Wow!! The drive from Dunoon through the highland road to HolyLoch Tok me back 40 years!! Walked that road many times - back and forth from 1978-80. Was on The holland AS32. Saw in the comments a MP from that time. Made me ponder if HE was the one that brought me back to the Holland, when I got so drunk in 79 I threatened to blow up the ship??!! Hey, I was a drunk 19 year old LOL.
Thanks for taking me back - - - Those were the days! Dunoon Dollies, EM Club, the pub life - a pint & a game of darts, fish 'n chips, awesome people, beautiful landscape, NO REGRETS! USS Hunley AS-31 - Reagan & Thatcher years!
Thanks for the memories lived there until 1960 miss it so much.I,m in Canada now,and still am trying to find Doreen Hannah my best friend..my name is Glynis.
A-Frog Gold '79-'81, AS-33 W-2 '90? to Site closure...when I reported onboard one of my lads had found himself in possession of a Schrader valve tool, and deflated a number of car tires on his inebriated perambulation along the High Road. Good kid, really, and certainly no worse than I was at his age in Rota. Love Scotland and the people there, although I was occasionally accused of not understanding English. Walked every one of those hills.
man you did a great job taking me down memory lane, once you got out at the old Shore Patrol / Ministry of Defense shack at the end of the pier, i was hoping you might head across the street to the enlisted man's club and snack bar,, when i was on Shore Patrol, i spent many a night at that club breaking up fights... (USS Holland 1979-1981)
I remember those long drunk walks as well. I remember having to cross the bridge to the Ferry when the tide was out was super scary. Never seen such a drastic tide change like that before.
Polk 645 blue and combined '89-'91 specific memory of that cab ride when we drank all of our money up and had no money for the cabby. He said "F*** it! Be off with ya!". I can still hear it in my brain said with an agitated Scottish accent today. It does not bring about a sense of pride when I think of how I represented the US and myself when I was there in my youth.
If anyone based there back in the day ever needs some video any part of the of the area let me know, I'll gladly shoot some for you. A lots changed but much more' is still the same.
i was based there in 79-81,,, what ever happened to the enlisted man's club, bowling alley and the surrounding buildings? if they are still there, can you get some video of the outside?
holy crap ! I used to live in Holy Loch in a tiny cottage before moving to navy housing. It was named Mingary (spell check)Cottage next door to a hotel across the street from a fishing pier not sure if that's the same pier . I went to Strone Primary School up the hill. We moved back to the US in 1992. is the cottage and or hotel still there?
