This reminds me of that time a guy flew a drone over a LARP like this to capture some drone footage of the LARP. A guy saw the drone, and without thinking (his own words), LAUNCHED HIS SPEAR AT IT AND _ACTUALLY TOOK THE DRONE DOWN WITH IT._ The guy immediately went, "oh shit, wait, that's someone's drone," and found the owner of it to apologize, but the owner said it was the coolest fucking thing he'd ever seen, and that it was on him for flying a drone through a medieval fantasy LARP.
Thing is, the drone footage survived, and it's the most bad ass shit _ever._ And now, that instance is literally a part of that LARP's lore. They have a _giant stone tablet_ that's been _hand carved_ to depict the soldier who threw his spear to take down the flying beast made of metal and dark magic. There's like a fucking festival in honor of the event every year in the LARP, too.
This shit is just _so fucking cool._

@@biyaogw2 In a land plagued by endless rain and muck, there lived a powerful wizard known as The Mud Wizard. He was feared and revered by the people of the land for his ability to control the mud and use it to his advantage.
The Mud Wizard used his powers to create vast, fertile fields for the people to grow their crops. He also used his powers to construct grand, towering castles and magnificent roads. The people of the land were grateful to the Mud Wizard and they praised him for his generosity.
But as time passed, The Mud Wizard became increasingly obsessed with his power. He began hoarding the mud, keeping it away from the people, and using it only for his own gain. The fields turned barren, the roads crumbled, and the castles began to sink into the muck.
The people of the land were outraged. They had trusted and praised the Mud Wizard, only to be betrayed by his greed. They banded together and decided to confront the Mud Wizard and demand that he return the mud to the land.
The Mud Wizard, however, refused to listen. He was too consumed by his obsession with power and wealth to see the destruction he had caused. The people, seeing no other choice, banded together and used their combined strength to overthrow the Mud Wizard and take back control of the mud.
With the Mud Wizard defeated, the people of the land were able to restore the fields to their former fertility, repair the roads and the castles, and once again live in harmony with the land. The Mud Wizard, consumed by his own greed, was left to wander the land, a lonely and bitter figure, a reminder of the dangers of power and obsession.

Concerning conquistadores, muskets and generally gunpowder: There is a very useful practice in place at this kind of Larp.
If someone is no fun to play with (and fighting is an aspect of playing) - avoid playing with them.
So if you play a character with well visible gunpowder weaponry, it is in your own interest to play your gun a bit ineffective with single shots and long reload times and no long range or hidden sharpshooting.
You should be prepared that not everyone will react to you shooting at them - and that is just fine.
Because almost none is going to begin a fight with you unless they are ready to play with your type of weaponry. If they do, they probably have e great scene in mind as in 3:30 when the Spießhaufen frontally attacks the blue soldiers just for the whole front rows to be stricken down by their volley. Because that's fun! And it is not in you power to demand this from anyone.
If you act like a jerk breaking the balance of fun, people will avoid playing with you. People from your camp will be having a talk with you. And if you still don't get it, your application for your camp will be dismissed the next year. Easy as that.

    • @ivyr336
      @ivyr336 ปีที่แล้ว

Couldn't you even use blanks? Or for these types of weapons, just blackpowder. No bullet.
Or perhaps there is even something that is safer. Since blackpowder could burn you point blank.

    • @sebastians.4891
      @sebastians.4891 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@ivyr336 At Epic Empires blanks are a bit tricky since blackpowder regulations are peculiar in Germany and "fireworks" are not allowed on the event location because of staying on good terms with the neighbours.
But even with them: Blanks do just indicate that you shoot. Nice for ambience and show. But you are still in the hands of the "unspoken fun contract" regarding a reaction to this shot from other players.
So, even with blanks, in order to "hit" someone you have to make them see you and your weapon, communicate through actions or even shouting something like "I'm gonna put a hole in you, arrogant pointy-ears!" that you indeed want to shoot at them and while doing this communicating that you are cool and this would be fun or a good scene.
And then it is up to your target to decide:
If it was a hit at all, just a graze, if the armour held the bullet even when playing impact, if it was just a hit of the hat but they decide to shit their pants and retreat from this mighty boomstick, if they got hit in the leg and shout for their friends to help and kill that sniper over there...
There are so many possibilities to generate play and fun. But as someone with this kind of weapon, you always rely on your fellow players to play your gun. And by this you will never be overpowered, In fact you will in contrast to melee fighters probably end up a bit frustrated at first.

