Such good memories. Our family had the 19 inch version of this "portable" for many years. It even had the circle with the "19." High hours for sure because it lasted forever. We watched and had it repaired until the wheels fell off, and my father brought home our first color TV circa 1976 when I graduated high school. When you were monkeying with the set, i was screaming at my phone, "Jiggle the channel tuner!!!" . We went through many different size and shape knobs for the tuner. And the rolling vertical brought back memories of me having to monkey with the vertical control knob behind the set while my face was plastered close to the screen in order to watch anything. I love the admiral brand. I bought my house in 1998, and the house came with an "Admiral Food Locker" 18.5 cu ft NT19L9 refrigerator that is still going strong 27 years later in 2024. I did replace the (mechanical) defroster timer and had to defrost an iceberg once. My wife keeps saying she wants a new fridge but nothing is broken not even the plastic inside.

@8:32 - Not completing your sentences - that's the kind of stream of conscious rapport that I have come to enjoy so much. That's the very same reason that I used to enjoy listening to Michael Savage back in his early days. Rapid-fire banter that often let the listener subconsciously fill in the missing words. I hope you don't change that aspect of your productions.

I love watching these TV videos. I've been working on televisions, both flat panels and tube televisions, I'm working on, (I put a video up about it) that already have parted out, it was making a "ticking noise" it's a Rear-Projection 55" it was working for years. I'm not getting rid of it, I know the tubes (3 separate tubes) still fire, the speakers work, the wood it's cased in, I call it "pinball wood. If you view the video you can see the main power board, the flyback, or a relay was making the ticking noise.

You can make a very good nite light if you take a regular LED bulb (make sure it's a capacitive dropper instead of the electronic ones), Remove all the bleed resistors (like the ~1Meg across the input series cap, and the ~10k across the main filter cap). Then replace the input series cap from the ~1uF value to around 10nF to 47nF... It draws around 0.05W and is much brighter than the neon ones which draw closer to 0.25W

Mr. Carlson did a video like this not long ago. It got me excited because he doesn't normally fix TVs.
It turned out to be a disappointment because he too selected a TV that didn't have anything wrong with it.
Friends don't let friends make repair videos about stuff that doesn't need to be repaired.
I liked the neon lamp segment; however, you could have padded this out a little more.
For example, test the picture tube so we can see what a working but high hour picture tube looks like on a tester. Then put a brightener on it so we can see what difference doing that makes. Stuff like that.
We wait a week for a video, you got to give us something with a little meat left on the bone.

It's a "wow" find... It looks like a very tortured, unused for long set and it lights up, perfect geometry, obviously the IF is in a perfect shape, because vertical resolution is really good, everything is sharp. The only obvious issue is that circuitry (capacitor) that shuts off the crt glow after turning the set off.
By the way, the neon bulbs at the end were used everywhere. For instance, they were used as indicators of the selected channel in old Russian hybrid color TVs from late 70s and 80s. The strange thing about them was that they were not only indicators, they were also part of the memory circuitry that retains the selected channel after pushing the corresponding channel. One model that used that circuitry for a channel selector was Electron 738D (Электрон-738Д), a monstrous hybrid color set with which I grew up, produced in 1983 and it was used for 22 years.

Have you ever done a video of how a TV or radio actually functions? I understand a lot of the diagnosis that you do but I'm lacking in understanding of how a signal gets transformed into picture or sound

    • @KofolaDealer
      @KofolaDealer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

You have a carrier frequency that carries the modulated signal that then gets amplified and demodulated in the radio/television. Image in televisions works the same way as AM radio. To put it VERY simply if we had a signal level from 1 to 11, 1 would be white, 10 would be black and 11 would be a sync pulse (darker than black so it wouldn't show up on the television screen) which tells the electron beam to move to the next line or start drawing the next frame. I might be wrong but that's how I understand it. Also fun fact it takes 64microseconds for the TV to draw one line (63.55 for NTSC)

Hey Shango, please don’t invest in a tripod. There are plenty of channels on TH-cam where someone positions the camera three feet away and proceeds to work for an hour, it’s horribly boring… I like that you do close ups of the parts in question and occasional do ultra close close ups of cracked solder joints etc. Your camera work isn’t too jittery and I prefer the way you film your videos. Just my two cents…

WEF is frightening right now. A lot of things that are happening in my country that harm the population and make zero sense.

Focus is based on the voltages on the anode as well as the focus electrode (or focus coil current on older sets). If there's a large dot it means the focus voltage/current has been lost but there's still HV on the anode.

@@eDoc2020 Seems to be more common with older high hour CRTs. The horizontal and vertical deflection circuits collapse first as the capacitors in those higher power circuits drain, and the beam goes to the center. The cathode and heater are still hot and emitting electrons for a time.

It's a shame we don't have the glowing tubes, weird noises, and strange interference influencing science fiction anymore....

when I was a kid my father's girlfriend and I couldn't decide what to watch so she threw the tv across the room. It no longer worked. I opened it up and found tubes fell out so I put them back in and it worked again.
