  • This video provides a clear guidance to read polyester film and ceramic capacitors printed with various codes. These codes describe their capacitance, voltage and tolerance values. This guidance and explanation is much important when replacing capacitors with new ones having different codes, but same values. Also useful for beginners when dealing with capacitors.

    Will anyone tell me what does the "B" mean in the minute: 1:33 (blue capacitor), mine starts with an "R" and ends with a "UK" or "U

    • @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
      @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      R = Temperature characteristics
      Capacitance change within +/-15% at -25 to +85°C temperature range.
      Capacitance change within +15% and -30% at +85 to +125°C temperature range.
      472 = Capacitance value
      472 = 4700pF = 4.7nF = 0.0047uF
      K = Capacitance tolerance
      +/-10% = +/-470pF = 5170pF or 4230pF
      I have a doubt about the code UK
      If it 1K, 2K, 3K or 6K, the maximum DC voltage is 1kV, 2kV, 3.15kV or 6.3kV respectively.

      Replacing 47pF with 100pF depends up on your application. It is not suitable for radio frequency circuits. But it is ok for ordinary and basic circuits. Also you can connect two 100pF capacitors in series to obtain 50pF one, which is nearly equal to 47pF.

    This is supposed to be 10pf right?

    • @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
      @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it is not a mistake.
      Code 100 is a direct pF value printed in ceramic capacitors. Code for 100pF is 101.
      Some manufacturers print direct value as 100, rest print 101 code. Both are the same.
      100 = 101 = 100pF
      220 = 221 = 220pF
      470 = 471 = 470pF

      680 may be the part number in your datasheet, but you cannot decide it as 68 or 680pF without refering the description.
      For a 68pF capacitor it should be printed the number 68 on capacitor and for a 680pF capacitor it should be 680 or 681.

      F is the tolerance code (1%).

    Very good video. I do electronics for a hobby, mainly just replacing faulty components. I bought some ceramic capacitors (marked 104) from a reputable dealer. When I tested them all, they read around 37nf. Are these faulty, or is my meter no good? The meter I use is a LCR-T4, one of those inexpensive Chinese brands. I read somewhere it may have something to do with something called bias effect.

      @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for admiring my work.
      I too do electronic works as a hobby, not in commercially.
      104 means 100nF and the value shown in the multimeter (37nF) is two or three times less than the printed value.
      We can't exactly determine whether the multimeter reads incorrectly or the capacitors are faulty. But I think it is better to test those capacitors with a branded multimeter, because some cheap multimeters do not sense properly for small valued capacitors.
      Also use box type capacitors in cases where high accuracy and reliability is needed.

    Hi experts, may I know how to read the capacitor. Let say the label on the capacitor is 250uf and 25v. Does it mean it can store up to 250uf when 25v is applied? What if I apply a lesser voltage let's say 2 volt?

    • @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
      @hobbyelectroniccircuits7391  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      250uF / 25V means it is safe to use this capacitor upto 25 volts and its capacitance is 250uF. Higher the capacitance more energy it will store.
      Charge (coulomb) = Capacitance (farads) × Voltage (volts) = Current (amperes) × Time (seconds)

      There is a video in my channel named "230V LED bulb circuits", for white LEDs. But it is not good to connect large number of (50) RGB LEDs in series because they are not similar exactly and weakest LED will burn over certain time. One solution is make series sets using only ten LEDs for each set and connect those five sets together in parallel. Then use 224/400V or 474/400V polyester film capacitor, 470k resistor, four IN4007, 10uF/400V capacitor, 27 to 30V/1W zener diode to make the driver. Here are some of white LED projects, you will get basic idea through them. m.th-cam.com/video/u6wZu2ZBpIo/w-d-xo.html
