Will follow this with interest. As a Norfolkman who was lucky enough to spend a lot of their childhood on the Broads, I am delighted that we may have a new Wherry. There is nothing more Norfolk Broads than seeing one of those sails over the marshes
i wish you the best of luck with finding cargo! ive worked and sailed with the new built thames barge blue mermaid, from the start they intended to use the barge to carry cargo but so far they havnt managed to fill the hold. i belive they will eventually but its not easy to find. most of what they do is sail training

Hi Don, just want to notify about the book "Our Wherry in Wendish Lands" by Daughty. It's a very pleasant travel book of Daughty's adventures in northern Germany. The wherry plays a major role. The book got partly translated into German and quickly sold out.

Fascinating! I think this might be the same kind of boat that we call a “gundalow” in New England. There’s a replica that sails out of Portsmouth, NH. They were very useful for inshore trade!
Thanks for this, I've looked up the gundalow, and yes, they are very similar! Single sail design, on a counterweighted, tabernacle-stepped mast/spar, fairly flat-bottomed and double-ended - that description applies equally to a wherry or a gundalow! The major differences are that gundalows have leeboards and are carvel planked, characteristics which they share with the other great British river/coastal traders, the Thames Barge. But overall, they are more similar to the trading wherry.

Although those wherries were named after gem stones, Sir Garnet in the story is more likely named after Sir Garnet Wolseley who was a celebrated military figure of the late 19th century. There is also a pub in Norwich named after him. He was the poster boy of Victorian adventure stories so a young adventurer such as Arthur Ransome would have been well aware of him.
Yes, you are absolutely right! The Arthur Ransome Trust did a nice FB post about Lady Garnet, and they made mention of Ransome's connection with Sir Garnet Wolseley.

Another good reason for black sails: Look at a white surface next to a black surface covered in dew. The black absorbs the sun's rays and starts to steam, the white reflects the rays and takes a lot longer to dry. Same goes for cars, why Transit vans used to be white: to Keep cool in the sun.

I believe they built wherries there a long time back. The reed cutters used a small version of a wherry to transport their reed, tools and themselves around the broads propelled by pole. The second oldest racing yacht is in the broads museum at Stalam the oldest is on the Isle of Man.

Doughty, from Friesland through the Mecklenburg Lakes to Bohemia. Its a fantastic book from the 1890’s. It’s one of three by the same author on Wherry sailing. I believe The Doughty Wherry was converted from a trading one and was not a ‘Wherry yacht’. Happy to chip in. Good luck and I look forward to the build and seeing a Wherry sailing on the Thames.
Yes, I think so, my current plan is to have a slip keep for sailing on the Tideway and Thames Estuary, obviously not for non-tidal and the Medway. I have briefly looked at Doughty's account of Gypsy's travels in Europe, definitely need to give it a proper read, quite an amazing wherry, only foreign going wherry.

*IM A TAILOR* of historical mens clothing and I had to LEARN the imperial system to read the old pattern books - its total insanity even though I can now do it without thinking
I live in a metric country but served my apprenticeship working on American machinery so using either system is second nature now.......little tip, if you have to work with someone who is highly opposed to either the metric or imperial system give them drawings with the vertical dimensions in metric and the horizontal in imperial and watch them lose their shit.....

Now I have another project to watch.😁 What's most exciting is going back to sailing for transporting cargo. I hope this trend continues, at least for smaller loads.

This reminiscence may allow you to create an ancillary team of volunteers - perhaps retired with available time and seeking an interest - who'd like to pitch in, not all work requires a skilled hand, does it ? The yachting press might help with this, but it doesn't hurt to ask, or to have help. Best wishes going forward.

Amongst the retired community prepared to help will be people with other skills - financial management, fundraising, marketing, materials procurement and purchasing, etc - so the task for you will be to put the round pegs in the round holes. An interesting challenge perhaps, and you may have to approach a professional organisation or two to enquire if retired members local to you might be prepared to donate some time ..... Make sure you wear the Captains hat though. Good luck !
Just saw this video that popped up in my suggested stream. My Great Uncle, Harry Hopthrow, was owner of one of the wherries, Dragon, that you showed in this video. I think he sailed her from the late 20's until just after WWII. I know that he took my father out sailing when he was on holiday from school in the 30's. I'm sure you know the history of that boat which is well documented. I think I have got some notes and pictures stashed away somewhere.
Just realised that my dates would be wrong - think he acquired it just after WWII, Dad spent summers on her in the mid 40's. I'll be visiting Dad soon and will ask if he has any memories (and maybe dates) to share.

