I made one of these out of a Crosman pellet tin with a screw on lid, got a sheet of carbon felt at Lowe's hanging next to the solder on a rack, and a stainless steel screen strainer from Walmart for a dollar. Then made a mini one from a Nivia skin cream tin.
so technically would take $3 to make 3 PLUS another $12 for your labor, so technically you broke even, at least for the purchased one, you also get an Esbit one burner / windshield. So it's still more value to buy it for $15 bucks.
dollar tree has large and small slip top tins a buck and quarter for 4 of the small and 2 of the large ones! you don;t even need the felt and screen just burn hand sanitizer gel in them works just as good!!
WHAT I GOING TO DO, Ernie recommends it, I gotta have it! Well, maybe not as bad as that- after all, I have a Trangia Model 25 , 5 Model 27’s, 3 T28’s (Mini Trangia)and a couple of Soto Navigators! Every family member has there own set up plus a back up system!
#PaleoHikerMD, Hey Ernie, HAVE YOU SEEN THE 2 NEW TRANGIA MICRO LIGHT UL COOKSETS? About $35.00 each of two different sets. One has a Spirit Burner and the other the Gel burner set!
I was sick this week and spent all my downtime watching backpacking content and ordering things for a camping kit (dreaming I could get outside instead of laying on the couch in a haze hocking up loogies). I swear I watched this guy boil DOZENS of pots of water trying to decide on an alcohol burner set. This is ultimately the one I chose, because it was basically the only ethanol burner I could find online that included carbon felt in it (making it more spill-resistant I would think) and quicker+easier+cheaper to get them premade rather than doing it myself. I placed that order some 4 days ago.... Now what do I see? This video goes up! Glad I ordered it before they sold out!
I bought these for $10 on Amazon a year ago. They work well outside, but you need a wind screen. I have 3 other alcohol stoves that I use often when I'm hiking. I did however put them in my 72-hour bag because I like the form factor combined with the Esbit stove. Overall, worth the money. Thanks for sharing.
Earnie, I enjoy your channel and its straightforward and informative videos. Thank you. The alcohol burners featured here were once called Monkey Boy Stoves and were relatively popular because of their simplicity, efficiency, and weight. You often see them in different sizes and made with various components. My current burner is 3.5 inches by one inch and uses a fiberglass oven-door gasket spiraling throughout the center. It has carbon fiber over the top and a mesh screen holding everything in place. The gasket's inclusion makes it a little heavier, but it boils water like a champ, and you can always count on it to do its job. Again, thank you for your videos. We look forward to viewing them when we can.
I Don't know about this but I haven't seen ANY alcohol stove more better and more simpler than the DIY Fancy Feast Cat Can food stove that only requires 16 punched holes with absolutely NO Moving parts that you just light up after filling it with HEET fuel. The Trangia Burner is the only one better!
My favorite is still the BCB. The dragon fire fuel weighs a bit more than traditional alcohol but burns nice and clean. Also able to use solid fuel alcohol cubes they have and esbit or other similar hexamine.
Hi Ernie. Thanks for another green test. Keep them coming! 2 questions for you: 1. Have you ever tested the x-boil? German cottage company. It's currently my favourite. I'd like to hear your views. 2. Which of the various Goshawk set-ups that you've tested was your favourite . Being from Australia I'd like to get one of theirs but can't decide. Thanks mate. Todd
Interesting test, I didn't think the different sizes were so close, thanks for showing. Cheap temu-stuff, you get the stove for 4 bucks wih a pack of solid fuel, the aluminium cans are sold for 2 bucks for a 10-pack, similar the water bags, shipping included, so the complete set should be around 7 bucks or less for the distributor. 100% profit sounds not bad for me. Despite their cheapness, these carbon-felt alcohol stoves-in-a-can work really well. To fill the water bags use a funnel - but first test, if they are leak-free. The Esbit-type stove is pretty heavy - if you want to go UL, replace it with a homemade potstand from wire. Using a windscreen with some one inch gap to the pot increases boil time by heating the sidewalls too. Extra-tip: the alcohol-burners burn almost invisible - dissolve some salt in water and add some saltwater to the fuel. Using fuel with 70-80% ethanol avoids sputtering and helps to provide an even burn when hot. The salt gives a warm yellow flame.
I repurposed an old esbit stove and made a burner with a screw-top tin about the size of the middle one you show. It adds so much flexibility to my kit. I have a gas fired Trangia 25 set, but this little stove adds a second burner which is useful for boiling water or cooking veggies etc while cooking on the main stove. Also great on its own for a day trip just for making a cuppa or heating some food. I pack it in my Trangia bag.
