Another great clip! I remember having this on VHS and watching this over and over. The Captain And Tennille also performed the excellent "This Is Not The First Time" on this episode.
Dionne Warwick and Toni Tennille harmonized well with this female duet version of "Shop Around" from early during season 1 of "Solid Gold". The song originally had been the breakout hit in 1960 for Smokey Robinson And The Miracles. The Captain & Tennille version, released in 1976, had some of the lyrics reworked to fit a female singer. Interestingly, Toni had a nationally syndicated television series that had a 1979 pilot and went into regular series production in September 1980 through February 1981. The Captain & Tennille were mainstays of easy listening radio from the mid-1970s through the 1980s. "Love Will Keep Us Together" had originated with a 1973 version by Neil Sedaka, but The Captain & Tennille made it a Grammy-winning megahit from 1975. Their first foray into music that became known to some audiences was "I want To Touch You", which they self-produced in 1973. That got them noticed by A & M Records and their first hit, "Love Will Keep Us Together" soared to the top of the charts. That must have been something, Michael, to have met Toni while she was marketing their first record and then be able to know that you were introduced to her before she made the big time as The Captain & Tennille, with Daryl Dragon as The Captain. They were one of a small number of married couples that had a duet act in professional music. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. come to mind, but it is a rare phenomenon, but phenomenon it is. Dionne and Toni really made "Shop Around" in their own style in this performance. An anecdotal story is that one of the sisters of Toni Tennille had been a longtime schoolteacher at a public elementary school in Torrance, a large suburb of Los Angeles. The local newspaper ran a story on that many years ago, complete with photographs. That was during the late 1990s or early 2000s era. The video clip uploaded here is like a time capsule from 1980, over 43 years ago, already.
I’m glad you enjoyed this clip of the duet I put together for Dionne and Toni. And, another bit of trivia to add is that Tony’s talkshow was taped in the same building where we taped Solid Gold at KTLA that year.
@@bigeyezzzzzzzThank you for that information that KTLA is where the Toni Tennille talk show had been taped for its national distribution. KTLA-TV Channel 5 has a lot of history, both local and national, so it is not surprising that their studios were used for the first 4 seasons of "Solid Gold" and the Toni Tennille talk show as well. KTLA-TV is the only Los Angeles television station to have not changed its call letters since going on the air as a commercially-licensed television station. It was the first commercial television station in Los Angeles, having first gone on the air on January 22, 1947. It holds the distinction of the only major commercial Los Angeles television station to remain in the Los Angeles district of Hollywood, while many others moved to studios elsewhere in the Los Angeles region. "Solid Gold" is, therefore, part of the heritage of that studio as well are the other television programs, local and national, to have been broadcast from the famous KTLA-TV Channel 5. I am old enough to remember it as having begun as an independent station, having been part of the old Dumont network, later owned by Gene Autry as part of his Golden West Broadcasters, then Tribune Television, a WB network affiliate, and currently the CW network and owned by Nexstar Communications. Paramount Studios had a part ownership, I believe, in their very early years and much later on Paramount created "Solid Gold", along with so many other television series, especially sitcoms and, of course, theatrical movie releases.

Great performance!
A classic!
Wow so many years ago! Thank you for the upload!
