From the very bottom of my heart I want to thank you. Being from Puerto Rico, and having lived thru so many hurricanes, power outages, shortages and overall”shoppers hoarding and panic”; You are the one person that has given me confidence, tools and a wise road to follow.I am learning so much from both of you. I’ve gained confidence in canning and consuming without fear the processed meals. God bless you and I hope more can follow your guidance, and well researched advices.

Living in Florida, I am used to being prepared for hurricanes. They strongly recommend a week's supply of food, water, and disposable items, especially during hurricane season, from June 1st through November 30th. I find it easier to maintain supplies year-round and rotate through them.

I’m in Fl. Also. We have a well we use the water for everything except drinking. So we purchase water for drinking. We also are prepared for hurricanes or power outages. Most of my preps are purchased at the grocery store, I don’t can, however I do freeze a few meals.

That's the truth. We're inland from Cocoa Beach and have gotten hit by some big ones. I was a prepared person before becoming a prepper, so the only thing we lacked during power outages was A/C. Now we have solar generators to run fans and electronics and I plan to buy a small fridge this year. Stay safe. 🌊🌴🌞🐟

Hello to my Florida brothers and sisters! Being born and raised in Miami, and living most of my adult life in Homestead (yes, we “survived” Andrew), and now living up by the big lake in south central Florida, we are extremely well-versed in prepping for emergencies. I have now moved into canning and dehydrating for emergencies. For those who think it’s too much work, takes too much room, is too expensive, etc., please know that in the event of an emergencies, when you have no power for 3 months, the roads become impassable, or you just simply can’t get out of the house, building your supplies over a long period, a little at a time, is much better than trying to use rags for toilet paper, or you didn’t think to get a manual can opener.
Pam is right on the money when speaking about building your emergency supplies overtime. Thanks to her, I’m sure there are lots of people who’ll fare much better if the SHTF (pardon the language)!

AND I don't listen to those who say you can't wear this over whatever age, lol 😂. I dress conservatively, but it's the same style as in my 20s and 30s.

I came out of a very serious surgery, August of 2021...during the healing process, for the very first time, the thought of food preservation and home security, entered my mind. I pretty much started with nothing in regards to food preservation, so I started gathering information and acquiring items. Its been in the forefront of my mind these last couple years, and become my lifestyle. I can say, thanks to your channel and others, I've made huge strides and attained goals. I'm confident in my skills and the knowledge I've acquired and have everything I need to sustain longterm in the event of a emergency, grid down situation, catastrophe or employment crises. So thank you, all I can say is a person just needs to start and keep at it. They might be surprised how fast they can get there.

God love you and Jim! You ALWAYS try to respond and to include everyone. I must tell you, I have totally learned to can by watching your videos. Some I've watched 5 times to make sure I was doing it correct. I am 66 and never canned until December of 22. I was hesitant to purchase a canner for fear I would not use it. I feel I have more than gotten my moneys worth from my canner! But I do now make bread, can, dehydrate and store shopping prepare. A freeze dryer is just more than I am willing to buy. But hats off to you for opening a new world to people. There are lots of choices. And I must compliment you attitude, as you are an inspiration to many others. I too add to my kitchen, little by little. I have enough to now make all the things but freeze drying items. It's okay, I still learn and watch them. I can't say enough good things about your channel.

This is awesome. There are many “stages” of food prepping. I grew up food prepping and have continued to practice. We grew all our vegetables, beef, chicken, and pork. My mom canned all our vegetables and some meats, we smoked meat, and rented a freezer drawer where they processed our beef. When I left home I became the grocery prepper. I have always shopped sales to stock up as I could afford. Eventually, I started canning and dehydrating. Now, I am a freeze drying junkie, lol 😂. It’s all about what we’re comfortable with at that “stage” of our lives. You and Jim are awesome. A big ol’ thank you for all you share, all the time you spend with us, and all the work you put in to it!

I watch other channels who focus on grocery stockpiling and I am sure I will learn even more important info from you and Jim. (I am 71 and I feel like you have awakened a thirst for learning new things that I had almost lost! Thank you!)

