Goodbye Legend ! 💘
SUUUUUUUUUPRRR
goodbye
SUUUUUUPERRRRRR
I will love you forever in a SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPPPEEEERRRRRRRRR way
SUPER!!! 🥤
It's age. It's a bitter pill to swallow.
hope he gets the rest he needs, and some great food
Animation production on hiatus. We hope that his successor (not replacement) is worthy of playing Franky, which is one of those long term jobs!
@@Ohara-the-Fox You mean COLA?
He’s only 65, like Tekking said, my father is older than that, Masako herself is in her 80’s! The last picture of the two together he looked SKELETAL in comparison to a woman almost 2 decades older than him
He is young tho , relatively, not the first we expected to retire , I mean for now at least …
I actually understood his comment as him connecting with a much older Franky in his mind but the anime Franky is still the same age he has been for decades now. Maybe it feels odd that he has grown old and he is voicing a character he connected to more when he was younger and now he wants to hand over the rope to someone else until Franky in the anime reaches an older age, the image of the character he envisioned in his mind. I don’t think it’s a criticism of the manga but rather an acknowledgement of just how long he’s been working and voicing this character. I will truly miss his voice. It won’t be the same without him. It breaks my heart thinking more retirements like this are coming as the cast grows older and can’t continue working.
that's a really good point actually. could just be an age thing he's feeling
@@Ohara-the-Fox Yeah, I took his comment as "the gap between Franky's voice in his mind, and the voice he's capable of making now that he's gotten older. It definitely puts a strain on his vocal cords and he probably can't keep it up like he used to.
Yes, I've read the statement in the same way
@@Ohara-the-Fox or this new anime reboot about to be censored as hell and he wants no part in it
Franky just keeps getting more childish. Pre timeskip usop was all comedy but matured during water 7 and then again after the timeskip. Franky was mature when he was introduced in water 7 and used comedy to hide the pain. After the timeskip he is just a oversized child with nipple beams. It does not feel like franky at all. I kinda expected a bit more maturity with age. Going from the cola robot with a dark past to being a more mature guy..... instead we got nipple beams. They took the maturity of a 14yr old and turned it down to a 6yr old.
The hair too.... We all know naruto changing his hair in boruto instead of keeping the big hair like minato did as the 4th hokage.... looked bad. Franky shaving his head... also looks bad.
I also expected him to be revealed to be a genius on par with vegapunk after spending the time skip is vegapunks old lab. He could have been the next generation of scientists on par with MAD.
I can see why the actor may not feel he connects to the character and may be disapointed in the direction taken. He also is older and franky still screaming everything like he never grew up is really hard on his vocal cords.
If franky actually got mature with age and instead of going backwards maybe the voice actor would have felt different.
Thanks, Kazuki Yao, for being our Cyborg Franky for 25 years. 🦾💪🏻 _LIVE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, SUUUUUUUUUPEEEERRRRRR!_
Franky only came in in 2005
@@united_games but Mr 2 n Django still early in the series
@@mohdhafiz9955 true i forgot about them
At least Kazuki Yao will enjoy his retirement he deserves and his successor would pull off the Franky voice in his place.
Yes true. And whoever his successor is, I hope op fans will give him chance and respect and not instantly come to hate and critisize him being total different voice than Kazuki Yaosan.
I think he just isn't feeling as ""Super!!"" as before. I am so sad.We are not gonna get the Franky/ Bon chan conversation with each other as crew mates. I imagined a repeating gag of them chatting in the background 🤣
i think what he meant is that he noticed some decline (maybe alteration) in his performance due to age which does not go along with what he envisions franky to sound like. what I've noticed is his voice in the first episode in the egg head arc you can notice a glaring difference in his voice that i actually went to check whether they had someone replace him for that episode. its very sad but bound to happen one day, i just hope that the majority of the main cast can stick around for the ending
@@abdullahalbraiky5956 i think unfortunately more of the VAs are going to retire soon as well, as we know One Piece isnt going to end for awhile and we dont know what will happen during the future (accidents, etc)
I had a feeling it was coming just from the way his voice sounded in recent arcs, still just as heartbreaking 😔💔
True, it's been noticeable to me since early Egghead when he couldn't roll his trademark Rs and others were apparently even noticing differences in Wano. (I don't understand where Ohara gets the "he looks sick" thing from, he seems fine in his photos to me.)
