He is the perfect Darkling casting, he understands the Darkling's deepest, complicated feelings better than probably any actor could. We really lucked out with him.

Ben Barnes is showing every bit of humanity that you don't see in the books for a villain. It’s kind of heartbreaking as he has an 'agenda' to save Grisha and a powerlust. 100's of years of pain has made the soft Aleksander disappear and then there are those special moments when Alina brings him back (his balance). Like when he was explaining the Ravka threats and got enveloped in emotional darkness in episode4 and Alina touched him/cancelled out the darkness and they were engulfed in a light bubble. She mirrored what he had said in an earlier episode without even realising it - 'You are not alone!' (For immortals thats a bid deal!). God he looked so relieved like he wanted to cry from so many years of pain -being close to someone finally who can be by his side. 🖤 Another example in the 'make me your villain' argument where Alina firmly stood her ground but made it clear in a very queen-like stance how they could have had a future together. She placed his hand on her chest as a reminder and you could see a glimpse of the old Aleksander reignite with her touch and the sadness and regret appear in the Darklings eyes.🖤 Alina is his equal and he has been in love with her all along. But like most fantasy dramas its PROBLEMATIC.

Shadow and light complete each other. Without the darkness of shadow the light loses its purpose. I love how they complement each other. Darkling and alina are bound to be together. Her positivity will nullify his darkness and the nature will find it's balance.

Darkling was never a bad guy. Yes made wrong decisions but not unreasonably. He was saving and protecting Grisha. At the end of the books he shows it in the most self-secrificing way possible ♥️i respect him so much more than her best friend

Typically I prefer closer adaptations to the books that movies/shows are based on but for Shadow and Bone, absolutely want them to change Alina and the Darkling ending. The actors Ben and Jessica have way too much chemistry that pairing them with anyone else would be unbelievable.
I love Jessie's performance as Alina. She portrays her with a quiet confidence & an inner strength that is not angry, vengeful or victimized by her pain & suffering. She molded Alina to be someone that is always hopeful & keeps getting back up even when she gets knocked down. She doesn't feel limited by her weaknesses or her appearance, in spite of the fact that she is on the receiving end of a lot of hate & racism. She is very self-reliant, clever, independent, definitely doesn't not to be saved by a man...she knows what she is and what she isn't. She doesn't feel sorry for herself or dwells in her trauma, she steps into her power & makes magic happen. She is one bad-ass Grisha!

As someone who hasn't read the books, but I have read a lot of spoilers... like I get he is the bad guy in the book, but literally the series give us some hints that he actually kind of cares ... like maybe it's just me . Great edit by the way! I loved it !

He is extremely complicated and conflicted in the books. Ben nails him as the actor. He wants Alina's power, but he also knows she is the only one who could ever understand him and he feels as if he is finally not alone. His obsession with her hurts and kills a lot of people and he may be brutal, but it is clear he still cares for and desires her in a way that goes beyond wanting her power. He wants HER to want him too, to come to him willingly. The end of the books make it more clear that he knows that without her, he is completely and utterly alone again. And in the books, she knows that he is the only person that will ever truly understand her, too.

