They could do all of those flashy animations, even the devs said it themselves, tho it affects the client overall and people are already pissed about the current client so we can’t really blame them for not being able to put these cool animations in
The lack of animations is due to laziness and corner cutting. I just about threw up when i realised that not only is the client years old, but is just HTML wrapped in a client window. HTML is incredibly diverse and lightweight. But there is a reason why when developing heftier websites people use a number of languages each specialising in a particular aspect. The reason the shop, inventory and profile screens always mess up is that you are basically loading a website inside the client everytime you open that tab. It is slow, buggy, and tempermental compared to normal selection screens. Animations cant be integrated because that would require a rewrite of the entire client into a more stable and robust environment. That costs money, Riot gains nothing from remaking the client since people begrudgingly use it none the less. Riot-monetary-gains gets no immediate income from doing it, so they wont. Not until the point where fixing it would cost more than making a new one.
the client actually bugs less on my laptop from 7 years ago compared to my pc that i built 2 years ago, which is funny because league runs horribly on that laptop(40-60fps medium on laptop, above 140fps maxed out on pc). a rewrite of the code for the client would probably be better for optimization across all kinds of devices but lets face it they're not gonna do shit about it
original client was much more stable and smoother... I've been having fps issues IN the client and not in the game. Because of this stuttering mess I would struggle to change my runes or summoners which would cause me to enter with the wrong setup so many times. It is extremely annoying an no, none of the settings help. Riot said performance wouldn't be affected but they lied, I'm not nostalgic about the old client or anything I've been using this one since the optional beta and it's straight out horrible and even harder to navigate.
I think you did a great job, the animations look really smooth and slick. That said, I'd love having the option to remove some animations in favour of a more reactive UI. After playing hundreds of games I prefer seeing a change quickly after clicking a button rather than waiting for the animation to finish. There's still a place for eye candy though, I love your transition from accepting the game into champion select.
These are a concept published by Riot themselves. OP didn't make these. I do remember thinking to myself that the update was much more underwhelming that advertized.
The client actually did look like this for a VERY small time (or something extremely close to this) when the new client came out, but it was incredibly laggy and everyone hated it. It took 25 seconds to lock in your champ after you would hover over it.
@@user-c3jdf9lylzse its a delusion, riots client is a hot mess. yesterday i got -10lp penalty for dodging a ranked game because it wouldn't let me lock in any of the champions, saying "There was a problem selecting this champion"...
but rather, you open profile tab - collection tab opens instead, you try to open a box or capsule, it asks you to open another one then notifies you with error message, try to purchase a champion - unexpected error occurred...
Been playing League since Vi's release, so many client iterations have passed, and this concept looks amazing btw! What I've always wanted for the client is for it to be something like Overwatch's launcher/main menu, something like that would be perfect in my opinion, a robust looking fullscreen launcher with nice but not excessive animations, where you can check out stuff like your skins, manage your account info like most played champions, total playtime etc, in a more seamless suite, the current one based on HTML5 and Java is nice and flexible and good for low end machines... But damn does it feel like garbage most of the time.
@@psygopel1102 wich is arguably even worse. chrome is a memory hog and i dont expect it to change anytime soon, and does riot even update the chromium version inside electron? we might be running a completely outdate version of chromium and there is no way of updating it for security and performance reasons, we are at the mercy on riot as allways.
@@psygopel1102 oh so not Java, but Chromium/Electron, got it. @@WolfLadyLouise The thing is the client isn't even good for low end machines anymore. I had a low end PC a few months ago and I had to use RuneChanger because the lag wouldn't even let me change my runes. I admit it was pretty friendly a while ago, but not anymore.
Honestly, that profile banner would look awesome! Just imagining a Coven Evelynn above my icon is spine tingling! Or if you have a skin with it'd matching icon, equipping that icon changes the banner to it's appropriate skin
I could not even fathom the effort that would be required to cut every champion from every single skin splash and edit the lighting, highlighting, and fade at the bottom of the portrait so that it would be compatible with a Lobby banner. What an undertaking.
@@Furious321 oh it would take a while, which makes sense as to why it didn't happen, but a version of it like for game loading screens might work also.
i really want them to implement something similar to wildrift but equipped better for pc. the main thing is i want them to implement the models for skins, and if you main a character alot you can unlock unique stances/poses for the skin. it would just make the game feel more personal and also give a really cool dimension to skins they currently don't have
Theyre just not going to do this. They could've done this entirely with the LCS and made Clash the main game mode and had grass roots comp teams run the scene, but instead the scene is ran by paid actors who sell the idea of solo queue. League never rewards people for actually being good lmao. Look at the prize money epic was forking out for fortnite, league top to bottom is a joke from its client to its balance team to its ant farm playerbase and to its pro scene that has orgs who play all day and still somehow lose to southeast Asians. The honor system is also a joke, imagine if you could honor/dishonor anyone in the game and actually have a higher or lower chance of playing with them in the future. Instead its a teacher pet system riot uses to stop accounts from progressing. Theyre never gona make cool ideas like giving money to clash winners, making hidden skins/animations for high mastery, fix their client or overhauling honor to make it actually fucking do anything because the systems have been so shit forever and people keep playing and throwing money at riot
@@KiteTijink funny thing is, i didnt complain ab the game at all, only called the balance team stupid. Which they do dumb stuff like leaving champs like quinn outdated forever, thats not even arguable. The game itself is alright with friends
That would actually be good, which is why we here at Riot feel like this wouldn't be a good step for our company and YOU, our community and loyal fans.
Animations are nice, but the problem is that they can make the input feel slow. For example: the "ban phase" animation feels like forever, and if you see that 20 times, it can feel annoying. IN User-experience design, it is often more important to streamline towards "input". Sure, everytime you change a rune it can look awesome, but in the end it's better if it is instant and readable.
But it doesn't take longer than it already does, it just has animations, seeing this every single day is better than not having an animation like it does now
A fresh recode would be great. I feel like the biggest thing should be having a working client without countless bugs that continuously happen. Literally one bug I experience a lot since I go between a few accounts is not being able to queue up and having to restart client to fix it. I can even name a few bugs off the top of my head like: • invites are invisible and they don't send • person accepts but isn't in lobby visually and can't accept queue because of that reason • can't queue up on login • session expired at the end of every game They all force you to restart your client and there's plenty more bugs out there I feel like stuff like endgame lobby and scoreboard is leaning towards mobile game look. Would be nice if league swayed away from that and kept it own look like it's been doing throughout the years. Mobile game like client would just look so tacky
They probably can recode the entire client. But you know what, recode the client = lot of work but no money = lost time to do other thing to make money like skins! All is about money now!
- Lost connection in champ selection even tho everything else was fine (connection wise, ban) - When I picked my champ and then banned one, I could not accept my selection anymore since every champ I clicked on was greyed out (ban)
no rito has said they want people on older computers to still run it but when I emailed them and told them about freezes and shit they basically told me to get a new computer so i wouldnt run into these issues.
When i switched to Dota the client almost felt like a culture shock to me 🤣Its Client so so infinite times better its insane. Watch Tab. Skin previews. Weather Effects, Music Packs, the Game loads in the Background while picking the Heroes so there is no Loading Screen at all and so on.
As a game that is supposed to be played on almost any PC, this client would be a nightmare for people that already have aging hardware. It does look very smooth and the animations are nice, but i prefer function over form. In my opinion the 2015/16 client was by far the best.
but....the league client currently doesnt even has function lmao. thats half the point of this video, the client is the most buggy and laggy client in any game of that size. funciton over form should always be the way when it comes to things like game clients, but the league client has neither.
At this point I feel like it might be a worthwhile endeavor, and as a bonus it might even give us a more stable client. Plus getting a new client might mean that they'll update custom modes! no limit spectator(or at least more than 4), being able to pause/ban more than 3 when its not tournament mode, and if we get full customization of the map, we can have fun mini games.
The title should be "COULD HAVE looked like". This was the concept but wasn't what became reality becausea large majority of players pcs couldn't handle the lag from this clients animations. There's a reason why we didn't get this client and instead got a lowered version that in time, only got lower. It was a concept but in reality couldn't be made for the mass.

