This video is like therapy for me right now. I am really going through it right now with a broken skin barrier from retinoids. It’s so hard and painful and every day feels like a nightmare. I hope I can heal mine too.
Kelly, I went through the same thing with congestion on my cheeks. Long story short, it cleared after 3 years of drying my skin out with products and finally repairing my barrier so my skin could heal and respond to active ingredients in a smart way. You are so knowledgeable and have wonderful suggestions that I’m eager to add to my routine. Thank you, especially, for explaining to me how to identify oils that will be beneficial for my skin. Your information is so timely and I’m very grateful.
Really glad this helped Becky, it's a long and winding road learning about what works for your skin and more importantly learning your skin's flow instead of trying to force it!
I find that washing my face with just water with aveeno oatmeal bath treatment helps especially mornings, I will add aveeno oats to my water to soften my hard water. I don't do this all the time only when my skin is needing extra tlc. Don't rinse the aveeno off but use your moisturiser on damp skin.
Thank you this was such a great video! My skin was so clear until a few months ago. I started over exfoliating and not realizing it (using The Ordinary AHA BHA peel weekly among other things). I was destroying my moisture barrier. I have been having new break outs for months not realizing what the problem was. Of course I treated them with harsh actives to get rid of them but it only made them worse. I hope when I start my new gentle hydrating routine that my skin will clear up. I miss having clear skin 😔😭
@@damirn.647 Yes, overall I'd say it did work. I still have some texture and big pores on my forehead and I get a pimple or two here and there but it's so much better than before. My skin looks so much healthier. I've actually stopped washing my face and I use miscellar water to cleanse then I rinse it off. Then I apply 3 layers of hada labo premium on my damp skin, let that sink in, then I use neutrogena hydro boost gel cream, then CeraVe cream. At night I seal it all in with Vaseline, which is what made the biggest difference to me. I'm trying out Elta MD UV clear as my sunscreen during the day. This routine has helped so much!
I just had a few blemishes before. So, I bought a TON of korean skincare and use it and exfoliate like crazy. Aha, bha, bp, vit C.. everything.. now my skin is filled with closed comodones and is far worse than before. I will take your advice and stop everything! Thank you so much for your advice!
@@t-.-t. how is your skin now?, I’m suffering with so much closed comedones and my face is so dull and dead, I think it’s because of my damaged skin barrier, and if you fixed it, how did you do so?, thank you
I damagedre barrier using retinol and vitamin c too much. I stopped everything except using a mild clenser, jojoba oil and a face cream with dimethicone to lock in the moisture. My skin healed in about 3 weeks...
This video is sooo perfect in time. I have many products to try and can relate to the anxiety of trying everything as quick as possible, now I will be cautious, thanks
I love this. Im almost 5 months on Differin and while it cleared up my skin. My skin has gotten dehydrated. Im stopping it now to focus on healing my skin.
Congrats on clearing your skin! Focusing on hydration now and taking things one step at a time to see how your skin does in its new clear state is a wise decision!
@@KellyDriscoll Yes! Funny thing is before I went on Differin I went a month without actives to make sure my skin barrier wont be compromised by Differin. I think I didnt really build up my skin barrier back then so Im taking things seriously this time. Your videos are so helpful!
Always late to the party but my skins damaged (not through exfoliation, that actually scares me) but through misuse of harsh products and too acidic products. I'm almost a week into a new skincare routine full of ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, HA and Niacinamide. And for the first time in ages, my skin doesn't feel as angry? (still get incredibly hot and burning cheeks but the moment I hydrate and do my routine, they calm down). Thank you for this video honestly! 🙏
For a long time I suffered with acne and I have tired everything and seen multiple dermatologist too but nothing worked until I came across your channel and saw your video about damaged skin and everything you said about the sign and symptoms of damaged skin I have it and tired some of of the products that you recommend and have seen great results. When all this while I thought I had acne but it was just that I had over done my skin with acne medication and over exfoliated my skin . Thanks A ton for your sharing your story and for helping . Keep it up .sending you lots of love .💕and wishing you all the best .