Great video! Any chance you’ll go into the economics of sail cargo? I’ve always wondered what a future with sail cargo might look like; maybe a packet ship regular schedule or more marketing and maintaining low carbon footprint. Either way, Best of luck!
Thanks! It will be interesting to see where Lady Garnet will fit into the sail cargo movement. Most sail cargo ships operate on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, or the North Sea. Inland cargo will be slightly different I would think, and I would argue there are more opportunities inland. The build will take a number of years, but the whole time I am building I will also be sending out feelers to see what type of companies are most interested in utilising Lady Garnet. I'm hoping to establish some steady relationships with a few companies, that would be a good start! And yes, I will certainly give any updates on that in future episodes.

Thank you! It's a funny thing, I had never heard that Ransome's Sir Garnet was named after Wolseley until I posted this video, and now I've had three comments about it! Apparently he was also rumoured to be the inspiration for Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Modern Major General' in The Pirates of Penzance.
The timing certainly has worked out nicely, although it was completely accidental! I had though Tally Ho still had two years to go… 😉 The build will be on the non-tidal Thames, yes, as that is where I live and work.

@@buildingladygarnet Hi. You seem sincere in your interest to know. Could be a long topic, but I'll try to summarize. I've been on both sides when it comes to lectures. A quick story. Had a professor once who was an endless talker, seemingly oblivious to his impact on the students. One day, I realized I wasn't quite understanding. I looked around and nearly all of my classmates had glassy eyes or had fallen asleep. I interrupted the professor and told him I was having a very difficult time following. Felt like I was drowning in details without understanding the point. I asked if he could please do something to summarize or say how this information was important. He replied, sure, he could do that, and believe it or not, he went on talking in more detail and even longer than he did the first time. Very knowledgeable people, such as PhDs and others, often have a deep passion for their chosen subject. That passion is good, but it can also lead them astray when it comes to communicating. Outside of research articles, the information they provide is not for their peers. It's for laymen or people just beginning to learn. Those people might think it's interesting that the person studies the mating habits of the East African chuchu beetle. But they will _never ever_ care that the chuchu beetle rotates its ankles before it starts mating. That kind of detail is only appreciated by a very small group of people. I'm just strongly recommending that you give some thought to who your audience is, what you really want to convey, say it more succinctly, and minimize the meandering. Or, just ignore me and do what you're doing. In any case, good luck with your channel and your boat.
Imperial measurement (feet and inches) is a human based system which makes it instinctive to use. It’s also very handy for halving and doubling. 3ft / 2 is 1.5 feet. 918 mm needs a lot more thinking and it’s easy to mark it wrong.
Yes, I was discussing this with a work colleague, I was pointing out that 12 is actually a better number than 10, certainly in terms of division, as 12 can be divided by 2, 3, 4 and 6, whilst 10 is only divisible by 2 and 5. For multiplying, 12 is perhaps not quite as convenient as 10, but of course that's why we just call it 1 foot instead of 12 inches!
I’m very much in favor of what you are doing, I love seeing wooden boats being built, and I will enjoy watching your build. But I sure hope you talk a whole lot less as you take us forward.
Because it's a traditional measurement system, a lot of materials are in various imperial increments. When designers adopt the metric system, it seems they often select of round metric dimensions for convenience, forgetting to make sure the materials align. Things like insulation batts, plywood, lengths of pipe, etc. often require a lot of trimming & extra labor when designers choose stiffener spacing of 1000mm or 500mm instead of 4' (1219mm) or 2' (610mm). The worker tasked with building to the print then spend time trimming to fit, or filling gaps unnecessarily. The designers also often forget the nuance of decimals (they do this in imperial, too, but not as egregiously)--specifying dimensions to a tenth of a millimeter (equivalent to dimensioning to the thousandth of an inch) or hundredth (equivalent to ten-thousandths).
No, she will have a shallow keel along her length, and a slipping keel which can be added when sailing in deeper water. I'll be doing a closer look at her design soon!
Hi Chris, the £15,000 is for the early costs, which include wood to build the boatshed and strongback, more machinery, ply for the lofting floor, oak for the keel, keelson, stempost and sternpost, etc.
@@buildingladygarnet Sorry but totally unrealistic in both money required and making a living as a commercial wherry, many docks are closed and lorries are so much quicker and cheaper at 40 tons, dreamers who support you trying the impossible, the only person who gains is you getting a wherry by other's paying for it
@@chrisashdown8814 I have to disagree with you on both your points. There is a place for sail cargo, I am determined to make this work. And there are so many instances throughout history of people scoffing at what looked like impossible dreams, that not only succeeded but became mainstream. Also, you are wrong that I am the only one who gains from this. Just look at how many people supported Leo, Acorn to Arabella and other boat builds. Those were just pleasure yachts, Leo isn't going to use Tally Ho for cargo, she will just be his yacht. But people still watched, donated and supported because they did get something out of it - entertainment and knowledge. They liked to watch his videos and they wanted to help those video continue, even if they never get to sail on Tally Ho or even see her in person. I've had so many comments from people who are just keen to watch the build, or are excited about seeing another wherry sailing. The plan for her to carry cargo is a major point of focus for me, but I suspect that for many viewers, it's merely an additional attraction, but far from being the main attraction.
Now, why aren’t we encouraging/demanding this net zero transportation solution to be reinstated? Remove VAT from goods transported under sail! No more carbon tax thanks, tax reductions for traditional or modern net zero technology, please.

