is the most difficult rock song to play. 1 guitar, no overdubs, insane rhythm with impossible swing feel & ridiculous fills and solos. Pure genius. RIP GOAT.
Your knowledge is so impressive David! I’m about to have my first ever guitar lesson but everytime I see this video of Eddie I have no freakin clue how he did these things 😂 it’s just mindblowing to me how talented people can be in music. Learning a lot from watching your reviews. Could you maybe do some reaction to Dimebag/Pantera? Personally Dimebag is my favorite guitar player (and his favorite was Eddie) and I’m really interested on your thoughts about Dime
Pantera would be a tough band to do reactions to because I was a big fan of Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display Of Power, and Far Beyond Driven. A Pantera request would have to be something off any other album but those 3, or else it would have to be a live performance..
@@THEDavidHeretic well hey that’s not a bad thing! The Great Southern Trendkill is a fantastic album and so is Reinventing the Steel. For Southern Trendkill you could give The Underground in America/Sandblasted Skin a listen (they blend over in eachother) and for Reinventing the Steel - Uplift or Revelution is my name. Thank you for your response!
A few years prior to the concert, David Lee Roth, around the beginning of a concert in ‘83, referred to Eddie Van Halen as “king of 10 fingers and 6 strings.”
Thank God I got off the cigarettes back in 2005 after 27 years. I went cold turkey, just like when I quit drugs and alcohol in the 80's. It can be done it is a move i will Never Regret!
The first guitarist I saw 'drumming' for want of a better word, his fingers on the back of the neck in conjunction with operating the tremolo arm up and down rhythmically was Jimi Hendrix during a performance on film, I can't remember the song.
"It's Van Halen but it isn't Van Halen." Nope, it's Van Halen. The name of the band is taken from the brothers Alex (the eldest of the two) & Eddie Van Halen...Eddie doing the guitar & Alex doing the drums. It *IS* Van Halen in the most true sense of the phrase. 😁 When you first mentioned seeing Eddie toss his pick into the audience...Paying attention, it's easy to see that he did that multiple times during the solo. In general, the way Eddie's gestrues & facial expressions go when interacting with the audience, he absolutely loves what he's doing...That's how anyone can eventually get good at doing whatever they do. It's called "practice." But from this video I get the general impression that Eddie is sending a message (beyond the point of taking the audience on a mental/emotional journey of his own making), like "I've taken the time. I've put in the work. I know what I'm capable of doing. I'm glad to have this time to show you what that is." For instance, when you see him tapping with both hands up along the fingerboard, his hands are spaced apart just right to take advantage of the overlapping harmonic scales between different strings; he's using the harmonies of the instrument to play sequential notes faster than one hand can do... When you were talking about how Eddie plucked the springs in the back of the guitar...Well, Eddie not only built many of his own guitars from pieces that he wanted from other guitars, but he experimented a lot to create as many new sounds as he could discover. Then he worked to turn them into melodic harmonies. One thing that many of the newer generations miss when they listen to the older stuff like this is that, back then there were no auto-tuners, there were no sequencers or computer-controlled compensators. Many bands made use of distortion pedals to alter modulation but that was about it. Heck, keyboard synthesizers were still just barely coming into their own as musical instruments in their own right, as we've heard with the Edgar Winter Group. During much of Van Halen's earliest gigs, Eddie couldn't even afford the foot pedals so he figured out how to make that kind of sound by just *play the guitar* itself; even during this concert & his solo, he wasn't even using foot pedals because *he never needed them.* So, overall, in general, does Eddie make you a little more interested in listening to guitar solos than you have been up until now? Even just a little? Jimi Hendrix has done a lot with his guitar too, & others who "did their own thing" instead of trying to copy others. 🤗
Hey brother l don't remember the year l saw an advertisement on commenting on the negative aspects of long cigarettes. Somewhere around thirty give or take a few years, but it went like this, "in cigarette smoke theres known to be 103 known carcinagins, that's a 100 more known to be in rat poison."