The timing of this video couldn’t be more perfect!! I’ve been trying to heal my barrier and just couldn’t stop spot treating my acne breakouts with exfoliants during the process. Thanks for reiterating how important it is to just drop it lol
So happy to know this was helpful! It really is the 1 factor that allowed my skin to heal up quickly! You'll want to lay off until your skin is healed. It is different for everyone between 4-8 weeks. You'll know when your skin is no longer tight, burning and seems to be holding moisture through the day. In the meantime, I put together a list of products I love that gently treat acne WITHOUT exfoliation so these might give you some ideas of how to treat your acne while you heal! th-cam.com/video/dM_GfK8ubGM/w-d-xo.html
2nd this. Damaged and dehydrated my skin upping retinol serum among all my brightening serums etc in rotation. I'm not a newbie to skincare nor sensitive skin at all among oily and breakout prone all my life never dry. So absolutely baffled my skin even had this reaction I'm still trying to bounce back from over a month later. Endless dehydrated surface dryness I'm spots only I can see up close and some area of redness and fine lines I never had prior completely visible now have me freaked out. Hearing slowly with videos like this as my normal routine of products to keep me breakout free even if gentle including even gentle cleansers and moisturizers would not fix my battier no matter how much I layered moisturizing serums and creams. I'd still have dry dehydrated patches because as amazing as all I was using was just wasnt helping heal the barrier and lock the moisture oddly. Why I came to my fav skincare channels to get tips for specific products as even with all my knowledge never had experience dehydration or imbalance like this especially after using actives for years and not using anything intense. Live and learn sadly. Best wishes to anyone trying to heal skin as I feel your pain never thinking I would have this scenario per all my knowledge and not using harsh products too quickly. Just shows how quickly skin can change and react out of nowhere! 😅
Your video has been a life saver for me!! Couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m am going through something very similar and your video has not only helped the actual problem, I followed some of your advice and am already seeing progress. But it has also helped me mentally. I’m not a patient person when it comes to skin problems that arise and I was feeling very defeated. After hearing your story and hearing that it could take 4-8 weeks and REQUIRES patience, I took a deep breath and accepted that it’s just gonna take some time. Thank you SO much for sharing your story and advice. Me and my skin (and my sanity) really appreciate you ❤️
Oh I'm so happy to know this is helping! It really is a lesson in patience and will take some willpower but it's totally do-able and so encouraging to hear you're making progress! You can do it!❤
I’ve been doing a similar process to heal my skin moisture barrier for about a year and it’s looking much much better…but now I’m back to breakouts without exfoliation. Do you have a video of what you did next in your daily skincare? Thank you!
Currently going through the same thing due to chemical exfoliation. Thanks for the video. My skin does hate me right now but I’m trying to look after it.
Amen on PATIENCE sister! My skin was damaged when I used ALL of The Body Shop’s Tea Tree line in a 10-step K skincare routine. My WHOLE FACE was covered in inflamed and cystic acne. I was just shattered emotionally, physically, psychologically and FINANCIALLY 😭😭😭 I stopped it immediately and when I discovered Liah Yoo’s channel and her #skincarediet philosophy, I opt for using only the BASICS (cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen). One year has passed and now my skin is better but still suffering from acne marks and PIH. But, I couldn’t ask for more, thinking back to what my skin looked like a year ago. Now that I feel like my barrier has somewhat gotten back its strength, I’m trying to introduce actives again (started with a Vit C derivative, then now on Niacinamide), but my routine is still consisted on more hydrating and barrier-building products. I’ve got a lot on my stash but I’m not rushing on trying all of them at once and I’m being MORE RESPONSIBLE by not buying more of what I already have. 😊 hope this helps anyone lurking on the comments lol 🤗
Btw, I’m glad I came upon your channel coz you introduce a lot of barrier-building products that I’m in search for. And thank you for being very informative in your way of introducing them, not like other skincare youtubers who would introduce a product just for ads or sponsorships. But I do hope you get more sponsorships to support your channel 💕 lots of love from the Philippines 🇵🇭
I think i damaged my already weak barrier by using pixi gloe tonic followed by a sheet mask with fragrance and phenoxyethanol and what not! Lesson to remember - follow chemical exfoliation with a soothing, fragrance free moisturizer or serum!
Hi Kelly. I’m dealing with a damaged skin barrier and trying to nourish my skin back to health. Sometimes I find that my products don’t easily sink in and sit on top of my skin as my barrier is damaged. Is this a side effect of a damaged skin barrier?
Skin saver video 100/10 Last summer at this same time I was so desperate because I was breaking out and I didn't know what to do so I would physically exfoliate TWICE A DAY. I damaged it so much, and my skin is dry, it's never been oily my entire life, so it was more prone to being damaged. That's when I REALLY started getting into skincare. Not just products, but the way our skin works and why these things are happening and how our skin reacts. Currently my skin is still a bit damaged but not as much as It used to. My acne and pigmentatiom on cheeks has gotten worse, but that's because I haven't exfoliated for over 2 months so heh. But my skin doesn't burn anymore yaY! Still on the look for the perfect chemical exfoliator..
Yay so happy this helped and I agree, learning how skin functions is a big part of learning how to properly treat your skin! It's a hard lesson to learn but when you can be patient and treat your skin from the inside (moisture barrier health) instead of just the outward appearance you're setting your skin up for long term success!
