I think my genuine set with dust covers cost around $580 from Glen EP. 120,000km and not a bit of movement on them yet including a lap of Aus which was hard on the gear. Go genuine LBJ folks!
i just ordered new ball joints for my 97 Prado! along with 3 oil filters 2 timing belts and a new water pump. gotta keep that 1KZ-TE happy! great video bro!
If I were you, I'd replace that eBay ball joint now. It could cost you $$$$ from potential body damage if they let go at the wrong time. But it could also cost you more than just money. So for greater peace of mind and safety, I'd replace it now.
Installed triple 5 lower & upper ball joints in my 90 - no worries so far, they seem to be top of the market for cheap replacements. Never gonna beat genuine Toyota but at least they are somewhat reputable. Can't blame you tho mate I'd naturally go for the cheapest I could get, thankfully seen enough of these videos to talk myself out of it haha
Oh and ALWAYS check the LBJs on 90 series even if you have original parts. When ours failed it was original Toyota LBJ - this is a design flaw with the 90 so CHECK CHECK CHECK.
what condition are your lower control arm bushes? I have a suspicion that most of them fail due to jerking from the LCAs cant recommend genuine enough!
It's a worry, constantly on my mind as well. I do check my ebay cheapies sort of regularly, seem fine so far, they have been on for 3-4 years. I did buy a set from Amayama but haven't put them on yet, just waiting for ... never mind, lol. What were those yellow balljoint catcher thingys called, it could be worthwhile putting them on?
Believe me I feel your pain. I used a chain to keep the balljoint in place just to move it to a safe space to work. Send me your email I can send you some pictures.
I agree with not buying ebay steering parts. last week I snapped a ebay tie rod end in my Prado doing 80kph in the middle of a corner. The balls are out of the CV.
Replace LBJ's with OEM only . . . . That's the golden rule with 90 series as far as I'm concerned. I've heard the horror stories and changed mine even though it wasn't necessary just for peace of mind. Why are you gonna wait and check and worry and check and so on . . . .just wack 2 genuine LBJ's in and then check every now and then and you won't be worrying so much. It's a no brainer really mate 👍 Glen p from rhythm off-road used to do them really cheap or I've seen em cheap off partsouq
Always worth it to go with quality parts. Good PSA video. Cheap parts are legit dangerous. Glad you were going slow!

Switch the right one asap. You must have learnt by this point. A set of Toyota LBJs 1 year ago would have saved you like $2k by now at least.
Buy quality not crap.jackup and grease after rain.

Ball joints are actually more likely to collapse at lower speeds as more work is being put on your steering/suspension

I´ve heard in my country to try a brand called Moog for the LBJ's. They last 50k+ km
Change the other one already bro. It’s not gonna give you any hints and just collapse. This is one of the first maintenance I did for both my 90s
Have you got a link to that ball joint catcher at 09:28, that seems like a good idea for the 90.
I dont have a link sorry
would love to know too, can't find them anywhere online!

Mate, it sucks!
Always use factory LBJ, check them frequently, any play=replace
Just replace the other one NOW
Common problem with the 90s . Toyota should recall them and rectify the problem

Hey been there too... About same cost!

actually, the ball bearing that you are holding has nothing to do with your lower ball joints
those are bearings for the axle
Internal bearings from the CV joints I would have thought.
Ohh yeah, my bad
@@BuiltCruisers all good my mate. be safe
