- Een sample video waarbij we de Hegel H95 tegenover de - goedkopere - Arcam SA10 zetten. Puur omdat het kan. We hebben Lorde Royals gepakt als samplenummer. Dit omdat er diep laag in zit wat een krachtige voeding vereist.
A sample video where we put the Hegel H95 against the - cheaper - Arcam SA10. Purely because it can be done. We took Lorde Royals as the sample track. This because of it's deep and strong bass which requires a powerful power supply.

There seems to be a large amount of boominess from both amps which may just be the recording or TH-cam's compression. On this recording alone I couldn't see enough in it to warrant spending twice the price on the Hegel. An interesting comparison, thanks for sharing.
I run an Arcam Sa10 through 80's Spendor LS 3/5 speakers. It does the job and sounds good. Also, got it for $680.00 new.
Both of them are good.

Did you precisely measure the volume level when switched from coax to analogue? Normally this drops a few dBs, so you have to compensate by adjusting the volume. I hear differences, definitely, but it’s important to keep the volume the same otherwise louder will usually sound better... Thanks for the test!
Yes... we match all the samples.
Great comparison, I’m considering both amps. To my ears, through headphones, the Hegel seems to have more definition and space around vocals but the Arcam compensates by being a little more extended. I think I prefer the Hegel but would need to hear both in person with my particular speakers - Revel M20.
I also read the Arcam can lose clarity at volume. Have you experienced this?
@@scottzahn3298 I have read comments about that with the SA20 (class G) amplifier. This is the SA10 (class AB). Not sure if there is any merit to those comments ? It should definitely not happen with the more powerful amplifier in the SA20..
@@stsimtso I just purchased the SA20. It sounds better the louder you turn it up. It’s a little boring at low volumes if I add my .02.

I am glad to finally hear hifi comparisons with a song I enjoy listening to and familiar with, and I can hear the difference through my setup. I too have Focals and I can hear the differences in the coax vs analogue. Now you got me curious with Metrum and their R2R technology. Have you heard their Onyx? How about Amethyst? Pavane is a little too expensive for me to justify, but their lower lines I can. If the Onyx sounds between similar and very similar to Pavane, I'll buy one. I'd like to know your opinions if you had a chance to listen to any of them.

No audiophiles upload with the music I love, so it’s difficult to get a grasp of what differences I’m supposed to listen for. We have similar speakers, we both stream, we both use integrated amps, I can’t hear a difference with cables, so I’m left with the dac differences, which I am in the market to upgrade to R2R. You’ll do me a giant favor if one day you can get to doing so!

Completely depends on the speakers, taste, etc...
both the amplfiers runs better via the analogue input, but the hegel cost three times the arcam and make a big difference
Thealphaaudio which one was better for you ? I have an Arcam SA20 and I like it but They told me Hegel is a good match with KEF and I have a pair of metas, what do you think about the H95 ??

Mijn voorkeur is de Arcam, lijkt wat opener en gedetaillereder te klinken als ik met mijn headphone luister. De Hegel wat heavy in het laag.
Dat is het punt. Daarom klinkt de Hegel mijns inziens duidelijk beter. En ik hoor dat zelfs op mijn laptop luidsprekers :') Veel meer body
I own Arcam SA10 and Arcam CDS27 SACD network streamer and this combo is superior to the DAC inside the SA10 via digital inputs.
It is, it's the DAC from the SA20/30 in the CDS27.
@@DomRivers67 Can't be as SA20/30 use ESS Sabre DAC chipset and the CDS27 uses Burr Brown. I think you are confusing CDS27 with CDS50
De bron is (via youtube) met name wat betreft de stemweergave, niet schoon genoeg om een redelijk vergelijk te maken. (Beluisterd op een Sennheiser HD800 hoofdtelefoon.)
de mids bij de Arcam lijken me wat afgevlakt tov de Hegel.

I owned a D290. The new sa10 is much faster, more neutral... Etc. Simply put: it's better accross the board.
@@TheAlphaAudio Thanks for the reply. The SA10 only has 50 watts per channel as opposed to the Alpha 10 which has 100 watts per channel. I currently have a Rega Mira Amp with an Arcam plus cd player but it just doesn't seem to cut it. I've got my heart set on the Alpha 10 or Delta 290 but can't decide
@@tessmarshall4840 The D290 is almost 30 years old. They improved a lot in those years. The SA10 is a better design. If you need more power, go for the SA20 or 30. Watts dont say that much. It's mostly the power supply that gives control and dynamics.

Arcam. Better balance in my opinion.
The clarity of the Hegel makes a Big difference!
Arcam has always voiced their amps to be rich sounding and non-fatiguing (the Arcam sound). Don't confuse clinical clarity with quality, I can't listen to these kind of amps personally for more than a few minutes. They might sound impressive in a shop but then are hard to enjoy long term at home.

@@superkleiz I can't say as I haven't heard it here. I don't rate the DAC in the SA10 so it should beat it here as it definitely lacks bass but I use an Arcam CDS27 SACD network player with the SA10 meaning I only use the amplification bit of the SA10. I only use the SA10 inputs for TV and Blu-ray.
However as I said before I like the Arcam sound, I've had many others in the past: Audiolab, Audionote, Marantz, Cambridge Audio, NAD and more.
Also the SA10 has a good phono input so my Thorens turntable would need a phono stage with the Hegel.
Also my speakers (Wharfdale Denton 80th Anniversary) only go down as low as 44Hz, those in the video probably go lower.
I've never even heard of Hegel until a few hours ago, there are more makes than ever nowadays.
If you heard careful, each time we change the sound among inputs and amplifiers, Arcam always is a bit bright (not harsh), with the "s-whistle" get into the music, sound seems goes a level down and getting flat. Especially the big differences I can hear are between upper mids, just before the tweeter.
The high frequencies with Hegel have "quietness" and are "open", both amplifiers are better with the external source.
Using the coaxial input of Hegel the sound is equal to the Arcam's analogue input and that's not very good for me since it cancels a really good external source and using the Hegel's analogue input we have the best sound of this comparison.