@@KellyDriscoll absolutely, patience really is key. Long process for long term results are way more appealing to me than short process for short term results!
after looking at probably HUNDREDS of videos and articles and reddit discussions . this video was by far a life savor . however i do have 1 question . i’m guilty of using chemical exfoliators way too often which as you can guess, caused my moisture barrier to be destroyed . I cut off majority of the possible irritating skin care items. But i have really really oily skin even before damaging my skin barrier . SO my question is how do you go without chemically exfoliating without having dead skin cells build up ( clogged pores or black heads ? ) i’ve had extremely oily skin my whole life even with a healthy skin barrier and i seem to be getting blackheads and clogged pores ESPECIALLY now that i’m not washing my face in the morning .
I want to note that you can still use chemical exfoliation and repair a MB.. I use tretinoin (0.034%), AA (4%), and Niacinamide (5%), and my skin is looking amazing. When using tret, if you stop, the results will stop and reverse... So that's something to keep in mind. Use the lowest % of products as your skin can get away with whilst seeing results. I totally agree though, that if ones skin is terribly, terribly upset and in bad shape, pass on these for a while. :)
Yes it's possible but certainly can slow things down when skin is damaged, my personal experience is what drives this advice as I was not able to make any meaningful progress until I totally stopped! Everyone is different and everyone's skin will respond in different ways but if you want to heal faster and can't seem to make progress, this sometimes is the only thing holding people back!
Thank you much! Your video is very informative as always. Can you please make a Video about how to improve orange peel texture skin?? My skin damage has literally ruined my life..
Make sure you have lots of hydrating layers in your routine which can help plump the skin and make it look smoother. Retinol is the best choice to help tighten the appearance of pores, help treat the texture and help rebuild your damaged collagen structure.
I have a damaged moisture barrier right now for the first time 😩 it is definitely not fun! But I got products that fit your ingredients recommendations so I am starting them tonight 🤞
Listening to the last bit, it's so amazing to hear someone say the words that I say all the time, I get like argh I have to do something then I regret it, and I knew it, and if you had done that sooner you wouldn't be helping nannas like me 😉😊 I also have been diagnosed with body dysmorphia, it was there when my skin was happy, but my skin condition was sudden random and 5 derms, don't know what it it, but I have a gut feeling that my moisture barrier was damaged which left my face open to more and more damage 🤦 now it's been 6 to 7 years, I went from being a loving free spirit who loved being with people to barely leaving the house, I have 3 support workers and 2 psychologists 😔 it was the very top of a giant iceberg, so people like you are shining stars in the lives of people like me, fingers crossed, I have 6 grandchildren to get better for, 🙋🕊️.
I damaged my moisture barrier from scrubbing with salts daily ( so stupid) , using harsh acids and citrus and essential oils tanning too much . What set me over the edge was a high dose of hyaluronic acid . I literally burned off like two layers of my skin it seemed. My skin became like tissue paper and wrinkled at a touch , it’s that bad . I hear you when you say listen to your own skin and not what everyone says to use. So much hype around hyaluronic acid and it ruined my skin . I’m loosing hope though because I’ve tried it all , everything and two years later my skin is still bad getting worse and worse . I can’t find a moisturizer because everything irritates it because of the chemicals and everything recommended has hyaluronic acid which I absolutely cannot use , burns me every time . I’ve tried all recommended creams , I’ve tried natural oils , I don’t cleanse with cleaners anymore . Literally everything burns my face . I’ve spent thousands on over counter creams , expensive creams and Etsy homemade gentle creams without chemicals and nothing works . It allllll burns . I’ve tried all you said in this video too and you have great advice , what you say is all true because I’ve studied this a year , myself and it says to do what you’re talking about but yet nothing is healing my skin :(. I’m feeling as if I damaged my skin beyond repair and it’s probably time for a dermatologist or to get an operation or treatments . I’m so frustrated , even Rosé hip oil burns my skin , my skin doesn’t want anything it seems , but problem is when I just leave it alone and use nothing it gets so dry but yet it says no to every moisturizer I’ve tried it’s ridiculous! Ugh I’m so sad .... thank you for the video but even doing these steps I have no results :(
I've recently realized my skin has become dehydrated, to the point where I've been having the worst breakouts. I've never dealt with acne this way before, and before the past four months or so, my skin has been pretty great. I've even noticed loads of fine lines on my face that weren't there before. I used to get so many compliments on my skin and now it's so dull, cracked, and irritated....it makes me so insecure. The fine lines are the worst part for me because I'm still young and I don't want to look so aged. Will this problem become less noticeable if I begin correctly restoring my moister barrier? Also, would you recommend safflower oil as a facial oil? Thank you for this video.
Img you sound like me! I also have always had really good skin but now it’s dehydrated and so dry and fine lines..... have you been able to remove the fine lines?
