I had the opportunity to give this a try last night at my favorite restaurant. It was hidden up on the top shelf, and I was 😳. Shocked. I had one before, Dinner another during and one for dessert. The steak was ok too. Almost on the lines of Laphroiag, but sticks with you longer if that makes sense. Steak $33.00 Scotch $45.00 my smile while the Mrs. drove home, priceless.
When you mentioned toilet paper, I first thought you made a joke about the current situation... and then I remembered that the video is 2 years old, and that was on point xD
You two are my kind of people. I feel that we have very similar tastes in whiskey. Thanks for keeping me from having to guess when looking for a new bottle.
My stepdad uncles and I drank this from a gift from the grandson of the founder of Brady, TX. When my uncle first took a sip his first impression was that the master distiller "Must Have" dipped a sweaty goat sack in it before bottling. Is this true and is it standard of scotch distillers to dip goat sacks into whisky to add flavor?
I know Lagavulin is known to be one of the more peated scotches out there. Personally, I have only had the 8 year and thought it was pretty good. When it comes to islay I typically stick to Ardbeg. Also my friend was telling me about Compass Box. I noticed my local liquor store has it, but is it worth it and which one?
Well first things first, you can't possibly go wrong with Ardbeg. So you're obviously a wise human being. second, Compass Box is fucking awesome. Start with Flaming Heart, Peat Monster, or Spice tree
Whiskey Vault Thanks a lot! The one that always seems to come up is Peat Monster. But damn, everytime I walk in to that store and see the Ardbeg out of the corner of my eye, that shit calls to me. Although this new Kelpie has shown up. Haven't tried it nor have I heard anything about it. Thoughts?
I really would love to attend all of your courses, however does it actually lead to a career or is it simply a bartering tool for those who are already in the field ?
I would say all of the above. We've also found several of our sommeliers that have taken the level one just to apply the knowledge and skills learned in a completely different industry. They're using it to create amazing events for high end clients and build a community.
I have come to learn that this is not typical, but this was my first scotch purchase, and I loved every drop of it. Before this, my go-to was The Woodword Reserve.
Big fan of Islay whiskies and Connemara's peated whiskey. A while back, you mentioned that Scottish peat was a limited resource, but there were other regional peat sources available (Russia, Alaska, Antartica, &c.). Can you review and suggest some smoked peat whiskies from those areas?
I'm an Aussie and Superbowl starts at 9am here as does drinking at my house and the rule is to bring a bottle of bourbon. Lately we have progressed to some amazing bourbons (e.g. Blaton's cask strength). I have already got a bottle of Bookers on standby for Superbowl and AD laws cask strength for the guys welcome pour.
Head over to the site for more info! www.whiskymarketing.org The next level on is September 25-26: whiskymarketing.org/product/level-1-september-125-26-2017/
My favourite smoky Islay whisky bar none (although I've never tried an Octomore as they come across a bit gimmicky to me). I've had the 2009, 2012 and 2015 release of the Laga 12 and have the 2016 stashed. They were all amazing. Twice the price of the 16 but much better imo. I think the lack of sherry cask influence emphasises the smoky, citrusy profile of the 12. Smoke and sherry together often leads to them cancelling each other out in my experience. Uigedail being the exception.
Welcome! As whisky ages in a barrel the proof (alcohol content) goes up or down based on weather, climate, and temperatures. Usually the spirit that goes into the barrel is at a higher proof because it changes how the spirit interacts with the wood. But when it comes time to bottle, you'll end up with a 58% ABV beverage, and most whisky is consumed between the 40% and 45% range. Which means, you empty out barrels into larger containers, blend them to the flavor profile you're looking for, and add water to bring the ABV down. When you skip the last part of that process and simply bottle instead of adding water, you end up with a "cask strength" whisky. Hopefully that gives some clarity!
wow. i appreciate the effort explaining man. so anything cask strength means drinking the whisky at its "raw-est" state from the barrel. (to put it on layman's term) gotcha man. thanks!
Hey pals ! Sir love your videos ! I know this is unrelated to the above whisky but by any chance could you try 100 pipers scotch whisky with no age statement on and please tell me if it is smoke or peat that i taste 😅. It does say smoke on it but the smoke i tasted in blenders pride reserve was way different maybe because its an indian whisky😅 they too mention th whisky has smoked notes but they both are way different from each other ! Thankyou very much sir.
Daniel, you just received a special release Lagavulin. What are some of your whisk(e)y white whales/unicorns, scotches or bourbons that you have yet to taste that are on your "hunt" list? Cheers!
There are all kinds of cool things on my list that are duty free releases of scotch or local at the distillery only. I'd love to get my hands on one more bottle of the Compass Box "Not a Luxury Whisky". So many good things out there.
Also, I really need some advice. We're doing a regional tasting, on "standard" bottle per region. Here's our list: Lowland: Auchentoshan 12 Campeltown: Springbank 10 Highland: Glenmorangie original Speyside: Glenfiddich 12 Islay: Laphroig 10 Island: Highland Park 10 I'd love for you to make any adjustments! PLEASE HELP, especially with Campeltown. We're looking for quintessential expressions that showcase the region, NOT the finish. Also looking about $50 a bottle. Thanks guys!