I love this idea! I live in a small apartment so prepping is a challenge space wise. I do dehydrate and can as I am able but money is a challenge so prepping with canned goods is a must for me. I do disagree with you about not having or rather purchasing things to make bread. If we go off grid you can still make bread in a skillet. It might not be the beautiful loaves that come out of the oven but they are do-able in a skillet, as are biscuits, making cookies, etc. Yes it's a challenge and I have been experimenting but would love to see you incorporate things like this too. Love this new segment because so many people fall into the same category as I do. Excited to follow this new challenge!!!

When we got married in 1976, we were on a very strict budget and as our family grew it became more necessary just to make ends meet. We got paid every two weeks, so I made up a two week menu and shopped according to the needs to make these meals. I often shopped at Aldi, but I definitely followed the sales. By doing this it made it possible for us to meet our bills and all of the needs of our children. Meal planning was essential to our success.

I live in England and am very excited to see how you do this, I have a pantry of tinned and dried goods so I am excited to see what you pull together and how you divide it. For context we don't have canners, mason jars and lids, they are massively expensive here (many hundreds of pounds to get set up) as they all have to be imported and we do not have the skills passed down to use them confidently so this will really meet a need here. Also very few people would have a pan big enough to water can in and they would have the same problem with the ball / mason jars, we use small pans so again that wold be a n expense most people can ill afford at the moment. Almost no-one has a basement so supplies are kept in sheds and garages whre temperature fluctuates wildly. I have has to wrap all my tins and crates in clingfilm as they were starting to show rust spots after a year. The plastic buckets may well need a moisture absorber.....mine do

It took me decades to get the equipment that I have. And I frequently go back to basic methods of doing things just because it's comforting nostalgically. I have gotten many items at estate sales, and rummage sales. I started by prepping at grocery stores when I had babies. I was off on unpaid maternity leave and we were earning minimum wage. I prepared for 2 months of food, diapers, formula, etc to be sure we were set if we needed it.

Oh Pam, thank you, I have felt so overwhelmed trying to catch up to you. I grew up in a military family, we moved every year, there was no growing a garden. As an adult, my husband and I have always lived in big cities because of his job, I didn't know about gardening, you went to the store and bought what you needed. Now, I am trying to cram a life time of learning into a very short time. This is where Jim and you come in, I am not even close to being as prepared as you, but because of you I am moving in the right directions. This new way of being prepared that you are starting this week, will certainly help those of us that aren't anywhere nearly as prepared as you. How do we, your followers thank Jim and you for everything you do for us! Again, a thank you doesn't seem to be adequate enough for the two of you, but that is all I have. Thank you, suzie

Love this! I can and dehydrate. I have an entire closet that I turned into a pantry that is all from the grocery store. My #1 priority in shopping for prep/camping is that it must either be in cans or ONLY need water to prepare. I rotate dates and keep the camper van stocked for last minute camping trips, unforeseen overnight stays at work (weather), or if I need to get out quickly. Moisture absorbers canisters that I purchase at the dollar tree work wonderfully in capturing excess moisture in the container from ambient temperatures in the van. Highly recommend.

I'm fully with you when it comes to saving and plotting to get equipment. I bought my first water bath canner at a garage sale. I bought a set of all the canning utensils at Goodwill. It took me two years to get my pressure canner. I bought jars whenever they were on sale at various stores. You have to open your mind to achieve your goals. All of your equipment is fascinating but I deal realistically with my budget. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. People need to learn to move on instead of tearing down.

