  • A video thought to be long lost and rescued from the clutches of a severely failing hard drive; this was recorded something approaching three years ago.
Overall not a bad camcorder, but the word heavy is a major understatement. Even resting this thing on your shoulder might leave you with back problems.

People discount these cameras, as you see they are actually fantastic! I own several full size VHS cameras. Let me touch on some items you mentioned.
    * Cameras in general are blind and require lots of light, cameras today are just starting to improve on that factor, but still requires bright light, I would get into the mechanics more but I don't wanna get to deep on geek talk. * Low speed shutter will be 1/60th which is normal on consumer grade cameras. * The old cold shoe on these cameras were not designed for a shotgun mic, even though one would mount. They were designed for a light, most lights had a riser which stood the light above the handle as you want your light at a 45 degree angle of your subject. External mics were generally a handheld mic or lavalier.
    * The lens is big because the sensor is big, back then we really didn't have tiny sensor, at the time of production of this camera (1989) we were just getting out of tube sensors such as Vidicon, etc. Consumer grade cameras required lots of light. * That strange lens has nothing to do with the viewfinder, cameras work on contrast focusing which means it focuses on the differences of lighting, this strange lens is the camera's focusing lens. Modern cameras work on TTL focusing (Through The Lens), meaning it focuses through the lens itself, you will see cameras of different vintages that will have little sensors on the body, that deals with focusing .
    * These old cameras are called "shoulder mount" cameras, if you have pain or discomfort from holding them, then your holding it wrong, albeit, they will still cause some discomfort. You need to have the butt rested on your shoulder and the eyepiece flush against your eye, your arms are not to flay out like a chicken but held close and firm to your body, this is called "3 point stabilization".
    * The full auto light advises you that you are indeed in full auto, this means once your into its basic manual mode it should turn off, however, since I have never played with this camera, you book is your best friend on this topic.
    * The DIN from the view finder popped out for the simple reason, you can hook up a character generator via this plug and welp, add your own titles as well as dubbing from one machine to another.
    * The date and time is a easter egg, most none camera geeks, may not know this factoid nugget, but the date generally will tell you the year of manufacture! In this case, it was 1989, it sold by the way for $1200.
Hope some of this unrequested info solves some dilemmas for you! :) ~ I Am The Self Proclaimed Camera King - Jack, VEG

This is the exact camera I had when I was younger! There was an old lady that lived across the street since the street was built, hers was the second house built on the block.
She moved away and a new couple (with a strained relationship) moved in, they had delusions of grandeur about their plans with the house. Anyway their relationship never really get much better, but one day myself and the gentleman were talking and "cameras" was the subject at hand. It was around 1996 or 1997, I can't remember which, but he said he had a full-size VHS camera he didn't want anymore. He just gave it to me, I tried to offer him money but he wouldn't accept.
Mine came complete, even including the hard "suitcase" to lug it around. The onboard character generator never worked, it would always display garbage on the viewfinder, but the rest of the camera worked. I actually managed to find replacement batteries for it (back then), though I had to drive about 30 miles to get one.
One interesting feature not covered in your review was the "interval" feature, where it records for 1 second every 30 seconds, giving a sort of time-lapse approach. You can get some really interesting effects with that mode if you just set the camera up to record and go about your business.
In time, the battery charger stopped working, eventually not even sending power to the camera over the DC-in cable, but any 12 volt supply with the correct plug will power it. The belts in mine have perished after the years spent in my dad's non-air-conditioned house. I also seemed to have misplaced the A/V cable after all these years. Do you have any idea what the part number of it is, or where I could possibly obtain one?

My BVP-E10/PVV-3 and BVP-950/BVV-5 dockable system cameras with Betacam SP dockable VCRs are pretty nice combination units, too bad they're strictly 4:3 and I have literally no way to get the video signal output from the decks without a playback adapter (i.e. VA-300, VA-500) to get composite (CVBS) or separate (Y/C) video signals output to my TV. I can only watch my recorded footage via a monochrome viewfinder, which blows balls. Even if I had a color viewfinder, it wouldn't make a difference because the VCR will only output color via a playback adapter connector.

That second lens below the main one is for the autofocus system, as it was made before "through the lens" (TTL) autofocus became common. The video and audio quality are about the same as my 1994 Sharp Slimcam, which as its name suggests has the advantage of being quite a bit slimmer and lighter than most other full-size VHS camcorders.

The "lens" on the bottom is likely for the auto focus system.

Even the best that the 1990s had to offer was pretty lackluster, but it's still a good effort.

This video was really nostalgic for me since my parents used this camera to film me and my sister when we were young. Now my cousin's kid is asking about it so I dug it out of my mom's basement. It's crazy how foreign this kind of tech must seem to someone born in the smartphone age.

I own the Sharp VL-L270C - I'm assuming the C stands for Canadian and your U is for the US. Anyways came across your video after taking mine out of storage to see if it still works.
No problem still records. bulky but worth saving :)

I bought one at goodwill for $20 a few years ago. Have no idea if it works and was thinking about tossing it, but seeing the footage and the interest of these things, I might hold on to it 🙂
