Household bleach is already diluted to 6% or less. It looks like she diluted with tap water by another factor of 20. A few hours in that weak solution will kill the odor without risking the colors. Obviously she wouldn’t use this method if it was destroying the beautiful colors
The glue solution seals the urchins. It gives a nice even shine, pretenses the colors and keeps them from becoming brittle and crumbling. Same process used for preserving sand dollars
I would use rubber gloves. Hate the smell of bleach. I've never used bleach on urchins. Don't want to take a chance on ruining the colors. Just leave them outside for awhile in the shade.
We never take shells that still have a mollusk alive inside. We found these urchins dead in the high rack line after a storm. We usually let them sit outside for awhile and the ants an other wild life eat at them for awhile before we get around to cleaning them up. They make the job a little easier :)

The / shells are still alive right ? Won't they regrow of thrown back into salt water?
