Tropic Thunder was filmed on my Island of Kauai in Hawaii. Known as “The Garden Island”, we are the go to place anytime Hollywood wants to film any Jungle Scenes for a Movie. King Kong (1976), South Pacific, Jumanji, all the Jurassic Parks, The Descendants, Soul Surfer, North, North Shore, Flight of the Intruder, Dinosaur, Fantasy Island (TV Series), Six Days Seven Nights, Lilo & Stitch, Jungle Cruise, F9, and a ton more!
I remember when Tropic Thunder was here filming. They rented my new Box Truck to use in the movie as a “Film Crew” Vehicle. They painted it up for the Movie and when they returned it, they had to paint it back to it’s original color.
I mean, to the minute of detail of factory finish. I was like, you guys don’t HAVE TO do that. Close enough was fine. But they were willing to spend a lot of money to return my truck better than new! So from then on, I never wondered again why they use up Millions of Dollars to Film a Movie! 🤷‍♂️
I also got to meet Nick Nolte! And let me tell you! His hair and rough look in the movie was NOT done by the makeup department… it was ALREADY Movie Perfect ! 😅

Downey Jr's character is definitely a stab at over the top method actors like Daniel Day Lewis, where most movie-goers don't know what the actor actually looks like outside of a role, and going a bit meta with it that the actor himself doesn't even know who he is after so many roles.

Could be also a parody of old Hollywood's approach of casting white actors as different ethnicities, with sometimes hillarious results like John Wayne's Genghis Khan or my personal favourite (because it is quite good from the acting standpoint, just ludicrous in concept), Audrey Hepburn as Native American in The Unforgiven (she was also cast as a Native woman in Green Mansions couple years prior but that movie is absolutely forgotten).

I'm so happy this stream made me want to watch this movie. If you watch it every three or four years and kind of forget the jokes a little bit, you laugh harder every single time.
Also as someone who is trying to get off tobacco after 14 years, I had so much more empathy for Jack Black's character this time.

i'm 12 mins into this and i'm crying with laughter - i completely forgot how utterly hilarious this film is and that Satans Alley scene is goddamn side splitting funny
Me and my wife got into this film and only 1 hour in did we realise its Tom Cruise and were blown away - Grossman is one of Toms finest hours
One of my fave scenes with RDJ is such a small thing... theres a scene where the characters are discussing something and they cut to RDJ and he's just gurning some weird ass faces like he's struggling to comprehend whats going on but at the same time going slightly insane being stuck in the role too - its a small shot but every time i see it it kills me!

One of the best scenes for me (besides all the Tom Cruise scenes) was the "what do you mean YOU people scene. That was amazing. The themes touched upon there could not have been done better. It would have to be done by actual african american actors, it would be a drama and it would have to be the focus of the whole movie.
I just loved how the movie condensed really difficult and complex themes in so short exchanges.

A movie in the vein of Tropic Thunder is Hail, Caesar! 2016. The comedy doesn't get as crude, but has the self-depreciating approach. This Coen brothers film didn't generate a lot of attention, but this is a fun movie. I consider it greatly underrated.
