Richard Raffan & Tomasic video's have helped me tremendously. Thanks
Awsome to hear that, thank you very much 🤗
Tomislave, your English is very good 🎉and more importantly your videos are amazing. I’ve learned so much from you as I only started wood turning a few weeks ago. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it’s priceless
Thank you very much
Great no-frills video Tomislav. My bench grinder was also vibrating until I discovered how to balance the wheel. I welded a small piece of flat bar onto the edge of the grinding wheel's washer. Slowly turn the wheel by hand, you'll notice the heavier part of the wheel always ends up at 6 o'clock. The modified washer is used to balance the grinding wheel. Best grinder upgrade ever!
Thank you for watching Dirk, I have to try that, but I'm on the market for new grinder, this one has great top part but the base is thin plastic and its rubbish, and loud,.... But it does the job once spooled up .... So for now I guess it needs to serve🤗 thank you for support 👍
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturninga lot of us have grinders like that so thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience 👌👍
I like your no nonsense approach. Thanks.
Thank you very much
Thank you. Looking forward to more workshop videos. Love the no nonsense approach 👌
Thank you very much, Simple is the best 👍
That’s some great information. This will be a keeper for me to save. Thanks for the posting.
Thank you for watching.... I'm glad you liked it and find usefull😀
Outstanding video Tomislav! I learned alot. Great tips throughout.
Awsome, glad I could help 😉
Thank you for sharing this beautiful and simple method of sharpenng. Your tip on using a very light touch was very much needed by me.
Thank you very much, glad I could help☺️
Great video it's always good to see how someone else tackles sharpening. Look forward to more workshop videos
Thank you very much 😀 Glad you liked it
Best wood turning tool sharpening video on TH-cam 👍. I have a combination of homemade and purchased tools and I sharpen very much like you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience 👌👍
Thank you very much for kind words 🤗 glad you liked it
You make it look easy.....all that is necessary is many years of practice.
Thank you, unfourtually that is part that cannot be skiped...
Another great video😀😀😀😃😃😃
Thank you very much 😀
Hello my friend,
you are using traditional knives. Sharpening them requires a separate skill. I use carbide tipped blades. Traditional knives for rough work. Thank you for this good information. All the best.
Thank you for watching and support 🤗
Puno fala Tomo ovo je bilo korisno! 😉
Drago mi je da je pomoglo.... Hvala 😀
Thanks for putting this together. I use my own method that I've figured out over the years, kind of a mish-mash of methods I've seen others use mixed with my own experiments and successes, but there are a couple of things in your way that I'm pretty sure will help. Got to try them out.
Thank you Randy , I'm glad you can get something out of it 🤗 I have been like yourself mismatch of every freehand method until stumble by accident this way of holding a gouge in hand..... A lot of steel was wasted but it was worth it🤗 what grind do you use?
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning For my bowl gouges I use an "Irish grind" that's somewhat modified. For the spindle gouges a basic fingernail grind. I use the Oneway jig but with a home made pivot and with a platform that I had for the grinder before I started turning. As I said, it's some of this and some of that.
I've never tried the asymetric grind that you and Richard use. Not sure if it would work better than what I use or if trying it would just use up even more steel than I've used learning what I use now. I'm a hobby turner so I'll likely stick with what I know.
@@randycosgrove3608 love the setup you got.... This turning market and hobby van get quite expensive.... Just stick to whatever works for you the best.... thank you once again for watching 🤗
А почему не охлаждаешь? Ты ведь режущую кромку жгешь?
No, light pressure and I don't burn an edge, if I have to reshape a edge then I would cool it every few seconds
Bonsoir Tomy, pourquoi elle affûtage de l aile gauche est-elle plus long que la droite 🧐merci 👍
Left wing is great for shaping wood where the short right wing is great for endgrain and hollowing....

I'm new to turning and always eager to learn better ways of doing things. My takeaway from your free-hand sharpening method is how much time it saves. Adjusting the damn jig to different tools takes more time than any other aspect of sharpening. I'm going to invest some time and tool steel trying it your way.
I agree With you.... For me jigs just wasn't an option..... There is platform sharpening that could be a bit easier to master in begining..... Grab an old gouge and practice.... I still messed up but I leave it like that beacuse next time I'll shrarpen it will be fixed and you learn how to get away with different mistakes..... And how it affects a cut.... Thank you for watching 🤗
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturningI much prefer free hand sharpening, I guess because I have sharpened drill bits free hand my whole life.
Me and my cheap grinder + CBN wheel: "wobble, wobble, wobble." I suppose I should look into shims now?
Same here, but without cbn....😂 I'm on the look for new grinder anyway
How you do when, as me, f***k up the geometry of the tool and you have no reference?
It hardly happens at this point but I make it worse before it gets better....
Few of my newer videos on sharpening will help out I hope
Imaš ti toga majstore na lageru. I zdjelica i strugača :)
Hvala ti, 380komada ali jos imam panjeva za nekih 100tinjak🤗
Super information, I'll come back to this video many times as my tool collection increases 😊
Please, how long does your average bowl gouge or spindle gouge last before needing replacing?
Thank you very much for watching and support what I do 🤗
Uff difficult to say, every gouge is different steel but on average around 8 months.... But I'm using them to the max,to the very bottom of the flute since I'm not using jig to sharpen... Also these day since I have a few gouges more I rotate them so they last up to a year....
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thanks for the reply, very good to know as I've been turning only for a year or so and have nothing to compare the metal usage to. I practiced quite a bit with free hand grinding, using more metal than normal, but now I'm getting it right. My first tools are wearing quick. 😬 (good excuse to buy more😁)
Your channel's great. I found you from the "4 ways" project with nice box making. Lovely stuff! I have lots of your vids to catch up on.
Cheers. Keep the videos coming 👍
@@fckmunch keep up with practice as its most important 🤗... Thank you very much for kind words and good luck😀
You are very talented. I tried to sharpen free hand, and it did not go as well as you show.
Thank you Matt, practice practice and more practice.... That is all.... Dont give up😉
Thanks a lot for the sharpening video. Very informative. A small question: - Everyone sharpens scrapers with an angle of 70, and you said that the angle is 45.Is that right? And why don't you use paper clips with double-sided sharpening?
Thank you Ivan for watching, its around 45 degress, but not Always the same, sometimes its 50-55....I'm not chasing certant angle..... I gotta say I'm not familiar with other part of the question 😀 not sure what paper clips are used for sharpening? Maybe you ment something else?
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning The translator fixed the scraper on a paper clip!!
Hello Tomislav. Can I ask? Is your short scraper with the nick ground out a re-used traditional chisel?
Regards
Martin
Hello Martin, thank you for watching 😀 it is indeed old two cherry or kirsner chisel.... It is over 30years old..... But does the job very well🤗
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Thank you. I have a Chisel in my Shed that may do the job!
@@25is27 if its a thin one, dont use it, mine is almost 10mm ,if its thin you'll get a lot of chatter and could broke....
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Ok. That makes sense. I think its too thin. I will keep my eye out at Flea markets and see what I can find. Thanks for the advice