Manu, I know you said yourself that it was pure speculation on your part, but I feel like you might be reaching a bit with your reading of Kazuki Yao's message as him criticizing Franky or the way he has been handled or even the story as a whole. I've seen most people--myself included--interpret that line as him admitting that he simply can't get his voice to reach the dynamism, energy, and high notes that a bombastic character like Franky demands. The "Franky he envisions" moreso refers to the voice he's had in mind for the character since he was at his prime, the voice of the Franky we met in Water 7, a bar Kazuki Yao simply can't reach without straining his voice nowadays, which you can tell because of the way Franky's voice has been sounding raspier and less potent since the Wano arc.
Again, I understand you made it clear that it's just speculation, I just feel like twisting the words of a heartfelt, potential retirement message like Yao's--one which has such a simpler and more straight-forward reading available--into speculation of him criticizing the material might be a little misguided with a channel with as big of a reach and impression as yours and might let people to spreading that speculation as factual agenda.
Just a thought, I might be totally off-base too and maybe Kazuki Yao did mean it the way you intended, but even then only he really knows exactly what he meant to say, haha. Keep up the good work, Manu!
Yea, like it's kinda clear over the past few years, he even kinda struggled to properly form coherent sentences dues to the strained and lacks the energy in spite of him trying his best. Age is truly something he can't escape. I feel like Manu impose too much of his biased and opinion into a genuine honest message.
Yap yap yap blahhhhh blahhh
Bruh more emotions less words
@JackieRin THIS! ^^^ I said the same thing. Just a bit less wordy. I do appreciate the passion though!
8:05 Franky is like one of the bosses you unlock after beating in a game who once you unlock them they lose like 99% of their power and story
You looked farther into that comment than I did. I just assumed he meant he couldn't perform in the range he wanted Franky to with his health/voice giving out. Your reasoning is very solid, though
I mean, it's very likely to be what you had assumed. He read way too much into a straightforward comment there.
What I undestood about as a growing gap between Voice Actor and Character is that Franky is always high energy, but maybe Yao doesn't have that same energy in himself anymore
@@riccardoconti6682 I agree with you
The "gap" Kazuki Yao referring to is that Franky will definitely become stronger in the story which he envisioned while he is getting weaker in real life..
Franky's voice is my daughter's favorite voice and says " aw aw, fraaaaaanky"
Big Fan Man, love some of your theories, dis agree with some but an absolute Ohara Fan🔥🔥🔥
that's chill, theories are more to have fun, less to be 100% right all the time :)
@@Ohara-the-FoxI cannot tell you how many times I make a theory as a joke completely expired to never happen because it’s dumb and then it happens two arcs later or something.
@Ohara-the-Fox Agree with this one 😂

@@leslieloud17 speak English
I read it as a health thing without saying "health" specifically. Comparing the early Franky to now, he's lost a lot of energy, and it's probably hard on the vocal cords. I presume Yao feels that he's lost the ability and just can't perform Franky to the standard he wishes. So rather than saying "I'm sick" or "I'm just retiring", he's wording it as giving another VA the chance to perfect the role and do it justice.
I think your perspective on this is actually really fair and absolutely a problem with the straw hat that i do agree the "grand line crew" except for robin is really like underperforming? they have really mediocre or little role in most of the after timeskip arcs and maybe thats one of the reason for his retirement but i think the main reason is just simply his age, apart from whether or not he has a health issue (praying the best for him tho absolutely), his voice is definitely changes bit by bit as he get older and older while franky is still the same age of franky that we know for like 10 years or so and maybe for him its just the right time to pass the torch to the newer generation for somebody to voice the franky that we know and love but also the franky that Kazuki Yao-san envisioned, truly will miss his "SUUUUUUUUUPERRR" but wishing all the best for him and his retirement hopefully all things goes well. Great vid as always manu, appreciate it!
Just a recommendation. Do more of these types of videos in between your highly produced content. It was chill.
Kazuki Yao, the voice actor for Franky in One Piece, announced his departure from the role due to a combination of factors. Over the years, Yao experienced a disconnect with the ideal portrayal of Franky, which he found increasingly frustrating. Additionally, his health had been deteriorating, making the demanding role of voicing Franky more challenging .