Just my 2 cents, but as an outsider coming from other MOBAs, I remember my first impressions with League being in awe with how polished the client felt. In comparison to other MOBAs, League looked and operated like a luxury version of its competitors. That impression still hasn't died for me, 5 years later. honestly, although it hurts us, riot only seeks to squeeze as much as possible out of the game. skins, expansions, new champions, more skins, they are more focused on the lol mmorpg, leaving aside any great change in the moba, letting it die little by little. they said lol moba would last 10 more years from 2020 apparently it has 8 left now you will feel it more and more with the passage of time....
I remember the uproar when they remade the client a couple of years ago. As per usual, people were upset at stuff changing. But the prospect of having a working client with good animations was able to contain the fanbase a bit. Looking back, Riot made a damn lot of false promises with the client we now have.
I think this would be nice, but in my opinion, instead of updating or "improving" the client we already have, why not do it good but from scratch, and potentially avoiding a lot of problems you have right now or the new fixes encountering issues with already extisting features. And maybe in the way of building the client that appears on the video or simply just a better one, they might think of new things to add. I guess the thing with riot is that they're trying to fix up a blanket with patches and at last, they ended up with a blanket solely made up of patches.
Yep, it's honestly just the old code holding it back. League of Legends 2 needs to happen due to how archaic the systems are, but that's not coming for like another 25 years, then we need a new one at that point.
i agree put the shit the not careness not fucking anything. to the league of legends 2. make all the shit rito corporation wants in that game. so we can seperate 2009-2019 from the shit that now is
Riot Games is one of, if not THE biggest gaming company and they cannot even make a stable client. It's honestly mindblowing. Riot should stop implementing useless features like banners, challenges, tokens, titles and all that 'fancy' stuff and first focus on making a client that doesn't bug, crash or freezes after 10 interactions!
Honestly I prefer the one that we have now, I'm sick of overstimulation. The way you designed it is super cool and creative but it's really too much information, I like things simple
I just want riot to fix the client. But that would require time and money. I wouldn't expect a small indie dev like Riot Games to be able to pull that off.
Keep in mind too that, while things like 0:47 look epic, the way bans are now is very different from how it was back then. The animations do look cool, but they are somewhat intense. It could be a nice option I suppose, but honestly I'm pretty content just having a client that functions flawlessly like Riot's newer clients do (VALORANT, etc.)
back in 2016, just before the full rework of the client, we had a version for the pick/ban where the champion's images were like cards instead of full background images. That was actually the smoothest version we ever had and I loved it, but only lasted like for one season until the Rework.
I played wild rift only few times but the way the game starts after the client counts down is so ccol. The charecters dissepearing one by one and teleporting to the rift gives you the feeling you as the player are on the rift to fight now
So nostalgic seeing that s5-s6 pre released lobby UI's I only said this because i played in 2016-2017 inside a computer cafe, Garena had a beta and that was playable, and then the runes, so good to look at, and then they removed it in s8, i missed those days

