    Your videos are an excellent resource for those of us who strive to understand not only the what but also the why. I had actually purchased an LSI 9201-8i HBA from your eBay store for my first TrueNAS build, based on recommendations in the TrueNAS forum, before discovering your TH-cam channel. Your videos have only reinforced my HBA purchase decision. Thanks for the wealth of technical information in your videos and for presenting it in such a clear and concise manner.

    Just got my 2 sas controllers from your eBay store the other day. I can only say, I'm glad I found you. They were like new and worked like a charm. And also thank you for the offer to help with any issues even before I had the controllers in my hands, it meant a lot for me. This is solid deep tech, I was able to follow it well with the slide deck. Slightly OT- to continue with this presentation I would love to see how you configure an array using an HBA on the software side in unraid or freenas, not sure how the HBA's in IT mode shows up on them and how they handle the 48 bit or 64 bit addresses. I am teaching myself all I can to maybe screw together something like the 45 drives storage workstation, I know they are using a VM instance on unraid, but not sure how they are doing it. (Yes im a noob, I only know enough to know what I don't know!!)

    I appreciate the careful slide presentation of fact data.
    The other thing I'd like to see is an inventory of commonly encountered recycled server hardware discussing the limits of each, and their capacity to be upgraded with new firmware and such.
    The theoretical knowledge is very helpful, and if course where the "rubber meets the road" is knowing what we should be buying on eBay or from our local enterprise gear surplus house.
    It's helpful that you offer IT-flashed HBAs for the times when we find good deals on hardware that has unsuitable HBA hardware, but it always helps to know what to look for.
    Thanks for all the great videos!!!!

    I appreciate the time it takes to make these. I enjoy the education of servers especially the little things that just don't always make sense. Not much I'd change to be honest, maybe show how you update the servers in a video? I've got one stuck on 2TB limit and the rest not so it seems I'd need a solution if I wanted to have it be able to handle more per drive.

      @@ArtofServer yeah I’ll check them out. I watch a few of yours. Another request is when building out a few cabinets of these and connecting them with the leaf-spine architecture what kind of budget friendly routers and switches do you recommend?
      I’ve seen things like running pfsense and unifi but didn’t know if these had limitations or that proxmox would be better.
      I’m more a computational scientist who loves the compute hardware and totally nerd out on infiniband, GPUs, DPUs, TPUs, etc. but those are on someone else’s budget lol and I can’t possibly spend that kind of money.
      I do have more east west traffic with some north south maybe a 80/20 split. That is why I’m leaning towards the leaf-spine arch.

    17:00 Feedback: For this video and its subject matter, your slide deck format was effective and appropriate for educating, informing . . . and entertaining.
    While your spidey-sense is good in that slides are not great in most situations, here, your voicing and intonations are very good. So you come across as crisp and understandable . . . and even engaging, particularly should viewers elect to watch this content at 1x, 2x, 1.5x or 0.75x alternate video speeds of their choosing.

    Concur with the other commenters... I suppose you could have created a graphic to show the different sized addresses, but I don't know that it would have been worth the effort; this is sort-of abstract stuff. Not sure I would change anything... might be worth commenting WHEN the various changes took place, that is "The SAS-1 to SAS-2 transition happened in the 2xxx - 2xxy timeframe, so if you're looking at hardware from before that, it'll probably only be SAS-1" or something like that. Overall I thought the presentation was effective. Thank you!

      @Shoikan thank you! i'm glad you found this video useful. I'm happy to take requests, just know I might not get to it soon as i have a huge backlog of other video requests/ideas/concepts. Is there something specific you'd like me to discuss about SAS expanders?
      I already have a few videos on the IBM SAS2 expanders here:

    • @Shoikan
      @Shoikan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArtofServer Excellent! I didn't find your expander videos despite looking. I guess I need better glasses ;) I was wondering, since the SAS expander card does not actually use any PCIe lanes (according to my understanding, probably only for the flashing of firmware), would the following work: I have a motherboard on which the m2 NVME slot shares the PCIe lanes with the second PCIe 16x slot. If the m2 is populated, the 2nd PCIe 16x slot does not function (but gets power). Would an expander work in that slot, given that it does get power? Or does it actually need those PCIe lanes?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shoikan That's a good question. I don't know how the system detects which device to give the PCIe lanes to, the M.2 or the PCIe slot? Does it try to detect a current draw and see which slot is drawing power or not? If the detection mechanism depends on detecting power draw, this scheme might not work. But if is by other means, perhaps it can work. So, I don't have a definite answer for you, but it sure does sound like a cool way to make use of a PCIe slot that otherwise is wasted with a M.2 installed. I guess you'll have to experiment and find out! Please do let us know though.. I would be curious.
      To be specific, you are correct that the IBM SAS2 expander only uses the PCIe slot for power, it does not use any of the PCIe lanes. The firmware flashing is done over the SAS connection, not the PCIe lanes. So all you need is power to run the SAS expander.