Awesome, Outrageous Confessional David...to ffwd EVH all them times!!! :-)) Yeah, EVH didn't just play the guitar his own way...he CHANGED the electric guitar and amps to meet his expectation of what he wanted them to do (hence his 'Frankenstrat' guitar creation and also patents to his name). The tricky bit, volume knob/delay, is 'Cathedral' and amazing he plays this stuff while drunk as a skunk (allegedly). Then intro to 'Mean Street' (gotta recommend that album 'Fair Warning'...some piece of work!!). Two outrageous facts; 1) I heard Eddie had said it was the years of holding metal picks in his mouth that caused the cancer...despite the chain-smoking...go figure!! 2) Despite being proclaimed 'best guitarist in the world' 7 years in a row, being widely influential and many might regard him as their GOAT of electric guitar...he more recently still seemed to regard himself as primarily a 'pianist' (he and Alex where taught classical piano as kids in Holland). It always seemed obvious that his 'tapping' and classical style arpeggios, rife amongst his superb riffs and solos, were due to him attacking the guitar like a pianist. I think being trained in classical piano gives the advantage to play anything like EVH...for example Kanami from BAND-MAID also learned classical piano first (as did MISA and Akane) and she's pretty good at the old tappies...and a prolific riff-machine (a good example is 'Onset'...David already reacted). GREAT message man: "Kick The [shit] Sticks"...the past is the past and what seemed cool then (drink/drugs/booze) shouldn't be copied...RIP; EVH, Lemmy etc... I love this interview with Eddie where he talks about rock n roll 're-invention'... th-cam.com/video/yb26D8bBZB8/w-d-xo.html Peace mate!!
I've been binging on Van Halen - these are their best from the Sammy Hagar era: 5150, In 'n' Out, Runaround, Feels So Good, Judgement Day, Poundcake, Not Enough Extremely high energy. Honorary mention just for fun: Van Halen Amsterdam "Naughty Version"
The opening part of that solo was a small bit he calls "316" he came up with that when Wolfie was born. Hence the name "316" signifying Wolfgang Van Halen's date of birth. Consider that my little piece of "Red's useless trivia" just saying :). Great review my brutha !!! miss you tons man!🐔
No interest in watching a Eddie Van Halen guitar solo? Not even once? I’m a bit baffled and confused. You’d figure of all guitarists he’d be one to watch and listen.
Have you seen Buckethead tapping? He's the only one I'm aware of that uses all his fingers instead of just one or two on the right hand. The guy from Psyopus is also insanely good at it and has a few instrumental songs that show his skills off.
Cigarettes didn't kill Eddie Van Halen different kind of cancer got him but in the end he is the king all you have to do is watch and listen yes now that we older we really appreciate it Keep On Keepin On long live the king Eddie Van Halen wow what a journey what a talent God sent
Enjoyed this reaction , you explained a lot of things we had never been able to figure out & how he did this etc. I invite you to check out Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Boogie , Classical Gas & Stanley Jordans Style !!
I never heard one guitar player, not Satriani or Vai live, come close to getting Eddie's sound and tone......until the Taylor Hawkins tribute gigs.....Wolfgang, his son, came out.....and if you close your eyes its Eddie playing those songs. It is almost spooky....but so fitting. His debut album is killer too. Sounds nothing like his Dad.
i saw KISS on the creatures of the night tour with vinnie vincent... he comes out for his solo and plays eruption.. at the time i thought "what a hack"... can't even come up with an interesting solo of his own so he just rips eddie's solo. but then i realize that it can be difficult to create a 10 to 14 minute solo that is interesting and not just wanking. which gives me all that much more appreciation for what eddie created. vinnie was a good shredder...but... if that's all ya got..well it ain't good enough... gotta be musical as well.. gotta play something with feeling and emotion that can send the listener on a journey... which is exactly what eddie could do... his solos will always be a 10 for me cause they sound like songs but display such unreal technique... the benchmark for any good live solo...
One of the main reasons Vinnie Vincent was fired from KISS is because of his solos. He was given 5 minutes initially, and then he stretched it out to 6 minutes, then 7, then 8. Eventually he started going on for over 10 minutes. At one show he kept going after Gene and Paul both kept giving him the signal to wrap it up for over 2 minutes. Paul finally went out on stage, grabbed the mic, and said "Vinnie Vincent on lead guitar"...at which point Vinnie looked all confused and then pissed. He walked off stage, got in Gene's face, and screamed at him "Don't you EVER interrupt my solo spot like that ever again!!!" It was at that point both Gene and Paul knew it was time to part ways with Vinnie Vincent.
Every time I watch this, I think “Wow…this guy is an artist with his instrument.” My next thought is, “Oh shit…he’s gone.” Time is so unkind. To see him clown with the cigarette, you feel like yelling STOP, knowing what they did to him.
Bet you're kinda bummed you didn't watch that until now huh? Got to be the World's GREATEST friggin' SOLO EVER!!! Although there are a couple that could give him a run for his, 💵💲💰Like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and maybe another one or two. But EVH WAS definitely in a class ALL HIS OWN! RIP Eddie!
