- The avalanche that buried my husband and three friends with it was the closest to death any of them had been. Here’s the story of what happened back country skiing on our latest trip to the North Cascades. The beginning of this video is footage from our ski trip, the avalanche shown was a simulation cut from that footage. I wasn’t skiing the day the cornice broke free taking my ski partners 1,000’ down the mountain, but to get an idea I’ve put together footage of before and after the event. The key with avalanche safety is to NEVER put yourself in an area that could slide in the first place, never ski or snowboard under wind loaded cornices, never go into the mountains, skiing, snowboarding or mountaineering without safety equipment and always know the snow conditions and check them at every elevation. Attend avalanche training courses in your area, in the Pacific Northwest the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) is a wealth of information about reported slides and snow conditions for Oregon and Washington state, find the organization in your area and check conditions daily; even then, slides happen. Life is dangerous both on and off of the couch, but the beauty and majesty of being in the mountains is as much a part of my spirit as breathing is. We have all been humbled but his experience, thank God each of those boys walked away from this event. Here’s the story.

This is quite a documented story, and it got to me. Tears streaming. I found myself only imagining what went through your mind waiting at the parking lot. Your look back analysis and evaluation of the event is something I respect and value. As a seasoned adventurer and skier, your precautionary suggestions for observing all conditions throughout the year is so tantamount. I am hugging you, and grateful that everyone is healing after a month, thank G-d, and your humility for the love of your husband and friends, makes me cry out in gratefulness.
This is by far the most powerful, most emotional, most intense video you have ever made. I am so happy that all four men were able to make it out a live and are now doing well. This video had me with every word you spoke, seeing the pain in your eyes, hearing the emotion in your voice allowed us, as your viewers to be there with you. Incredible life story, lessons to be learned. Thank you.
I have NEVER been so glued to a video! Thank God they are all ok. I know this was a hard thing for you to do but, thank you. You may save a few lives with this one.
My younger son is a snowboarder. None of the rest of us do alpine sports, so we tend to go to ski resorts to sight see while he goes snowboarding. The last 2 years we've gone to Keystone, Colorado. My wife and I would see skiers where there weren't any lifts or any kind of help and we wondered about avalanches and accidents and what they would do. We saw people skiing by themselves on very steep slopes. It looks so dangerous, I can't imagine how scary that must have been for your husband and his friends - and for you not knowing where they were.
You're such a sweet and kind person and you've been through so much, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband and his friends being caught in an avalanche, but I'm happy that they're still with you. God bless you and your family.

GREAT Video!! Upcountry here in the Sierra around Kirkwood/Lake Tahoe we have had warming weather with new snow expected this week and avalanche warnings are all over the news, Facebook pages. Those who don't ski, backpack in winter have NO idea of the dangers, yet as you noted its pure joy to be so far from the maddening crowd in such beauty.

I was literally shaking as you were talking. How scary?!?!! When we lived in Montana our town lost a very good man to an Avalanche. So glad Glenn and the gang walked away from this scary experience.
Whoa, Corrine!! You had me soooo freaked out for a while there. Of course, I immediately went to the worst, but am so glad I was wrong and, while bruised and beat up, everyone is or will be OK. Life is so fragile and can be drastically altered or ended in the blink of an eye. Given the times that we are in right now, every one needs to be totally prepared, both emotionally and spiritually, for anything and everything at all times from this instant on. Life balances on a knifes edge anyway, but now even more so and like it never has before. Thank God for every instant you have with loved ones and take nothing for granted.

Just found your channel via a permaculture search and watched your fruit pruning video--wish I would have watched it a month ago for my fruit trees sake. Really enjoyed and wanted to watch more of your videos--this title struck me as it hits close to home. I grew up in Omak and lost a friend in an avalanche while we were in high school. I was so relieved things turned out ok--and that's things can end up okay out there sometimes. I'm not personally a winter athlete by nature, and the fear of the power of snow runs deep. HARROWING TALE!!!! Such a frightening experience...you tell it so calmly FP...is it worth risking life & limb by taking those chances I wonder? They were very lucky!! My son has been in slides too....and i am so grateful that he has survived them. He is hopefully smarter and more careful from the experience. He lives in AK, and has done a lot of back country himself.
A Doc I work with got pretty hurt in an avalanche this year as well.... hope your hubby is doing okay

my wife been scaed to no not a avalanche but i'm a log truck driver up here in maine on the golden rd do not no if u have hed of it a lot of good drivers have been killed up ther and I rolled my truck and I wz 4hrs from home I get home at the seem time all the time so she no ther wz some thing bed......and I hop u r all ok thank u for sheing the story and I hop u r ok to and I tell my wife thet I love her when I go to work evre moring and nit be for I go to bad