I made a few of this type of burner & they work great except for one thing, mine are hard to light & it looks like the problem is the stainless steel mesh. I used a grease splatter screen for a fry pan purchased from a Dollar store, the mesh has a very tight weave. A great addition to my alcohol stove’s is some silicone measuring cups, 100 ml soft shot glass that can be squished into a pack & even has a nice poring notch.
The price is unbelievable. The Esbit type pot stand though isn't allowing the burners to reach their full potential. The gap between the burner and the base of the pot isn't high enough. I think the boil times would be significantly reduced if a different pot stand was used. Certainly worth buying though, even just for the burners 👍🏻
Good video Ernie, 15$ is hard to argue with. But I think you would still need a wind shield. The XBoil looks like the perfect solution, at 50€. Think I’ll try to make my own.👍
So, the solid fuel stove was used to contain, hold over the flame of the alcohol…Have you used the Esbit stove to contain a twig fire? It works. So, for $15.00, you get five light stoves. Take the small can with the Esbit stove. Take a couple of solid tablets, some alcohol and pick up some twigs…You have small cook fires. Thanks for sharing this…from east Tennessee.
Have you tried burning white gas (Coleman fuel) in a spirit burner? White gas has more energy density, which is why it is often used for melting snow in Winter. But the stoves are heavy. If we could get the benefit of more energy density with a lightweight stove, then that would be excellent. - Does it work better with some kinds of burners? Wicking or cat can burners, vortex burners, or maybe one of those fancy two-chamber things you showcased recently? - Is there a way to get a nice, clean, blue flame without the soot?
A long time ago you had a video with the Trangia Gel Burner cup ( B24 ) from Tarangia. I picked up a couple and using carbon felt made stoves just like these , even with lids. I left out the screening since it wasn't really necessary. They are great little stoves.
Sorry, the best alcohol stove for price, weight, efficiency, and flowering speed is the Ti Artisan 70ml Titanium. It is a Toaks Siphon type and costs $17 and only 10 days to wait. Take a test. You won't regret it.Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
Based on your theory of why the small worked better, it would have been good to do a second test of the medium and large where you filled them all the way to compare to the burn with one ounce.
Thanks Doc for your great review. I purchased this kit about a month ago. I believe the large tin is made from steel, not aluminum (magnet sticks to it). My kit came with 3 large carbon fiber(CF) disks, 2 medium and 2 small. There were no instructions, so I had no idea if one or all of the CF disks were to be used in the stove, or were they spares. What did you do?
I just have a pre warmer for my Solo Alcohol burner. It stores on the bottom you push it down, it locks in place, you put a little fuel on the pad in the middle, light it. The prewarmer was an eBay purchase. Yes not a trangia stove, but they have had decades to fix the leaky seam problem. If you want that brand, Firebox Stove will sell you one with the seam soldered. I do like this kind of fabric stove, for $15. It will be interesting if it comes back in stock. Can't go wrong with that price, 3 stoves. On my kitchen gas stove, we have a very tiny diameter burner on the back left. Our percolator coffee pot goes to a perk by about 2.5 minutes faster on it. The heat, flames, is very central to the center of the percolator's bottom. The front burners are much larger, and the flame is near the outer diameter. You have to watch for flame licking up the sides with it. I'm wondering if that small diameter burner is doing the same thing? It's very interesting that the smaller one is more efficient. Makes you want a small ones.
Right!?! Price is tough to beat!! I built one of these stoves last year and then had a epiphany... I have a BCB folding stove with a tray that takes solid fuel and their brand of gel cubes. It also has a windscreen panel that snaps into place. The tray has side walls and I thought hmmmmm... why not take my left over carbon felt and stainless mesh and make the tray into one of these stoves?? So I did. Haven't done a burn test with it yet, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
Thanks Ernie for this tempting stove kit …looks like price to function winner. Now I am waiting for your review on a money tree to buy all of these extra stoves that I just have to have…😂! Have a great day!
C’mon, Ernie! I saw tons of alcohol dribbling off the back of that shot glass during your first pour! That would never fly in Chemisty lab! 🤣 Love the channel, man! Keep up the good work!!
They will probably come back in stock, but I'm glad that I have the Kojin stove already. (I did also get that 2 pack of rectangular alcohol stoves you reviewed recently.)