Yao expressed sadness over his departure but assured fans that a "super replacement" would take over the role. His legacy as Franky's voice will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by fans.
It's always tough to see a beloved voice actor step down, but it's also exciting to see who will bring their own unique touch to the character. Would anyone like to share their thoughts on who might be a good fit to replace Kazuki Yao ?
Im really happy that someone also thought the same thing about Franky and Brook. THANKS FOR POINTING IT OUT
Yeah i have to agree with you Ohara. I miss the old Franky pre timeskip
I was really hoping and wishing to get Franky some big moments in Egghead arc because of Vegapunk. Honestly, all of the Straw hats in Egghead arc feels like an NPC which Merphy Napier had a criticize with. The side characters were the biggest highlights in Egghead
Hopefully this Elbaph arc, the Straw Hats will get some of the best moments especially Usopp
I think the whole "gap" comment was a very Japanese way of saying "I'm not living up to my own standards for Franky." Nothing like, "I disagree with where Oda's taken Franky"
I’m not surprised tbh. You can already hear the string and stress sometimes in Franky’s voice. I think he probably doesn’t feel as easy to pull out the same performance with aging vocal chords. We oftentimes forget that voice acting is in a way a physical job. You need your voice instruments to be in a good enough condition to perform as you envisioned.
I think what he means is that his voice has been on the decline and he can no longer go all out like he used to. I really started to notice it in Wano where his voice sounded less excited(?), if that makes sense.
I saw someone point out that the same thing is happening to Marge's VA on The Simpsons. I haven't watched in ages, but recent clips of her voice are really rough. 20+ years of doing scraggly voice really takes its toll on people.
This may be a hot take but I'm not sure how much more character development Frankie can get. His arc from childhood was learning to love and value his creations for what they are and he's done that. His dream was to build the ultimate ship that would travel the world like Tom did for Roger. He's living that dream now. He's the first strawhat to achieve their dream basically. Where the others still have a ways to go in achieving their dreams he's currently living his.
This is a small problem, one piece at all. In fact, voice actors do get replaced. I remember when a voice actress was replaced briefly during an arc or movie chopper. Voice actress was replaced
Yeah, and i dont want to hear that voice ever again on Chopper, it was too weird, didn't feel like Chopper at all. Same for Whitebeard, even though i'm getting used to it. The only voice changes i liked was for Kizaru and Jinbei.
Not sure about why Chopper va took a break but the Nami and Robin voice actress took a break in the little garden and after that I want to live scene from the Enies lobby for Maternity leave. Maybe the same was for Chopper va?
@@guildmasterri5995 yes it was the same reason, she was pregnant during the water 7 saga.
They actually found someone who can replicate Kazuki Yao's voice as Franky. I find that hard to believe, given how unique Kazuki's voice is and I don't think I heard any other VA that can sound like him
Very sad... and the german VA Frank Engelhardt has died a few weeks ago...
Although I am sad he is gone I am glad he is taking care of himself he really looks like he need's time to himself. His retirment from this role got me thinking of more voice actors who have played these roles for decades both in anime and in America, Like I am glad they are still with us but I wonder how long they could keep going with this?
Thank you Kazuki Yao for helping bringing this perverted cyborg to life, and I hope you have a SUUUUUUUUPERRRRRRR rest of your life.

Franky singing and driving his motorcycle into Big Moms face is one of my favorite parts of Wano 👌🎶
Yo! Loving the relaxed vibe your putting off (leaning back hands on head) your really stepping into your stride man. You’re making it look effortless, talking to a camera is a lot more difficult than n e 1 can imagine…
Goodbye to a legend. Unfortunately, I don't expect this to be the last. I would not be surprised that their is a full new main cast by the time show ends....as for our legend stepping away I don't think its a direction of the character. I believe its a matter of him giving the performance he wants vs what he can give. Nothing more nothing less. I respect him recognizing his health and stepping back. Man is a legend. Much Much respect.