Not until the point where fixing it would cost more than making a new one.
the client actually bugs less on my laptop from 7 years ago compared to my pc that i built 2 years ago, which is funny because league runs horribly on that laptop(40-60fps medium on laptop, above 140fps maxed out on pc). a rewrite of the code for the client would probably be better for optimization across all kinds of devices but lets face it they're not gonna do shit about it
@@braeden5118 so you're telling me the client is just a glorified website from 2010?
@@braeden5118 i mean you would think that with the amount of money they make they would make one.
original client was much more stable and smoother...
Mostly because they implemented it using the old code. if they made a new one, and transitioned there. most problems would have been fixed

Its not based on java, its based on chronium/electron.
@@gibarel exactly
@@psygopel1102 oh so not Java, but Chromium/Electron, got it.
Also, I realize a client like Overwatch's would maybe bump up the PC performance needs and the size of the League installation, but honestly a good, functional launcher feels worth the extra size, wanting LoL to be capable to run even on potatoes has its advantages but also some downsides.
@@WolfLadyLouise The thing is the client isn't even good for low end machines anymore. I had a low end PC a few months ago and I had to use RuneChanger because the lag wouldn't even let me change my runes. I admit it was pretty friendly a while ago, but not anymore.
Lmao I felt like the ekko line was an attack on the current client "you used to be cool"
Honestly, that profile banner would look awesome! Just imagining a Coven Evelynn above my icon is spine tingling! Or if you have a skin with it'd matching icon, equipping that icon changes the banner to it's appropriate skin
True I hope they add it

I LOVE the design at 0:47. I hope they implement more additions for the profile
But it doesn't take longer than it already does, it just has animations, seeing this every single day is better than not having an animation like it does now
Yes, but it would certainly be possible to make animations with the same duration nowadays