Fist and foremost, keep in mind that these are European larpers. It's more of a lifestyle than a hobby over there.
The dudes with muskets get a pass because those larp-safe muskets are about as accurate as the real thing and take about as long to reload.
The easiest way to explain larping to the normals is that a few nerds quantified and wrote down their rules for playing pretend then invited other people to join them.
Officials will still use phones. That's kind of given. She meant that you won't see any players sitting around doom scrolling. I make a good point to leave my phone in my tent with the rest of my out-of-play stuff.
Around 19:30, what you're talking about is reenactments, and those dudes hate being called larpers. Though I've never heard of any that go for a revisionist history. They strive for historical accuracy and reenact battles as they were fought, and the Confederacy did win a few battles. There are many larps here in the states that cross a wide range of genres. The only hang up is that you can't exactly go pick up a rulebook from the local game store. You have to seek them out, and possibly travel a good bit. The most widespread games in the states are Solar and Nero which are fantasy games that are unfortunately dying out due to lack of interests and many other out-of-play issues, Dystopia Rising which is a post-apocalyptic setting where you can use NERF guns, Vampire: The Masquerade is a parlor game that doesn't have a lot of combat and focuses more on player interactions, and then there's battle sports like Amtgard and Dagorhir. I am reluctant to call them larps because the only roleplay is "We don't like the guys on that side of the field because we're on this side of the field," but they have chapters in every major city like a nerd fight club.
The rest are usually organized by smaller groups to fill a need in their area. Like where I live, the closest Nero and Solar groups are 4-6hrs away, so some guys that played both took the rules they liked, amended the ones they didn't, and added a few new ones to create their own game that people travel from all over to enjoy.
This game doesn't allow kids because of the alcohol, violence, and other mature content. It's also a MAJOR liability having kids run around the battlefield on the scale they are playing at. A parent can't keep an eye on they all the time, they could easily be crushed by some 200lb adult in around 30-55lbs of armor. Especially with them allowing full-content fighting. Very seldom is it because of anything sexual. Most, if not all, games forbid it for some pretty obvious reasons. The main one being "Women don't like creeps, and if there are no women no one's gonna want to come to play." It's very hard to get new players to join if you can't make your game a safe space, and having a lot of female players is a good way of showing that.

7:12 actually gunpowder guns are more on the "underpowered" side. These are all "muzzle loaded guns". So loading takes quite some time, compared with putting an arrow on your bow string. Some of them fire nerf darts, so the range is quite limited, compared to bows and crossbows. Some do not shoot a projectile, so you rely on the good will of your "enemie" to act like you hit him - and that only works if he saw you firing at him in the first place. So, while being the most powerfull handheld ranged wepons there in theory, if you would play to win (something that has no place at the Epic Empires) a squad of trained bowman would take on a squad of musketeers at any time.

This defiantly looks like the kind of place where people drink beer and met from horns and people give you "potions" that are simply the most stomach melting moonshine schnapps they could fabricate in their garage. At least that’s what I experienced at a medieval market/ festival last year. Good times.

Did a few of these when I was younger. Lots of cool memories. Quality varies a lot obviously depending on the organizer and a ton of other factors, but if it's good it's fantastic. Crowds aren't as nerdy as you might expect as LARPS are a little too social, practical and hands on to draw the most awkward people. Excellent reason to get out there and mingle. Projects go on for months even the whole year before they kick off. Do a wide variety of handicrafts, music, make friends, flirt, practice fighting, plot and tell stories, do theatre, acting and on and on. Highly recommend trying it out if you you haven't already and have the opportunity.
I remember one of my favourite ones, it took place in a forest about an hours hike from the nearest infrastructure. I spent 2 weeks there living this fantasy setting, and while I was there, "Barbie Girl" had become a hit and I heard it in a parking lot as we were about to head home. I said: let's go back into the forest.

Been there (I'm actually in Sonjas video), so I can tell you about the guns: It's totally not overpowered, it's the opposite. First off, there is a tech barrier mandated by the organizers, and it's 1815. That's why you see 18th century or Napoleonic uniforms and weapons but nothing more modern. This also means, the most modern firearms are muzzle loaders.
    - Usually, you get one shot. And you're dependent on your opposite to honour it (as they usually shoot without projectile, sometimes nerf), so he needs to see you shooting.
    - The others may have bows and crossbows, which you don't need to see to know when you're hit, which thus have a range of 20-30 metres.
    - And being more medieval, they have armour. Sometimes a lot.
    - And bayonets are not really working (we will try, next year), but the others have halberds.
So basically everyone with a musket knows he's probably going to loose. Because, you know "with halberds you get shit done".

