I own both cars so I am completely unbiased.
The verdict is purely my opinion, so digest the information within the video and decide which one you prefer for yourself!

Really enjoy your videos. They're like watching my best mate review cars for me: honest, fair and none of the Clarkson-esque hyperbole other TH-cam car reviewers seem prone to. Can't wait for my Up GTI to arrive in a couple of weeks :)
The lupo gti now months after this vid there is only 560 left on UK roads, an already becoming a classic. When you have a family approach you outside the local car park and flag you down at the crossing because their son wants to know what it is (he was 13) as he was a vw fan and wants to chat to you about it. That in itself is going to make it a classic as future generations already think it's awesome. Took him for a sprint back to there house with his dad in tow and bless him smiling from ear to ear, dad thanked me and was really humble

I'm in the USA, and always wanted the Lupo GTI...however VWoA
never offered the car here. I always considered this the spiritual successor to the MKI Golf GTI...
Its lovely to see that Lupo GTI in original condition. They're getting very collectible now!
I used to own a Lupo GTi in black, full heated leather on a 02 plate absolutely beautiful car to own I miss it so much 😭😭
The UP! looks like a washing machine, the Lupo looks so much better. I have a Lupo and i will never leave her for a UP!
If you like looking at cars stick with the Lupo, if you like driving them, a stock Up! leaves a stock Lupo for dead. Why else are so many Lupos modified? Both great cars so enjoy and yes I get the appeal of the Lupo but VW chassis development in those days was very poor.

I used to have a Raven blue Lupo GTI back in the day. It was a stunning little car, especially in that colour. The xenon lights had a really distinctive blue edge in the dark. A quick little car but coming from classic Mini Coopers I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed by the handling. That said I would love another one 😏 Nice vid by the way👍

Had a lupo gti in 2001. Payed £13k for it. That's £18k in today's money. So the Up gti is a bargain.
Interesting comparison thanks. Had a lupo gti and spent a packet trying to sort out the handling, without success. Also agree about the box which just wasn't suited to enthusiastic driving. Still a great little car which will always hold a soft spot for me. Haven't driven the Up and have gone back to tried and tested renaultsport for giggles now - twingo 133 - no need to brake for corners any more. Similar concept in terms of power with an amazing chassis too. Would be curious to see how the up gti stacks up to it.

Thinking of a UP! GTI in a year's time (has to be white not new but ex-demo or such like) in place of my 6c 150ps 1.4TSI BlueGT..... thoughts wolkwizard? Don't need lots of space as normally just me but race mountain bikes in XC regularly. Also I do a few track days a year never been able to afford a track dedicated car...... whatever I own/drive has to normal road stuff + track day.....might be a bit scary will lack of top end performance on UP! GTI however as I proved many years ago in my 2001 Polo GTI & my current BlueGT don't always need lots of BHP to have fun on track.
Andrew -question, would the Polo GTI front seats fit on the runners of the UpGti? or a low cost mod?

I live in Denmark, and own a Lupo gti from late 2003. 6 speed, leather seats, navigation and so on.. i was wondering if you had any idea of how much they were going for, when they were new out of the factory?
Not even 1 has been sold i Denmark from new, and i have not been able to gather any information about it. Mine i imported from Germany, and also there they had no idea what the price was when it was new.
UP GTI shows improvement in dynamics - I had a 1994 Corsa GSi 1.6 with no chassis finesse - once you’d driven Lupo back to back you can see 16 years of progress - great review - now need to lobby VW Oz to introduce UP GTI here - Up wasn’t popular here and was dropped as no automatic/DSG nor profit margin under Polo in VW range - hope another post coming soon :)
I like the Lupo better. The rolling is a rollbar issue to meet the GTI standard comfort for a beam rear suspension. Clearly the chassis isn't the problem.
To me the GTI mk5 was terribly rolling even after the installation of a Bilstein B14, rollbars solved the problem. So I would say get a Lupo GTI and a set of rollbars. If the chassis has problems then underframe braces will stiffen it.
I don't see the point of a 5 door only A platform. Hell, I don't see the point of a 5 door only C platform. Bring back 2/3 doors car
Watched/read nearly every Up GTI review and this is by far the most measured that I’ve watched. Some car journos blast it for not being as fast, plush or adjustable as 28k hot hatches (????) and deem it a non GTI while others get completely lost in the mk1 GTI romance.
Not a perfect car by any means but it is fun, and for 14k these days I’m unaware of any other car that comes close. Bargain really, it even has heated seats and some ambient lighting 😂😂
Really pleasing to see that VW are coming back round to offering cheeky fun as the USP with things like this and the Clubsport S. Sure other cool things will lie ahead!
Will defo be ordering an Up GTI in a few months and then prepare to wait for half a year after that 😂
Thanks Tom, it's comments like yours that keep me going and thanks for pointing out the heated seats and ambient lighting - two features that VW didn't need to include but did.