Pam, this will be fun. I have a few supplies for preserving food. I do have a water bath canner in which I can tomatoes and pepper relish. I have done that for years. For me the most expensive thing is the jars. They have gotten so very expensive in the last few years. But...I saw that and started purchasing them and putting them away. My husband had been talking about a dehydrator for years and finally got one a couple of years ago. The first things we dehydrated, well some weren't fully dehydrated, so we've had to toss them out. He dehydrated everything he could find. My basil worked beautifully. This year he has been much more thoroughly dehydrating whatever he has put in. We've let it sit for a couple of days to check for moisture before sealing the jars. This has worked so well. I found a vacuum sealer recommended by Sutton's Daze on Amazon. That thing is great! My point is that we have invested very little money in our tools. I found some things on sale, others I saved up to purchase. My first water bath canner was passed on to me by my dad. I did have to replace it several years ago. I have a pressure canner that I got on sale, but I haven't used it yet this year. You have inspired me to can things that I never thought about canning in the past. I feel much more confident about canning. I do much of my prepping through the grocery store.
Another important point that I have learned from you is that I can can and dehydrate year-round. I did not know that. I thought it was solely a summer thing. I had also never thought about purchasing frozen food and either dehydrating or canning it. I have learned so much from you! You are a treasure, and I look so forward to your videos. I know that I am going to learn something valuable that I can use to help me prepare and care for my family with each and every video.
I also wanted to let you know that I am going to try my hand at baking bread. That is because of you. I have been making quick breads most of my life, but I've always been terrified of yeast. I am so determined to learn that I found a grinder attachment for my KitchenAid stand mixer. I ordered it on Prime day...and a bag of wheat berries. I am excited to try it out and make my first loaves. I ordered your bread book, too! Thank you so much for all that you do to teach your viewers how to do things that seem so difficult. I love the way you explain and teach as you go. You take the scariness away from trying new things because of that. :)

I love your response to the person from the UK. Very diplomatic and well thought out. There are other methods of food preservation that don’t require a Freeze Dryer…which is relatively new for personal use. It’s all about saving for what’s important. I started with one dehydrator that was a lightning deal on Amazon. Later, the manufacturer offered a major discount so I was able to get a second one. When discussing with family about food preservation, it turned out we all wanted a Freeze Dryer so we all chipped in for one. Now I am learning how to can. Baby steps!

Good morning you two. I think you are right on about so many cannot or are not interested in prepping that we do. What I am finding at 81 yo that I don't have the stamina or the mental fortitude to do a lot of canning anymore, that also carried into the gardening. I made strawberry jam yesterday and it was all I could do to put that jam "up". I told my husband, enjoy this because I will not be doing this again, too much brain power usage, so to speak :). I am having to think about what I can purchase at the store, which breaks my heart but we do what we have to do. I will send these videos to all of them, I'm sure when you talk about it, it will make more sense to them. Your channel has been one of the BEST teachers I've ever had. Thank you. You're a blessing to thousands you'll never know.

I live in the UK and have taken a load of your advice and melded it into a system that is affordable and fits a small kitchen. For me, it's the dehumidifier and I've already made a few powders of mainly veg. I poached in foil some salmon with some dried limes from my first batch. Incredible. I do this for fun. And love it. Cheers for all the advice.

My sister and I have been preparing for years!
So much, that our two car garage has become a pantry.
We share, rotate and through the years our children have done their shopping from us in times of struggles.
When we shop, we also buy 5 items for storage.
Sometimes, but not always done in meals. Most, it's a sale item.
    Great teaching others you two.

Thank you for deciding to do this series on prepping at the grocery store. That is what my husband and I do and have been doing for some time. When we were raising our family of 3 children we had lots of room for gardens and so I canned everything I could get my hands on from our garden and local farms. It was just what we did and I was raised that way and so was my husband as both our moms did a lot of canning. Now we are the same age as you and Jim so we do our prepping from the store. It is always good to see new ideas on putting meals together so looking forward to Wednesday and Friday to see what you have come up with. I did buy some cucumbers from one of the local farms in the area so that I could make my sweek pickle chunks that thankfully don't require much work to do them as I am limited to what I can do. Thank you once again for all that you do for all of us. I look forward to more to come.

Pam and Jim, Thank you for this new series. I am single and I fall in line with your sister, Melissa. I started stocking my pantry earlier this year with all store bought things. I shopped the sales to save money and I now have a fully stocked pantry that I eat out of, rotate and replace when needed. I am proud of my accomplishment as this is all a new way of life for me. My family thinks I am crazy but that is okay. I would rather be prepared than to be scared should something happen or should I fall on hard times. I am always learning something new from you. I am seriously thinking of getting a butane stove but my question is can you store the little canisters in your house and how long would a canister last? Thank you for educating and sharing your wealth of knowledge with all of us. 😊