I picked up a bottle of 12 (and 8 to go with my 16 and 2000 Distillers Edition) last weekend... And oddly, while binge watching the first 30 videos yesterday (No, I don't have anything better to do), I figured I'd ask if you where going to review the Lagavulin 12, but I guess I don't have to now. Oh, just got in from work, and I'm bingeing again. #LagavulinLove
I've been keen to try Lagavulin as I am a peat head, but not got round to it in the two years since I started the whisky journey (as Ralfy would say!). Will definitely get the 16 to start with, but really fancy also the 8, the D.E and this CS 12 as well. Better save up as I also want Ardbeg Corryvreckan for Christmas as well!
Patron Saint of Whiskey, huh? I think I can live with that. I knew you would pick this first. :) One thing you didn't mention was that this is for the 200th anniversary of Lagavulin and the 14th issuing of 12yo. They also did an 8yo 200th anny which I think you have. I thought you would've compared the two. Whiskey Saint is disappointed. Haha As for the whiskey, water is definite must. Take some time with it and let it oxidize, then get back to me. It really is quite amazing stuff. I do love cask strength bc of the value too. When u add it in, the price doesn't seem too bad.
Whiskey Vault You are forgiven, Daniel-San. Cask strength Lagavulin can do weird things to people. I think Nick Offerman would even struggle with this and his beard is thicker than both yours put together!
Rex Indeed he did! If you guys ever do the 8yo, you'll have to be kind enough to remind him that he owes you some more 12 for comparison. Whiskey Saint's orders!
Already have access to several cameras. The newest is a panasonic g85. Tempted buy the GH5, but we just didn't need the few features that make it better (and more $$$) than the g85. Your "MBC Doing Good Community" video is pretty awesome by the way. Nicely done.
Rex thanks Rex I just enjoy your videos so much and I learn a lot about whisky from them, I just feel having three cameras would add a lot to the channel rather than the zoom back, and the modern rogue videos are a great example
Agreed. Even though I have the gear, it's more about efficiency right now. No crew, shooting budget, or time to setup multiple cameras. Daniel and I record a weeks worth of vids in less than an hour. The editor has less than a day to cut 5 vids. The additional transcoding / rendering time for 2 more cameras just won't work right now. Maybe someday after we've proven to the academy that this channel can carry it's own weight.
Got a question for you guys, I know you've talked about the different types of grains in different whisk(e)ys that are most common, so what I would like to know are two things: 1. Does it have to be a certain type of grain, for instance cereal grains, for it to be considered a whisk(e)y? 2. What is the weirdest grain you have ever encountered in a whisk(e)y?
1. no. Technically any grain can be a whisky. Japan actually has a rice whiskey. And Louisiana has one with rice in the grain mix. 2. Rice. no question.
Hey Daniel & Rex, quick question here, is there something I should consider when storing my Whisk(e)y in the shelf regarding corks? I've noticed that some of them inflate, become crooked, or even crack. I read somewhere that you should wet them for a minute or two in the bottle with it's Whisk(e)y. How true is that?
Yeah, wetting the cork can be helpful to keep it from drying out. But don't leave it in contact with the cork, or the whisky will eat the cork. I'd say, if you're not drinking it regularly, maybe once a week turn the bottle upside down for a second and back. that should be enough.
hey guys I'm a bit curious as to the price ranges for whisky in the US? in Australia (pretty sure we have parity with the Canadian dollar or close enough) the average price for a bottle of run of the mill grog starts at $40-$45 i.e Jack Daniels with something like lagavulin. being closer to $120 or Bookers $110. keep up the good work and may your livers forgive you.
Just seen the 12 on the store shelf and watched your video. Still not sure if the 12 is worth it, about $40 more then the 16. Just for a limited release? Hmmmmmmmm
Been wtching your videos for at least 4 hours now...need my whisky right now ! great videos, need to try the Argentinian first single malt La Alazana (am from Argentina of course) next november am visiting LA, so may be bring you guys a bottle !
I've came to the conclusion that the best whiskey gift is a blended whiskey. It's the safest bet, like Daniel isn't the worlds biggest fan of Speyside's, a blend removes some of the risk of getting the wrong region etc
There's a scientific way to settle this: Everyone could send me a gift bottle of scotch whisky and I'll report back with the gift I found "the best". Bonus points for gifting me the following: Lagavulin 12, Lagavulin 16, Lagavulin 8, Lagavulin Distiller's Edition, Ardbeg 10, Springbank 15, Talisker 18, any Octomore, Laphroaig 15, Laphroaig 18, Highland Park 18, Old Pulteney 17, Caol Ila Cask Strength, Bunnahabhain 18, any Glenfarclas, Oban 18, Benriach 17. Come on, guys ! It's for science !!!
right this moment I am trying " the few" prohibition style bourbon. I would be interested to see what you two think about it. my thoughts are basically summed up by " anyone see the guy that just kicked me in the mouth?"
Rex your slipping in moochitude. You didnt get any extra out of Daniel in this one. I think the Mooch necklace needs to come back to return you to your mooching ways.

