  • This video looks at the history of Cuba to explain why the island has followed such a different path to the rest of Latin America. In particular, it explores why it gained independence late from Spain, why it became a US protectorate, how the Cuban Revolution began and how it has developed. It begins with Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and ends with Miguel Diaz Canel and of course covers Fidel Castro, Gerardo Machado and Fulgencio Batista.

    So why didn’t the U.S. provide economic assistance in 1959?

    •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's a fantastic question. The government seemed to be divided over it and ultimately it was Eisenhower who opted not to do it. Maybe because he didn't trust Castro? Maybe because he thought they could control him regardless? Whatever the reason, it was a crucial mistake for the US.

    Cuba could have chose to send troops in central America during the central American wars in the 70s and 80s. Like el salvador, Guatemala, nicaragua but that would have been to high profile for castro and the united states would have probably gotten involved themselves so instead they just helped groups like the fmln or the unrg, sandinistas with arms and equipment. They sent soldiers to Angola or congo because those countries were much more far away and out reach fron the United States. Apart from grenada of course. Grenada was the only place were cuban and American troops met each other in combat. And it went terribly for castro

    It sucks you missed out on the foreign policy of cuba under castro. He sent cuban troops to africa to help with anti imperialist causes. And in grenada. And helped leftist revolutionaries in central America

      I don't usually include the foreign policy of any country. As it was, I left out most of the colonial period. It's hard to fit everything in 20 minutes.

    I just don't understand why Cuba cannot exploit its own mineral and agricultural abundant wealth..? I mean according to this brief history of Cuba, you state that Spain, as well as the U.S. "exploited Cuba" and had large interests and investments in Cuba. If outsiders could make huge profits, while still making Cuba prosperous for most, then why can't they do the same..? Blaming Spain, the U.S., or even the collapse of the USSR doesn't seem credible..! I mean really? Did all the rich soil disappear all of a sudden, because the Cuban government expropriated all U.S. land interests and even Cuban owned lands..? They can't even produce enough FOOD to feed themselves... Even with all the "Corruption" attributed to most of the previous Cuban governments prior to 1959, the buildings and infrastructure of Cuba was on par and even surpassed that of European countries. Fidel inherited Cuba at its PEAK..! Then he proceeded to run the entire country into the ground. That is a fact! Just look at Cuba today. Any part of Cuba. Even the capital Havana is full of dilapidated and crumbling buildings. Basic services are intermittent at best..! Again, why can't Cuba prosper with so much?

      Did you not watch the video past 1959? Cuba became a dictatorship dependent on the Soviet Union and then tried to survive by creating a dual currency. There are no institutions that can sustain economic growth even if government got out of the way.

    • @gregrodriguez714
      @gregrodriguez714 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ I'm not even talking about economic growth... Why is it that they cannot grow enough food for themselves..? Did all the farmers leave too..?

    •  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gregrodriguez714 it's a number of things. Incentives are not aligned, the embargo makes some agricultural inputs more expensive, and markets are too small.

    • @gregrodriguez714
      @gregrodriguez714 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ "Incentives are not aligned" ? "markets are too small"? I'm not sure you're quite understanding me? I'm talking about local Cuban farmers growing and providing enough produce for Cubans... The soil in Cuba is RICH! Yet most Cubans don't eat vegetables..? I'm not talking about world markets here. Seriously, most Cuban farmers don't plant their own plots of land, because their own government makes it illegal for them to sell their own produce. The Embargo has nothing to do with Agriculture production within Cuba..!

    •  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m explaining to you why they don’t produce more food. Basically government policy and the embargo make it too expensive to produce most food in the island. So it doesn’t happen. What gets produced is what can be grown in the island whose inputs are easy to obtain.