Hi. I know its been a long time, I hope your skin is better now. Can you tell how did you tackle these issues of skin that you have listed above? I am also going through the same condition. Please reply.,
Hey there! Short answer yes those are signs something isn't right with your skin. I actually made a video about the signs of a weak or damaged barrier here th-cam.com/video/Xs6hBPfrGD8/w-d-xo.html
Hi Kelly, I hope this comment isn't too late for some of your quality feedback. I'm going to try keep it simple. My skin is severely dehydrated, dry, extremely tight and prone to redness itching and burning. I know my barrier is absolutely shot. Furthermore, it's winter now and my skin ALWAYS gets 5 times more tight and irritated in winter. The good news, I have healed my cystic acne. The complication is that I have closed comodones all over my face, especially on my cheeks and forehead - in certain lighting my skin looks like sandpaper. Because of these comodones I keep being told by dermatologists to use a chemical exfoliant to unblock the pores but every time I tried (I tried with glycolic acid) it irritated my skin so much more and made it even tighter and redder! However, whenever I tried to do the opposite by upping my occlusive moisturising, the comodones get worse. SO in short this is my confusion: If repairing my moisture barrier is meant to clear my skin then why do my comodones become more prominent when I increase hydration? I am so fed up with these skin issues as it affects my confidence so much - I know you understand this. I am so sick of having tight skin with so many fine lines when I am only 30 years old. What would you recommend? Should I switch up to what you have relayed in this video or should I focus on the comodones first? Thank you for your time and energy! Sending love from South Africa.
Your comedones are most likely a symptom of your damaged moisture barrier issues as dehydrated skin (damaged barrier is SEVERELY dehydrated skin) is classically plagued by clogged pores. You really need to heal your skin first and just ignore you comedones right now (not fun advice to hear, I know). It will get worse before it gets better but you have to give your skin the space to heal and come back into balance. When you're almost healed up you will most likely seen an improvement in your comedones but you need to heal your skin first so you can start with the ingredients that will really help you clear those pores over time (chemical exfoliation). And if you don't heal your barrier you will be stuck in a cycle of comedones because your skin just isn't functioning properly and can't regulate itself. It will never get better if it doesn't get healthy. You might need to switch up your products if you feel they are too pore clogging.
Hello Ash Spence,I feel so bad for you...have you worked through your skin issues, has your skin improved ? I have a few suggestions if your skin hasn't improved.
Thanks guys. My skin has improved, not so tight and dry. It's not as dehydrated either but still lots of fine lines when I smile. Still very textured with tons of small comedones. I was using Lamelle Restore Cream, it helped a lot but then noticed my comedones became more pronounced after a few weeks so I stopped. Not sure if I should start with chemical exfoliation now or not.
@@ashspence9804 that's great your skin is not tight or dry anymore, but you still shouldn't have to deal with this alone,I would suggest you go to a site called "paulas choice" there in the menu drop down bar you can go to "help centre" and the you can send them an email outlining all you issues or try a live chat,I have used live chat heaps of times, they are so knowledgeable and helpful..I think live chat is only available during weekdays 7:30 am to 4 pm. I am no expert, but I have also struggled with my skin and have had to do my own detective work aswell as asking others and professionals..but Im pretty sure you can heal your skins barrier with light serums and moisturisers so it doesn't exasperate your acne,if you have already repaired your barrier then they can help you to get your acne under control...hopefully
yesterday I noticed my skin felt really tight, there was flaking around my nose ,temple, and mouth, everytime I put a moisturizer on it stung a little and after a few minutes my skin would go back to feeling dry and flaky, I'm about 90 percent sure my moisturizer barrier is damaged and I just want it to heal in 2 weeks
@@Rimmonin i stopp doing face washes all i did was rinse w water than i put cetaphil cream and if it felt dry i added more but 2 weeks later my skin was not flaky or dry anymore..the new problem now is my acne
@@alinazendejas9928 Ohh godd... I suffer from serious acne too... that's why I was using all those harsh things on my face which dried my skin up :/ Since I posted that comment I've changed my whole skincare routine, I wash with only micellar water and started using the Rovectin Centella balm as my moisturiser :/ It seems to be helping, my skin still gets dry and tight and flakes, but not as horribly as before. And I don't think the Centella balm caused acne for me. Maybe you can try it
This video is serendipity for me! Yesterday, I had my initial extreme red, burning face reaction that you talked about. My face has been on fire all day yesterday and still is now. I viewed several TH-cam posts from trusted skin care bloggers and dermatologists. This morning I only washed my face with water and put on a safe moisturizer with the trinity for moisture barrier repair and rebuilding. I am going to take it very very slow and not add anything back too quickly. So, thank you for you great post!