What you spend, is on you. Check some multitests we did. Maybe that helps.

I have the Cambridge AXA 25 and 35... Also have the SA10, love them all but the Arcam is the best.

De SA20 heb ik toen ook beluisterd en die speelt echt wel een klasse hoger en gaan wat mij betreft over de HEGEL heen, tegen een lagere prijs, maaaaaar....... smaken verschillen en daarover valt niet te twisten, ik kan mij ook goed voorstellen dat de HEGEL zeer goed in de smaak valt. Het ontloopt elkaar maar heel weinig als je mij vraagt.
Het was in dit geval een lastige. Ze liggen dicht tegen elkaar aan. Vandaar de video.
Zou eens leuk zijn als jullie eens de Rega Elex-R zouden kunnen doen....Weinig echte NL demo reviews over deze amp.
The Arcam costs less than half the price of the Hegel... $800 vs. $2,000. Would like to hear the Arcam SA20, which still saves one $500 but has 40 more WPC....

TheAlphaAudio Arcam seems to pair well with Focal.... My first Arcam was the Diva A65+ paired with JM Lab Daline 3.1s back in 01. I’ve since moved to Magnepans and Parasound separates in my music room. However, I’m in the market for a master bedroom suite setup with Focal Kanta and seriously considering the SA20.

With the USB being limited to 24 bit 96hz (on H95, H120 and H190) and other Inputs being bale to receive 24 bit 192 Hz: which inout is the best to use when connecting to PC and other digital sources?
USB isn't the best interface for music in any way. If you need usb, you best can use a very nice usb-receiver that spits out spdif via coax, aes or optical. Mutec makes very nice usb-receivers.

@@heyqt7485 There is more to quality than resolution / high-res. Noise (common mode noise for example) is also important. For noise can create jitter. Just like some connections are better (AES/EBU and Coaxial) than others (USB and Optical).
@@TheAlphaAudio i did experience jitter/interference when i used the optical cable from PC to amp and that led me to try to use my USB a/b with jitter bug from PC to amp as I already had it.
My optical cable was a standard cable whereas the jitterbug is from AudioQuest and the USB cable from Argon Audio. So in this specificsl situation i think the latter give the best sound, but in the future I will change my cables, but I'm not sure of what way of connecting would be the best.
I do not think my PC has coaxial, but I will check it out. Have I understood it correctly if I take it that you lost them in the following order:
1. Coaxial
2. Optical
3. USB?

The easiest thing to look for is where Lorde's voice is in the mix. is it higher, forward, or more intertwined in the background? None is bad or better than the other... its all about preference.

To my ears both had a little bit of an extra boominess in the lower-midbass section (I’m guessing, around 70-120Hz) when connected via analogue (might be specifics of the DAC of the player used). And then the Hegel seems to possess an intrinsic boominess in the same region, so when connected via analogue these add up producing even more boominess, which sometimes seems to go a little over the edge to my taste. Also, I think Arcam has a little bit wider stereo stage, but this I’m not 100% sure as the transition between the amps just happens to be in places where also the music flow changes, so it’s quite easily might be just my imagination.
Both sound great anyways. Also thanks to Focals, I guess.

I own both the arcam sa10 and a Hegel h120. (Same dac as the h95). And the difference is quite big in favour of the Hegel in my set up. The sa10 is very good value for money tho.

@@shuckylad You are comparing a $3200 75 watt Hegel to a $680.00 50 watt Arcam. Not a fair comparison and the Hegel should sound better. . I own the Sa10 and got it on sale for $680.00. It was a steal.
Neither unit was shown to best effect due to a bad signal, either from the source, a poor tone control choice, or interference in the speakers. Overblown bass and distortion was masking the sound. No way to make an accurate choice on this.

Yes. I do. Although it's less than I expected with these amps. But if you use some good headphones, you will notice a difference in the bass and mid/high. You can also download the wav files. Link in the description.

@@1jcc The Hegel is twice the price, but does offer network streaming and slightly more power. But well... The Arcam does come very close ... :-)

Hegel h95 лучше играет, бас круче, вокал живее, arcam sa10 очень стерильно. Тут пишут разницу не слышат, в нормальных наушниках надо слушать, а не в затычках за 5р.

слушал не в затычках а в audio- technica ATH pro-700 . Разницы практически нет , может чуток баса больше у Arcam.

Виталий, а что за наушники у вас? не слышу стерильности у аркам. Слышу , что звук очень похож у усилителей .Только у хегель лучше проработан бас,он при этом мощнее, немного лучше послезвучия, но манера подачи силовая, из-за чего в некоторых моментах голос солистки кажется более проработанным и артикулированным у аркам, у которого бас не напирает. Допускаю , что в реальности все может быть вообще по-другому.

В хороших наушниках (audeze lcd-2) разница хорошо слышна. Hegel лучше определённо, но он и дороже. Аркам более нейтральный и стерильный. Сам имею ресивер Arcam AVR 200, он звучит очень чисто и детально, но драйва не хватает. Вообще усилители лучше сравнивать на тяжёлом "металле", тогда разница сразу ощутима. Такие простенькие попсовые песни с вылизанной записью будут хорошо звучать на чем угодно!

Not really a very good track to test these amps' capabilities.
Arcam sounds way more natural and musical, Hegel is artificially and annoyingly, falsely detailes.