yeah i've got a set up something like that that cost me about 5 bucks! a 4 pack of small and a 2 pack of large slip top tins from dollar tree were a buck and a quarter a pack and a coughlan's pocket stove i bought years back for 4 bucks! i run the stove with just empty tins and fill them with hand sanitizer gel for fuel!!
Hey I recently asked myself "do I need a titanium pot for my car camping?" I have an old small kitchen pot with sandwich bottom. Is there a different in fuel usage or boil time when using different type of pots? And is the difference big enough to make a difference?
Completely depends on how, where and what you cook. Thin pots are only good for watery stuff, otherwise you get burnt food. Either watery or oily stuff, but the second option is unhealthy. Try thin pots you have at home and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. You either only make stews, soups or use very low heat settings to allow for a more even heat distribution. Also titanium is a total gimmick. Unnecessary by all means and a lot inferior to aluminum. I’d gladly give all my titanium stuff for a good set of hard anodized aluminum cookset. Titanium is supposedly good because you can get lightweight stuff that doesn’t bend and won’t melt if put on coals as aluminum would, but as long as there’s some water in the aluminum pot it won’t ever melt.
canister is 1 dollar the military stove is 5 ,, you can get those little metal containers at any craft store ,, and the stove is a dime a dozen at any military outlet used there under 5 dollars
I have made a pop can burner that fits inside my Esbit. 6oz can. The reason? During COVID-19 Esbit got hard to find. It also works well with a G.I. cup stove. Burner is made from a 6 oz can. No chamber, just press fit and vent holes around the top. Cat type works too, but they use a LOT of fuel.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately it's not available at the moment on Amazon. Can you provide another site we could buy this kit ? I live in Greece - Europe.
It acts as both a wick for better vaporization of the alcohol fuel, and a sponge to soak up the fuel to make spills much less likely. Carbon felt works better as a wick than either regular cotton or mineral wool.
Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock. On Amazon. Guess I missed the boat, but I have my DIY stove that I'm pretty happy with :)
Daisy is better. I built an alcohol stove with an old Daisy pellet can I had laying around in 2017ish. I used some welders' carbon felt instead of fiberglass to absorb the liquid, no spills, some screening from a tea leaf strainer to hold the felt in place. It holds 2 oz. or 60 ml of alcohol and with 1 oz of fuel will burn over 15 minutes. I use a Zen Camps wind screen/burner that works with alcohol or solid fuel and, though not designed that way, have used a small twig fire inside. I like things that can work with multiple options. At 76 years old, I like things that work well rather than being the lightest thing in the world. Function over form as it were. For cheaper, I used a cut tin can for wind screen and pot holder till I found the Zen Camps, which i like better.😅
Man these things are still out of stock on Amazon! If I could just get my hands on some of those round containers with the screw on top I’d make my own. Anyone have a source?
Carbon felt? “Wool is classified as a flame-resistant fabric. The textile is flammable, but it has to reach at least 1,058 degrees Fahrenheit, to ignite. The material has high water and nitrogen contents in its cells which means if it did ever catch on fire, once removed from the source of the heat, it would self-extinguish the flame.”
This just shows how cheap these things are to make when you can sell them at this price and still make a worthwhile profit. It also proves what a huge/ridiculous mark-up most companies put on these items.
No, the felt absorbs and holds the fuel (unless you fill the burner above the level of the felt of course). This type of burner therefore has the advantage of effectively being spill-proof if knocked over.
Alcohol stoves can be problematic in fire prone Northern California where I live. You start a forest fire with one and you may end up paying for the fire fighting effort.
You should definitely do one day a side by side comparison between the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe and the Fire Maple Polaris Pressure Regulator upright canister stove. It's such an underrated stove it deserves a proper review. Hope you like the idea ! 😉
Wow I am unimpressed with your burn time for the large since you spilled so much fuel. Or did you not realize that you poured a bunch on your counter. I guess that invalidates your burn time test at least for the large burner.
I made one of these out of a Crosman pellet tin with a screw on lid, got a sheet of carbon felt at Lowe's hanging next to the solder on a rack, and a stainless steel screen strainer from Walmart for a dollar. Then made a mini one from a Nivia skin cream tin.
Yeah and me works bloody good