    • @Shoikan
      @Shoikan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArtofServer I am 99% sure that the m2 slot gets precedence: I found out the hardware that they shared the lanes by inserting an M1015 in the second slot as well as an m2 drive, and wondering why the drives behind the M1015 didn't show up. I'll try to get a hold on an expander then, this does sound very hopeful indeed. I will keep you posted!

    • @Shoikan
      @Shoikan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ArtofServer I've got the expander and.... it works like a charm! So for clarity: the motherboard is an Asrock X370 Pro4 with a lowly Ryzen 3 2200G, plus 32GB memory. I've got an NVMe drive in the m2 slot, an LSI 9201-16i in PCIe2 and the IBM SAS2 expander in PCIe4, and an Intel NIC in PCIe6. Having the NVMe drive in the m2 slot 'disconnects' the PCIe lanes from PCIe4, but it will still receive power. And voila.. Drives visible and working!

    Here I am going through and I came through the end slide and I have to admit you have to slam on the brakes here.
    "I am not here to entertain you"
    That is a bit incorrect, what is considered entertainment is different from person to person, and I keep going through your back catalogue because you cover a lot of things.
    However, your "mythbusting" on ZFS was great and you should share a bit more related to such findings.
    An example of "entertainment / education"
    1: Test the SAS controller limits vs expanders, keep RAID 0'ing SSDs in ZFS and see how many you could get before you smacked into a link limit, then add another 4 lanes and see if it clears up.
    2: Hardware RAID with cache vs ZFS, which one is faster at writing asynched loads, this is something you can do in the lab and provide answers as the current Google results is polluted and doesn't contain any usable information.
    That is my 2 entertainment suggestions that is also useful information to know.

    You didn't cover SAS/SATA and for that matter FC/SATA interposer boards. These are all invariably only capable of of doing READ(10)/WRITE(10), which I suspect is down to the crappy 32bit CPU's they have in them. Random further note the LSI 1068 cards in IT mode report a 2TB drive size even if you have a much larger SAS drives installed, but as far as Linux is concerned they just work.

      @@ArtofServerOh the drives are file it's just at least on the firmware I was running on they where reported as only being 2TB in size as they flew past at boot time (rack full of J4400's with dual ported drives is pushing 500 "drives" visible to the OS). Linux reported their sizes correctly because in IT mode would appear to gather the information directly from the drive and ignores the card. Back in the day I did a week long test with f3write/f3read to convince myself that there was going to be no issues with data corruption.

    Sorry im new to this i have bought Dell Poweredge R720 with H710 mini controller and before i realized that new 12tb sas dont work on it i already buy 8 of them, so my question is there any chance to unblock this hard drives and make it work ?

      I assume your H710 mini is with the stock Dell firmware? In that case, I'm not sure... might be a firmware problem. The hardware is fully capable of > 2TB HDDs, as I've demonstrated in many of my videos when using the LSI IT mode firmware. If your plan is to keep the Dell RAID firmware, I would start by making sure it is fully up to date and see if that helps your problem.

    My god im hoping someone can answer this in a relatively short time frame. I have a PERC H700 card. Would updating this do anything to break the limit or am i screwed?

      The PERC H700 is a LSI SAS2108 based SAS-2 6Gbps RAID controller. With the latest firmware update, it should support larger than 2TB. Typically, SAS-2 and newer hardware will do fine as long as you're not running really old firmware.

      @@ArtofServer Brand new to the server space. Im setting things up in the firmware and when im trying to make a new virtual disk with a 500 gigabyte drive for my boot and a 4tb HDD, my virtual disc size limits itself to 930 gigabytes and im not sure how to solve that and make sure im getting the full 4 TB out of it.