I’d have the Lupo all day long because of the shape, I like older stuff, that’s why I’m still running a 16 year old mk4 V6 4motion, the build quality is far superior to that of new cars, our Golf R, almost 3 years old, 4.5k on the clock is head and shoulders, thee best thing on 4 wheels, in my opinion.
Awesome video, Lupo Gti has the same alloys as the MK1 Velociti in South Africa, hope this channel grows, fan in South Africa
Thanks Bradley! While talking about the G60 brakes, I did actually say the Lupo could run Mk1 or Mk2 Golf wheels but decided to cut this bit as thought it was a bit too geeky but wish I'd left it now ;)
Nice vid!, BUT the Lupo GTI will become an icon like the Golf GTI mk1 , the UP will never be!
Do you have a crystal ball? Lupo will never achieve the status of the Mk1 Golf gti.

The Lupo in generally not but the GTI will be, also much more rare even now then the Mk 1 GTI.

I was always a fan of the Lupo but after the scary stories in forums of them all needing replacement gearboxes I went for an Audi A2 which I Still have instead but fitted Koni FSDs when I should have as you said fitted Bilstein B9s.
I have ordered an Up Gti with everything in Black,I think for its Price it's worth these small aesthetic sacrifices plus 50 mpg.
I can wait as my old car just keeps going
The A2 does that and more even with 147k on it.
I doubt the 1.0 TSI will do that,is the really a replacement for Displacement?
its the standard lupos with crap gearboxes. The gti ones don't really have any issues with that. I've had two of them and neither gave me any problems!
skajme correct the 1.0/1.4 lupo boxes seemed to be made of chocolate but the GTIs are solid

volkswizard thanks for great review. I've recently received VW Lupo (nothing special 1.0 benzin 2000year -410gbp with steerwheel going little to left by itself). My next car supposed to be different model but man Up! GTI here we go someday;3

Had my Up GTi two weeks now and it's fun.. everyone is entitled to their opinion. I like my new car. Came from a 10 year old diesel.
Another great review, I do like the Up Gti possibly a purchase for my partner in the future. Top marks!
the battery in the boot is a plus for weight, and you forgot the that the lupo has a hood lifter the up doesn´t regards Sören still good video

Good stuff as usual.
Compare turbo engine with non turbo engine is not a fair comparison.
When i see the up front it reminds me a small golf, but when i see from side don't like it.
The Lupo has is own style, in any angle. Front lights in xenon looks much better. And I like so much the Lupo's engine sound.
The up is more confortable and stable but to me more boring.
Lupo - wolf in latin.

I’ve never liked how high the standard gti suspension was. It’s like it’s on stilts.
I had a VW Lupo 1.4s from new and it was a great fun car despite not being anything like as good as the GTi version
I always wanted the GTi but recently took delivery of an Up GTi and l think it’s great.
I’ve also got a Clio 182.
Sounds like a good 2 cars to own as the Clio is properly quick unlike Lupo or Up! GTI but the Up! is a nice efficient daily
Oh l don’t know, the Up GTi feels pretty rapid through the gears, faster than the figures suggest.
But the Clio is a rocket. It’s been rolling road tuned and has a Janspeed exhaust and induction kit with Eibach springs solid top mounts and cup dampers.
How does it compare to the UP! TSI? Would be great if you could compare them...Great video!

