This festival is celebrated throughout the entire country, literally every street in every city, town or village. When I was a little kid every street had its own tent and stage so if you drove around the city you would be greeted by splashes around literally every corner. It's become commercialized now and not as fun as it was before. It's not just splashing water but free offerings of delicious local food as well as religious activities like going to the monastery and listening to dharma sermons. Many attain ordination into the monastic order for a short period of time. Sadly for me, it had been 25 years since I enjoyed my last festival. Oh, and please remember to buy buckets and hand-held pumps next time. They're the most effective traditional weapons.
@@raspberryquartz6186 I moved to a remote part north of the city when I was 10. It was sparsely inhabited back then so no fun for me anymore. As I grew older, I delved more and more into religious reading, so I guess I no longer had the spark for fun. I spend Thingyan holidays reading now.

for ladies if you want to enjoy the water festival and protect yourself, you should bring bath towels (can be colorful or stylish one. don''t bring boring one color towel). When you get splashed by fireman's water pipe, you need to cover your head with the bath towel.
Ummmm I'll tell the truth. That stage is REALLY small. There are stages that are 2 to 3 times bigger and there are singers. Some people go around and give warm food. Driving around the whole day won't make you sick. You don't catch a cold and that's from experience. Many people played in water for hours 4 days straight and they don't get sick, strange right? And at the last day people would have extra fun. This is just the first day so there isn't much. The countdown at mid night is fun too. There are fireworks and its sooo pretty. BUT CUZ OF CORONA MY VACATION TO BAGAN AND ENJOYING THINGYAN FESTIVAl WERE CANCELEd!! ughhh so annoying. Last yr we went to Ngwe Saung beach so we didn't really enjoy the water. But in 2018 we did but not 2020 ahhhh
