Religion is the only UNIVERSAL Philosophy which can keep mankind on toe. Be it Islam, Hindu, Christian, Jew u name it. The very intention of religions on earth is to teach humans how to be best of themselves with good traits. But while on the way to achieve the same, almost every religion adopts some irrational defense and logic to justify. Like there is heaven, re incarnation, god's agents, etc after death which will either punish or reward you for your deeds while alive. And yes the religion also takes an ugly turn somewhere while it's defending itself as the best and the universal one.. That's the only problem with the religion. Not everybody abides by morality and rationality. It demands more thoughts and critical analysis from humans and everybody doesn't have time to be rational and analytical. Even if someone becomes rational, the chances of he being morally nice is very bleak. We, only Humans need religion and not any other animal, bcz, only humans are RATIONAL creatures. When one is rational he is also very greedy and exploitative naturally. Bcz once he knows that there is no god looking over his deeds and nothing post death, and human is the ultimate super creature on earth born to rule the earth, why would he try to be a good person to others at the cost of his time and energy? Why one would be nice to animals? Why one would do charity from his hard earned money? Why one would not perform crimes and exploit if they can have luxurious life by that way? Instead he finds every way to justify his cruel actions, be it robbery/murder saying he's just living his life the best and the rule is "survival of the fittest"! Religion and fear of god is easier to be appealed to put them in right track to perform right deeds! 7.6 billion people on earth, not all of them have time to study philosophy, ethics, morals and rationality and yet have patience to be nice person...
And I completely endorse Bread labor idea of Gandhi. Even today the society hasn't changed. Not just in India even in Western well developed countries. We consider physical labor as the cheapest kind of menial work performed only by uncivilized humans.. Thats the very reason behind inventions of Washing machines and stuff like that. and everybody wants to do mental job only... Now that we (so called mental laborers) realized that this is making us unhealthy and fat, we want to do cosmetic physical activities like Gym, exercise and walking kind of things. Also the irony is we want to use Machines even there! You want us to be physically active? Well, we do it civilized way "using Gym equipment, but never manual washing or walking or moping work". This shows our mentality and attitude holding on to the ideals like "Physical labor is not for the civilized". God knows what's wrong with us Humans!

I think Gandhi always used to favour "Means" .
If I'm wrong, please correct me.

For Gandhiji both ends and means mattered. One could not ignore the morality of means to procure certain ends
