If you are traveling for thr first time to Schengen zone than in most of the cases you will get a visa with validity slightly more than your travel plan. Based on my experience if you are a first timer and have not travelled to US, UK or Canada in the past so it can be maximum 30 days .
Converting tourist visa to work visa is possible but tricky .

You can only study in the country which issues you D Visa or residence permit. You can travel to other schengen countries but you cannot stay there for lot motes than 90 days
