I have been flying over 30 yrs, ATP, CFI inst/me, and still enjoyed this video. It is a great instructions. I could give one on one or ground school on this subject. And in general instructor to student training is better than passive videos... However in this case this VIDEO is very effective and well done.... If need to teach a primary student I will give them this link and follow up with a review. WELL DONE.... PS Thinking back over 30 yrs as a student / pvt pilot I took great joy in dead reckoning and pilotage. When I was a student GPS had not quite got into the GA planes cockpit (LORAN was around as wide area NAV). VOR was the primary ground based NAV and required charts. Now with GPS (in our watch, phone, car, plane) it makes pilots lazy about NAV, if you ask me, but than again I am a cranky old Captain. Ha ha. No matter your experience it is always good to dust off the basics and be a student again and always.

I love Dead Reckoning. For me, it is the most chalenging and cool way to navigate.
Actually PILOTAGE is the most challenging for me. Dead reckoning is pretty easy if you know the winds aloft etc. You do the calculations and then compare them to the time it should take with your actual time. Pilotage, on the other hand requires you to identify, sometimes really obscure landmarks on the ground. Sure it is easy to spot major interstates and huge prominent lakes and stuff, but other things like "towers", small airports, small creeks, etc.are a whole different ball of wax. Although I've gotten vastly better at pilotage, through experience and practice, I still find navigating by instruments (like VOR tracking, for instance) much easier!

On the other hand, I remember telling myself that if I ever flew that way I'd prefer it because of all the millions of acres of emergency landing space. Hardest part of an emergency there - I suspect - would be finding anyone out there to give me a ride.
The E6BJA Flight Computer (Apple, Android and Surface Pro) has a Wind Visualiser and Diversion Star which can be used to easily calculate each Leg of a Dead-Reckoning route and Diversions. Simply input your cruise IAS (Indicated Air Speed), Track/Course and Wind Vector. The calculator will then provide the Wind-Corrected heading to fly and the time taken (used for ETA). It has many other calculators too.
Exactly! Probably as slim a chance of the earth's MF malfunctioning as the avionics in modern aircraft. So, if we can trust the earth to do its bit, we can surely trust the aircraft's electrics! 😊👍

The use of "ded" or "deduced reckoning" is not known to have appeared earlier than 1931, much later in history than "dead reckoning" appearing as early as 1613 in the Oxford English Dictionary. The original intention of "dead" in the term is not clear however. Whether it is used to convey "absolute" as in "dead ahead," reckoning using other objects that are "dead in the water," or using reckoning properly "you’re dead if you don’t reckon right," is not known."
Free Idea for business Now we have google maps with function to see pictures of the road to visualise the place and remember how to go somewhere, I believe for the pilots need to be the same Google maps app to be able to see the way you planning to go from a some of the high that you planning to do I am not a pilot yet and can't make that kind of footage but I believe it would be great. If anyone knows the existence of something similar to what I just described, may you please share the name of this APP and where I can download it from.