Pitch and roll can be solved by a set of decent coil overs and larger rear anti roll bar

what would you think about a lupo gti as a fist car?
It's OK, it has ABS and you really need to work it to go fast which means you don't go fast by mistake unlike a lot of modern cars. An Up! (especially a TSI) would be a more sensible but less stylish choice though and similar money to a Lupo GTI and a lot easier to find in good condition.

Always wanted to drive the Lupo GTI. My first car was a 6N2 Polo GTI with the same engine which I had 4 years. About half a sec slower to 60 but I still timed it at 8.3 and was putting out 127bhp on stock power. Once got 47mpg out of it! The VVT is great and sounds nice with an induction kit.
The Polo had a nicer interior and a proper glovebox. Dash design is very nice. Handling was so so but coilovers transformed it. Steering wasn't great but had a bit more weight to it than a standard Polo. The leather was really comfy.
As of last year my GTI is still on the road after 19 years but looking rough after I sold it in 2010. Gearbox went on mine, the Lupo got the better 6 speed.
I'd probably have the Lupo over the Up

For the price you should consider what if offers rather than what it may lack.
Easy answer lupo more fun up is better for day to day driving I've got both on my third up and sixth lupo

I think you'll find the vent near the phone cradle actually sucks air in rather than blows it out. I think its the intake when you select air re circulation on the ventilation system.
It definitely blows out on mine in normal use - just checked - whether it does something different in re-circulation mode I can't say as I've never used it!
My apologies -you are right. With my manual system it doesn't blow in 3 out of 4 settings (screen, feet and screen + feet) but when set to blow on driver/passenger it does indeed blow, though seemingly more at the roof than driver or passenger face level.
I can’t believe VW put drums on this. What year are they stuck in 1989!?
Charside drums are cheaper and being such a small and light car fitting disks would actually be unnecessary anyways
Rear drums are fine for road work
Lupo GTi is the classic. It's like a modern Peugeot 205 GTi when you look at the horsepower
Not sure it’s a fair comment to say the UP GTI looks like the standard car.

dujalowlife no..... both the Lupo GTI and Up GTI are in a different league to anything else VW did. They are both small, affordable, low power and not really fast but more fun than anything else

I have trouble understanding how you realy can compare a 2002 car with a 2018 car....i mean isn't everything being upgraded in time....something with apples and pears i believe.....
The up! has 115 hp and rear drum brakes - the older Lupo has 125 hp and rear disc brakes so the old car is superior in a lot of ways which is what makes the comparison valid. Newer doesn't always mean better and definitely doesn't always mean more fun.

If you check the next issue of VW Driver magazine, I've written a review of the new Polo GTI & 6N2 gets a very positive mention. There is only so much you can put in a video that isn't about Polos :)
volkswizard that's great! It seems like, with regards to comparisons to the up gti the 6n2 gti is either forgotten about or completely overlooked for the more iconic lupo, despite being a better comparison (in my opinion) particularly in terms of size and weight etc
I had a 2001 Polo GTI (owned for 3 years) never drove a Lupo GTI. Can say & agree the Polo GTI 6n2 sharing same engine it just loved being revved & egged on & rewarding the more you pushed thought the handling was very good in my 6n2 (very hard even standard suspension) - always always felt needed the 6speed not noisy but "busy" as you described (remember well 4-4500k rpm on motorway cruising 75-85mph).
Love the UP GTI, the Lupo is terrific too. Great video.

These are very similar in size so the comparison is reasonable, also the cheapest in the range too, but there the similarity ends, the UP has better brakes and lighter power steering. Visually I prefer the Seat Arosa to the Lupo anyway but both are prettier than the boxy UP. The UP is all about emissions though.
My comment though is in the form of a question, where is the improvement... I cant see anything other than the brakes. Save £10k buy an old GTI Lupo
The Up! GTI engine is so much more responsive! Yes you can rev the Lupo and it’s fun but in real world driving by normal people it’s flat as a fart. The Up! has more torque and gets it around 3000 rpm less. It’s also massively more efficient. That’s not the biggest improvement though. The Lupo GTI suspension is dangerous in standard form, hence why standard ones are so rare. Yes you can fix that for £700 but normal people don’t want modified cars. Standard vs standard, Lupo GTI wouldn’t see which way an Up! GTI went on a twisty road ( have driven both extensively)
@@volkswizard I don't disagree, but the Lupo had torqier options too, the 3 cylinder TDI would wipe the floor with the UP, easily remapped as well
I understand perfectly your position Volkswizard. Very clear and very honest. But completely WRONG. Who buys such little demons WANT to modify extensively his cars. Otherwise they are useless. I started 30 years ago with a Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI, heavily tuned, and now I have 6 cars all with my personal “details”. This is the car addiction! Who buys cars and leave them stock is not a Petrolhead. Is a 1:1 toys collector. This is my position . Probably a little extreme but with no compromise.
It’s the non turbo Lupo GTI every day of the week for me.
I can buy a 2005 Lupo GTI for 3-4000€ and put in better dampers and tune it to 145 hp - and still save 7-8000€ compared to buy a brand new Up GTI.
Where are you finding Lupo GTIs for that price?