We would fight to capture flags, roleplay, bake medieval things, build armor pieces, and at the end of each half school year, we went to a large, official convention as a group. Only downside: Larp gear is expensive as hell!

There's a reason a lot of German Mass Larps are organized along the French border:
The French Larp community has been decimated by a combination of bad actors scamming associations into accepting extra insurance fees against online visibility, and local law-makers banning minors from the associative world, to ensure the slow death of every amateur group activity.
Many of the older French Larpers prefer crossing the border to find a healthy and safe gaming environment, and avoid getting kicked out of a private property by nervous French police thinking you're starting a rave or some kind of hippie commune. I know of people who ended up on a government watch list because they have swords and game books.
The disengagement became so bad that in many French medieval festivals, even the pop-up tavern and the ticket booth are now speaking German.

9:32 a bit late to the party, but ive been at the epic empires once and at similar big german larp events from 2009 onward.
guns would be really powerfull indeed. but its hard to portray a real shot if you compare it to a hit with a sword.
you can throw a lightning bolt, by throwing a soft ball or similar prop to simulate the flight path and see whats being hit.
but you also have to sell it by incanting some sort of latin magical spell, begging the elements for help or what not.
ive seen an orc using single packed tampons as ammunition for a blowdart, which was a cool idea, but theres still the risk of
hitting someone in the eye (also imagine that field from the video littered with hundrets of tampons).
so in my larping experience, getting shot at with a gun is treated more like being hit with a really strong gust of wind that knocks you away
and to the ground instead of a bullet wound (even though you could walk over to a healer and have them act like they remove a projectile).
there is a difference between smaller handguns like the ones a pirate would use and someone actually bringing a musket prop.
not to mention facing a ships crew of around 20 people, all simultaneously aiming their rifles at you.
when you get shot at, its your job to act accordingly. so if its a single guy with a gun, you stumble back a few metres, yell out in pain and drop to a knee.
but if its the crew, its still technically a strong windblast hitting you. but youd most probably just stay down as that should be fatal.

As someone who has done a few LARPS in France I can say it's pretty much the same here as well. The rules are also in most cases the same, they all copied their predecessors and added a few twists. For those that are curious here's a bit of info on that as well as "guns" in a medieval larp:
    - You need an immersive costume, most places don't judge that much so even the cheap pirate outfit they showed as a bad example in the beginning is fine in most places. Also most people ignore shoes as it's actually hard to find good ones that don't cost hundreds euros. I started of with some leather boots and as time went on I just got some black shoes that don't look so modern.
    - You need larp weapons if you want to fight. They need to be professional quality foam weapons, either you know your stuff (rigid carbon/plexi core + foam + silicone coating with paint) or you can just buy one, prices literally go from 50 to 300 euros on those and you can also find good second hand ones and there are always merchants on big events that sell them.
    - You make a player character with a certain number of XP (increases with every consecutive year you visit), you spend XP on additional hit points or skills that enable you to do stuff ingame. For example if you have a harvesting skill you can harvest ingame resource nodes and get items, if you have an evasion skill, you can once per combat say "evaded" to someone who managed to hit you and ignore the damage he did.
    - Everyone is supposed to in good faith play out announcements, if someone does a certain action and tells you a keyword such as "stunned", you are supposed to (if its a valid keyword in the rulebook) to play it out and act as if you were stunned as the one who announced it is supposed to have a skill that enables him/her to do that.
    - Combat is simple, if you hit someone with your weapon anywhere other then a shield or another weapon, they lose 1 or more HP depending on the weapon. You start of with a certain amount of HP (1 or 2) and you can buy more with XP. Armor adds armor points that are basically HP and the amount of AP you have is decided by what you are wearing right now. Leather adds something like 2 and plate or anything that realistically looks like plate (super realistic foam/latex or plastic) adds something like 3.
    - One handed weapons do 1 damage, 2 handed weapons do 2 damage and most projectile weapons also do 1. If for any reason you hits do more then 1 damage you're supposed to yell the number as you hit someone like with a 2 handed weapon as you hit you'd yell "Two!".
    - A broad array of ranged weapons are usually allowed (depending on the larp) but usually its arrows, crossbows bolts or throwing weapons. Most guns are very low tech, they either need a huge time to reload and do only the standard of 1 damage or they do non at all but are able to stun an enemy and make them fall on the ground (yes they have to really fall over like a panda).
    - Cheating is heavily frowned upon and if you get caught or a lot of people report you, the GMs can either impose heavy penalties on you or outright ban you form the event. There was one whole faction that was banned from using a very crucial combat skill for a whole year (2-3 events) because a lot of people in their faction were reported cheating in many battles.
    Hope this was helpful :)