Hi. Your suggestion to wash the face just once at night with a cleanser and with water only in the morning is pretty helpful. I have sensitive , combination skin with Rosacea type 2. Thank you.
hello kelly, regarding layering toners to fix the moisture barrier, how did u do it? did u pat dry skin until it was completely dry after cleansing and then put on the toners or did u dry the skin a little bit so that it was still damp and then apply the toners? also would an essence still be suitable in replacement of a toner in this step of putting back water into the skin because i know both toners and essence’s purpose is to hydrate the skin. also u stated that u used an oil after this step and then put on the barrier treatment which is a moisturizer, but from my understanding i’ve been told to go lightest to heaviest, which in this case, a moisturizer is water and oil, making it lighter than an oil, but u told us to use an oil first. i would appreciate a response regarding my questions thank u 😊
Omg currently going through this and the dermatologist thinks its rosacea, I tried the gel for rosacea and it made it even worse. I tried to explain to her that I had a facial that changed my skin to the worse
Thank you !! I finally know what's wrong with .y skin I also damaged my skin with BHA my skin looked like it ages so much in so little time now I know that I'll be ok and I'll repair and take care of my skin now
What I've been doing is I add my spray toner (with humectant) when my face is damp so it could absorb the water better. It feels annoying but supposedly it works. I've heard that oat water (fill a container with oats and let it sink into the water) is a good way to rinse in the morning if the water is too alkaline. It supposed to help with moisture
I've heard that about the oat water too, just been too lazy to try it out! 😂I actually enjoy a nice rinse with pure, chilled green tea, great for irritation and helps with redness too!
LaMarge I’ve used the oat water tip (rinsed my face with it and soaked cotton pads in it and left it on my skin like a mask) and this helped my irritated and damaged skin SO SO much! Doing this everyday for about a week, along with not washing my face with cleanser (water only) and using rosehip oil with weleda skin food on top, pretty much repaired my skin completely!
S S 5 feel like this I’m more informative then the video 😂! Just putting regular water on my face burns I don’t understand how you can have a damaged skin barrier and still use an exfoliant. Like I would literally be crying if I did that it would hurt so bad!
You can do either way! My reasoning for before moisturizer is because high linoleic acid oil (best for moisture barrier care) penetrates deeper into your skin, while high oleic acid oils don't dive as deep into your pores and act as a more occlusive moisture locking agent, which makes them most appropriate for layering on top of moisturizer.
Thank you for this! I’ve spent almost 3 years trying to figure out my skin.. I will definitely use this video and info to try to heal my barrier and see wonderful skin! 🤞
saying the truth cleansing oil was a gamechanger for me, i was also using BHA 1-2 times a week and healing my skin barrier was the next very important thing!
saying the truth i have been using bha from cosrx, and any cleansing oil with good opinions will do. For the barrier, stratia’s liquid gold have done wonders for me but also TO niacinamide 10% serum is my fav till this day
Omg i will try this..I hope it helps at least it all make sense now why I am having all the burned face after eating! Very Dry skin, red cheeks and almost swollen all the time with inflammation. All this due to a mistake made in my teenage years where i used full makeup and never washing my face in the evening! If this will work i bless u with all my heart
Hi kelly, im sure after 3 months of good skincare i finally strengthen my skin barrier. No active acne but acne marks are left. Want to use vitamin c serum for thise. Is vitamin c good or damaging to skin barrier?
Hi Kelly! Have you tried derma rolling before? I’ve been thinking about it coz the little holes on my nose area are becoming noticeable. Dont know what you call these but i got them back in the day when I wasnt into skincare yet and i had lots of blackheads and whiteheads that I pick out using tweezers and nose peels. Arrgg hope i make sense. Just looks really annoying.
I haven't used derma rollers, I'm a bit scared of them to be honest! 🙈Sounds like enlarged pores? I think the only thing that will help the appearance of your pores is BHA exfoliation, because that will clean and keep out the gunk that's making them appear large!
Kelly Driscoll i’m also scared to use them but seeing these craters formed from, perhaps trauma when I forced the extraction with tweezers due to ignorance is a bit frustrating. I hope bha and a good collagen product will help though.. now that I have a good skincare routine, i’m able to get rid of these blackheads and whiteheads in a gentler way..
May I know is it okay to use Benton aloe bha toner n Missha ceramide Pha cream since both do contain a physical exfoliating properties but Benton at low % Or should I use serum ? My skincare routine currently to restore skin barriers is 1.Benton aloe bha toner 2.Benton propolis soothing gel 3.Missha ceramide PHA cream 4.Etude house sunscreen
I wouldn't recommend continuing the use of the Benton BHA toner or the Missha Ceramide PHA cream. These will continue to irritate your skin and potentially delay your healing process.
Hi kelly I brought the products, which order should I go in? Is there some I use only at the morning and some at night? Like how you said the cleanser is for only night? I’m new to this and just want to know the order of what I should do and thanks
Ditto, scrubbing off eye makeup with bar soap and using bha cleanser toner moisturizer everything. We all have that clueless teen mentality that we can scrub away acne snd oiliness especially when you have no one to show you better. What caused my obsession and love with learning about skincare and exhausting and expensive as endless trials were for years. Se la vie! 😅
I have damaged my skin barrier using too many actives first two weeks i used dr dennis gross alpha beta peel extra strength pads twice a week also alternating every night used tlc framboos glycolic night serum and weekly drunk elephant sukari baby facial weekly straight for a month and got severe itchiness redness and bad breakout cystic all over cheeks and jaw
Everything is the same as this video tutorial th-cam.com/video/qxILr1mfl2w/w-d-xo.html only difference is eyeshadow is peripera sugar twinkle in kitten beige!