In my opinion, every straw hat is essential regardless if we think they played an integral part to that arc they always do play an integral part. How? Think of the straw hats as chest pieces, if you take one piece off the board, you’re gonna have a lot harder time winning or just defending the king. Try not to think about how they directly affect the narrative and move it forward but think about how they affect the world around them and how that will affect the story. Like if Frankie wasn’t in Wano, who would fight the triceratops guy? If Frankie wasn’t there, what if that triceratops guy went to back up King, and Zorro had to one 1v2 king and the triceratops guy? Do we really think Zorro would have beaten that fight? With Zorro defeated king and the triceratops guy would go onto the next strawhat and the next until they get to Kaido to help him take out Luffy. And Robin versus black Maria if Robin wasn’t there, how could Sanji have survived that fight? There is a quote from chest “there are times when a well-placed pawn is stronger than a king”. The straw hats are more important than just the roles they are given on the ship. 💯‼️
Character development really is a tricky thing to balance here as yes the first half of the crew has had more development but they've also been around much longer and went through many arcs together. Looking at the arcs from when they were brought in we've had basically this:
Sabaody Archipelago Arc: No real development here since it was mostly introducing the other Worst gen. and splitting everyone up
Impel Down ---> Summit War: Mostly following Luffy trying to get back to the others, saving Ace and showing their backstory
Time Skip back to Sabaody Archipelago Arc: Just everyone reuniting
Fishman Island Arc: More of a focus on how everyone has gotten stronger while setting up the arcs yet to come
Punk Hazard and Dressrosa: Felt more focused on other characters rather than the main crew but argument could be made for Usopp who unintentionally helped form the Straw Hat fleet
Zou Arc: Developed the Samurai more
Whole Cake Island Arc: Huge development for Sanji and some for Carrot
Wano Arc: Some development for Zoro and establishing Yamato but mostly focused on the Samurai
Egghead Island Arc: Development for for Bonney and showing what's happening around the world
So really it's hard to say that the Grandline crew are getting the short end of the stick here when pretty much every arc after their introduction hasn't really focused on any of the main crew except for Sanji. The argument of where the Grandline crew really got most of their development feels kind of mute when most of their development happened IN the arc where they're suppose to join the crew, they needed all of that development to establish them before they officially joined and it happened to be poor timing that right after you had them all get separated, miss a major event in history (minus Luffy who played a big part in it), reunited and went right down the Yellow Brick Road to focus on the Samurai. Sanji is pretty much the only crew member since the time skip that has had any MAJOR character development, so by focusing on the Grandline crew and saying they haven't gotten any focus since the time skip, well that's shunning the fact that everyone else in the crew (minus Sanji) hasn't either. The most each tends to get is a new item or ability with only Usopp, Chopper, Franky and Brook not really getting a new item or ability, yes most of that is the Grandline crew but with Usopp also being shorted and Robin being in the mix it once again sort of calls into question this argument that the Grandline crew are being shorted.
Personally I think the others will get a new item or ability before the end, but any Super Major character development like when they were introduced most likely won't happen this late in the story unless there are many more arcs to go, and even then it's not just the Grandline crew getting shorted, everyone is getting shorted more character development but I blame it more on the focus being on new characters potentially joining the crew and the goal of getting things ready for the end of the story.
I think it's primarily age and health reasons. Franky had an important role in Dressrosa and it's been a while but he was big on wanting to stay and help the Tontattas then of course Senor pink and then also destroying the S.M.I.L.E. factory. That was huge goal in the arc not to mention setting up Wano. One thing I wish would have been explored more are the different voices/characters depending on what he's drinking. That was such a fun moment with Chopper and Franky.
I love this new video setup you have. It's more relaxing than your usual and gives time to breathe for viewers as we feel hype most of the time on your videos. You should continue your usual setup, while doing this relaxing setup from time to time.
Even frankys voice actor was annoyed that franky got nothing in egghead when it should have been he's arc (or at least a stronger focus on him).
jk (slightly). No one knows what he actually meant by his statement because it was intentionally left ambiguous. But personally I disagree with people saying its about his age and being unable to do frankys voice as well as he envisions. There hasn't been any visible decline in his performance and its not like frankys current character is too demanding in a performance. Heck half of his lines in the past few arcs feel like you could literally copy and paste the sound files from older arcs and most people wouldn't even notice.
Actors (yes voice actors too) get attached to characters they play especially when theyve been doing them for like 20 years. I can understand frustration where it feels like your character isn't progressing and instead is relegated to just saying catchy lines in the back most of the time. And since wano started, it does feel like half the strawhats seem like an after thought in the story. So if that is the reason, I don't blame the guy for wanting to put more energy into a character that has more substance and less into a glorified catch phrase machine.