Darklina has the POTENTIAL to give us a proper lovers to enemies to lovers/enemies to lovers story. They can be the 🔥BADASS COUPLE🔥 ! I know the darkling is very bad and toxic and manipulative,basically THE VILLAIN and shipping darklina is like morally wrong but you know what- it’s fictional,COMPLETELY FICTIONAL! So I ship them because I feel like they belong to each other and have this bond like no other. I shipped them in the books too and in the show I know they hurried up because there was less time/were less episodes but still loved them and I cannot deny their BEAUTIFUL chemistry 😭.. Alina and Aleksander are like two sides of the same coin...Forever connected. I haven't read the books but the Netflix show has shown so much depth in his character and showing his backstory really shows that he had reasons for what he did, he really was trying to protect his people. You could tell that he didn't actually mean to create the fold it came flowing out from his immense pain and anger from his years of never-ending persecution and loss and took on a life of its own. I don't think he is 100% pure evil at all, yes he has done many evil things, but I believe that no one is beyond redemption and it would be really good if the series played this out... You could see that he did have genuine feelings for Alina, it wasn't all manipulation. It would be so good if they would look more at their connection in season 2 and that inspite of her better judgement Alina would start to understand him and care for him It was clear in the kiss scenes between them that significant changes were made from the books - she kissed him first, and then in the next scene he stopped and asked her if she was sure... That clearly shows he cares about what she wanted. He is such an intriguing character with so many layers to him and I hope Netflix will continue to give us that and not end up making him some one dimensional villain (like it seems he was in the books) A redemption arc is what he needs. I know that some one else commented that will never happen because their needs to be an ultimate villain for the story to make sense ... I think that is true, there does need to be a villain.. But why can't they bring in another rival for his power?? I know it would be totally different to the books but plenty of other series have totally deviated from the original books. apparently the author said in the past that she doesn't want to promote a Darklina love story... I can understand that as the 'woke' generation will be all worried that it would send a bad example to teenage girls... But come on... Teenage girls realise this is fantasy! It's not trying to reflect reality! And everyone who has ever read a book knows that the complicated 'bad guy' is always the more interesting love interest than the faithful good guy!! Speaking of Mal, apparently they have changed his character in the show a bit and made him nicer, he doesn't seem to have a single flaw now (in the books he was possessive and a bit of a prat at times) but now his character in the show is actually pretty bland I think... I know it's cheesy but there is potential that Alina's light could save Aleksander from himself and start to let go of the bitterness and revenge that has blighted his existence for so long! I really hope they explore this possibility because it makes much more interesting storytelling I think! the typical archetypal villain role has been done to death! Let's see a more multidimensional character who is capable of change because of allowing love to enter his heart again after centuries of pushing it away! Also, at the end of the season, yes The Darkling went too far, killed a lot of people and treated Alina terribly but he has a warped viewpoint on how to handle things because he is so used to being betrayed. As they approached he knew Zlatan would kill them all, he was really taking the only option he thought he could at that point and he has sadly let the thirst for power consume him. I really do not think he is beyond redemption though! I hope he can be saved somehow... Please Netflix!! I mean, the chemistry between Aleksander and Alina is off the charts, they cannot just put that aside, I don't see any chemistry with Mal and her, just more of a loving friendship. Ok, I know that eventually Mal will be her destiny, they will never change that from the books, but at least give us a bit more of a story between the darkling and Alina for a while inbetween!! ok, that's my two cents worth!! Ha ha, more like a dissertation in fact! Sorry not sorry! 😊 ps - you should watch Sarah Morgan's character breakdown video of The Darkling! It highlights a lot of the key scenes with him. what are other people's thoughts? X
It’s interesting that Netflix chose the two actors with most chemistry to play the ‘doomed’ love affair. Why would they do that? I know in acting they do chemistry tests etc so they knew pre filming this was the case, and as you say, chemistry between Mal and Alina is zero on screen.... makes me wonder if they are going somewhere with it we don’t expect...
I got some serious Klaus Mikaelson or Rio vibes here... I'm a simple girl, I totally fell for Ben Barnes, I love his acting for this character role. I love it when you can't really hate the bad guys. There are way too interesting to be hated and forgotten. And I sincerily hope that the series will give us some more steamy Darklina scenes even though I know which direction the relation between them in the books takes...
Seriously when it was announced that Ben Barnes would be playing the Darkling, I was thinking okay, that's fine. But when I saw the trailer and I could feel my childhood crush on him rising from the dead, waving at me going, "hey, remember me?" And I just went, "goddamit, not another depressed-demon-boy type fictional crush. Loki is enough." But oh well, here I go again.
Whoop Whoop! Season 2 is Go! Let's hope we get to see more character development in regard to the mutual vulnerabilities between the Darkling and Alina and their undeniable connection. I hope they will deviate from the books more and allow us to see a softer side to The Darkling when he thinks of Alina. They cannot let all that chemistry go to waste!!

I finished watching this series only yesterday, after reading the first book. And then I found this video. This is just perfect, with all my favourite scenes and the music too. Can't stop listening to this. JUST WOW ! 🥺❤
I want a tragic romance: -Alina gets slowly more dark, by being faced with difficult choices -Darkling gets resurrected, and becomes slowly more good, from his love for Alina (but she keeps pushing him away) -season 3 ends with the Darkling sacrificing himself to save Alina and the world -she admits she loves him, he dies at peace in her arms - the end. Let's all admit this is the best poetic ending, and works best with the plot so far 💘
Darkling is just a guy who is fighting against people who will eventually hurt others just the way they killed his wife and almost killed him. The problem is he is not the kind of guy, you can piss off and go off to your lala land. He made alina who she is. He gave her respect. Love. Attention. And as so soon as he did everyone else began to see goodness in her too. He is darkness and alina is light. The both should be together to bring out the balance. Alina is the kindness he needs and Darkling is the protection and love alina needs.