Raven Uribes if you are certain that your barrier has healed, you can introduce AHAs into your routine again but starting with gentle ones at low concentrations e.g mandelic acid or lactic acid and then gradually bumping it up over time. It's important you keep your skin hydrated, look for products with glycerin, hyaluronic acid and make sure your regimen has a lot of hydration for your skin.
@@vl1xrz yes!! That's what I was thinking of doing! My skin is so flaky so I'm trying to find an exfoliator with lactic acid. Was thinking the ordinary 10% and then diluting in a serum because the 5% for bad reviews. Have you tried either of those?
I mean tough love here, you gotta deal with it! Healing your skin and getting it back to a strong state is the best defense against acne. When you barrier is weak it's more prone to breakouts and using exfoliants or AA is just going to continue the cycle. A few weeks of breakouts for strong and healthy skin is not a big deal. I know it's tough, I struggled too but you gotta change your mindset about what healthy skin really is.
Hi from Greece!!! I damaged my skin barrier using the famous red mask from ordinary, which is TOO STRONG!!! I am trying a whole year to calm it with suitable products...now i am a little better from irritation and dryness... B U T not even one make up suits on me, even these with maximum cover... literally my skin ABSORBS make up within an hour... does anyone has a same experience??? My make up disappeared in an hour...no matter how carefully i made it (primer, fixing spray)
I don't do chemical exfoliation.. but I use physical exfoliants (coffee scrub) I know physical exfoliants cause micro tears but I am scared to try chemical exfoliants now !! Which is better ?
My spf and night moisturizer have hyaluronic acid and my cleanser is the cerave one w salicylic acid. I over exfoliated heavy frequency of potent products. Following your steps to heal my barrier, is it still safe to use those products (my moisturizers and cleanser)? I dont have any back ups 🥺
Hi ! Out of many skincare guru out there, you are my most fav .. your reviews are so pure i keep on buying the products you mentioned , just bought myself cosrx snail and cosrx honey mask for my mom ! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Natasha! Thank you so much, that really means a lot to know you trust my recommendations! I really hope you love the snail essence and your mom loves the honey mask!❤
You can wash with warm (not too hot) water and a washcloth, it's usually all you need to remove excess sebum. Alternatively you can use micellar water, it's less harsh than cleanser. Give it a try and see what you think!
This video is perfect for me at the moment. I will try all of your recommendation. Just a question, for a person who usually use chemical exfoliation, how do u control your blocked pores in this phase? any physical exfoliation?
My moisture barrier was damaged when I got acne lol but I got the same way as her my acne cleared when I used benzoyl peroxide and I thought it was a prevented thing but I guess I didn’t need it anymore all I used was benzoyl now I got red at night
I recently had a very bad reaction to a exfoliant and do occasionally try a new product and react badly. It’s been about a week my skin felt burnt and it peeled and flaked for days and everything I put on it burned the whole time. It’s finally looking better still slightly tender. I’ve only been using Hydrating stuff how long do I need to continue before trying some other stuff. I just got some BHA and vit c in the mail and I’m guessing I need to hold off on using it. Second question I’m guessing I need to do this all again every time I react badly to something?
Please help i have stopped using all the actives that i used to use before like c firma b hydra day serum at morning and stopped exfoliating. Also switched between products often like one night tatcha violet c brightening serum then next night biossance lactic acid. Also used harsh cleanser (tatcha deep cleanse) all the products i wanted to test and ruined my skin got severe acne itchness redness dryness. Also changed my cleanser into first aid beauty
Is it possible that you used beta hydroxy acids instead of azelaic acid? Azelaic acid isn’t highly exfoliating and is generally used to lessen inflammation and kill bacteria instead of exfoliation. It also comes only in 10, 15, and 20% concentrations, while bha is available in the lower concentrations that you mentioned.
But we need to expoliate right especially for matured skin. They say that ingredients will not sink if there's thick layer of dead skin on the top. Do you use BHA, AHA or retinoid?
Hi Kelly in the morning do you go straight to toners? (To hydrate and not to clean) And which one do you recommend? And what about the actives from the night before is it ok that they remain during the day?
Tips from my longtime dermatologist: morning - gently wash the face with a few splashes of water. Pat the face with smooth cloth. It remains wet. Apply hydrating toner, seal the water with a healing moisturizer (LR Posey Cicaplast B5, rich in panthenol, shea and other soooo benefitial ingredients for the skin barrier + great occlusive to retain the water within the skin). Spf. And that's it. No chemical toners, no cleansers. Hope it helps
Thank you so much for this video! Really helpful information. Not many people talk about this. U used so many products (including chemical exfoliation) and didn't understand why it wasn't working.
