    The Pink/Yellow combo works because: The yellow visually mixes with the pink to create an orange tone, the white in the pink keeps the visual brightness of the yellow :)
    If you use a Cerulean Blue / Aqua blue mixed with a white as the shade instead of the pink, you will get a cool yellow instead as the blue will visually mix with the yellow and make a cool green.
    Great paint job by the way, looks as amazeballs as ever!

      Yellow pigments have a tendency to go towards olive green in shades. Red and green are complementary colors, and the reddish foundation helps to filter out the greenish tendencies of the yellow pigment on top, keeping the shadows in the orange range.

      It will be a really long time before 3D printing replaces plastic casting.
      3D printing is a lot of work. I've printed thousands of points so far with my photon but in the time it's taken me to do it I could of earned enough by working at McDonalds to buy 10x as much from GW.

      @@GoobertownHobbies You really should , they have gotten so cheap now ( I purchased a longer orange 10 for 343 AUD ) . Mind numbingly simple to use compared to an FDM printer ( been printing FDM for a while ) . I went in blind and the first mini I printed on it came out perfect ( a warhammer 40k undead guy who I thought would look cool in DnD). I literally spent 5 minutes figuring how to use the slicer and printed it .

    Seriously though these look great. At least on par with Reaper Bones, if not better. It's an interesting paradigm shift and I'm curious how this will affect the miniatures industry! I certainly don't want companies like Reaper or even Games Workshop to suffer in any way from this development. But I also don't want weird IP lawsuits over 3d printed Space Marines.

    "So I'm really hope I don't embarrass myself with these Lizard Folk" you didn't, but in my opinion the most important part of miniature youtube videos is for us to be able to relate to the material and results.
    I suppose it could sound like a backhanded insult, but it's not meant like it, your miniatures look great and after watching your videos I feel like I can do something similar.
    Squidmar on the other hand, I can't really relate to at all, he's like a fish in water with this. I don't know if he was taught as a kid or has talent for picking up painting techniques, but I feel like his results are way out of my reach.
    I'm really glad that the community is starting to notice 3D printed miniatures, I'm really looking forwards to how it'll expand. I'm not ashamed to say that I'd use it for the occasional "recast" and I have plenty of ways of excusing it, but simply put I think it might force at least a certain company to rethink its pricing tactics and maybe start being more reasonable or suffer from its own inability to adapt.
    I don't mean to be mean and I'm glad that their company can hire and keep its employees the way they do, but prices are way beyond the point of being prohibitive, which is why anyone who is serious is already buying so many used minis.
    Anyway, sorry to rant Brent, just wanted to say that I personally enjoy what you do a lot.

    Pink works well in the shadows because it's colder than the yellow. A lot of people just add black to their main colour to make a shadows, but that just desaturates the colour. Making shadows colder and highlights warmer really makes models pop

  • @beasticorn
    @beasticorn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the yellow and pink thing. When applying any paint over a white and black under coat, you are building up the color layers on a grey scale gradient. This desaturates the color. Apply it over another saturated color like pink keeps the saturation, and since they are very close to opposites on the color wheel they make a dark color. you could use other colors but they might not compliment each other as much. the same rule goes for mixing paints for highlights and shadows, if you just use black and white for the respective shades you will loose the saturation of the colors and your over all piece moves closer towards grey.

    The resin 3d printers really are outstanding when it comes to minis. The details my friend and I have got with the printer makes it well worth it. about the yellow and pink thing I know nothing about color theory, but if you look at nature, like leopard geckos for instance. they kind of have a pink undertone and they're yellow? So maybe it looks good because you actually see them together in rl?

    So darker areas tend to have a higher saturation so the red undertone shows through in the low lights and a more pure yellow shows where the light's hitting. It makes the scales look organic and layered instead of like a flat colour with some shading. I also think it has something to do with how colour bounces maybe? Idk. All i know is that you dont shade with the same tone but darker

I love the green one, and at first, didn't like the orange. But when I saw the finished product, it looks amazing. I'm off to check out Lukes APS and 3D Printed Tabletop. I used to play 40k back in the day, but my passion was painting and making scenery.
    I recently thought about starting up again, went into my local games workshop store, had a quick look around, and quickly walked again!
    The prices were astronomical!!
    And these days most mini's are plastic.
    And the tools prices were crazy as well.
    I seriously could not believe how expensive my old hobby had become.
    Quite saddened actually, obviously popularity breeds greed!
    I now buy preowned, semi painted minis, ive found some real bargains, and have amassed a very healthy bits box this way.

    I mentioned this in a comment on Squidmar - historically the layer lines and rough surface textures really turned me off of 3D printed minis (along with soft details). But if those things are in the past, I'll be really interested to try painting these! I'd just need to figure out the best printer/material to achieve this quality. I'm also curious how long they take to print.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me too! Both of us love using washes, and layer lines would just instantly sabotage that technique. I've gotta start paying more attention to these 3d printing channels!

    Color theory time! So from art classes we know that mixing yellow and red creates orange, offering nice shadow on yellow surface. So, why use pink instead of something like red? Yellow as paint is not exactly most covering of colors, and as such, putting yellow over red would not create this smooth blend from red to orange and yellow, just brighter red. Pink meanwhile has white in it, not yellow. Thin layer of yellow tints the red on pink, creating smooth orange hue to the pink areas, and human eye sees this as light orange.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      THANK YOU! This makes a lot of sense. Miniac's recent funko-pop imperial fist video was interesting because he shaded with red and the red overwhelmed the yellow. I guess that pink as a shade is able to make a smoother blend and get that bright orange. Very cool stuff :-)