Interesting, I absolutly love the Passat, a three mast Windjammer, incredible that it remained in trade service into the 1950ties.

Yes, I think so, my current plan is to have a slip keep for sailing on the Tideway and Thames Estuary, obviously not for non-tidal and the Medway. I have briefly looked at Doughty's account of Gypsy's travels in Europe, definitely need to give it a proper read, quite an amazing wherry, only foreign going wherry.
The travels of the Gypsy are more fun if tracked on Google Earth!
Good luck with your build. I love the Ransome tales and remember reading the Coot Club to my kids on a Norfolk Broads holiday many years ago. It will be grand to see another wherry on the broads

*IM A TAILOR* of historical mens clothing and I had to LEARN the imperial system to read the old pattern books - its total insanity even though I can now do it without thinking
I live in a metric country but served my apprenticeship working on American machinery so using either system is second nature now.......little tip, if you have to work with someone who is highly opposed to either the metric or imperial system give them drawings with the vertical dimensions in metric and the horizontal in imperial and watch them lose their shit.....

This reminiscence may allow you to create an ancillary team of volunteers - perhaps retired with available time and seeking an interest - who'd like to pitch in, not all work requires a skilled hand, does it ? The yachting press might help with this, but it doesn't hurt to ask, or to have help. Best wishes going forward.

Amongst the retired community prepared to help will be people with other skills - financial management, fundraising, marketing, materials procurement and purchasing, etc - so the task for you will be to put the round pegs in the round holes. An interesting challenge perhaps, and you may have to approach a professional organisation or two to enquire if retired members local to you might be prepared to donate some time ..... Make sure you wear the Captains hat though. Good luck !

Just saw this video that popped up in my suggested stream.
My Great Uncle, Harry Hopthrow, was owner of one of the wherries, Dragon, that you showed in this video. I think he sailed her from the late 20's until just after WWII. I know that he took my father out sailing when he was on holiday from school in the 30's. I'm sure you know the history of that boat which is well documented. I think I have got some notes and pictures stashed away somewhere.
Just realised that my dates would be wrong - think he acquired it just after WWII, Dad spent summers on her in the mid 40's. I'll be visiting Dad soon and will ask if he has any memories (and maybe dates) to share.

Great video! Any chance you’ll go into the economics of sail cargo? I’ve always wondered what a future with sail cargo might look like; maybe a packet ship regular schedule or more marketing and maintaining low carbon footprint. Either way, Best of luck!
Thanks! It will be interesting to see where Lady Garnet will fit into the sail cargo movement. Most sail cargo ships operate on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, or the North Sea. Inland cargo will be slightly different I would think, and I would argue there are more opportunities inland. The build will take a number of years, but the whole time I am building I will also be sending out feelers to see what type of companies are most interested in utilising Lady Garnet. I'm hoping to establish some steady relationships with a few companies, that would be a good start! And yes, I will certainly give any updates on that in future episodes.