00:27 WDYM you're getting off Sunny??? YOU ARE SUNNY!! Look at your wanted picture man!!
In my opinion its not a big problem, when people get old as well and using your voice 24/7 while making such shrill towns of course your voice box is gonna suffer. Honestly I am happy he's stepping down instead of his health declining even more.
The reason why Kazuki Yao said that he was starting to move away from his vision of Franky is because of his voice. Just listen to his voice in the Fishman Island retelling and then just go to his Wano voice. The man is slurring like crazy. He could not even do the SUUUPER voice anymore. People have brought up that issue almost 5 years ago when Wano started.
I think you did well this video, I'm glad you acknowledge your concerns like mentioning the negativity. As a fan it's definitely a little difficult to just hear it when I have full faith in Oda and know he'll develop these characters, but you voiced your thoughts well.
Takagi Wataru is now the current voice / under study of django because episode 1,121 was not the first time that Takagi voice Django in the 2000s for a theatrical short
Ok, so what do you think Oda should do with Franky, Chopper, and Brook because I honestly don't see much he can do with those three.
I feel that the more forward we move the less we get from the relationship between the Strawhats. I feel the same thing has happened to Zoro, Nami and with Sanji. There are no more deep conversations between them. They are just walking together to achieve their own goals but you already know they are friends. We haven't gotten a breather for the Strawhats where they are just chilling in the Sunny for a long time. I do feel like we missed that great development with Franky on Egghead though. U_U
I think a lot of people feel a bit frustrated with some characters developments. We expected some kinda of growth/upgrade for Franky in Egghead, but nothing. Zoro got some in Wano but a lot of fans wanted more I think. Next on the list is Ussop... Kinda of afraid of his arc in Elbaf to feel short
He really deserved this. The man has been with us for several chapters, so we had to say our farewells to him. And we still love him for not only being Franky, but for staying with us in this long roundabout.
Do more of these videos. This was really nice. The "well produced" videos are too fast with the cuts. I just wanna chill lol
Fucking fair play to him, I am utterly shocked most iconic VAs are sitll doing this stuff.
I mean, Masako Nazawa is STILL doing Goku and thats just... Wow.
It effects US stuff too, I mean look at the Simpsons. Common sentiment now is "Please let Marges VA rest" because she seems to have noticeably ruined her voice over the years.
The fact that Franky is still a middle age man, and hes 65 and clearly unwell. Of course hes not going to see himself in Franky anymore, it certainly makes sense to me and I have respect that he can step back.
I think when he says there’s been a gap between him and his vision of Franky, he’s mainly talking about his own performance for the character recently. He feels like he’s not cut out for the job anymore, I’d assume probably due to age or health reasons. So I personally don’t believe he’s criticizing the direction Oda decided to take with Franky, more so he just feels like he’s not cut out for the job anymore so he’s deciding to part ways with his character. Maybe I understood it wrong but that’s just how I saw it 🤷🤷
Honestly, I saw this coming. Well heard it coming. Ever since a little before Egghead, his voice has sounded like he just got back from dental surgery, like he had a mouth full of cotton balls. That comes off rude I know, but I heard something off in his voice and I presumed he was having health issues. If that's the case, it makes sense he'd have to retire.
Honestly I get it. His "SUUUPERRRR"s have been getting a little weaker over the years, so I'm not surprised.
Have a good retirement, king
3:57 this has nothing to do with the story revolving around franky. its all just because his voice cant bring that prime franky back out. nothing to do with how oda writes franky in the story
Does anyone watch One piece in Eng Dub its awesome too.
Also, Franky vooce definitely deserves a well deserved break, well done and thank you for all these years🙏
when I first read the post from Kazuki Yao I didn't think of his comment on the gap between his vision and what was portrayed like a possible disagreement,, but for a while now I have felt like Franky, brook, chopper, and jinbei have NOT played much of a role in one piece like they used to. ofc the exact reasons and issues leading up to him quitting probably won't be revealed, but this idea also makes sense. Franky no longer has the impact or screen time that he did before and it might have been disheartening for kazuki. simply wondering what lead up to him quitting isn't bad so I do see your point. even if kazuki did not mean it that way, I think there should be another discussion on how some characters have been pushed to the side and their developments has slowed down/changed. I wanna see more Franky, usopp, chopper, brook, and jinbei without feeling like they're irrelevant characters giving off the vibe of silly pet, weird uncles, or weird cousin🤣😅

It's definitely his health. I doubt he'd walk away at this point for any other reason.