My moisturize barrier is comprised I’ve been rinsing my face with Luke warm water and using a water cream and an drugstore spf is there a moisturizer I can buy from Sephora with all the ingredients to help my barrier I can’t order on online
In another one of your videos, you recommended AHA/BHA for dehydrated oily skin with clogged pores. But in this one, you recommend no chemical exfoliation? So should I stop using it for now until I feel like my moisture barrier is healed, then pick it back up?
Wow, a huge blessing this is! I'm 52 going through menopause with similar skin you've described. I haven't watched your entire video, but does giving up chemical exfoliation include retinols/retin A?
Oh my gosh, it's so nice to know I'm not the only way, you are open and very helpful, thank you, and also helpful is Sonia Anastasia and actually every male and female that shares their story, God bless all of you 🙏💞💞.
This video is like therapy for me right now. I am really going through it right now with a broken skin barrier from retinoids. It’s so hard and painful and every day feels like a nightmare. I hope I can heal mine too.
Have you managed to heal it?
Totally hear you. I damaged my moisture barrier the same way.
It's such a frustrating experience but you learn a lot about your skin!
Oatmeal is gold!
Did it work?
How long did it take you?
I just had a few blemishes before. So, I bought a TON of korean skincare and use it and exfoliate like crazy. Aha, bha, bp, vit C.. everything.. now my skin is filled with closed comodones and is far worse than before. I will take your advice and stop everything! Thank you so much for your advice!
Oh no! Sounds like your skin is very angry! So happy to help and hope you recover quickly!

I damagedre barrier using retinol and vitamin c too much. I stopped everything except using a mild clenser, jojoba oil and a face cream with dimethicone to lock in the moisture. My skin healed in about 3 weeks...

Congrats on clearing your skin! Focusing on hydration now and taking things one step at a time to see how your skin does in its new clear state is a wise decision!

Sis same!!! Can you tell me what products you use? Do you do your skincare routine once or twice a day?

The timing of this video couldn’t be more perfect!! I’ve been trying to heal my barrier and just couldn’t stop spot treating my acne breakouts with exfoliants during the process. Thanks for reiterating how important it is to just drop it lol
On that note, when can I start using acne treatments again?
Ceramides are amazing for the skin! Also when your skin is that damage as well the less products the better, and she said it being patient.
I love your skin barrier series ♡

Amen on PATIENCE sister!
My skin was damaged when I used ALL of The Body Shop’s Tea Tree line in a 10-step K skincare routine. My WHOLE FACE was covered in inflamed and cystic acne. I was just shattered emotionally, physically, psychologically and FINANCIALLY 😭😭😭
I stopped it immediately and when I discovered Liah Yoo’s channel and her #skincarediet philosophy, I opt for using only the BASICS (cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen).

Skin saver video 100/10
Last summer at this same time I was so desperate because I was breaking out and I didn't know what to do so I would physically exfoliate TWICE A DAY.
OMG ! SAMEEEEE I REALLY DON'T HAVE A ANSWER TO THIS BUT IM GLAD I FOUND THIS SINCE THIS IS MY CONCERN TOO 😭
I want to note that you can still use chemical exfoliation and repair a MB..

Please reply.,
Hi Kelly, what were the symptoms of your damaged barrier? did you experience persistent redness along with bumpy texture?

Hi... azelaic acid is not a bha nor aha.. it's produced by a yeast that occurs naturally in our skin
hello kelly,
regarding layering toners to fix the moisture barrier, how did u do it? did u pat dry skin until it was completely dry after cleansing and then put on the toners or did u dry the skin a little bit so that it was still damp and then apply the toners? also would an essence still be suitable in replacement of a toner in this step of putting back water into the skin because i know both toners and essence’s purpose is to hydrate the skin. also u stated that u used an oil after this step and then put on the barrier treatment which is a moisturizer, but from my understanding i’ve been told to go lightest to heaviest, which in this case, a moisturizer is water and oil, making it lighter than an oil, but u told us to use an oil first. i would appreciate a response regarding my questions thank u 😊
Invest in a good humidifier. That's the most important thing for your skin way more than anything else
This really does hit me, the mental aspect and how it makes you feel so thank you! I will keep patience and hydration as first steps!

so I need to stop using differin too?
If you want to speed up the healing of your moisture barrier you will want to consider stopping use of retinoids for the duration of healing.
I thought face oil went on last after moisturizer? But you said to use it before?
You can do either way! My reasoning for before moisturizer is because high linoleic acid oil (best for moisture barrier care) penetrates deeper into your skin, while high oleic acid oils don't dive as deep into your pores and act as a more occlusive moisture locking agent, which makes them most appropriate for layering on top of moisturizer.
