DeMille made up a colonel's outfit for himself and dressed his actors and crew, including Pickford, in snappy fake uniforms. Pretty tacky, given that men - including those in DeMille's company - were being sent off to die, for realsies, in the killing fields of France. His niece Agnes DeMille seemed embarrassed to relate the anecdotes, which also included a sour observation that Mary Pickford smiled and kissed her boys away to a real War which some did not come back from.