06:20 My bro. Franky was the one keeping Luffy in check at the beginning of Dressrosa.
@@Dlynquent that was over a decade ago though
Since the start of the Egghead arc in the anime, I knew Franky's VA would retire soon; his voice has changed significantly.
Goodbye Legend.
I do agree with your points and I think you made a good analysis. But like someone else pointed out here, I believe the gap between him and Franky that Kazuki Yao meant is his energy as he is getting older.
I think he might be saying that his health is affecting how he is portraying the character
I think the only thing that can replace Kazuki Yao's voice would be AI. His voice is so iconic and recognizable it would be nearly impossible to replicate that. Same thing goes for example the VA of Ceasar Clown (and Eric the Whirlwind in the filler Warship Island Arc) who also does Frieza and Tambourine in de DB franchise, Ryūsei Nakao. No one can replace such an iconic voice. Also Sabo's VA has recently announced graduating from his role.
This is sad. I was just telling my brother about how he was my favorite vocalist on the cast. He's earned the joy of retirement though and I wish him godspeed and smooth sailing.
Sakura Tenge as well, these people are aging and they want to rest peacefully now. Already had successful careers in thier life
I think Chopper is still getting more attention than the others but Franky and Jinbe especially don’t get much dialogue even
Dam Goodbye Kazuki Yao thank you for voicing my Goat Franky for 25 year 🙏❤️❤️
Lowkey kinda cute how little zoro and luffy are looking you while talking to the camera
I'm just surprised that we got no backstory or character development in Egghead Island. Everybody was thinking that Frankie would get some kind of time to shine.
【Sunglasses Pirates】Franky's character was made Mr. Kazuki Yao:s voice in mind, he's the only Straw hat who was designed this way and i feel like the old age of Franky's voice actor has kept him away from the spotlight which also could have made the voice actor make that comment & quit but i think the old age & health factors are the real reason behind quitting the role
The core cast of Straw Hat already reach senior age. Some of them even almost reach 70 (IIRC, it's the VA for Luffy and Nico Robin), and I'm not surprised if one of them decided to step down because of age. I think for Franky, as someone who had seen the blueprint of Pluton, may had important role in later arc when the crew found the ancient weapon.
For Kazuki Yao-san, I hope he's doing well, so he may watch the end of One Piece one day.
Pretty sure what Kazuki Yao meant by the "gap" is that he no longer feels give Franky the voice that he deserves. Whether it's just age or if he's having health issues, he's no longer feeling "super" enough to be Franky.
And honestly, it's been a while coming. It's been noticeable that Mr. Yao doesn't have as much energy to his voice as he used to.
Kazuki Yao already stated back then during Marineford War Arc, he cannot and unable to reprise his role as Bon Clay anymore after the arc concluded due to his throat. What's important from it is Kazuki decision affects Oda as Bon Clay remained left behind for good so Kazuki can still voiced Franky as long as he can. Now, his successor will have a heavy task ahead as the next "Nightmare of Baldimore".
I can understand why he said that, i was hoping Egghead arc would be Franky and Chopper centered, maybe Franky upgrading the Sunny or helping vegapunk develop a new weapon to fight yhe gorosei
I kinda like this kind of unedited chill commentary about the One Piece world. Please have more.
Honestly, I gotta say I prefer these "low-editing", more chill videos. Please keep them coming!
To me it feels like the gap is talking about his performance diminishing in quality and not being good enough to be the Franky he wants to be, but I don't speak Japanese so idk if that actually fits with his choice of words
Honestly, as interesting as the whole video was, talking about Franky's role in the crew, I got what he meant right away because I have been noticing a shift in Franky's voice for the last couple of years, at some point around the raid on Onigashima. His voice just sounded muffled and lower as of late. Franky is all about that explosive energy, "OW! LET'S GO, SUPER LEAVE IT TO ME!!", you know? Same with Bon Clay. They're characters that scream a lot. Knowing what he has been able to deliver in the past, and comparing it to what he has been able to deliver lately, I know it must be frustrating as a voice actor to want to give more than what you can. But as a man he has to force his voice more to reach those highs than say, Luffy's voice actress.