What a load of crap.. I’ve driven both hard on bendy roads and daily driven.. after two weeks of driving the up gti I parked it back up at work and could not wait to get back in my lupo gti. Only thing a lupo needs is some half decent coilovers and a decent driver.

volkswizard well, the problem that you have here are the toyos, these tyres likes to slip like crazy; the oem Dunlop’s or a better compound 195 tyre makes the job better

This has been resolved since August 2021 when I invested in a Rode Radio Mic. This £200 investment wasn't possible in the early days of the channel
Everyone seems to have forgotten that the 106GTI and Saxo VTS were much more fun to drive than the Lupo. Somehow VW manages it to become the Icon, which it does not deserve to be.
Had a VTS back in the day was epic! Bought a lupo gti about a year ago! Love both cars kinda want a VTS again now lol
Absolutely true! But now they appear too cheap, too ugly and with no ac ( impossible to use in Italy ) . Lupo Gti is an Icon
The real difference? lupo Gti is awesome. And has a proper 4-cyl engine. Up is an horrible box with an horrible modern 3-cyl toy. Every other consideration is useless.

these are warm hatches at best, not even that, I'd say they're just normal econoboxes with some flairs. These are not pocket rockets. An Abarth 595 is and there's a world of difference in performance.

Zak Hobbs ok but these are not pocket rockets, there is nothing "rocket" about them, they are closer to a Chevy Spark than an actual hot hatch. You can't just call everything a hot hatch when the performance isn't there, I own a 500 abarth esseesse, a Polo GTI and a Peugeot 208 Allure the one with 120 hp out of a 1.6 NA engine, that Pug is more capable AND cheaper than the cars in the video and it's not even in the same universe as the Abarth or the Polo, pretending the cars in the video are of the same kin is ridiculous. Not even the Polo and the Abarth are true hot hatches, they're toys, they are "pocket rockets". Leon Cupra, Golf R, Focus RS, 308 GTI, those are HOT hatches.
mikecustoms again this is personal opinion, hot hatches should be remembered as Mk1 GTI, Renault 5, Metro Turbo, etc. A new Golf R is beyond “Hot Hatch”. I’ve driven both the Lupo GTI and Up! GTI... in my opinion they are fantastic fun to drive, admittedly not a lot of power, but a lack of power doesn’t make them any less hot hatch!
Zak Hobbs it's fine that there are clases, I just think the Up GTI is pushing it as it is a brand new "GTI" with run of the mill performance. The Lupo is fine as it comes from an era where the hot hatch was a simple formula, now everything is complex and expectations are higher. The old hot hatches were fine too as they were above and beyond their normal counterparts, a Renault 5 Turbo was a whole other beast compared to the normal 5. This Up is just too close to the TSI, too normal. I'm sure it's fun, well, so is the TSI, or my Pug, or an old Ford Ka. This is a car that doesn't belong anywhere, it's fan service, it's a way for Volkswagen to capitalize on the GTI brand further. Maybe introduce themselves to the youngest audiences. The young drivers craving a Polo or a Golf, might see this as an option. But that is it. We tend to mystify the hot hatch. This car is, in the end, an UP TSI with a GTI badge on it. And the GTI badge doesn't give it superpowers, it just makes helps selling it. That is it. BTW I don't find my Polo particularly fun to drive, that doesn't make it any less of a pocket rocket.
