- Si was lucky enough to catch up with Ed Pratt, who is the first person to cycle around the world on a unicycle. His 22,000-mile trip took Ed over 3 years and we caught him now that he's back on home soil.

You may well know of Ed Pratt from the videos he has produced along the way on his adventure. Ed achieved a world first by circumnavigating the globe on a unicycle. Ed's trip covered around 22,000 miles and he averaged around 50 miles each riding day. He had a total of 80 punctures over the trip and repairing a 36-inch inner tube we'd imagine is not easy. A super interesting guy and what an adventure. This has got to be one of the more unique records we've seen!

I ran into Ed in Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway a few days after I had started my TransAm trip. I couldn’t believe he had climbed all the way up there! I am so glad you filmed this and provided a link to his channel. I didn’t know he had one.

The word "Epic" in the phrase Epic Journey, does not do justice to what Ed Pratt accomplished.
Incredible achievement is an understatement, and that's without including the immense amount of money collected for charity, and Ed seems like a humble, fun guy - congratulations to Ed and thanks, GCN, for putting this together

I have no idea how long he practiced for but it took me a couple days before I could ride even 10 feet without holding on to something. I'm totally impressed by how quick he got the hang of it. 😋

As a two-wheel traveller, I started following Ed's truly epic-beyond-imagination trip at least a year and a half ago. A gentleman, great film maker and amazing adventurer.

@@gcn we rode Leicester to Birmingham. 50 miles. The video is on my channel. I'd been following his progress since I first got on a unicycle and realising long distance is possible on them.

Actually, he's technically not the first to do it. He said so himself. Another guy did it before him in the 70's if I remember correctly. Ed's gonna do a video with him in the near future

I have never met Ed, don't know if I ever can (but I want to), but through his videos, which I have watched every single one of, it feels to you like he is both, a known friend but also a celebrity. I would really take it as an honor to meet him, I would even want to cycle the 880m I am living away from him (being a bike fan just like him, who MIGHT do a world trip on the bike one day. Definately a possibility).
Watched this vid. Led me to watch some of Ed's own you tubes. Excellent documentaries Ed. Mature beyond your years. I kind of think you ought to think a bit bigger than the GCN approach. Your more like a future David Attenborough if you want to be. Worthy of a following in the millions, rather than thousands. Great effort...... Royal Britania!!

Yes, they featured a record attempt on the channel a few months back
They covered the penny farthing hour record on the channel previously, not the unicycle. The unicycle hour record is 29.99km.
James Bearpark, a unicycle record attempt on the channel? If true, I'd have have thought that this would have failed miserably, as it's very wet, more suited to swimming.
There's a unicycle hour record, a 24 hour record, and they do track racing over standard distances. Most of us just ride for fun though.

I have questions: how does one, with such gear, get up hills? & also how does one descend safely?
He has some strong legs
zigzag. plenty lot of zigzags on uphill. while he do have disc brakes, unicycle is pretty much a fixie. i guess it'll definitely allow a safe descend from a hill.

Simple. You hold on for dear life.
In addition to riding slowly / in zigzags he also often had to push his bike up and down hills
By growing a pair and just grunting through it all. If it's too severe, he gets off and walks (which is permitted). Gears are over rated, especially the amount we have available today. Some unicyclists use a 2 speed hub, usually to get an even higher ratio rather than a lower one.
i did not think i would care for this, and thought it to be a novelty thing but upon viewing i find myself impressed. this is quite the journey ! very humbling. Bravo Ed ! someone should make a movie about you. what charity was it that you raised the money for ?

I’ve been a follower of Ed Pratt for years. A subscriber to GCN, its great to see the two combine efforts. Excellent Sunday surprise. (And...happy to see Ed complete his global quest.) Congratulation Ed and wow(!) quick study on the Unicycle. Beer was a good choice.