In March of 2020 we moved into a home that we had been building for over a year. It's on some property, not acres and acres, but a bit. Two days after our move, the country was shut down. We did not have access to the internet or TV, etc for 9 months. No one lived around us and it was a trek to the store. That's when I discovered dehydrating (I needed something of interest to keep me busy aside from working around the home). I bought a $60 dehydrator & learned how to dehydrate food. I was so inspired and thought this was just the greatest thing. I've never been a person who loved being in the kitchen. We ate out many times a week prior to moving. I actually didn't enjoy the kitchen until the shutdown. Three years later, I love it!!! I have taught myself (with the help of great TH-camrs, like yourself) many cooking methods. I dehydrate, freeze dry, sous vide, instant pot and am learning how to can. I have acquired equipment, bit by bit and have learned what I can about each one. It does help that I am retired and have time that others might not have. My point is that you don't need to buy all this equipment at one time. Just find something that interests you and go for it. I live in Texas, it is hot, & I know people who dry their herbs on the dashboard of their car! You don't always have to have expensive equipment.

Pam and Jim, thank you for this new series. I started my preps at the grocery store, then gradually added pressure canner, bread machine, dehydrator. Don’t think I will be purchasing freeze dryer, just not in our budget. I have assortment of everything food wise, covering emergency needs. I’m always looking for different meals which expand our preps. I have already made all your dried meals in jars love them all, rotating as needed. Also we are eating meals from the Protein Bowls book. Delicious!

This sounds like a great series. I am one who is slowly filling my pantry with medium and long term food. I have a pressure canner, water bath canner, and an old dehydrator. My access and ability to get products in bulk is limited. So my pantry is probably a 70/30 split of store bought foods and home preserved foods. But it’s a start and it’s what we can manage. I’m looking forward to hearing your tips and ideas!

I didn't have anything to can with. We started by buying canned meat, chili, ham, Vienna sausage, we also bought extra cans of veggies and fruit. When we had enough money to buy a canner bought our jars as we could afford. We bought produce from the store and began canning. After several years, I now have all I need to can food and have been building raised beds for some fresh homegrown veggies. I really appreciate the things I have saved to buy.

The easiest thing in the world for short term prepping is backpacking meals. I don’t know why these are never discussed on channels such as yours. It’s so simple, buy the meals at stores like REI or online. They come in Mylar bags for long term storage. And the cost is no more than a trip to the grocery store these days. Backpacking meals are designed to be nutrient dense and high protein. These are what I have in my emergency boxes.

I think your channel is fantastic! Everyone should remember that ANY preparation is better than no preparation. As a 20 year military spouse, I missed out on canning because most moving companies refused to moce bottled food . My preps were always based on the areas emergency possibilities. Just start small and keep track of what you have. The rest will follow😄

Even though I have been prepping and preserving for many years, I think this is a very good idea, because during the first few hours of an emergency situation, shock and stress can limit the ability to think, respond, and plan. I don't any longer need to have food supply for 4 people, but you'll be amazed how fast you acquire "friends with needs" in an emergency. I also think storing by the day is a great way to go, because then I could hand off the box to a willing helper who could assemble the meals if I am otherwise engaged or indisposed. Thanks for taking the time to do this project!

Next, I am going to work on my tortilla recipe ( i am going to go back and rewatch the one you did) because in my house, we can get by with out bread using a tortilla or another flatbread-type option. I'm a whole 39 DAYS older than my husband. He teased me when I turned 30. I said, "Get it out of your system, because you will not do that to me when I turn 40!"
I love this; this is our prepping modus operandi, (except for some dehydrating and I only have pressure-canned meat, which I have now stopped doing. I buy more canned meat at the supermarket.)
The British seem to think that we have much more money, and much bigger homes. I wish that I could convince them that our prices of everything are higher,(including healthcare) , and that not all Americans have basements and pantries, and we are not all homesteaders..

I feel that I will be able to prep better using the grocery store approach you will be showing on Wednesday. Also, do you have any videos utilizing freeze dried foods that you purchase? I have purchased a large amount of this type of food and am so afraid I will be disappointed if the time comes that I actually have to use it. I hate to open my cans just to test it since it would ruin the use by date. Really appreciate all that you and Jim do for this community.