😂🤣😂 Priceless!
When you mentioned toilet paper, I first thought you made a joke about the current situation... and then I remembered that the video is 2 years old, and that was on point xD
Was Charlie the first patron saint??? I’m so glad I get these moments as I binge watch through. Love catching up
Today I bought a Jameson caskmates because i remembered it from your show, and WOW its even better then you made it look. Thanks :)
I remember it being a lot better than I expected. Tempted to mooch a bottle for the house.
YES! Love that you liked it.
Keep an eye out Jameson has released a caskmates IPA edition haven't tried it yet but I'm searching for one
lowered expectations is the best seasoning.
You two are my kind of people. I feel that we have very similar tastes in whiskey. Thanks for keeping me from having to guess when looking for a new bottle.
I've been waiting for you to do a review on this. So glad you got a bottle.
Love the look on Rex's face! "Yes lets"! lol.
I thoroughly recommend 3/4 Dalmore 12 and 1/4 Lagavulin 16. You get a richness to the taste at the same time as a mint finish.
Let's say yes, because this version is so much funnier than the truth.
Re-watching because I bought a bottle of 12.
Same here
Ha same. Holy smokes!

Right now, I don't know of any. But I'll keep an ear out!
Have you tried Ardbeg Dark Cove? If so how does it stand up to the Kelpie in your opinion? Between the two which is the better value?
I haven't Need to get some! I've never tried anything from Ardbeg I didn't like.
Daniel,How do I enroll in your Whiskey Sommelier Class? Keep the videos coming. Cheers from New Hampshire.