'Speedsterstoves (SBP)' in the UK sell these things for £5 plus postage...

Love hearing that “We’re going to boil some water.” And I am going to enjoy watching you boil water.
2 cups of water and 1 ounce of fuel… always the scientist with control specs lol

Spillage hazard. Alcohol fires are awfully dangerous
A lot of backpackers switched from the SuperCat to Kojin stoves over the last few years.
My favorite is still the BCB. The dragon fire fuel weighs a bit more than traditional alcohol but burns nice and clean. Also able to use solid fuel alcohol cubes they have and esbit or other similar hexamine.
I use the speedster alcohol stove and enclosed pot stand to keep the wind out.
My perfect stove.😊
Sandwich pot bottoms definitely take longer. For alcohol stoves I only use thin single layer pans and pot.
I've loved this stove type since I discovered it a few years ago! Small, light and doesn't leak. Therefore also perfect for children...

Yep, me too 👍🏻

Man, I love your videos. They often pick me up. Went out to buy one on Amazon... NLA. Found a similar one, and bought 2.
Thank you Erney for all your explorations! I love to watch your videos! I don't use any wire mash in my homemade stove like these. They are ok enough.

Hey I recently asked myself "do I need a titanium pot for my car camping?"
I have an old small kitchen pot with sandwich bottom.
For car camping? Cast iron! You've got a car to carry it in.
Do you know what purpose the wire mesh serves?

Dang thing ain't even IN stock right now and no word on if it'll even come back in stock anytime soon...and I JUST found this vid too.
Would it be possible to test a couple sticks and a cut coke can?
Me: thinks about buying.
Also me: looks over at the empty tins and carbon felt sheets I already have. Oh.
id you try blowing orusing a fan on the stove to rimulate wind??
Pardon my ignorance but what function does the carbon felt play?
It acts as both a wick for better vaporization of the alcohol fuel, and a sponge to soak up the fuel to make spills much less likely. Carbon felt works better as a wick than either regular cotton or mineral wool.

The material has high water and nitrogen contents in its cells which means if it did ever catch on fire, once removed from the source of the heat, it would self-extinguish the flame.”
It's a pity it seems the burner does not fit inside the Esbit stove, it would be really handy if it did.
This just shows how cheap these things are to make when you can sell them at this price and still make a worthwhile profit.
It also proves what a huge/ridiculous mark-up most companies put on these items.
Channels say BEST just to get you to click, then all you see is junk
Ahhh you pour your alcohol about as well as I pour my coffee.
This looks exactly like my X-boil
Yes it does😁
@@LeopoldElwes I guess my X-Boil doesn't have a mesh, but I have the feeling that it makes no difference.
@@mastabas it just keeps it from falling out 😅
I just want the small burner for my Esbit, I don’t need the other stuff.
My best budget alc stove is a budweiser can.
I don't know your pronouns, but Bud? Well, I try not to judge.

I do too😂

Haha yup 4 hrs after the video is released it's definitely sold out
Looks like my speedster stoves only not as well made. And more expensive 😅
Thanks for the Info, but I'll be making my own gelled alcohol with Calcium Acetate!!! Much Safer!!!...and no carbon wick or screen needed!!!
Not available and will come back with a higher price lol. Guaranteed.
My luck… Amazon is out
👍🏻👍🏻
I just wish someone could do a scientific video testing the btu’s. Doesn’t it only take water, a thermometer and measurements?
😀
Serious question: Do they leak if you leave fuel in them?
Btw…video was up less than a half hour, already sold out!
Would think so they have a seal in the lid
No, the felt absorbs and holds the fuel (unless you fill the burner above the level of the felt of course). This type of burner therefore has the advantage of effectively being spill-proof if knocked over.
Currently unavailable.
36 minutes after you posted the video and they are sold out. The next batch likely will be double the price.
Alcohol stoves can be problematic in fire prone Northern California where I live. You start a forest fire with one and you may end up paying for the fire fighting effort.
Everything in California is problematic. Period.
As of right now it's sold out
You should definitely do one day a side by side comparison between the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe and the Fire Maple Polaris Pressure Regulator upright canister stove. It's such an underrated stove it deserves a proper review. Hope you like the idea ! 😉
all gone
Nothing about this makes me want to replace the Trangia I’ve had for 20yrs…
GRRRRR - as per usual, not available on Amazon Canada :-(
Wow I am unimpressed with your burn time for the large since you spilled so much fuel. Or did you not realize that you poured a bunch on your counter. I guess that invalidates your burn time test at least for the large burner.
Use a syringe to fill the plastic pouches as it can be put into the rectangular aluminum can/box.
The real question.
Llamas or Alpacas?
Already unavailable 😂😂😂The marketing power of the paleo hiker strikes again