Of course it'd be great if Franky played a bigger role in the story, but unless you want to suggest that Oda didn't give him any big scenes due to concerns for his health, I don't think him retiring from the role would be related to Franky being more on the sidelines.
This is definitely one of the things I've been afraid of because of One Piece's length, and it's even more worrisome come the remake. This is really saddening to hear, because for me he will only ever be the true voice of Franky to me, but I understand why he's stepping down. I'm sure (and hoping) the replacement will do Franky justice but I'm still really sad about this. It will never be quite the same without him. Farewell Kazuki Yao.
This is kinda the nail in the coffin, that the remake will probably have an entirely new cast of va
Oda is in an impossible situation. He has to balance the story and characters, while being as economical as possible. Plus his health is an issue. Based off the chapters this year, I think he’s doing his best to wrap this story up.
Man it'll suck if all of the voice actors now retire to be replaced by new ones right towards the end. Hopefully we'll still have the majority of these voice actors stick around.
Having not enough 1 on 1 conversations/interactions and less focus on certain character is certainly a thing, BUT the most confusing thing in One Piece, which is meme'd too death and back again for being "too long", is that it is still way too short. Because these interactions need to be thought of very well to be meaningfull/funny/good enough to be spent time on. It's just not enough time.
14:50 it could also be a possibility that franky might be getting a cyborg throat at some point. Coz in that case he might get a robotic voice, which the current voice actor might not have envisioned for him 🤷.
The last real cool stuff I remember from Franky is his fight with Senor Pink.
I remember watching Water 7 and Enies Lobby and saying, wow this Franky dude is so cool and awesome, the way he burned the blueprints man, that was something.
I think a lot of people are disappointed that Franky did basically nothing on Egghead even though he had an established Vegapunk connection. So a lot of people thought that Egghead was going to, at least partially, be Franky's arc. But it was actually Bonney and Kuma's. Maybe we needed a couple extra chapters where, when learning the Sunny was Soda powered (which Vegapunk was thoroughly surprised by), they had geeked out together a bit, and then, while not necessarily accomplishing anything because the enemies were too strong, Franky showed up with a new gadget to try and turn the tide of the fight vs Saturn and/or the Elders as a whole in a diagetic way that didn't interfere with the emotional stuff that was put forth with the flashbacks and stuff. I don't think it needed to be HIS arc, but I think he should have had a bit more to do with it. Maybe also set up more of a friendship between he and Lilith since she was gonna be he survivor that goes on to actually sail with the crew for a while. Or have that friendship start coming up NOW at least since she is coming with us.
We know not every strawhat can be a massive part of any given arc. But the fact that Franky had a legit reason to have MORE of an impact than normal and didn't have ANY I think is why people are starting to doubt the importance of a lot of the post Grand Line crew. Chopper at least had that heartfelt talk with those gigantified kids on punk hazard and that stuff with Queen on Wano so tbh I'm actually decently happy with Chopper content, not that I wouldn't want more. Same kinda goes for Brook who's been such a low key MVP here and there. But...Franky may as well not exist. Sunny never takes damage, he has no emotional scenes, he doesn't show his immense loyalty and confidence to Luffy very much nor shown his spirit, and despite being stronger than Usopp or Nami technically (Though Nami's attack power has of course risen to scary levels thanks to Zeus), he has no outstanding fights really (except maybe his manly respect of the Hard Boiled Senor Pink) no background MVP stuff, no big emotional moments, etc. Like we've literally discovered TWO Ancient Weapons, and strongly hinted to have seen the 3rd in action, one of which is literally the one that he knows the blueprints of, and...nothing. Ancient weapons talked about? Nothing. Meeting his engineering idol and pseudo teacher/mentor? Nothing. It seems like every opportunity that makes sense to have him even slightly be apart of, he's been pushed to the side and given nothing. The closest thing to cool moments he gets is Usopp, Chopper, and Luffy's reactions to his cool robots.
Hello, @Ohara ! Cheers! One thing that disappoints me about One Piece discussion... Franky has 800 parallels and references in Egghead.
The entire Egghead arc and storylines seem to parallel Franky's story. Franky's directly involved in the lore, mystery, and story of Egghead; but many people discount the connections.
Imagine we get a Void Century story, and Franky built Joy Boy's substitute-brother - in the image of himself... EMETO! This mirrors Fullmetal Alchemist, with Emeto being Alphonse, Joy Boy being Edward.