If only legacy client would come back
Dude my client is self harming itself, 10 year old spaghetti code stuck with ducktape is not the best idea.
*Hellll YESSSSSS I WANT THIS SOOO FUCKING BADLY.*
A fresh recode would be great.
I feel like the biggest thing should be having a working client without countless bugs that continuously happen. Literally one bug I experience a lot since I go between a few accounts is not being able to queue up and having to restart client to fix it.
I can even name a few bugs off the top of my head like:
• invites are invisible and they don't send
• person accepts but isn't in lobby visually and can't accept queue because of that reason
• can't queue up on login
• session expired at the end of every game
They all force you to restart your client and there's plenty more bugs out there
I feel like stuff like endgame lobby and scoreboard is leaning towards mobile game look.
Would be nice if league swayed away from that and kept it own look like it's been doing throughout the years. Mobile game like client would just look so tacky
never had them, im pretty sure those arent reproducible at all
They probably can recode the entire client. But you know what, recode the client = lot of work but no money = lost time to do other thing to make money like skins! All is about money now!
- Lost connection in champ selection even tho everything else was fine (connection wise, ban)
- When I picked my champ and then banned one, I could not accept my selection anymore since every champ I clicked on was greyed out (ban)
no rito has said they want people on older computers to still run it but when I emailed them and told them about freezes and shit they basically told me to get a new computer so i wouldnt run into these issues.
Dude imagine banning Ekko in champ select and his model just looks sad while saying "you used to be cool". I'll never ban that champ my entire life.
Everything with the banking phase was amazing love the music
At this point I feel like it might be a worthwhile endeavor, and as a bonus it might even give us a more stable client. Plus getting a new client might mean that they'll update custom modes! no limit spectator(or at least more than 4), being able to pause/ban more than 3 when its not tournament mode, and if we get full customization of the map, we can have fun mini games.
When a few guys in their rooms are more creative than entire company.
Bro, this ban system...
I don’t even care about fancy animations I just want a client that isn’t a buggy pos
But if your PC couldn't handle with these animations you should be able to disable animations. That's how they can balance this.

Just my 2 cents, but as an outsider coming from other MOBAs, I remember my first impressions with League being in awe with how polished the client felt. In comparison to other MOBAs, League looked and operated like a luxury version of its competitors. That impression still hasn't died for me, 5 years later.
I know that the client has its issues, and Wild Rift puts it to shame, but it's easy to get so got up in could-bes and should-bes that we forget how it is in comparison to other games out there in the genre, or at least the major ones.
dude I played smite and heroes of the storm recently and their in-game clients put riot to shame, what other "alive" moba did I miss?

Clash still has problems as of now,I guess you don't play it often to realize
If you wanna shill for riot,go ahead,no one's gonna stop you, just don't defend the client bro, everyone knows it's trash, you're just exposing yourself
I mentioned mobile games just to rule out you playing them, because you actually said that riot's client was better than the major mobas (smite,hots,dota2) when in fact it's actually the worst,so you're either actually lying,or delusional
I'd recommend you to play other games besides LoL,there's plenty to experience out there
What would the animations distract from?
honestly, although it hurts us, riot only seeks to squeeze as much as possible out of the game. skins, expansions, new champions, more skins, they are more focused on the lol mmorpg, leaving aside any great change in the moba, letting it die little by little.
they said lol moba would last 10 more years from 2020 apparently it has 8 left now you will feel it more and more with the passage of time....
this has only become true the past few years, it's so depressing :/
This client concept reminds of HoN.
I still remember HoN and LoL were the 2 games that was really hot when Dota 2 was not out that time
I remember the uproar when they remade the client a couple of years ago.
As per usual, people were upset at stuff changing. But the prospect of having a working client with good animations was able to contain the fanbase a bit.
Looking back, Riot made a damn lot of false promises with the client we now have.
I love the fact that they promise all this and i still get the "Match Found" sound effect bugged during the draft EVERY SINGLE TIME i queue
I guess the thing with riot is that they're trying to fix up a blanket with patches and at last, they ended up with a blanket solely made up of patches.
damn that transition from the match found screen to champion select was sick
The way you designed it is super cool and creative but it's really too much information, I like things simple

back in 2016, just before the full rework of the client, we had a version for the pick/ban where the champion's images were like cards instead of full background images. That was actually the smoothest version we ever had and I loved it, but only lasted like for one season until the Rework.
This preseason I want them to revist the client and try to fix as many bugs as possible!
They have a team constantly working on the client. They occasionally make news posts but its been a while since the last one.
Stable, minimalistic and simple client is all what i need
Even Dota 2 has remade their client a few times to be able to load a match within seconds and make everything run super smooth
No, they don't have time. They are busy enough raising RP prices and releasing Ultimate Spellbook
I wish they ran the same code, we could still have game modes on different maps. But they changed how custom games work since the client update.
Sorry i got nostalgic seeing old aatrox and irelia :,(
I played wild rift only few times but the way the game starts after the client counts down is so ccol. The charecters dissepearing one by one and teleporting to the rift gives you the feeling you as the player are on the rift to fight now

I would like the login screens from the old client, and the ability to choose the champion displayed and the music played.
So nostalgic seeing that s5-s6 pre released lobby UI's
I only said this because i played in 2016-2017 inside a computer cafe, Garena had a beta and that was playable, and then the runes, so good to look at, and then they removed it in s8, i missed those days