Lol! I use to have this on tape too. I actually thought you were Sammy Hager 🤔 going back stage and getting blown by groupies whilst Eddie did his solo and this is why you had to hear his solo for the first time... I can understand. ( this is somewhat true by the way)...😆
I know a gal who did exactly that when they came to Billings, Mt. Stinkiest, sweatiest bj she ever gave according to her. Did it during the drum solo to get a backstage pass for after the show.
Yeah, that's why Duff McKagan wrote the song It's So Easy... for the fact that he couldn't get no chick's slumming it but as soon as he got famous doing big shows they were everywhere...🤣🤣
I comment this on every eruption reaction but id love to think of Eddie & Hendrix upstairs shredding with dimebag; Michael jackson and Kurt Cobain on vocals and Jon Bonham and Keith moon on drums. Don't know about bass tho. Any ideas?
@@THEDavidHeretic I thought of him but truthfully idk bassists as well as other band members. They're usually the unsung quiet member behind the other three. There's also Malcolm young. He played bass and Angus leas guitar unless I'm completely wrong
It's funny that you would FF past this; I would FF past the Bass solo. Yes, I've seen it a few times, and it WAS entertaining but I didn't care for it musically. Of course, my favorite solo was Alex's. Specifically the overtone he would get at the end while playing the triple-stroke roll across the two perfectly tuned, electronic, floor toms. 🔥🤘🏽🔥 I wore out two VHS copies of this concert and now have it on DVD. 🤪😁
Because of making much more albums/cds; not as sad as Guns N Roses. But stiill sad that Van Halen members couldnt work out their disagreements. This band left a lot of gas in the tank & great music uncreated & unrecorded. Your right! Not fun watching my father who smoked 2-3 packs of Lucky Strikes daily wither away & die. (( Cancer is despicable. As a boy; in the summers I worked on my uncle's small farm. Tobacco was his money crop. My job was taking a hole & cultivating around each tobacco plant. Which were taller then me at the time & endless rows of. I hated that task & was very angry at my uncle. But after growing up & seeing people I knew lose their love ones to cancer; I realized he did me a favor. It caused me to hate tobacco products & never want to use. There was no peer pressure that could change my mind. In to many ways he was still a major asshole. But I thank him very very much for that.

2020 will not be remembered because of COVID ..it will always remind me that this is the year we lost Eddie Van Halen .BTW.. Meanstreets intro is my favorite EVH intro..EVH will never be duplicated ..replaced...it's just not humanly possible to emulate the man's talent..🤘✌️🖤🎸🎙️📀😎💫🎧🖤💋
Really loved this reaction you got my sub. You pointed out a lot of great things!!🙂
I saw a Documentary about Eddi. He said he opens up Amps and tampered with the Electronics and it blew regulary bleup and electrocuted him multiple times. He just wanted to find out new Sounds^^
Great reaction as usual, and amazing PSA regarding cigarettes.
Glad ya came around and listened to the G.O.A.T.
Awesome reaction
I saw Sammy when he warmed up for Boston's 2nd tour in Springfeild, Mass...
Love Ed, he was so great
Sounds like Dime may have written or performed the end of "Floods" to that part at 25:00
Good reaction ❤️
Thank God I got off the cigarettes back in 2005 after 27 years. I went cold turkey, just like when I quit drugs and alcohol in the 80's. It can be done it is a move i will Never Regret!
That's awesome Donald, keep it up!
Let’s all take a moment to realise he was drunk af during this and just played with such fucking perfection.. 👏👏
I didn't know about this solo UNTIL TH-cam lol so it's wild knowing I watched it like a decade before you lol
Love the psa man, I smoke. Enjoyed the post
The first guitarist I saw 'drumming' for want of a better word, his fingers on the back of the neck in conjunction with operating the tremolo arm up and down rhythmically was Jimi Hendrix during a performance on film, I can't remember the song.
"It's Van Halen but it isn't Van Halen."
Nope, it's Van Halen. The name of the band is taken from the brothers Alex (the eldest of the two) & Eddie Van Halen...Eddie doing the guitar & Alex doing the drums.
It *IS* Van Halen in the most true sense of the phrase.
😁
When you first mentioned seeing Eddie toss his pick into the audience...Paying attention, it's easy to see that he did that multiple times during the solo. I'm glad to have this time to show you what that is."