Imagine we get a story of Joy Boy's enemy, and the enemy has a problem with non-human insects... Like the 50%human/50%Robot... Franky. Or Emeto.
Or the opposition detests a fishman/human, or a non-human ancient weapon, like Shirahoshi, or Zunesha... These are like Joy Boy's nakama.
Franky got 50% stoned by S-Snake... Because he's 50% human. Franky's Arc, Water 7, was split 50/50 with another character, Robin... Because he's 50% human!
Chopper's arc was short... Because he's small! 😀
What is human? What is a ship? Ship of theseus? Is Franky human? Is Emeto? Was Joy Boy? And Imu-sama? And Saturn... Sanji said Saturn threw away any pretenses of being human.
Your 'biblical references' video was SUUUUPER! @Ohara !
I'm gonna miss him too, he had such a iconic voice that brought so much charm to characters.
He's also been the voice of ZZ Gundam's protagonist, Judau Ashta, for the past 38 years. Hard to stay sounding 14-15 for that long. EDIT: They should animate Crossbone Gundam so he can voice Judau's alternate identity from when he is 59 years old, Grey Stoke
my heart drops after reading the title, not because of the news but because i thought ohara gonna make a theory out of this ngl
Yeah I'm pretty sure his comment is literally just him commenting on the gap in voice quality from the Franky he does now to the Franky he did back then. Listen to any episode he's in from the past year or so and its pretty apparent he was running into some difficulty with his pronunciations and diction, I have my own theories as to what health problems could cause him to sound like that, but I'm not gunna speculate. Speaking of speculation, I think that, while your complaints about the diminished role about the latter-half Strawhats are pretty valid, I honestly think it's a little rude to assume Mr. Yao would leave the show on the grounds that his character isn't getting enough screen time, especially in the face of his health visibly (and auditorily) declining. I love your videos Ohara, truly, but I think this is one's off. Yao's been nothing but a professional, to try and attribute his leaving the show to something as petty as a lack of screen time is a little cooked.
to expand your thoughts.. maybe egghead was the last chance for kazuki to see franky have actual development and that was cut due to oda's health issues and wrapping up one piece in a more direct manner. since it didnt happen and he probably has a contract to fulfil, my guess is that he'll complete egghead arc and then leaves the character. i do hope, that oda finds his way around to give some tasks to the lesser represented characters.. right now the strawhats might as well consist of luffy, zoro, jinbei, sanji and nami and be done with it. robin obviously earnes her right to still exist because poneglyphs. which is a bit of a shame, but i think we're at the point where oda realizes that he maybe made too many characters to give them all the screentime the characters deserve. not to critizise oda too much, but i think in retrospect he might have done things differently from how they turned out
SUUUUUUPAAAAA goodbye you absolute legend 😭😭😭
Its a rare thing fot voice actors in Japan to leave their characters
I thinks he didn't want to directly mention about his health or maybe he wants to retired himself and wanted some excuses to leave franky without facing criticism commitment is very important in Japan i guess
That's really sad, but Im glad he's doing what's best for him. I wish him all the best!!❤
definitely do these more but maybe for more serious news like this. the 6 month anime hiatus wouldve been a good one
I get what you're saying and it's totally valid, guys like brook, franky and chopper haven't had much screen time, character development or whatsoever. But you also have to consider that One Piece in general still have a long way to go and there's still a lot of things that needs to happen, tons of characters that needs to somehow appear at some point, and of course tons of questions that needs to be answered. Oda is not getting any younger as well, and when you consider all that and try to somehow compress it in probably like 5yrs or so, it would be very hard to focus on a character development of an individual who doesn't have much bigger role at the end game. Given that Oda is also fighting with his age, he is trying to use his time on focusing on events that really matters which will impact the outcome of the story. Hence, i feel like Kazuki Yao just caught up with his age as well, and the gap that he feels is that he is still portraying the same Franky which is this goofy with lots of energy who technically still the same age in the storyline. Meanwhile Kazuki after all these years have aged significantly and he can no longer keep up with the energy required by his character.
But regardless, Kazuki is a legend and will always be this suuuuuuuper icon. At the end of the day, we should appreciate the anime that we love and the road that it's heading to. Much love One Piece nakama ❤