Crazy thing I actually liked them together. When you see his side him becoming who is is was because he was betrayed. The same people he help and would die for turned on him and tried to kill him. Out of rage things happened and somehow he became the villain. Then he met the girl. Even though he claimed to like her and I believed he did he also was using her to get what he wanted as well as making her a slave for his own will. Touchy storyline. Hopefully they make for them to be together because I really did like them together.
The book was absolutely amazing!! Haven't seen the show yet, but I like Mal as the love interest in the book because the darkling is a complete psycho, but do feel like a part of him genuinely cares for Alina. It will be interesting to see what the show did differently from the book.

I honestly don’t care about the ending of the ships but I don’t like that she lost her powers and we still don’t know how she got her powers etc. I think there’s still so many unanswered questions

If they follow the books, he basically kills or hurts every single person Alina liked or once knew.
Typically I prefer closer adaptations to the books that movies/shows are based on but for Shadow and Bone, absolutely want them to change Alina and the Darkling ending. The actors Ben and Jessica have way too much chemistry that pairing them with anyone else would be unbelievable.

I love Jessie's performance as Alina. She portrays her with a quiet confidence & an inner strength that is not angry, vengeful or victimized by her pain & suffering. She molded Alina to be someone that is always hopeful & keeps getting back up even when she gets knocked down. She doesn't feel limited by her weaknesses or her appearance, in spite of the fact that she is on the receiving end of a lot of hate & racism. She is very self-reliant, clever, independent, definitely doesn't not to be saved by a man...she knows what she is and what she isn't. She doesn't feel sorry for herself or dwells in her trauma, she steps into her power & makes magic happen. She is one bad-ass Grisha!

As someone who hasn't read the books, but I have read a lot of spoilers... like I get he is the bad guy in the book, but literally the series give us some hints that he actually kind of cares ... like maybe it's just me . Great edit by the way! I loved it !

He is extremely complicated and conflicted in the books. Ben nails him as the actor. He wants Alina's power, but he also knows she is the only one who could ever understand him and he feels as if he is finally not alone. His obsession with her hurts and kills a lot of people and he may be brutal, but it is clear he still cares for and desires her in a way that goes beyond wanting her power. He wants HER to want him too, to come to him willingly. The end of the books make it more clear that he knows that without her, he is completely and utterly alone again. And in the books, she knows that he is the only person that will ever truly understand her, too.

Darklina has the POTENTIAL to give us a proper lovers to enemies to lovers/enemies to lovers story. They can be the 🔥BADASS COUPLE🔥 ! I know the darkling is very bad and toxic and manipulative,basically THE VILLAIN and shipping darklina is like morally wrong but you know what- it’s fictional,COMPLETELY FICTIONAL! So I ship them because I feel like they belong to each other and have this bond like no other. I shipped them in the books too and in the show I know they hurried up because there was less time/were less episodes but still loved them and I cannot deny their BEAUTIFUL chemistry 😭.. Also they are interesting and fun to watch. Netflix NEEDS TO CHANGE THE ENDING AND THE ENDGAME like they already changed SO MUCH OF THE THINGS so like please 🥺🌘☀️🖤