I'd be interested to see what you think about George Dickel No.12, my coworker gave me some he claims is undrinkable but I don't mind it.
I'm not a huge fan, but I wouldn't call it undrinkable. I'll add it to our drinking list!
I laughed my ass off watching Daniel after his 12 count sip.
Taking one for the team.
My favourite smoky Islay whisky bar none (although I've never tried an Octomore as they come across a bit gimmicky to me). yo daniel, whats the process involved when you say something is "cask strength"? sorry, im new to all this... 😑

Ancient Age? I'll have to grab some.
Is Ancient Age the same as Buffalo Trace Antique Collection?
Also, I really need some advice. We're doing a regional tasting, on "standard" bottle per region. Here's our list:

Greatest video ending in the history of TH-cam. 😂
Speaking of Costco, have you tried any of the Kirkland single malts?
Not yet! Can't get them in Texas

Wait a minute... I could have had another 200th anniversary to compare this?!? Daniel was holding out on me... There will be consequences.
Rex Indeed he did! If you guys ever do the 8yo, you'll have to be kind enough to remind him that he owes you some more 12 for comparison. Whiskey Saint's orders!

And I think you guys are growing rapidly so you'll get there soon enough

Best ending ever... "Bitches". Daniel did you make the full 12 count?
I did!

Yeah, prices vary pretty wildly over here to. Depends on the store and the state. Each state has totally different liquor taxes.
Whiskey Vault hey mate just wondering if you could let me know what address would be best if I wanted to send you guys a little something to taste?
It would be a pleasure, absolutely.
whiskymarketing.org/about/contact-us/
Whiskey Vault well I will send a little taste of Australia to you, might take a bit to get there haha
(don't let the mooch hog it all).
Just seen the 12 on the store shelf and watched your video. Still not sure if the 12 is worth it, about $40 more then the 16. Just for a limited release? Hmmmmmmmm
try out Cardhu 12 please!
It's on the list!
Are you guys going to start updating the whiskey marketing Instagram? I noticed the last post was not to recent.
I like your delicious beets.
Not aggressively, but I may start linking to the daily videos from there.
The Lagavulin 16 year old is 130 bucks here in New Zealand
Love the new ending, ya turd hackers!
Been wtching your videos for at least 4 hours now...need my whisky right now ! great videos, need to try the Argentinian first single malt La Alazana (am from Argentina of course) next november am visiting LA, so may be bring you guys a bottle !
That would be awesome! We would love to try it!
My neighbor is from Argentina. Because of her, we know eat empanadas every Christmas.
hahaha that's great ! jam and cheese empanadas, best ! closer to the date ill send you an inbox or something and we will taste them together !
I've came to the conclusion that the best whiskey gift is a blended whiskey. It's the safest bet, like Daniel isn't the worlds biggest fan of Speyside's, a blend removes some of the risk of getting the wrong region etc
Yeah, it's a safe bet for sure.

1:18 says not that hartless.... Does that exact thing 47 times in upcoming videos!
if you are friends with me any bottle will get the same reaction from me I love whiskey and I like trying lots of things
Re: the Ethiopian dollar, would he/she be an Ethiopian Somalian?
Ha! I'm assuming you mean Ethiopian Sommelier. Yes, definitely. But it would be even cooler to have a Somali Sommelier.
right this moment I am trying " the few" prohibition style bourbon. I would be interested to see what you two think about it. my thoughts are basically summed up by " anyone see the guy that just kicked me in the mouth?"
The only one we have in the vault is the forester prohibition style. I'll try it!
also got free Booker's by befriending the bar tender
The Mooch is strong in this one.
Rex your slipping in moochitude. You didnt get any extra out of Daniel in this one. I think the Mooch necklace needs to come back to return you to your mooching ways.
Expect a triumphant return on Monday.
I love the reading of the comments, as it is always a good laugh or a rather informative question, but WHY OH WHY do you have to start reading it JUST as soon as one of you taste the whiskey!?! I know you're not an "in-depth" review show, but I feel it would flow a lot better if your opinion of the dram wasn't garbled in with the comment commentary.
I'm telling I will fly from Canada to Texas to go to your whisky class all day long. The only problem is that the legal age in Quebec is 18 y.o. and I'm 20 which is not enough in the US... help me daddy(s).
How long you Gentlemen finish the Bottles behind you? Lol
Will you honor the European Euro? Wait, err that wouldn't work out as nice
Ahem.... uhhhh. yes!
I'll be right back, just applying for my Ethiopian passport.
Hine
It's funny how Crown Royal, a basic Canadian whisky, is associated with American rednecks and NASCAR.