Thank you for this! I’ve spent almost 3 years trying to figure out my skin.. I will definitely use this video and info to try to heal my barrier and see wonderful skin! 🤞

Hi kelly, im sure after 3 months of good skincare i finally strengthen my skin barrier. No active acne but acne marks are left. Want to use vitamin c serum for thise. Is vitamin c good or damaging to skin barrier?
What products did you use to heal your skin barrier?
Does the skin barrier always heal in the end from long term over-exfoliation? Or can the damage to your skin be permanent? And happy new year!
Skin will heal itself if you give it the care and space it needs to do so! Human body is amazing!
It should definitely help, just remember to be patience and give it time to work it's pore cleaning and tightening magic!
Kelly Driscoll thank you! Will try my BEST to be patient really xoxo ❤️

4.Etude house sunscreen
I wouldn't recommend continuing the use of the Benton BHA toner or the Missha Ceramide PHA cream. These will continue to irritate your skin and potentially delay your healing process.
Do you recommend if I substitute with soon jung Etude house toner and for the cream the ordinary moisturiser factor ?
Since I’m currently student so I do have limited budget
Those both sound like great replacements!
Thank you for your reply 😊
Hi kelly I brought the products, which order should I go in? Is there some I use only at the morning and some at night? Like how you said the cleanser is for only night? I’m new to this and just want to know the order of what I should do and thanks
Just found your channel!!! I love it! Wow ❤️ great job hun
Thank you! 💕
How about bergamot oil in make p:rem some says it can cause pytophotodermatitis a sensitivity to the sun . and its not free of Furocoumarins
Idk does washing your face with a sponge and bar soap for 5 years straight damages your moisture barrier 😆 stoopid OCD teenager I was
Hey, I was recommended the same shit by my family as a kid. SMH. At least we know now. :)
Did the breakouts eventually go away? If so, how long did it take?
This makeup look tutorial plz😍😍
Everything is the same as this video tutorial th-cam.com/video/qxILr1mfl2w/w-d-xo.html only difference is eyeshadow is peripera sugar twinkle in kitten beige!
Now that your moisture barrier is healed do you still stay away from ahas? Also, how would you recommend keeping dry flaky skin at bay without ahas
Im going through the same! A broken skin barrier but terrified of not using azelaic acid every night. What if the breakouts reemerge? 😭
So do you do anything in the morning, like use a warm wet towel to clean your skin? Just wondering for myself. Thank you!
Wow. Very informative & well articulated.
I don't do chemical exfoliation.. but I use physical exfoliants (coffee scrub)
I know physical exfoliants cause micro tears but I am scared to try chemical exfoliants now !!
Very nicely explained Kelly. Just my situation right now trying to use everything together. So glad I found this in my suggested list ❤️
what if you have oily skin? it's impossible not to wash your face in the morning , moreover if you have seborrheic dermatitis as i do
I typically just use water to get off excess oil from overnight
You can wash with warm (not too hot) water and a washcloth, it's usually all you need to remove excess sebum. Alternatively you can use micellar water, it's less harsh than cleanser. Give it a try and see what you think!
You can use colloidal oat water!
This video is perfect for me at the moment. I will try all of your recommendation. Just a question, for a person who usually use chemical exfoliation, how do u control your blocked pores in this phase? any physical exfoliation?
Does not using chemical exfoliation include your body? I'm not using any chemical exfoliants on my face but my body lotion has 10% AHA
My moisture barrier was damaged when I got acne lol but I got the same way as her my acne cleared when I used benzoyl peroxide and I thought it was a prevented thing but I guess I didn’t need it anymore all I used was benzoyl now I got red at night
how did you reintroduce chemical exfoliants once your barrier was healed
Do you recommend physical exfoliation??like scrubing face and take away all dead skin???? pls answer
Love it. The video is so helpful. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this video! Really helpful information. Not many people talk about this. U used so many products (including chemical exfoliation) and didn't understand why it wasn't working.
So, so helpful! Amazing info.
Thanks, love🍃🌸.
Super happy it was helpful! 💕
My moisturize barrier is comprised I’ve been rinsing my face with Luke warm water and using a water cream and an drugstore spf is there a moisturizer I can buy from Sephora with all the ingredients to help my barrier I can’t order on online
I would love to know a little more about intuitive skincare! Trying to listen to my skin but I’m not sure what it’s telling me
How long does it take and when do you know if your barrier is healed?
In another one of your videos, you recommended AHA/BHA for dehydrated oily skin with clogged pores. But in this one, you recommend no chemical exfoliation? So should I stop using it for now until I feel like my moisture barrier is healed, then pick it back up?
Wow, a huge blessing this is! I'm 52 going through menopause with similar skin you've described. I haven't watched your entire video, but does giving up chemical exfoliation include retinols/retin A?
Wendy B Yes.
Oh my gosh, it's so nice to know I'm not the only way, you are open and very helpful, thank you, and also helpful is Sonia Anastasia and actually every male and female that shares their story, God bless all of you 🙏💞💞.
You are amazing, saved my skin
