  • Learn the double haul fly cast from Josh with Musky Fool Fly Fishing Co. This video is part 1 of a 2 part series and will lay the ground work for you to proficiently cast medium - large musky flies.
At its core double haul casting increases line speed that transfers power into the rod. This power is used to fight through windy conditions, add distance, and when it comes to musky fly fishing… It delivers large flies to the target.
It’s the foundation of all musky fly casting, even when using the two handed technique (featured in part 2). You’ll want to know how to double haul!
There can be a bit of a learning curve when developing this skill as the coordination may feel awkward at first. Once mastered it’s relatively effortless and enjoyable. This technique will greatly improve your fly casting ability regardless of what you’re fishing for.
    What's covered in this video:
    • A brief overview of double hauling
    • Common musky fly rod & line set ups
    • Fly rundown
    • Exercises to build your skillset
    • Putting it all together
    • Bonus tips

Double hauling just casts mistakes further.....really wish muskie fly makers would read more about spey and grease line flies. Then they would learn to tie something that doesn't need to be double hauled. A few good ones out there.

One of the issues with those types of flies for this application is when you are in bigger water, mainly lakes, and you need the fly to elicit an aggressive presentation without the aid of swinging it or using the current. Agree that there is a lot of overdressing in big flies that does nothing to aid the presentation of the fly itself, but I also dont shy away from a heavy fly if the weight aids in the movement it has.