For instance, when you see him tapping with both hands up along the fingerboard, his hands are spaced apart just right to take advantage of the overlapping harmonic scales between different strings; he's using the harmonies of the instrument to play sequential notes faster than one hand can do...
During much of Van Halen's earliest gigs, Eddie couldn't even afford the foot pedals so he figured out how to make that kind of sound by just *play the guitar* itself; even during this concert & his solo, he wasn't even using foot pedals because *he never needed them.*
So, overall, in general, does Eddie make you a little more interested in listening to guitar solos than you have been up until now? Even just a little? Jimi Hendrix has done a lot with his guitar too, & others who "did their own thing" instead of trying to copy others. 🤗
If that is the Camp Crystal Lake, Run for your life, I have the same shirt. Awesomeness !!!!!!!
It is.
Amazing perspective .... Even though you've heard it .. would love to see your reaction on 5150 too (live without a net)
This guy is Psychotic...Love it!
He was exceptional..agree with you...
Just curious-who would you give a higher score to, for an actual guitar solo?
I've been binging on Van Halen - these are their best from the Sammy Hagar era:
5150, In 'n' Out, Runaround, Feels So Good, Judgement Day, Poundcake, Not Enough
Extremely high energy.
Honorary mention just for fun:
Van Halen Amsterdam "Naughty Version"
Like Yngwie Malmsteen he is the greatest guitar player in the world. Dear DH please add more Rammstein video)
R.I.P. Edward van Halen 🎸🔥🤘
The opening part of that solo was a small bit he calls "316" he came up with that when Wolfie was born. Hence the name "316" signifying Wolfgang Van Halen's date of birth. Consider that my little piece of "Red's useless trivia" just saying :). Great review my brutha !!! miss you tons man!🐔
Well this concert was before Wolf was born, so obviously the name came later.
No interest in watching a Eddie Van Halen guitar solo? Not even once? I’m a bit baffled and confused. You’d figure of all guitarists he’d be one to watch and listen.
Everyone has a way to explain everything he was doing. But he said he didn't know and we weren't alive when he couldn't explain it
The intro to "Mean Streets" sounds like a drum pattern played on guitar.
Have you seen Buckethead tapping? He's the only one I'm aware of that uses all his fingers instead of just one or two on the right hand. The guy from Psyopus is also insanely good at it and has a few instrumental songs that show his skills off.
The best ever 🤘
Eddie the Grandmaster :)
Van Halen - 5150
Extremely high energy.
I have my coffee and the Van Halen album now I want to drop the needle and crank it up to ……..11. 😆 🤘
Cigarettes didn't kill Eddie Van Halen different kind of cancer got him but in the end he is the king all you have to do is watch and listen yes now that we older we really appreciate it Keep On Keepin On long live the king Eddie Van Halen wow what a journey what a talent God sent
You sounded like santa! Loved it
🤘🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🏼
Yep 25:10. That sounds like a violin.
Every time I watch this, I think “Wow…this guy is an artist with his instrument.”
My next thought is, “Oh shit…he’s gone.” Time is so unkind.
Any ideas?
John Entwistle comes to mind.
@@THEDavidHeretic I thought of him but truthfully idk bassists as well as other band members. They're usually the unsung quiet member behind the other three. There's also Malcolm young. He played bass and Angus leas guitar unless I'm completely wrong
@@evanirvana500 Malcolm Young was actually the rhythm guitar player, Cliff Williams is the bassist for AC/DC.
@@THEDavidHeretic had a feeling I was wrong. Lol I only knew Angus with guitar with his knickers.
14:37 jesus i bet women loved that hand movement lol
It's funny that you would FF past this; I would FF past the Bass solo. Yes, I've seen it a few times, and it WAS entertaining but I didn't care for it musically.
Of course, my favorite solo was Alex's. Specifically the overtone he would get at the end while playing the triple-stroke roll across the two perfectly tuned, electronic, floor toms. 🔥🤘🏽🔥
I wore out two VHS copies of this concert and now have it on DVD. 🤪😁
Ha! Feeling old.
Living in paradise is my fav from him
Because of making much more albums/cds; not as sad as Guns N Roses.
How about Bata casets
Cancer had also mastastized to his back….and in the end, it was a stroke that was the final blow.
A+ and ill subscribe and like
Waiting for another lovebites reaction...
15:47 tough to copy a guitarist exactly, mainly because it's personality itself coming through those cables
like you said he is self taught, so no one ever said you shouldnt/cant do that
Way After Him