Alina and Aleksander are like two sides of the same coin...Forever connected. I haven't read the books but the Netflix show has shown so much depth in his character and showing his backstory really shows that he had reasons for what he did, he really was trying to protect his people. You could tell that he didn't actually mean to create the fold it came flowing out from his immense pain and anger from his years of never-ending persecution and loss and took on a life of its own.
I don't think he is 100% pure evil at all, yes he has done many evil things, but I believe that no one is beyond redemption and it would be really good if the series played this out... You could see that he did have genuine feelings for Alina, it wasn't all manipulation. It would be so good if they would look more at their connection in season 2 and that inspite of her better judgement Alina would start to understand him and care for him
It was clear in the kiss scenes between them that significant changes were made from the books - she kissed him first, and then in the next scene he stopped and asked her if she was sure... That clearly shows he cares about what she wanted. He is such an intriguing character with so many layers to him and I hope Netflix will continue to give us that and not end up making him some one dimensional villain (like it seems he was in the books) A redemption arc is what he needs. I know that some one else commented that will never happen because their needs to be an ultimate villain for the story to make sense ... I think that is true, there does need to be a villain.. But why can't they bring in another rival for his power?? I know it would be totally different to the books but plenty of other series have totally deviated from the original books. apparently the author said in the past that she doesn't want to promote a Darklina love story... I can understand that as the 'woke' generation will be all worried that it would send a bad example to teenage girls... But come on... Teenage girls realise this is fantasy! It's not trying to reflect reality! And everyone who has ever read a book knows that the complicated 'bad guy' is always the more interesting love interest than the faithful good guy!! Speaking of Mal, apparently they have changed his character in the show a bit and made him nicer, he doesn't seem to have a single flaw now (in the books he was possessive and a bit of a prat at times) but now his character in the show is actually pretty bland I think...
I know it's cheesy but there is potential that Alina's light could save Aleksander from himself and start to let go of the bitterness and revenge that has blighted his existence for so long! I really hope they explore this possibility because it makes much more interesting storytelling I think! the typical archetypal villain role has been done to death! Let's see a more multidimensional character who is capable of change because of allowing love to enter his heart again after centuries of pushing it away!
Also, at the end of the season, yes The Darkling went too far, killed a lot of people and treated Alina terribly but he has a warped viewpoint on how to handle things because he is so used to being betrayed. As they approached he knew Zlatan would kill them all, he was really taking the only option he thought he could at that point and he has sadly let the thirst for power consume him. I really do not think he is beyond redemption though! I hope he can be saved somehow... Please Netflix!!
I mean, the chemistry between Aleksander and Alina is off the charts, they cannot just put that aside, I don't see any chemistry with Mal and her, just more of a loving friendship. Ok, I know that eventually Mal will be her destiny, they will never change that from the books, but at least give us a bit more of a story between the darkling and Alina for a while inbetween!!

It’s interesting that Netflix chose the two actors with most chemistry to play the ‘doomed’ love affair. Why would they do that? I know in acting they do chemistry tests etc so they knew pre filming this was the case, and as you say, chemistry between Mal and Alina is zero on screen.... makes me wonder if they are going somewhere with it we don’t expect...

I got some serious Klaus Mikaelson or Rio vibes here... I'm a simple girl, I totally fell for Ben Barnes, I love his acting for this character role. I love it when you can't really hate the bad guys. There are way too interesting to be hated and forgotten. And I sincerily hope that the series will give us some more steamy Darklina scenes even though I know which direction the relation between them in the books takes...

But when I saw the trailer and I could feel my childhood crush on him rising from the dead, waving at me going, "hey, remember me?" I want a tragic romance:
-Alina gets slowly more dark, by being faced with difficult choices
-Darkling gets resurrected, and becomes slowly more good, from his love for Alina (but she keeps pushing him away)
-season 3 ends with the Darkling sacrificing himself to save Alina and the world
-she admits she loves him, he dies at peace in her arms - the end.
Let's all admit this is the best poetic ending, and works best with the plot so far 💘

Darkling is just a guy who is fighting against people who will eventually hurt others just the way they killed his wife and almost killed him. The problem is he is not the kind of guy, you can piss off and go off to your lala land. He made alina who she is. He gave her respect. Love. Attention. And as so soon as he did everyone else began to see goodness in her too. He is darkness and alina is light. The both should be together to bring out the balance. Alina is the kindness he needs and Darkling is the protection and love alina needs.

Crazy thing I actually liked them together. When you see his side him becoming who is is was because he was betrayed. The same people he help and would die for turned on him and tried to kill him. Out of rage things happened and somehow he became the villain. Then he met the girl. Even though he claimed to like her and I believed he did he also was using her to get what he wanted as well as making her a slave for his own will. Touchy storyline. Hopefully they make for them to be together because I really did like them together.

The book was absolutely amazing!! Haven't seen the show yet, but I like Mal as the love interest in the book because the darkling is a complete psycho, but do feel like a part of him genuinely cares for Alina. It will be interesting to see what the show did differently from the book.
