  • Although the Star Raiders II we ended up with was a hasty rebrand of a movie tie-in, there was also a sequel rather more true to the original in the works around the same time. Unfortunately, it never made it to official release, but programmer Aric Wilmunder had the foresight to take it with him when he left Atari, and released it to the public in 2015. Let's try it on The400 Mini!

Nice video Pete. I'll have to try this one out tonight :) I literally spent hours playing Star Raiders as kid, although it took me a while to work out all the keys as the games my dad procured at his meetups didn't often have manuals :)

Definitely it looks more in-line with with the original Star Raiders than what would be done for The Last Starfighter / Star Raiders II. Definitely makes one wonder what they could have done with Star Raiders as a series before that was even really a thing. As always, great job and I look forward to the next videos yet to come.

You can see how Wilmunder took some of the stuff he did in this game with him to Lucasarts and made it more robust for stuff like Koronis Rift and Rescue on Fractalus. And I am somewhat surprised no one from the community has tried finishing/polishing the game considering how highly motivated Atari fans tend to be.

On a purely technical level, it's damn impressive. I miss the smoothness of the original, but going for simplistic 3D actually gets some good results here. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but the ground runs remind me of Red Baron (even if Wilmunder states Empire Strikes Back was the inspiration), and the space flight gives me coin-op Star Wars feels thanks to the crosshair and laser blasts.
Those are probably a coincidence more than anything.
I kind of liked the stepped movement in the original though - those moments of tension waiting for the tick to happen and enemies to move, hoping they don't surround a star base. Somehow the free movement here doesn't offer the same dread for me.
Still a damn shame this never made it out - but history is as history does, and well, alas.

So much of it looks so much like the original Star Raiders that I might call this Star Raiders 1.5
I still really enjoy the original.

Atari really missed out on his talent there. I guess 'Atari really missed out on ______' applies to many many many things.