I think Sir Garnet ( The Wherry) was named after Sir Garnet Wolseley who was a Victorian general and well known enough in Norwich to have had a pub named after him.
Thank you! It's a funny thing, I had never heard that Ransome's Sir Garnet was named after Wolseley until I posted this video, and now I've had three comments about it! Apparently he was also rumoured to be the inspiration for Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Modern Major General' in The Pirates of Penzance.

The timing certainly has worked out nicely, although it was completely accidental! I had though Tally Ho still had two years to go… 😉 The build will be on the non-tidal Thames, yes, as that is where I live and work.

I've been on both sides when it comes to lectures. A quick story. Had a professor once who was an endless talker, seemingly oblivious to his impact on the students. One day, I realized I wasn't quite understanding. I looked around and nearly all of my classmates had glassy eyes or had fallen asleep. I interrupted the professor and told him I was having a very difficult time following. Felt like I was drowning in details without understanding the point. I asked if he could please do something to summarize or say how this information was important. He replied, sure, he could do that, and believe it or not, he went on talking in more detail and even longer than he did the first time.
Very knowledgeable people, such as PhDs and others, often have a deep passion for their chosen subject. That passion is good, but it can also lead them astray when it comes to communicating. Outside of research articles, the information they provide is not for their peers. It's for laymen or people just beginning to learn. Those people might think it's interesting that the person studies the mating habits of the East African chuchu beetle. But they will _never ever_ care that the chuchu beetle rotates its ankles before it starts mating. That kind of detail is only appreciated by a very small group of people.
I'm just strongly recommending that you give some thought to who your audience is, what you really want to convey, say it more succinctly, and minimize the meandering.
Or, just ignore me and do what you're doing.
In any case, good luck with your channel and your boat.

Imperial measurement (feet and inches) is a human based system which makes it instinctive to use. It’s also very handy for halving and doubling.
3ft / 2 is 1.5 feet. 918 mm needs a lot more thinking and it’s easy to mark it wrong.
Yes, I was discussing this with a work colleague, I was pointing out that 12 is actually a better number than 10, certainly in terms of division, as 12 can be divided by 2, 3, 4 and 6, whilst 10 is only divisible by 2 and 5. For multiplying, 12 is perhaps not quite as convenient as 10, but of course that's why we just call it 1 foot instead of 12 inches!
I’m very much in favor of what you are doing, I love seeing wooden boats being built, and I will enjoy watching your build. But I sure hope you talk a whole lot less as you take us forward.
Yes of course, once I actually get started on the build, it will be more boatbuilding and less talking!
Because it's a traditional measurement system, a lot of materials are in various imperial increments. When designers adopt the metric system, it seems they often select of round metric dimensions for convenience, forgetting to make sure the materials align. Things like insulation batts, plywood, lengths of pipe, etc. often require a lot of trimming & extra labor when designers choose stiffener spacing of 1000mm or 500mm instead of 4' (1219mm) or 2' (610mm). The worker tasked with building to the print then spend time trimming to fit, or filling gaps unnecessarily.
The designers also often forget the nuance of decimals (they do this in imperial, too, but not as egregiously)--specifying dimensions to a tenth of a millimeter (equivalent to dimensioning to the thousandth of an inch) or hundredth (equivalent to ten-thousandths).

Hi Chris, the £15,000 is for the early costs, which include wood to build the boatshed and strongback, more machinery, ply for the lofting floor, oak for the keel, keelson, stempost and sternpost, etc.
@@buildingladygarnet Sorry but totally unrealistic in both money required and making a living as a commercial wherry, many docks are closed and lorries are so much quicker and cheaper at 40 tons, dreamers who support you trying the impossible, the only person who gains is you getting a wherry by other's paying for it
@@chrisashdown8814 I have to disagree with you on both your points. There is a place for sail cargo, I am determined to make this work. And there are so many instances throughout history of people scoffing at what looked like impossible dreams, that not only succeeded but became mainstream. Also, you are wrong that I am the only one who gains from this. Just look at how many people supported Leo, Acorn to Arabella and other boat builds. Those were just pleasure yachts, Leo isn't going to use Tally Ho for cargo, she will just be his yacht. But people still watched, donated and supported because they did get something out of it - entertainment and knowledge. They liked to watch his videos and they wanted to help those video continue, even if they never get to sail on Tally Ho or even see her in person. I've had so many comments from people who are just keen to watch the build, or are excited about seeing another wherry sailing. The plan for her to carry cargo is a major point of focus for me, but I suspect that for many viewers, it's merely an additional attraction, but far from being the main attraction.