To be honest, I'm a LARP player from Germany, and I've never heard of 'Epic Empires.' However, we do have dozens of small LARP events throughout the year. The largest ones I know of are 'Drachenfest' and 'Mythodea,' with 'Drachenfest' attracting around 5,000-7,000 participants and 'Mythodea' hosting 7,000-10,000 participants over several days. I just learned that 'Epic Empires' only attracts around 1,500 to 2,000 participants.
And I don't know how it is today, but ten years ago, children were running around there without any problems. They were obviously not allowed to participate in the fights, but they could take part in the camp and city life.

I'm not sure if it is still standing, but in Bavaria there was "Pullman city", which literally was a reenactment location for old west events. You even could enter for free, if you wore historically accurate attire.

Some people are just too stupid to grasp the concept of just having fun for the sake of it and not letting your inner child die, just to seem "Professional" and "adult", acting as if all you are allowed to do is working your ass of for some company not giving a fuck about your well being and then proceeding to drink your sorrows away, before repeating the cycle.

Musket Guns aren't really OP in a roleplay standpoint, the reason guns are so effective in real life is a culmination of several things; the deafening blast, the sight of your teammates falling around you after a volley. A moments' hesitation can be the difference between life and death on a real battlefield, in roleplay its like ahh man I got shot, guess thats 50 hit points gone.

    • @richardcorvo3677

also don't forget the fact that muskets were known for being very inaccurate.

Drachenfest is another german one that has over 5000 visitors. I do recommend non-fantasy LARPs like the NordicLARPing that do Cthulhu inspired or even Scifi (The Monitor Celestra is an incredible event from over 10 years ago utilizing old army boats and u-boats as dystopian space ship interiors), also post apocalyptic events like Blodsband or even the alternative reality game that was The Truth About Marika that built on prior LARPs about urban magick and myths and won an actual Emmy Award in 2008.

iv'e attended a couple larp events years ago , first as NPC and then as my own character and it's really alot of fun. its a great way to make friends who have similar interests & are into geeky stuff.
sometimes its tough to get into the events though because of the rules are amount of people who sign up. However if u have a solid character and a good costume then u should be fin. also NEVER go to larp events where they do allow kids. kids ruin the immersion alot. If you never been to a event i would recommend signing up as a NPC first, its a great way to get introduced and see how the event goes.

It's so weird to see this as I've been to this event many times and know a lot of people in there. Your reaction was really cool and respectful but some of the comments on stream didn't pass the vibe check. Criticism is ok but there are some ppl who literally segsualize every pretty woman on the video, like how old are oyu 14?
It reminded me why I'm happy that there are usually (almost) no videos of the events. You can really let yourself go in the game without having to fear the judgement or segsualization from random creeps on the internet.

About the guns. I'm pretty sure that they have implemented major drawbacks like loading speed and max ammo to balance them out. A Gun is worth nothing in this setting, if you're not in a tight formation and coordinated, when the others can just charge you after the first volley.

a friend of mine is in a Clan of Vikings who Participate in ummm... Middleage Events. Everything they wear is handmade by themselves, they have real weapons (not sharpened of course) and they fight like hell. Bruises are normal and broken bones happen too every now and then. Their ex-leader even lost an eye because someone didn't follow the fighting rules.

At this point, I just assume if there’s guns in a fantasy setting and not everyone is using them, it means that the general power level of the melee fighters is high enough that guns don’t make as big an impact

the flintlocks are not a big problem there are no dmg numbers (dmg is normalized per hit), you´ll die after a certain amount of hits so the reload of a flintlock is much worse than that of a bow. so bow is much more op than a flintlock

Stonepistols, Muskets and all are okay... the loadingtime and all are a counterweight to the Power of "BANG!". If the lines are close the shooting stops too... pretty funny is if there a Shieldwall you storm but last second before impact a shield opens and a thundergun/musket look out and shoot you before the Shield close again and the fight starts. Fucking epic.
