- A drive down memory lane for those previously stationed at Holy Loch Scotland during the cold war. The all familiar Taxi ride Starts at the Argyle Hotel, down Argyle Street/Sandbank Rd, Right on Ferry Road and on to the pier.
Wow!! The drive from Dunoon through the highland road to HolyLoch Tok me back 40 years!! Walked that road many times - back and forth from 1978-80. Was on The holland AS32. Saw in the comments a MP from that time. Made me ponder if HE was the one that brought me back to the Holland, when I got so drunk in 79 I threatened to blow up the ship??!! Hey, I was a drunk 19 year old LOL.
My dad was stationed there..'82-'84...Paul Schultz on the Hunley ..I was 9-10 yrs old ...great time
Thanks for the memories lived there until 1960 miss it so much.I,m in Canada now,and still am trying to find Doreen Hannah my best friend..my name is Glynis.
Thanks for taking me back - - - Those were the days! Dunoon Dollies, EM Club, the pub life - a pint & a game of darts, fish 'n chips, awesome people, beautiful landscape, NO REGRETS! USS Hunley AS-31 - Reagan & Thatcher years!
Thanks for the ride down memory lane. I was there 1983 - 1986 USS Henry Clay SSBN 625B
A-Frog Gold '79-'81, AS-33 W-2 '90? to Site closure...when I reported onboard one of my lads had found himself in possession of a Schrader valve tool, and deflated a number of car tires on his inebriated perambulation along the High Road. Good kid, really, and certainly no worse than I was at his age in Rota.
Love Scotland and the people there, although I was occasionally accused of not understanding English. Walked every one of those hills.
man you did a great job taking me down memory lane, once you got out at the old Shore Patrol / Ministry of Defense shack at the end of the pier, i was hoping you might head across the street to the enlisted man's club and snack bar,, when i was on Shore Patrol, i spent many a night at that club breaking up fights... (USS Holland 1979-1981)
Taxi drivers took the piss.
I was stationed right here on the USS Canopus AS-34 in 1972.
Great video! I remember this ride well. Was on Canopus in 70-71. Loved the people and the country.
AHOY! I was in the HT damage control shop USS Hunley AS-31 from 82 to 83.Had a blast with the locals and crew
I remember those long drunk walks as well. I remember having to cross the bridge to the Ferry when the tide was out was super scary. Never seen such a drastic tide change like that before.
I was there between 86-88 on the USS John Adams.
lived there when my dad was on the USS Canopus in the late 60's/early 70's :)
Planning a trip back soon, was there on the Uss Canopus from May 74 till we left for the state's the end of 75, I was Chaplain Dolaghan's yoeman
Was there from 1986-1988 worked on yfnb31 boat ops and floating crane. Such good memories.
Nice memory. Only made it there once. USS Kamehameha SSBN642 Gold, 1990
Polk 645 blue and combined '89-'91 specific memory of that cab ride when we drank all of our money up and had no money for the cabby. He said "F*** it! Be off with ya!". I can still hear it in my brain said with an agitated Scottish accent today. It does not bring about a sense of pride when I think of how I represented the US and myself when I was there in my youth.
Wow, the price of a taxi ride from Dunoon to the pier has really gone up in the last 30 years.
1973-1975 USS Canopus AS-34 A-Div Small Boats (the rat pack)
I remember that pier and those hills. USS Sam Houston SSBN 609B
If anyone based there back in the day ever needs some video any part of the of the area let me know, I'll gladly shoot some for you. A lots changed but much more' is still the same.
i was based there in 79-81,,, what ever happened to the enlisted man's club, bowling alley and the surrounding buildings? if they are still there, can you get some video of the outside?
I was stationed there 1983-86. Lived at Eagle court.
1973-1975 USS Canopus AS-34
hey Franko whats been happening?....sure miss the days we had there!...oh by the way its Mr. Magoo to you sir!...lol
That can't be Scotland, the sun is shining! I know, I was stationed there!
Always wonder whether or not the Harmony Hut was still there. Country/Western bar in Dunoon/Site 1 area.
Love the video was there as a kid from 85 to 87. You have any video of eagle court housing or can you pan and see where the base used to be.
Eagle court is now called Sandhaven and can be viewed on google maps.
87-92 Simon Lake. Miss that place. Need to plan a visit soon myself. Was the Ardenadam complex still there?
1987-1990 USS Simon Lake AS-33
memories good and bad
holy crap ! I used to live in Holy Loch in a tiny cottage before moving to navy housing. It was named Mingary (spell check)Cottage next door to a hotel across the street from a fishing pier not sure if that's the same pier . I went to Strone Primary School up the hill. We moved back to the US in 1992. is the cottage and or hotel still there?
Yes, both cottage and hotel (now just a pub and fine dining restaurant) are still there. Here is a link to it on Google Maps - you can see your old home www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.9838722,-4.9039317,3a,75y,74.91h,89.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1seUwOCQ5wAxAuv_kozu3LbQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Good lord, those points of beer would make ya smile.
Got there July 80 left Jan 83.
I was 17 when I got there.

I should have traveled more but being young n stupid....I just wanted to drink , dance and chase women. Caught one, got married, had a kid.
But that ended. My fault.
Nov. 81....missile dropped on the sub. Anyone remember that day.
I do. Best wishes to all.
Sent lots of time there with Pnsy
Sorry. Hard to watch and listen to.
